We were happy and surprised that they were able to accommodate our large group at the 3rd period of an NHL playoff game. Excellent service. The drinks are competitively priced. The TV screens are not so big, but the sound is loud. After the game, the karaoke host begins. Quite an eclectic bunch of performers. Many are regulars. The bathrooms look clean, but they stink of sewer gas. A common problem on Whyte ave. We didn't try the food this time, but I remember it being good last time I ate here. Great place to cure a Saturday hangover. Window seat, sunny patio or if you prefer to hide in a dark corner they will have the perfect spot for you. Booth and table seating are available. We enjoyed brunch and a few drinks before starting a whyte ave adventure. Caesars were on special for $5.50 and mimosas for $3. I ordered the Benny's. It was delicious, eggs were cooked perfectly. With the goal of dining el fresco on the first warm day of the year, we were pleased to find patio space tucked in behind the Tavern. Though the outdoor area doesn't get evening sun it was still amazing to finally eat outside. The pub is a bit dive-y but in an unpretentious, laid back kind of way. Come with the same attitude and you won't be disappointed. The food was tasty and clearly some effort put into the pub grub. The options include standard fare like chicken wings, nachos, pizza and sandwiches. Along with a few more unique choices like perogies and sausage. The beer came cold and there was a decent selection of brews. The prices were good especially for Whyte Ave and though the service was a little scattered at times, it was friendly. read more

Some friends had become enamored with the Tavern's XXXL Caesar and had planned a get together specifically for the drinks. Of course who goes to a new pub without checking out the ratings, right? Fellow Yelpers had some good things and bad things to say about the establishment. I will share my experience. The pub has recently experienced a "re-launch" so I am assuming that this means it has come under new management. At this point, I haven't been able to confirm this. It is now one of three pubs owned by the same people. The Tavern is small, but cozy. I like the way that it is laid out. There are TV's for the hockey games etc, but the bartender goes around and takes a vote as to whether the patrons would prefer music, or the volumes turned up on the televisions. The XXXL Caesar is a thing of beauty. It is served in a large mason jar with three ounces of alcohol and almost anything you can imagine to garnish it; olive, pickled onion, garlic, artichoke, bean, celery, dill pickle, pickled egg, lime, lemon, and a grilled cheese sandwich!! There is practically an entire meal skewered onto your drink, so we ordered light when it came to the food. My only complaint was no bacon!! The Tavern tells me they are taking it into consideration though, as I am not the first to suggest it. The menu can seem a little pricey when you first take a look at it. $8 for a half order of nachos and you pay extra for beef, chicken or pulled pork. There were two of us and we couldn't finish the drink and a half order split between the two of us! They did not skimp on the ingredients and the cheese was nicely layered. Our drinking companions had the steak sandwich special ($10) which was a decent sized strip-loin and they both had poutine as their side. Again - decent sized plates for the price. Our server, Candi was lovely and checked in with us often. She left us feeling well taken care of! There seemed to be a lot of hellos and hugs going around. The staff seems to get to know their regulars here. Will I be back - you bet! As with other businesses on Whyte, parking can be an issue. There is metered parking right out front of the Tavern that is free after 6pm, but finding an empty spot can be a chore. read more

Who has Friday night karaoke!?! We popped in looking for a quick in'n'out beer and ended up shutting the place down! We didn't eat anything but did enjoy the $16 buckets of Pabst and screaming punk pop and old school hip hop into a microphone for hours. There was so much regret the next day. Pleasant atmosphere, decent music playing in the background, and several large screen televisions with sports. The menu has good variety of both food and drink, although I found some of the food items to be a bit on the pricey side. I had a steak sandwich with home cut fries, and it was decent - the extra $1.50 for the sauteed mushrooms and onions was unnecessary, as the addition was more like a garnish. I also found the service to be not that great, especially since it was not busy when I arrived. It took a while for someone to give me a menu (my drink was brought quickly), and another long while before my order was taken. Then, mid-meal, my server changed to someone more friendly and attentive. Would I come here again? Possibly. Would it be my first choice for a Saturday evening on Whyte? Probably not. read more

Today I had the most delicious Benny's. I ordered The Beast Benny's and doubled them up now when I have Benny's the yoke needs to be soft and the first ones were not, in fact they were poached hard and I only realized this after I ate one, so I sent them back to be redone, most places would just cook you new ones to replace the ones you didn't eat and serve them to you that way. Not Tavern on Whyte, no they made me a whole new plate so I ended up with 4 new soft yoke Benny's that were perfect. This meant that I now had 5 Benny's with their delicious smash browns. So what did I do, well I ate all the Benny's 3/4 of the smash browns and 3 cups of coffee. My god brunch was perfect absolutely perfect. Tavern on Whyte is a good spot, if you know exactly where it fits into your rotation. It's not fancy - in fact, it's a little rough around the edges in terms of the space itself, and occasionally the service. I forgive this because it's laid-back and although the servers can be a bit inattentive, they're generally friendly. The food I've had here is limited, but what I've tasted is good. The pizza was quality, and tasted great - I'd recommend it. I usually come by here for their ridiculously inexpensive brunch for $4.99 - it includes eggs, toast, bacon and hash browns, and it always tastes good. Unfortunately, it's also always served cold - not sure what that's about. For me, it's a 3 star menu item that would automatically raise to 5 if it was served piping hot. With a little bit of tweaking (serve foods hotter, clean up the space) Tavern on Whyte could easily rise to 4 stars in my books. A good Whyte Ave haunt. read more

In response to the review which states Tavern on Whyte's wings are over-priced, I have this: The wings are brought in from Brazil, where the poultry industry is held up to better quality standards than the North American poultry industry and the birds are raised humanely in farms. Googled best Cesar in Edmonton and the Tavern on Whyte was on the top of the list. Dropped in to check it out, the place is small but loud. Friday night Karaoke!! My friend raves about the brunch all the time, so 4 of us decided to go check it out. The atmosphere is pretty cool... very "cozy" like they say. And I would definitely come back to try out their drinks and just have a good time. I wasn't blown away by the breakfast though. The price is fantastic.... $4.99 for bacon and eggs (or as they call it... "The Cure"). My friends all really liked it though, so maybe it's just me. I do love texas toast typically, but I found there's too be almost too thick and the crust was extremely hard. Breakfast comes with "Smashbrowns"... Which were boiled potatoes that get "smashed" in a frying pan. I was really excited when I read that because that's the best thing to go with eggs... but I was very underwhelmed and thought they could have added some kind of seasoning, or left them in a little longer so they could get a little crispy or something. Everyone's eggs were cooked perfectly, so that's a huge plus :) The service was good, and like I said... the atmosphere is great. The Tavern is a small pub that allows the wait staff to provide excellent service. As the building for the Tavern is very small, the wait staff is able to very effectively serve everyone as soon as they require a drink. They also have very good meal specials on at the Tavern, including $5 for 5 tacos and $5 for a large bowl of chilli. Good and cheap food combined with a full bar provides anything you may require. The pub also has a few TVs available for watching sporting events and darts in the corner if you get bored. Some evenings they also have a DJ who comes in and plays some music to keep everyone entertained. Great service and meal specials create an awesome new place to grab a drink. read more

On a return trip, we got to try their food. It was 2 for 1 burger night (Wednesday) and the bugers were actually substantial and delicious. Fries were good too. I was happy to spot a few beers not seen at every other bar, and the relaxed atmosphere made this visit as good as our first. read more

I've been here a few times on a weekend for casual drinks. For the first time me and my boyfriend wanted to go and try it for dinner. We went on a Thursday night and the place was quiet. We made out way back to the patio which was enclosed without a view or anything but we were out of the sun and had a wonderful breeze which was perfect for the hot day. The place is dark and cozy like others have said so I don't know how I would have liked it if the patio was packed as the tables are very close together. The benches were a little dirty also and I just happened to be wearing a white skirt so we found some chairs to sit in. Our server was wonderful. She said she was new but had great knowledge of the beer list and food and was so kind. We never had empty drinks and were checked on regularly. I had ordered a small ceasar salad and lemon pepper wings. my boyfriend the sausage and perogies. If anyone has seen my other reviews I am very picky about my wings and lemon pepper are hard to find. I was very pleasantly surprised that the wings were seasoned to perfection. They had lots of meat on them, the only thing if im being picky is they were a little dry, but overall very good. The sausage and perogies were fabulous. No complaints on the food or service here! Now we know this is a good place to go for dinner before a night on whyte. read more

Can you say "overrated", boys and girls? Surely, you can. Tavern on Whyte is overpriced. Although the surroundings it offers are pleasant, the food offered there is only marginally better than standard pub grub and it's expensive for what you get. Case in point: their wing special is $5 per pound. Nine wingettes/drumettes were served up to me as a pound on the night that I visited (10-12 average size wingettes/drumettes is my normal yield when cooking a pound, but I digress). Whether it was nine or it should have been ten, eleven or twelve wingettes/drumettes, the value proposition is poor. In my case, each wingette/drumette cost over 55¢. And that's their special! This represents very poor value when bars in the area offer 35-40¢ wingettes/drumettes for their wing specials and those wingettes/drumettes are the same size or bigger. Tavern on Whyte is also one of those Whyte Ave places that advertises a pint special, but serves that special in a glass that can hold no more than 14 fluid ounces at best. For those of you who don't know how big a pint is, it's 20 fluid ounces in this country. Advertising a beer special in this way is misleading at best. The bartender was pleasant, but also somewhat distracted and inattentive. When I walk by this place, I've never seen it packed. In fact, it's normally been quite empty. There may be reasons for that. I bet the Whyte Ave rent is killing these guys. In a more affordable location, with lower rent and more seating, they might be able to offer better specials. Their fantastic location might be more of a curse than a blessing in the end, as it is no doubt eating up so much of their margin. I hate giving as low a rating as I have for this place, mainly because it has so much potential. As it stands right now, however, it's much too expensive for a neighbourhood pub, especially one on a street where value-seeking university-types prefer inexpensive pints and grub. read more

Very cold beer -here, fresh food and attentive servers on this day! Came by on a Saturday afternoon, they were just wrapping up their brunch special, and had a steak sandwich special on. The restaurant was fairly empty but the menu looked promising. My friend ordered the tavern burger with bacon and cheddar which was another buck each. I ordered the special steak sandwich with fries and we both ordered side gravy which was another 2 bucks but it was well worth it! There are some booth here and lots of tables,great staff and prompt service. My steak was a great cut which I ordered medium- although it came a bit over medium it was great and was a larger portion that what most of the bars on Whyte usually offer. I was happy with the portion. Gravy was tasty and the final bill with a couple of beers and tip was 47 bucks/ for 2 people-it was a great deal. My friend said it was one of the better burgers he had, and he would know its his usual food (to order) so go try it. They have some interesting daily specials which I will try another day like the 5 bucks for a pound of chicken wings- that's maybe on my next visit - but its a limited happy hour special! A nice sit down, have a drink, and eat some great fresh food kind of place. You can also order and take out if your busy, and want to eat some where else! read more

My husband and I went there for some appies early one evening. We ordered chicken wings (allegedly with their own homemade bbq sauce), spanakopita, sliders and their type of pizza bread with marinara sauce. First the spanakopita was deep fried in oil that was not hot enough so the filo dough was soggy and not crisp, next while the pizza bread was good, the marinara sauce was ice cold. We both thought it should have been at least been warm and both of us prefer it that way. The sliders were very good and the only things that escaped criticism. Lastly the chicken wings-i am sorry to say but they were terrible. The bbq sauce was non existent and there was some flavor or spice on them that was very off putting. I only managed to eat a couple and believe me that was enough. Within the hour we both had very bad stomach pains and felt not so good for the rest of the night and into the next day. I am pretty sure we both got food poisoning from the wings. They did not seem to have been freshly cooked, but rather precooked then heated up as they were a bit rubbery. This place has become my new favorite bar. Mainly because it's way more quiet than anywhere else, depending on the night. I can actually enjoy a conversation with someone here and that's important to me. It's a little pricey and they don't have the greatest draft selection but the food is really tasty, the staff/owners are really nice, there's always good music playing and the little front patio AND back patio with fireplace is really awesome if the weather permits. Sometimes they have some great bands too but that's when it gets so insanely loud. The place is a little too small for such things in my opinion. This is the first time I've visited since it was Devlin's Cocktail Lounge -- which is too bad, because I still had a Yelp perk for a free cocktail at Devlin's =( Anyway, a group of friends and I dropped into Tavern on a Thursday evening after dinner. Set up is identical to Devlin's, but everything looks new. The hockey game was one, and with so many TVs in a small space you definitely have a good view. They had a $5 wings special on but since we had just eaten, we didn't partake. Service was ok and the whole bar was a bit loud for how empty it was. I felt a little out of place here, but I can't exactly put my finger on why; just not my scene. I like my restaurants small and my bars big, so this Tavern doesn't quite fit for me. Only after I ordered a pint of Traditional did I realize they had their own brew. I might come back just to try it, though my friend complained it tasted a little watered down. It was an ok stop but I'm not sure if I'll be by again. read more
