NJ tourist looking for a local gem after the Walkway Over The Hudson, we came here on a Friday evening at 4:30. The bar was packed with a few tables still available, we choose a table in the corner. Service was decent for a busy joint. The selection of craft beers on tap are excellent, I had Dead Guyyy, Bitbrger and Kold One. As for food, I ordered a bar pie with peppers and onions, my wife ordered scallops with risotto. The scallops and risotto was great. Unfortunately, the bar pie could use some help. I know, pizza is so objective. But in my opinion, this pie almost tasted like a frozen pizza. Again, blasphemy if you're a local, but JMO. We drove to Poughkeepsie to see the Walkway Over the Hudson (scenic walking bridge) then as it was dinner time I tuned into my Yelp account to see what was near by for dinner and decided on Tavern 23. We arrived at about 5pm to this highly rated restaurant just below the walkway. We were lucky to find a parking space where someone was leaving and entered a busy small bar with hightop tables and happy hour band playing. They played music we enjoyed, James Taylor, Neil Young etc.. Just what we like! From very pleasant staff I ordered sangria that was yummy, Mexican Street Corn as you can see from my photo was absolutely so good and a sandwich with roasted turkey, bacon & cheese with cranberry mayo on bread. Pricey but nice to find delicious food service at 11:30pm. We had 2 huge half pound bacon cheeseburgers ordered Medium with fries for about $40 total. They told me allow 30 minutes. I arrived in 15 minutes planning to have a drink but food was ready. I went home to eat and both burgers were more on the rare side. I ate the outer more cooked part and the fries. I have now made over 20 attempts to contact the owner regarding an erroneous charge on my debit card for a single cheeseburger pickup order. They have billed me more than double the original amount and have been avoiding my calls to both the restaurant and catering numbers. When I finally reached the owner, he instructed me to file a dispute, despite knowing that it's impossible if not provided a customer copy. The situation has escalated to the point where a waitress offered to provide me with a complimentary meal (paid out of her pocket, which isn't fair to her) to retain me as a customer. Additionally, for years, a group of over 25 friends and I have frequented this establishment annually to celebrate my birthday since its inception. DISGUSTING I witnessed a kitchen worker Last night 2/20 around 10:30 pm go behind their dumpster with their apron on and begin to urinate. I hollered over Hey! Hey Hey! You gotta pee inside! How does a place like this stay under the radar for a half-year? Maybe the regulars don't want the word to get out? My take is a place like this deserves your business. It's a casual, friendly, accommodating place for people of all ages to meet, with a fun selection of brews from all over lower New York State. The food is good-quality, great-portioned pub-style. Newbies are welcomed immediately, and it seemed like all I'd need to do is visit once or twice more to feel like a regular. It might be a little tough to find. It's on a side street in Poughkeepsie, a nondescript building at the back of a large parking lot. The feeling changes once you step inside and into the realm. The beer list does change from time to time. This evening I started with a Hawaiian brew, Pipeline Porter from the Kona Brewing Company, I ended with a Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout, and in-between I had a burger and fries. The portions are huge, not only for their burgers but their salads, probably just about everything. My burger was cooked to order, with lettuce, tomato, choice of onion and cheese, and optional condiments. The portion of hand-cut fries was HUGE, crisp and well seasoned. It's inviting to folks of all ages. There were families there, couples eating and drinking at the bar. I'm told there was a 50th birthday there last night while students from Marist were partying at the table next to it. There's quite a few tables that can accommodate 6-10 customers each. The music was somewhat generically accommodating, stuff like Steve Miller and The Eagles, played at a not-outrageously-loud volume. As of this post, the website wasn't linking to anything.
