Food had been ordered for the table but honestly the portion sizes were extremely skimpy and what I was being asked to share was basically an appetizer for one. Service was fine. Regarding the menu, there were many wonderful options to choose from, which made it difficult to decide, but we were up for the challenge! We started with the Spicy Feta Spread and the Stuffed Eggplant. Very tasty! For our entrees, we went family style and ordered the Gemista (stuffed tomato and green pepper), Pork Souvlaki Platter, and the Lamb Chops. Everything was amazing! Nothing not to LOVE about this place. The meal was perfect all the way through from the first sip of a cocktail to the dessert. Service was great. If you have the time, reserve your table well in advance to ensure you can eat on the top level, however; the seating matters the least when the food is this food. I visited there with my family after reading some positive reviews on Yelp. We don't go to too many places in downtown Raleigh so this was an opportunity to support a local business there. The atmosphere was very friendly and inviting. There was Greek-themed music playing in the background. The use of wood all throughout the restaurant with nice touches of greenery was very comforting. We went there in the early afternoon on a Sunday brunch so it was not crowded inside. There were stairs leading to a deck up top where you can eat and have a nice view of downtown, but we did not go up there. We'll save that for next time! The staff were pleasant and since this was our first time visiting there, we asked several questions about the menu. Our waiter was very accommodating and attentive to our needs. As for the food, the one word I can use that sums up everything is FRESH! Everything was home made with great care, and it tasted that way. My son had the meatballs, they were huge. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to taste them before he gobbled them down, but I did get a chance to try some of the tomato sauce. It was fabulous! Very fresh, perfect balance of herbs and spices. It would make a great soup if pureed too! My wife had the Chicken Penne Mykonos. She loved it. She even mentioned the freshness of all of the ingredients and the flavors in the dish. The chicken was very flavorful and tender. The pasta was cooked nicely and the white wine lemon cream sauce was light, bright flavored with the lemon and sooooo good! I had the gyro pita. I've tried lots of gyro pitas in the past and I wanted to compare this one to the others. It was no comparison. Again, everything was so fresh. The veggies were crisp, the tzatziki sauce was the perfect to accent the meal, light and had a lot of flavor. The gyro meat was seasoned just right and very tender. Best gyro pita I've had! We had the calamari for an appetizer. It was lightly fried and very tender. It seems like it just had salt for seasoning and that was enough. There was a spicy tomato sauce that went with it and like the sauce for the meatballs, it was very, very good! I had the spanakopita for an appetizer and it was amazing! 3 large sized pieces. They could almost be a meal by themselves. So much spinach was packed into each one. They were dense. I think phyllo dough that was used, and it was very, very flaky. Each one was lightly fried and not greasy. The spinach and feta were lightly seasoned which was nice because the lemon sauce that went with it was perfect with it. It was a bit tart as expected, with nice lemon flavor. It went well with the spanakopita. Overall, we really, really enjoyed our time there. I've eaten at Taverna Agora many times over the years, even when it was located in its original location on Glenwood. It has never disappointed. The past few times I have been for Sunday brunch. I've had the Greek omelette, the tomato feta scramble and most recently the baked eggs and pita. My favorite place to sit is upstairs on the open deck. It was a little warm this past Sunday when I went but still such a nice, relaxed vibe. The only downside was that our table was right next to the dishwashing station and it was SO LOUD. I swear it sounded like they were throwing the dishes. The baked eggs were delicious but I ordered mine without pita and then I had nothing to soak up all that yummy sauce with. I should have asked for a spoon to get every morsel. We didn't order cocktails but I saw some at another table and they looked delicious. Overall a great place to grab brunch. read more

Taverna Agora was the choice for brunch a few weeks ago. We lucked out on the weather with all the rain lately and were able to sit on the rooftop area to enjoy the fresh air and the nicely decorated area. The roof seating does require walking up a set of stairs so just be aware if stairs are an issue for you. I made reservations and we were seated on time but we did go at opening so that might make a difference. Service was friendly and attentive. I really wanted to give 5 stars but my chair was dirty with some sort of food on it so I swapped it with another table. Then my silverware was not clean so I had to go get replacements. I'm not sure why they wrapped dirty silverware in the napkin but attention to detail was lacking here. I went with the French Toast as I needed something soft as I was still in pain from my dental work. I would have enjoyed other dishes more but there is always next time. I'll start off by saying that I was VERY excited for this dinner for my mom's bday. My cousin recommended this place and I LOVE Mediterranean food. But unfortunately I have to give it only 3 stars. To start, we had reservations and still were not able to sit on the desired rooftop. It would have an extra 45 minute wait. So unless you have ample time and aren't very hungry, don't expect to get rooftop seating. So that started the meal off as a bummer already. The highlight of the meal was the drip trio: sun dried tomato hummus, tzatziki and spicy feta. These dips were delicious and the perfect start to the meal. I also ordered a Greek lemonade cocktail which was also tasty. Now to the main course, the Pastitcio. This dish was a huge disappointment and the reason for the 3 stars. There was absolutely no flavor in this dish. It was so incredibly bland. Which made the texture of the cheese even more undesirable. I was super excited for this fish since it sounded delish and included all sorts of yummy ingredients. But this just wasn't it. I ate about 1/4 of it before calling it quits. The seasonal veggie was zucchini and squash, neither of which I like, so I didn't even taste them. The appetizer, drink and service were good which is ultimately what gives this place 3/5 stars. But I'd definitely order something different as your main course. My mom and cousin got a different pasta, and it desperately needed salt and pepper. I guess they're afraid to season, lol. But it needed a lot more of it. I probably will not be back with all the options in Raleigh and regular access to some of the best Mediterranean food here in the triad. read more

Hands down the worst dining experience ever. It was blatant that our server did not prioritize our table because we were Asian. The treatment felt biased and dismissive from the start. We waited over 10 minutes before anyone came by, while tables seated after us were greeted and served immediately. Drinks took 20+ minutes, and another table that arrived later had already eaten, paid, and left before we got our food. Our food finally came after 1 hour and 20 minutes -- cold. When questioned, the server blamed family-style dining, our party size, and the kitchen being "slammed," none of which explained why other tables were served first. The dining room wasn't even busy, and once I complained to the manager, our food appeared almost instantly. Asking for the check was another ordeal -- ignored twice, and the third time we had to get up and approach her because she was busy taking photos for another table. By then, half our group had already walked out. The hostess was wonderful and the manager did try to step in, but the damage was done. What should have been a birthday celebration turned into an experience where we felt marginalized and unwelcome. We didn't expect special treatment -- just basic respect. We had a reservation for three of us at dinner time and we were able to request seating upstairs on the rooftop. The rooftop was super cute and nicely decorated and lit for the evening. We started with cocktails and wine before dinner. All three drinks were fabulous. We also split th tzatziki spread appetizer and it was so good I'm glad my friends suggested it. All three of us ordered the chicken souvlaki platter dinner and we were not disappointed. Everything was so fresh and full of flavor. Two of us ordered the side Greek salad to go along with the dinner and extra Kalamata olives. We were shocked when the olives arrived because we were each given a bowl full of them which was so worth it! I had themon chicken soup and the trio of all 3 spreads. They were just perfect and not too salty. The space is welcoming, very clean and bright during the day, but they dim down the lights a bit for the evening shift. The server was polite and helpful. This place is centrally located in Raleigh. First floor of this restaurant is like any other restaurant, but we were able to sit on the indoor "roof top" on the second floor. It was warm as it is still indoors, but it had lots of greens + windows. All of the dishes were well flavored (meat & veggies), and super filling. We were surprised by how soft the Hen was. Checked out Taverna Agora after hearing how amazing it is. I went for a later lunch. As I entered I was warmly greeted by the hostess and decided to sit at one of their tables connected to a long bench. The benches had comfy pillows that supported the back, which I liked! I checked out their menu and decided to start with their lemon chicken soup. The soup was warm and super hardy. I like that it had a nice hint of salt and sweetness and warmed me from the inside and out. For my meal I got the chicken kebabs, which came with a salad, fries, and tzaiki sauce. The salad was a mix of tomatoes, feta, and cucumber. Their was also supposed to be olives, but none were in the salad. You could tell the tomatoes were fresh and the waitress told me they are freshly sundried. I do not like tomatoes, but I could so eat these! The rest of the meal was okay with most of it being a little cold because of the room. The chicken and fries did not have a lot of seasoning and were rather bland. Minus two stars for the interior, which was super cold and made my food very cold. The main dining room has a ton of space with lots of tables, a bar, and kitchen. Possibly because of the size the warm air never made its way my way. And another star off for the okay service. I felt that my server could've been a little nicer and more attentive especially once I was her only table. She never checked in with me similar to other tables. Also, she was snappy when I mentioned to her that I did not like tomatoes. Her response a short and harsh "Well, you should've told me you didn't like tomatoes" and she walked away. It is the holiday season and I noticed she was walking with a limp, so perhaps she was tired. I would come back for a pot of the lemon chicken soup, but probably not an entree. read more

My date and I dined at Taverna Agora last night, March 18, 2025, on a first date. As a Greek, I was familiar with the dishes. We started with Spanakopita, which was very good. Then we ordered Pastitsio, which was fair. I typically don't order that dish when dining out because I prefer my own version, but it was decent. Lastly, we had the Souvlaki plate, which was very good! Regarding the service, we had to ask for a specific table away from other diners to be a little more private, and it seemed like the staff wasn't pleased with our request, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. Our server didn't introduce himself properly, so I didn't catch his name. Overall, we felt completely rushed throughout our dining experience. When our server, a young man, asked if we wanted dessert, we declined but requested a to-go box. He returned with the box and proceeded to remove everything from our table, including our utensils, which we could have used to scrape our plates. Instead, we had to use the skewer sticks. He stood there waiting for us to pay, not giving us a moment to digest our food. To top it off, he took our water glasses and even the one with beer that still had some left! He helped recommend drinks and dishes to the group. I did not drink, but the friend I was with who did get a cocktail said it was great. all of the food was delicious too. We ordered Dolmades (grape leaves) and flambéed saganaki for the table. The saganaki is lit table side and a treat to watch. I ordered the steak souvlaki platter for my entree and it came with pita, tzatziki, rice pilaf and sautéed peppers. It's almost impossible to leave room for dessert with how good everything was, but I did and got the traditional baklava. I love baklava and this did not disappoint!
