What a gem! Yes, it's a bit touristy -- but in the fun, festive, "you're on vacation and loving life" kind of way. Taverna El Glop wraps you up in its warm, lively atmosphere the second you walk in. We were a group of four, and from start to finish, we had an awesome time. The open kitchen is a great touch -- you can watch the chef in action, which adds to the energy and makes the whole experience feel more connected and authentic. We shared a bunch of dishes, and everything was on point. The paella was rich and delicious -- exactly what we came for. The patatas bravas were crispy, creamy, and gone in seconds, and the shishito peppers were the perfect salty, snacky starter. Of course, we had to get a pitcher of sangria (okay, maybe two), which was fruity, refreshing, and just strong enough to keep things festive. The space itself has this great, rustic charm -- complete with checkered tablecloths and even an old cigarette machine near the bar (haven't seen one of those since I was a kid -- aren't those banned in the U.S. now?). I don't smoke -- smoking sucks -- but it added a bit of unexpected nostalgia and character. Service was excellent. They were strict with reservation timing. Usually restaurants have a 15 minute grace period but we were 10 minutes late and had to wait. The Escalivada (roasted vegetables) was delicious and a good portion size. The Arroz Negro Paella was also were good and they were quite generous with the seafood. However, there were many broken clam shells in the dish and you have to be careful or you could lose a tooth. It's hard to see the little shells and I bit down on multiple. The server did not speak much English and the paella took a little time to come out. If I was in the area I would come back to try their mushroom paella and get the escalivida again. The server was very helpful and gave us the wifi access. The seafood paella was to die for. The octopus was perfectly cooked to tenderness. I honestly don't know what's the hype with this restaurant. We saw the great reviews and it being one of those places that serves traditional Catalan cuisine, we were so excited to book a reservation. The staffs were probably used to the long lines but they also have zero respect and time management for people that had reservations. We had to wait 30-40 min after our actual reservation time to get seated. It was like you might as well not have reservations if they don't even honor it or know how to manage it. I feel like there was also a slight preference for seating folks that spoke the language. The waiter seemed flustered after we opted for the English menu. I wasn't sure if he just simply didn't speak English well or he just did not like the fact that we didn't speak his language. The food was average, nothing really stood out to me. I actually also had one of the worst dish I had from our trip to Spain - the cod fish salad. It might just be I'm not a big fan of the dish itself but I was speechless tasting the dish. For starters, make reservations. Came here multiple times and it was hopping each visit. Euro and cards are accepted. And staff speaks English. As for parking, if you happen to be driving - no comment. Didn't pay attention as I didn't drive in Barcelona. Hoofed it everywhere when not using public transportation. Service was excellent. **January 2023 Sunday, Tuesday, & Wednesday Visit: Late Lunch** It's not often that I go to a restaurant twice (let alone three ties in the same week) so when I tell you I LOVED this restaurant you should bookmark it. *Location This seems to be located in a more gentrified/hipster area as I walked past many vegan/gluten-free restaurants and yoga studios. As such I believe this is not the prime tourist location. *Clientate On my first visit I noticed a LOT of Chinese guests sitting outside the patio, which made me wonder if I myself should have known about this place. On my second and third visit I noticed a lot of locals, both large (6 people) and small parties (2) dine in. Despite coming on three different weekdays for lunch it was ALWAYS packed (with both locals and tourists) *Items Ordered APPETIZERS Cargols Llauna (19.90): This is in essence land snails cooked in a llauna (tin pan) in an oven. Patrons are given big toothpicks to scoop out the meat in each shell which is floating in butter and garlic. It's quite decadent so this is definitely best shared. Calçot a la brasa (12.75): Calçotare are oversize scallion with an extra-long white stalk and they look completed burnt when you order them - though you peel off the burnt exterior and eat the inside with a dipping sauce. This seasonal item is enjoyed in the later winter months (January/February). It's a lot of work to peel off the charred parts (as I'm a noob), but I really enjoyed the sweetness and am glad I finally got to try it! We actually ordered this twice! Esparrecs De Marge (8.40): Grilled asparagus. Grilled to perfection these were a nice healthy start to a meal. Botifarra Aragonesa (8.75): My friend ordered this sausage dish which came with a really large sausage and beans. It was certainly a good sausage, but was outshined by the other dishes here. Pota Pop Mojo / Piny (24.60): Coal Grilled Octopus with caramelized pineapple and mojo sauce. Fantastic. It was nice and charred on the outside and chewy on the inside. Loved it. ENTREES Arros Negre Sipi (18.20 x 2): Black rice with cuttlefish and clams - These paellas are made to order with a minimum of two orders and was the star of the meal. The exterior may look intimidating but once you scoop it out of the pan you will be amazed by how flavorful and hot (temperature hot) this dish really is which was perfect for a breezy day. The cuttlefish and calamari have a nice soft and chewy texture with the rice and while I couldn't tell what other seafood was in the dish since everything was black I really enjoyed it! Definitely get this! Arros Conill I C (19.80x 2): Rice with rabbit and snails. This was a very odd combination, but tasted delicious. The rabbit honestly, tastes like chicken thighs and I really loved eatting the mushrooms with the rice. The snails were a little work to get all the rice and the actual snail out, but we still licked the plate clean. I really liked all the flavors of this dish! Fideau Estil Tar (17.25 x 2): Fideua Tarragona Style (Pasta Paella). Spain is known for paella, a rice dish, but this part of Spain is known for the noodle alternative - fideu. This dish was fabulous. It had lots of seafood and it was seasoned very well; however, my preference is still rice over noodles as I think the rice soaks in the broth a little more - hence giving it more flavor. Nevertheless, if you want to try a signature dish this is very good. Cua D'vedella Vi Neg (25.00): Red Wing Braised Beef Tail with Baby Onions - This red wine Oxtail was fall off the bone tender. It was succulent and soft. It kind of reminded me of the meat in Chinese beef noodle soup, but it's really hearty with the red wine sauce. The meat was delicious, but I sort of wished that we could order rice on the side so that it could soak up all that delicious sauce. I would still order this again though! DRINKS Aigua (2.35): Bottled water. Unlike the States, water isn't complimentary and always served in a bottle. Coca Cola (2.85 x 2): Bottled coke. From what I could tell this is made from cane sugar and not high frutose syrup. *Summary -Call to make a reservation, this restaurant is always busy! -Order a Paella and any of the appetizers I tried. They were all great! -Paellas are made to order so plan on waiting at least 20-30 minutes -Go and you will not be disappointed! read more

When you think of Spain, you think of paella! This dish was on our "must-eat" list for our Barcelona vacation and Taverna el Glop did not disappoint. We come on a Tuesday evening around 7PM after visiting Parc Guell. We called ahead as we were exiting Parc Guell to give them a heads up. Luckily the Spanish eat late...restaurant didn't get busy until after 8PM! Some food and drink highlights: + Sangria! Four pitchers for ten ppl (not too sweet) + Fresh octopus and fried potatoes (octopus was extra sweet and fresh tasting!) + Cheese & cracker plate + Prosciutto + Paella: squid ink, seafood, and rabbit & snail (favorite was the seafood because of the great umami mix of flavors...but all three were tasty!) For the PAELLA, they let you order by individual servings. We did a couple servings of the seafood and rabbit & snail, and four servings of the squid ink. In hindsight, that was a tiny bit too much food because we also ordered a lot of appetizers for our party of ten. Came here for lunch on the walk down from Park Guell. I had preplanned this restaurant because I knew I wanted to try their seafood paella (my first paella experience!). Glop. It's not a name that inspires a culinary fantasy meal. It's the sound of a scoop of oatmeal hitting the steel plate as you move down the chow line at San Quentin as you plan your clandestine break with your cellmate Bubba. It also happens to be the name of a popular taverna in Barcelona's boho-friendly/old world Gràcia neighborhood that happens to serve a most delicious pan of paella. Everyone will tell the first-time Catalonia visitor to go to 7 Portes in Barceloneta for paella, which was indeed quite good but also catered more to the tourist trade with the higher prices to match (review: http://bit.ly/2zgMAJe). Glop definitely feels more like a neighborhood place that serves more home style cooking across a broad range of Catalan dishes you would likely find at Sunday supper in a nearby family kitchen. Jamie W. and I happened upon this place before taking the upward hike to the Bunkers del Carmel and Park Güell, so we needed some sustenance. Besides we had been behaving fairly well on our diet regimen during our vacation and felt we deserved something rib-sticking and old-fashioned like paella unfiltered and packed with flavor. Before that though, we felt we should start with a salad and chose the modestly priced 6€ Ensalada de la Casa "El Glop", a ridiculously generous and tasty "house salad" full of ingredients both expected (spinach, tomatoes, carrots, red cabbage, corn kernels) and unexpected (tuna, pickles, hard-boiled eggs) - definitely a meal in itself with the requisite dousing of oil and vinegar (photo: http://bit.ly/2iVXgXH). It was quite an abundant serving of seafood paella in a well-worn pan unlike the politely modest portions to be found at 7 Portes. This tapas style restaurant in Barcelona was one of my favorite. They have tons of options and seem to really put great effort into all their dishes. I particularly liked the paella (seafood), maybe one if not the best one I had in all of Madrid. It was just super well prepared and soooooo much taste. I expected a really fishy taste , since it was seafood, but the rice had an amazing rice taste with minimum fish taste, and the seafood in it was all nicely cooked. Their sangrias here are also a big hit and were real tasty for sure. I I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Barcelona. I promise you will not be disappointed. We were resisting having paella. It's Spain, but it's also Barcelona, so, is paella something locals eat? In other words, were we being totally lame? A super simple pork chop basically just letting the natural flavor of Iberico pork speak for itself - which is the most porkiest of all pork flavors. This has ruined all other pork for me. Nothing really compares. There's just no point in eating any other pork. Except that I can't get this anywhere else but in Spain... so, I'll just have to accept inferior pork as what it is... #veryfirstworldproblems Anyhow, I highly recommend this place... Our group of 4 ordered the Cuttlefish, squid and black rice, Catalan pork sausage, veal steak and the assorted grilled meats. This also came with rabbit. We all enjoyed ours very much and washed it all down with a bottle of cava. Desserts were the cheesecake, creama Catalan, truffle ice cream and the nut cream. It a tavern tucked on a corner of side streets, west of Sagrada Familia, fifteen minutes by walk. The restaurant was packed with locals (particularly big families) for late Sunday gatherings. We were initially turned away since we didn't have reservation. We could have ordered just one of the two and would had been beyond satisfied. One person portion was more than enough to feed two. If you're looking for paella that's as good as you've imagined it to be, come straight here and nowhere else. Although I've had paella in Spain several times, none blew me away like the perfect iteration that is at El Glop. My parents and I got the black paella and it was SO flavorful and had so many seafood ingredients in it instead of being mostly rice. Seriously, please order this for your own good. We also had the pork cheek, Catalonian sausage, mixed veggies with goat cheese and octopus. Out of all those, I'd recommend the pork cheek but the rest were personally not my favorite (although the goat cheese is FANTASTIC). We meant to order the grilled veggies but I accidentally ordered the wrong version, no biggie. To our amusement, we noticed several tables around us eating huge green onions. My parents asked our wonderful waiter (Dani, I believe) about the possibility of ordering just two instead of a whole plate, and he offered to bring out just two just for them. They were delighted, and Dani was so great about explaining how to eat them as well. He was also very attentive and cheerful despite the madhouse El Glop became around prime dinner time, ~ 10 PM. The place was a bit touristy, but still reasonably priced and very tasty. I had the black rice which was incredibly flavorful and loaded with cuttle fish. Portions were very big. Would definitely recommend. read more

The food was great. The pictures do not truly do justice to the Chef's creations as the paellas were elegant in taste. My tonque had a terrific Tango as the flavors and ingredients entered the land of palate. The service could be better, though. When it got a little crowded the waiters lost their sense of service and attentiveness. I guess it was the language barrier. We did use sign language but they were not paying attention. I wanted to take home the left over grilled pato (duck). It ended up in the trash can. Oh well... We'll see...I wanted to go back and try the black squid paella. Redemption in 2nd chances! read more

If you're looking for really good, traditional paella, El Glop is definitely the place to go. It is located in the Gràcia neighborhood, which has tons of cute shops and trendy restaurants to stroll between. A friend recommended El Glop for paella, and we were not disappointed. The price for a serving was around 15€, depending on the type of paella you got. We ordered a pitcher of white sangria (yum!) and decided to just get the vegetable paella. We loved it! If anything, the service was just okay at this place. Our waiter was super impatient with us, messed up our order at first, then rolled his eyes at us when we told him it was wrong/asked him nicely to fix it. This is a good choice for an inexpensive meal with traditional Catalonian food - it's definitely not fancy, so don't expect any gastronomy or pretty plating, but the portions are large, and it's a good place to come with a large group. Calcots a la Brasas (11€) - We got these fresh green onions (they look like small leeks) that are grilled/ roasted and eaten with a romesco sauce. We went in the spring and saw almost all the other tables had these too. It's popular & in season in the spring so if you are in Barcelona during the time, this is a great place to eat them. They give you a bib and plastic gloves since it's a little messy. The plate of the onions is huge - we were almost full after sharing just this dish. Arroz Negro (14,80 €) - This was a huge dish of squid ink black rice with a big shrimp and mussels. It was good and it's a good pick if you want seafood and something filling and hearty. Secreto Iberico (13,65 €) - To balance out the seafood, we got some pork. It came with 2 potatoes and a tomato. It was good, but nothing super memorable for me. Looking back at all the meals and meat I've had in Barcelona over the course of a few trips this year, this was good but doesn't stand out for me. Overall, huge portions and a good choice if you're hungry and on a budget. Note that the dishes are not tapas sized - they are quite large - we could have gotten away with just ordering 2 things to share between the 2 of us, but glad we got a little variety of the calcots, seafood, and pork. I'd rate this somewhere between 3.5-4 stars. We came around 2 pm on a weekend and it was packed but we didn't have to wait since the space is pretty large. read more
