The food, unfortunately, was inconsistent: 1. Spreads: tzatziki and htipiti were fantastic; fava was good but a clear third place. I'd buy the first two to go if I could. 5/5 2. Octopus: a bit small but well-cooked and not at all chewy. Would order again. 4/5 3. Squash fritters: these were just bad; lukewarm and what little flavor there was was unappealing. 1/5 4. Lentil soup: extremely bland; badly needed more seasoning. 2/5 5. Sesame crusted feta: this had potential, but was let down by being extremely salty. 3/5 6. I've been coming to Brunswick since I was born and this is my favorite restaurant in town... and to think I only found it this past summer! Taverna Khione is a welcome change from the all too common blt, fish & chips, and lobster roll fare in the area. Don't get me wrong, those are all good, but sometimes you need something different! The Food: -I recommend starting with the Tzatziki and bread. The Fava is good too, but the Tzatziki is just a little better. -Next, you MUST order the Soutzoukakia -- "Veal and beef meatballs with cumin and allspice; white wine-tomato sauce," according to their website, and oh so yummy. -Last time I was there, I got the special which was veal... no one was more surprised than I was when it stole the show! Their lamb is usually very good as well. That being said, they do change up their menu and I would definitely ask your server what they recommend. -Finish it all off with a greek coffee. Yamas! Service: I know a lot of folks have complaints about the service. And while you definitely can't expect to be fawned over here, our food has always been very timely. This won't be helpful for visitors, but as we've become regulars the service has improved and we quite enjoy that aspect as well now. Reservations: You need to make one. Every time I've eaten here people have been turned away. Parking: There is a small lot to the left of the Taverna. We've never had trouble finding parking there. P.S. Walked in with a group of 2 on a Wednesday evening for dinner. I did not think I'd need a reservation and half of the restaurant was empty. The waitresses asked us to wait outside on the street to see if she could seat us. Waited about 5 minutes and she did not come back! Another wonderful experience at our favorite spot in Brunswick! The pepper and pureed feta appetizer was perfectly spicy. The lemon soup balanced skilfully. I had the whole sea bass and it was exactly the right doneness and seasoned just right. My hubby actually liked the red ale and the red wine i enjoyed was smooth and full of flavor. Wonderful restaurant in Brunswick, probably the best since Tao Yuan took a three year pandemic break. We loved the bread and taramosalata, potatoes, and pepper spreads. Then we moved on to zucchini fritters, the baked phyllo pie with leeks (amazing!) and the salad which was over the top good. On to the mains which included the MASSIVE moussaka, the stuffed pepper and the veal sausages all of which were also very yummy. We've gone to Khione many times and enjoyed the seafood and the remarkable selection of wines, especially the amazing xinomavros. The new waiter is excellent, friendly and knowledgeable!! read more

This place is so dishonest!! Do not go here! I made a reservation for 3 at 12:00 then found out that my guest's flight was delayed so I called and canceled at about 2:00 the same day. I was told "no problem" they then charged my card 75.00. When I spoke to the angry man on the phone he rudely and insisted on charging me. OpenTable said that they didn't charge me the restaurant did. I would not give this place business nor would I trust them with my credit card number. I have worked in the service industry and have never seen this type of greed before from a restaurant. Watch out for this place!!!! read more

Hallelujah - this restaurant makes me so happy. We decided to check Taverna Khione on a whim realizing we were both free one chilly Saturday night. We drove up to Brunswick and experienced pure heaven. The atmosphere is homey and almost like a private dining experience. We went all out and got way too many dishes - but it was all worth it. Get prepared to eat SO MUCH FETA. The grilled feta with honey was epic. Get all the spreads and all the bread. They make the bread in house and it's all really mouth watering, if you can't tell. The spinach and Philo dough was cooked perfectly - get the lamb as an entree if you can really appreciate a perfectly cooked juicy, medium rare piece of lamb meat. For dessert, we enjoyed the Batak (kind of like philo with a more custardy rice pudding filling, with a specialty rose dessert liquor. If you enjoy spots like Lost kitchen and primo you will love Taverna Khione. Thank you thank you for such a wonderful meal! read more

It pains me to give this 3 stars, because I really wanted to give it more. I love Greek food. I spent most of my 20s living in a Greek neighborhood, many of my friends are from or 1st generation Greeks. I didn't feel like I was a stranger to Greek food until my experience here and I left just a little disappointed. Interior: Stark interior, it was clean and cute, but SO QUIET. We got here early and there was no music, no sound. It was just a little awkward. There are only about 10 tables inside, spaced enough that even if they were all full it wouldn't feel like you were on top of anyone. Service: Look, if you're reading reviews anywhere before you go here, you know service is an issue. I will say, I did not feel like SERVICE was bad. She was attentive, our food came out quickly, everything was correct. The woman who I assume owns it is gruff and you didn't feel particularly welcome. Having been to many many Greek restaurants in New York, this is not unusual, but still felt like a hair worse then I had expected. For example, the menu is using traditional names for food. TOTAL respect. But I felt a little shame or annoyance that we couldn't pronounce items. Or one item said it was with TK Pasta. My father-in-law asked what it was. The answer was the name of the restaurant. Sure, but that doesn't tell me anything about the pasta. What makes the so-so attitude feel a little worse is that it is SO QUIET inside! Food: I am jealous of reading everyone else's food reviews because to be honest, the menu just didn't hit for me. It changes, so you need to check the website before you go. The menu online was dated for a month ago, so I just just hoped that it had changed by now or they had a few specials. No and no to both of those. They had a nice selection of various dips and delicious rustic bread. Everyone loved tzatziki and the roasted pepper feta dip. I wish we had gotten a little more bread (pet peeve of mine is when the food to dip ratio is not balanced) or maybe some veggies to go with it. Also, no olives or hummus on the menu as I had expected with the dips. For the salad/soups/other apps section, we had a cheese honey sesame philo dough dish. My husband liked it, I could have taken or left it (knowing the desert menu had a similar item). What I was disappointed in was no just traditional greek or peasant salad, I know it's super basic, but the only salad on the menu was a seafood salad which would not have worked for our group. Entrees: Both my in-laws got the pasitito and both liked it. It was the only thing on the entrees menu that I had eaten before. My husband got a beef cheeks dish which he said was just ok but not really for him. I had skate, which I had never had before. It was cooked about as well as I think you could cook it, was buttery and flavorful but I just don't think I'd ever get it again. It came with a dish I had looked up ahead of time and said it was a potato puree, but it was ice cold. My friends said it was supposed to be, so I guess not liking it was just on me. It was like a cold, garlic dip. What I had HOPED for was a mousaka or swordfish and lemon potatoes or spanakopita. Dessert: The dessert menu is the best part. Everything looked and sounded delish. We got baklava and a custard pastry, both were excellent. Wine: Impressive wine list, but felt pricy at $13 for a 5oz pour. Phew, ok. I knew this review was going to be long bc I wanted to be specific. My tips for people going: - Look at the menu ahead of time. If it doesn't look great, go back another time. We had a nice time and it's good to try new things, but the bill total to have left disappointed was not great. The food is all made VERY well and presented super nicely, but we took a gamble and it didn't really pay off. - If you have very strong expectations of friendly service and think you can't get past it, maybe not the spot for you. - We ordered a little TOO much. It's starchy food. I wish instead of my skate dish I had just gotten a fritter or soup. - If you want to try it but the menu looks too advanced, I would say go once, get some dips and a glass of wine and some desserts. I'll def check the menu every once in a while to see if it's changed any. I appreciated the super authentic cuisine, but just wish they had included one or two other iconic Greek dishes. read more

We had an excellent meal here. Some points/reaction to some of the lukewarm or even negative reviews: --it reminded me of some places we ate at in Italy. Small, a single seating for the evening, attentive but relaxed and non-invasive service for a prolonged meal. We lucked out and walked in, but I expect most nights you'd need a reservation for this type of experience. --everything was fresh-tasting and beautifully prepared. I had a whole sea bass that was out-of-this world good. We also shared the pie appetizer (kale in this case rather than spinach), which was also amazing. --an extensive wine list of Greek varietals which you'd have a hard time tracking down in the U.S., much less in mid-Coast Maine. If you walk in and expect to be fawned over like in some less impressive restaurants, you'll be out of luck. The proprietress answered our questions about the menu graciously but a little cooly, but when I asked about the types of wine on the list she generously brought out a couple to taste. She opened one specifically for us to try. She greeted many of her guests by their names and chatted in a very friendly manner to some out-of-staters at a table across the room from us. For comparison, in our preceding dining experience the waitress was super obsequious but plopped down our entree before we were halfway through the appetizer. Food was delicious, however the server was more like Seinfeld's soup nazi...red pepper and feta spread along with skordHaliA was delish... so was oxtail. I've never been to a restaurant where the person takes your food order, interrupts you as you tell them what you want to drink, and leaves to tell the kitchen the food order. She then returned to get our drink order. Subsequently after that, it was almost impossible to get her help. In fact, anytime after we were initially served, when I spoke up, she interrupted me, and would say one second, to then not return to the table. I had to aggressively ask for another glass of wine. She also insisted that my husband drink his beer out of a glass. When we asked for the check I asked her to tell the chefs..she interrupted me to say "singular"...and then walked away. I wanted her to tell them it was delicious. Since she had no interest in listening to any of our requests the entire time, I got up before we left and told the chef himself how delicious the food was. We ate here on Saturday and I am still thinking about the meal. We happened to pop in knowing we probably wouldn't get a table without a reservation, and the host/waitress agreed to give us an hour with the understanding we wouldn't be able to order everything on the menu. Everything was terrific and the food felt like a warm hug--perfect after a cold hike in the woods. We ordered the feta and pepper spread, Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves), and Vareniki (pasta filled with potato and feta in a brown butter onion sauce). The Vareniki was the real winner here--I felt like I was at a grandmother's kitchen table. The wine and baklava were also on point. A lot of the reviews say the host/waitress was gruff, which I could see, but she was also welcoming an accommodating at the same time. Don't let that inform your experience! We dropped our daughter off at Bowdoin college and were staying in Brunswick for the night before heading back to New York. We tried a few other restaurants that were a bit higher rated on yelp, but they were all closed on Tuesday (thankfully), so we ended up going to Taverna Khione, and it was spectacular! We started with two spreads for the bread (tzatziki and the feta spread), and it was a home run, out of the park! My wife had the Greek salad and zucchini fritters, and a mom of another first year who joined us had the meatballs, and I had the swordfish, and they were all truly five stars. We had a few glasses of the Asertiko wine, which was de-lish. Coming from New York, and used to going to some really great restaurants, I wasn't expecting a lot in Brunswick, but Taverna Khione knocked it out of the park, can't recommend it highly enough! read more

Being Greek, we were excited to try the restaurant. Cute, well decorated and quaint. Very clean, and one might feel you were actually in a Greek village. On arrival, not the most welcoming. Water served immediately with drinks and the first course timed well. The food was outstanding. Fresh, and what one might expect from Greece. Why not five stars? I had dinner at this restaurant on a Tuesday with a couple of Brunswick locals. The Greek wines are delicious and not easy to come by, so take advantage. We had grilled octopus and cuttlefish with fava mash. Then, we ordered both the specials - rabbit papperdelle and duck breast - plus incredible skate sauteed in duck fat. It's a shame that I have to give this restaurant a one star because the food is quite good. The problem is that the one and only waitress is supremely rude, arrogant and gruff and lacks the finesse necessary to deal with customers of an upscale establishment. It's not clear if her decisions are the policy of the owner/management but she turns down customers when the restaurant is half empty with no reservations. She has also refused takeout on several occasions claiming it's too busy when there are only two other parties in the restaurant and the manner in which she did so was very rude. I'm a regular customer, I supported this restaurant during Covid but unfortunately, I will no longer be going back as long as she is still working the tables. read more

This small restaurant is in an old building in downtown Brunswick. Decor was simple and service knowledgeable and attentive. This is an expensive place, but the quality of the food is absolutely commensurate with the cost. The menu changes monthly, so the things we had will likely be gone, but from the delicious food we had, we expect whatever menu we encounter to be just as good. We started with Taramosalata (very good - a bit runny but delicious), Tzatziki (excellent - thick - we spread it like butter), both served with a lovely artisan bread and a plate of Htapodi (octopus). The grilled octopus hors d'oeuvre was excellent. We got about a 6" piece of a very large tentacle, about an inch across, and a piece of the mantle. The dish nicely balanced the grilled, seared, skin with the mild, clean, sea taste of the octopus. This dish was particularly nice for us, because we genuinely tasted the octopus, a mild, subtle flavor that generally gets lost in breading and sauce. The dish required a knife to cut, of course, but was not tough or rubbery. It was served on a well executed bed of mashed fava beans and onions, with a caper berry. For main course, I had Pastitsio, a common feel-good layered favorite. Again, it was excellent, with a tantalizing hint of cinnamon in the creamy layer over the baked pasta and mild, tender, and juicy ground meat below. My partner had the Arni Paithakia (grilled lamb chops with lemon potatoes). The meat was flavorful, tender, and perfectly cooked, and the lemony potatoes were a lovely zingy counterpoint. And, we finished our meal with Vatomouro, a sort of cake, compressed out of shredded filo dough, with raspberries. It was tender, moist and fairly dense, with intense raspberries. It was served with a scoop of some of the finest raspberry ice-cream I remember. Lastly, we had a scoop of pine sap flavored ice-cream. Really. The resin taste is balanced, and doesn't overpower the vanilla and sugar flavors. As our server pointed out, is made a lovely palate cleanser. We have vowed to return for another sampling of this excellent Greek food. read more

Our third or fourth trip (the dishes are easier to remember than the dates we came). It's small and carefully curated. Get a reservation. Not tonight's option-- but the prix fixe Sunday night is worth the price as we learned with six of us last time. The Greek wines are indeed delicious. The Prince white makes people light up when they taste it. And The Sun, the red, is a great choice for those who like a big wine. It's a slow deliberate meal without being long. Zucchini fritters yes! Special grilled cheese with fig appetizer? Yes! The pasta underlying the duck & mushrooms special was as tasty as the sauce. The lamb chops are always good. Visited on a Tuesday night (overheard as one of their busier nights), place is small, quaint and cute. Make a reservation in advance as walk ins were unfortunately turned away. Reminded me of being in Europe, they are small for a reason, calmly paced meal, good service, there is no rush here, take your time, eat and enjoy. Get lots of the dips to start, highly recommend the potato one. The grilled bread accompaniment is fantastic. We didn't have the octopus as my wife is not a fan but it looked incredible, the zucchini fritters & filo pie were excellent. For entrees, wifey had the Moussaka and me the Swordfish, again, both excellent. I was distracted the entire time as I had a view of the kitchen, chef/owner knows what he is doing. While shopping at the outlets, a local Brunswick resident told us about this place and it did not disappoint! A little off the main drag but probably to their benefit. Small plates are wonderful-the grilled octopus was amazing and the spreads/bread were delicious. We ordered so many of the small plates we didn't have room for a big dinner.
