As a novice of woodworking, I was blown-away by the intricate woodwork and finishings throughout the home. The three ladies that lead our tour of the home shared many interesting details about the property, its restoration, and details of Clara and Henry's years at the estate. Many of the restoration stories, like finding a tub for Henry's bathroom or how Clara had a section repainted white were intriguing. Even though much of the home, especially the second floor, is still being restored it was a fascinating experience.

There wasn't much actually open amongst the majestic-looking buildings while I was there, but the picnic area was hopping. The signage was bilingual-in English and Arabic-and what appeared to be a Yemeni wedding seemed to be taking place. The juxtaposition of the estate of an industrialist (or robber baron, or visionary, or racist, depending on your point of view) with a distinctive immigrant community makes for a striking reflection on Americana. The grounds include some gardens, and a lake with a path around it. Access to the river is limited, but it didn't look like that impressive of a river. The greenery is more worthwhile.

I can't believe I've never reviewed Schwartz's. Honestly, I was never really into plants until we…read moremoved to our current location and the flower bed next to our front porch had some perennials planted from the previous owner. That was amazing to me, what do you mean they come back every year? LOL That was many years ago and I'm happy to say that both of my flower beds are now filled with wonderful annuals and perennials every doing e. And the majority of them have come from here. Why? Their prices are fair, their quality is excellent, they have a huge variety and their staff are super friendly. There are greenhouses much closer to where I live but Schwartz's is worth the extra drive!

And it's not that that it's anything particularly unique (although some of those supertunia's are REALLY cool looking), they just happen to carry a lot more stock of other annuals outside of begonias and petunias. I went to a couple of shops before going to Schwartz's and I found things I hadn't elsewhere including flats of a variety of zinnias, marigolds, TONS of dahlias this time around (both large plants and smaller), a few varieties of alyssum and lantana for my pollinators, snap dragons, etc. Oh and SO many different types of tomatoes in both smaller starter sizes and more established plants. Prices have crept up over the years like most places but they're still mid-range. Meaning they're not the cheapest in the area but still more affordable than a lot of competitors/big box stores and the quality and selection is top notch. Staff is also really lovely and helpful (pointing me in the direction of the herbs when I couldn't find them) and I'm still amazed how they can check out these massive carts of flowers and flats so effortlessly. I would go nuts trying to make sense of it all. It's truly a gift and they're all great at what they do.

I wish they had a more up to date city page with better info and hours..maybe even a map and a few photos. Entry cost wasn't bad. It's a lot cheaper then a zoo bit also a slot smaller then a zoo too. We saw the farm/zoo cat. They had lots of ducks, some donkeys, a few cows, pigs and goats. And then maybe alpacas? I'm not sure. Very long necks. We went at about 75 degrees. The time was 11ish but they do say the animals are more active when it's cooler out. So 75 degrees should give you an idea. The goats were very friendly. They enjoyed being pet and stood there for a long time for us. One of the pigs came over too. The cat liked being pet but only a certain way. And if you didn't do it. You got a reminder gentle bite, but a bite nonetheless. The cows, alpacas, ducks and donkeys were not interested in coming over. The animals were all fed around noon which was a cool time to be there too. Word if caution, the fence is vinyl. One if the cows got excited it was gonna be fed and bumped into the fence. It bowed so badly, it scared me and I pulled my kiddo back. They are quite powerful.

Everything is very accessible for kids; and safe. There are workers who bring out various small animals for kids to pet. The goats, of course, are always by the fence wanting food.
