This was my 4th surgery on my left knee, but my first with Dr Dunphy. I had tears at both ends of my meniscus and a partial tear of the ACL I had replaced in 2016. I am 5 days post-op and am feeling incredible. I have had no pain since I woke up from the surgery. I was walking the same day and as of today I am going up and down my stairs normally (not one step at a time). I've also been doing 15 minute walks twice a day. The ace bandage and ice machine have been key to keeping the swelling down, but super happy with the results. This is the best I've ever felt so quickly after surgery. Two months after my injury, I met with Dr. Dunphy, unsure of what was wrong. After exams and an MRI, he confirmed my injury, explained what it was, and outlined the treatment and recovery plan. Back in June I broke my clavicle mountain biking. After having a horrible experience with a previous Dr (who told me it would heal on its own even though the bone looked like it was going to pop out of the skin) I went to Dr Dunphy for a second opinion. Dr Dunphy told me it would require surgery and thoroughly explained what was wrong. He actually took the time to go over my x-rays and even tried seeing if he could set it back in place on his own. It wouldn't hold but at least he tried. He was nice, professional, and didn't have any problem answering questions. It was clear that he takes pride in his work and actually wanted to help me to get better... basically the complete opposite of the previous Dr. The surgery went great and after 2 months I'm almost back to 100%. Physical Therapy has been going great and I'm even able to hit a speed bag with no pain! I've been to two hospitals mission, which is the worst and then Sand Canyon. I got three opinions from an accident that I was in Mission Hospital. Had a PA come in and told me I need surgery. I told her walk her turn around walk out then the doctor came in. He was obnoxious and told me you don't need surgery. just put a sleeve on you'll be walking in a week. Then I went to Sand Canyon went to the ER where the nurses were fantastic, but the doctor there in the ER was arrogant and yelled at me and told me I need surgery surgery surgery. The social worker named Bree was very nasty. All I kept asking was can I go to a specialist? I found Dr.Dunphy he walked told me you want the good news. The bad news I said give me the good news. I don't need surgery. I smiled and then I was stuck for two months not walking on it so I'm really happy with Dr. Dunphy. I think he's caring he understands he knows what he's talking about and I really appreciate it. On a Saturday I found myself at Hoag Urgent care after a bad injury to my knee. I was in a STAT MRI on a Monday morning and was given a list of Doctors from Newport Orthopedic. I needed to see a specialist ASAP. I was given a handful of Doctors names that were able to see me the next day and by fate I chose Dr. Taylor Dunphy. I felt comfortable with him from the beginning. I injured my knee a few months ago while cycling and wanted to wait on it and see if it got any better. It progressively got worst and worst but I didn't feel safe going into a doctor's office during this time. However, I was referred to Dr. Dunphy by a friend who had an amazing experience with him. Bottom line: HE'S OUTSTANDING! I cannot recommend him enough! The employees at Newport Orthopedic Institute took care of me from the moment I called to make the appointment to when I left the building. Dr. Dunphy listened and understood my concerns and also gave me options for my treatment! I cannot thank him enough! Pros: - As I mentioned, I was hoping that my knee pain would disappear on its own but as weeks went by, I knew that I had to see a doctor. I wanted to stay away from surgery, if possible, and I wanted all my options laid out in front of me. Dr. Dunphy was very caring during our visit, asked all the necessary and important questions and knew all the answers to my concerns. I got xrays done in the office and he thoroughly went over them with me so I could better understand what was going on with my knee. It was obvious that he knew exactly what he was talking about. He understood that because I am still young and active, I didnt want to do anything invasive that also had a long recovery period. After a productive and thorough conversation with him, physical therapy is what we both agreed on! He gave me is recommendation for a PT clinic and also some exercises I could do at home. He saw me back after a couple of weeks of PT and I could tell how much my knee and pain has improved. My range of motion has definitely improved since my first visit and I was cleared to return to cycling short distances! - Staff was amazing! I called to make an appointment and was able to be fitted in within a week. The receptionist was welcoming and patient with me since it was my first time there and the back office employee was quick to call me back! I could tell that their employees have been trained very well and that they really do care about the patients! - NOI takes COVID very seriously and I felt so safe in their office. They do a temperature screen at the door and also ask you questions about your recent travels and symptoms. They are not allowing any plus 1's which keeps the number of people inside to a bare minimum (love that!) There is hand sanitizer everywhere you go and staff and patients were all wearing mask! The waiting room had markers where you were able to sit so no one was sitting close to anyone else. Cons: NONE! Overall, Dr. Dunphy is an amazing and efficient doctor with outstanding bedside manner! Not only did he help fix my knee, but I truly felt like he listened and understood my concerns. I highly recommend anyone and everyone to see Dr. Dunphy for your orthopedic needs! My bicep tendon totally severed during bowling in Dec 2020. Without hesitation, I immediately contacted Dr. Dunphy's office for consultation. My brother had a totally severed right thigh muscle in 2019 that Dr. Dunphy did an outstanding reattachment of the thigh muscle. He recovered completely. I found out that my bicep tendon was already partially torn before the final snap. MRI also found that I had a torn right shoulder rotator cuff that needed repair. Dr. Dunphy said with a bicep tendon, I could live with it but if reattach, should do it soon. Personnel at Newport Orthopedic Institute were friendly and efficient in setting up all the necessary tests at Hoag and at their Institute before the surgery at the institute. Surgery was set up for two weeks after the injury. Surgery went extremely well. Dr. Dunphy was able to retrieve my tendon that unexpectedly drop down to my elbow and get it reattached to the shoulder. He also did the shoulder rotator cuff repair. Four months after the surgery, I am able to do the day to day activities again. I had a great physical therapist but it starts with a great surgeon like Dr. Dunphy. A relative of mine who is a physical therapist said that it makes a big difference which surgeon performs the operation as well as the therapist afterwards. I injured my knee earlier this year and It was the first time I've had an injury like this. I was very nervous and unsure about what would happen. I went to see Dr Dunphy in the Newport Beach location and he was excellent! They took X-rays and read them to me promptly. I saw Dr. Dunphy re my knee about 2+ years ago. My knee was swelling up and going down...swelling up and going down and hurt constantly but really hurt when the cyst would swell up . I got an mri of it and it showed that i had a tear in my meniscus and a ganglion cyst. I was told surgery was the only option but he was not pushy at all about getting surgery, he simply said it was up to me when I wanted it. Well i waited because it was not hurting really bad and covid hit, so I waited. A year went by and i got a new mri at his request and it showed the same thing as last time but the tear got a little bigger but he was not alarmed at all, same outcome as last time...it was up to me when I was having surgery. Ended up waiting almost another year and finally having surgery last month, when i bent at knees no matter how far i bent down when i went to stand back up it felt like a rubber band about to snap so it was time. Well during that time i waited to have surgery they found a schwanoma ( non cancerous tumor basically ) in the same leg right above the knee. I saw Dr. Nassif for that ( will write another 5 star for him ), so when i went to schedule my knee Dr. Dunphy asked if i wanted to to get the schwanoma out as well, that was a quick yes from me. When scheduling for my knee Dr. Dunphys' scheduler ( her name is Kim and she is beyond nice and returns phone calls when she says she is.... ) had to work with Dr. Nassif scheduler as well. They made it so easy to schedule basically 2 surgeries with 2 different surgeons at the same time. Their surgery center is really nice too ! Surgery was...so far a huge success !! I just started pt for it and the therapist was so stoked to see how far i have come 3 weeks out from surgery with no pt yet. I can bend at my knees and when i go to get up that rubber band feeling is gone. As far as Dr. Dunphy and how he is and bedside manner is awesome ! From the first time i saw him i liked him for a few reasons but one main one is...when you talk to him, he looks at you and listens....he is not writing or reading your chart or doing anything but looking at you and listening to you, that is huge for me. Unfortunately broke my elbow roller skating during the pandemic. Fortunately I found Dr Dunphy. He is the BEST orthopedic surgeon around! He was my second opinion for ORIF with plate and screws and after meeting with him and discussing the options, it was a no brainer to go with him! He is caring, thorough and extremely knowledgeable with great bedside manner. He called to personally check on me several times! If you plan on having this type of surgery be sure and do exactly as he says. Get the block! I didn't because I was scared and it was a huge mistake. Could not get behind my pain. Also, start physical therapy as soon as he gives you the orders. I waited a little bit and ended up with my arm stuck at a 45 degree angle. But with some PT work and time I was able to get it back to 100% in a few weeks! Im now seeing him for shoulder issues and will never go to another surgeon for my ortho issues!! read more

POW!~ At least that is how I felt when I was suddenly dealing with soreness to my surgery site from last year's Tibia Plateau Fracture on my right knee. After learning that my doctor was no longer a part of Newport Orthopedics Institute, I was redirected to a new doctor who would be taking over. From the moment I saw Dr. Dunphy in the Newport Office, he validated my concerns and made me feel taken care of. We discussed my options and I left his office with a plan. My knee was NOT improving so his office ordered me a CT scan STAT. His office got me in quickly so, we could review the results. The scan showed multiple pathways to the metal in my knee, which was very upsetting. With the infection not improving and these easy access ways for the infection to reach and attack my bone... there was only one option for me after 1 year and 2 months... GET THE METAL OUT and pray for no infection in my bone. Having all these dooming facts swirling around me, I felt scared and vulnerable. But my feelings of doubt and doom quickly faded when Dr. Dunphy explained my options calmly and confidently. Dr. Dunphy's last words resonated "We are doing the right thing here." And with no regret, I became his add on Saturday surgery! POW!~With Dr. Dunphy's skillful, precise techniques, great judgment, and informative planning, we are beating the infection! Avoid Dr. Dunphy! This guy is seeing up to 80 patients per day. Plan on spending an hour in the waiting room, then about an hour in the Dr. Room to see this guy, who will then spend about 5 minutes with you. He gave me a cortisone shot for my knee pain, and missed- gave me no relief. After doing PT for 10 weeks for a meniscus tear that he diagnosed as the source of my pain, nothing changed. On the follow up visit, after like 1 or 2 questions, he suggested surgery. I didn't really trust him, and felt like I was just a number, not a real patient, and that he was surgery happy, and did not care/ have the time to understand me as a patient, the nature and location of the injury, or my activity level as a multi sport athlete. I decided to get a second opinion, with another Dr. and got a completely different diagnosis in that my pain was an inflamed and overworked plica. After reviewing my MRI scans, the new doc moved my knee around, and quite simply asked where the pain was coming from. I told him, as I did Dunphy the pain was in the front medial portion of my knee. I then learned from the new doc that if the pain was from my meniscus, after him looking at my MRI, the pain would have been coming from the back of my knee. New Doc gave me a cortisone shot, and the pain was gone. Dunphy is seeing too many people, could care less about his patients, misdiagnosed me, gave me an ineffective cortisone shot. and wanted to do surgery on something that didn't need it. Avoid Dr. Dunphy! Over the years as an athlete, I've seen a number or Orthopaedic docs for various injuries, and have had a number of different surgeries. Dr. Dunphy was hands down the worst- he just doesn't care, wants to see as many patients as possible, and do as many surgeries as possible, misdiagnosed me, and couldn't land a cortisone shot. I broke my knee (patella). Dr. Dunphy agreed to see me right away. He immediately scheduled me for surgery. It was a complicated surgery since the patella had broken into three parts. Dr. Dunphy conveyed confidence that the surgery would be successful. It's now three weeks post surgery. I'm in physical therapy. I've seen Dr. Dunphy once (post-op) follow up X-rays and to be sure that everything is healing properly. He called me once to check up on me. I had a lovely mountain bike wreck and ended up shattering my clavicle at the beginning of the summer. I booked an appointment with Dr. Dunphy and was having surgery two days later. He was very efficient and the surgery was over within a couple hours. I ended up with a plate and eight pins. The facility was clean and every staff member that I came in contact with was very professional and friendly. The surgery was a success and his guidance afterwards made the recovery process go by fairly quick. I was back on the bike by the end of the summer and the scarring is minimal which is a bonus.
