Any time we need something hardware store-ish, we always go the Taylor's store on Independence Blvd first.

Store is run by very young people that don't know how, or aren't allowed to, make any real decisions beyond ringing you up. The manager is still in grade-school. Not a problem on its own, but you do need some life experience and tact to be a manager of a hardware store where most of you're customers know more than anyone the store. I blame the owners of the store, not the young people, but still... it sucks for customers that need any sort of help or problem solved. I went in for Stihl hearing protection and the box was ripped in several places and soaked in oil! The head set itself was just loose in the box with no packaging and not clean. Theres no way it was new and they knew it, yet refused to do anything or acknowledge the problem. They offered no discount, no alternative at a matched price, nothing. Not my first issue with this garbage business, just the latest and the reason I'm done giving them money. read more

This is the neighborhood go to spot for quick hardware and gardening pickups. They've rarely ever failed at what I needed "right that moment". Parking is close to the door. The handicap spot is a little hard to get in and out of. The store has placed outside merchandise displays a bit too close to the parking space. You can find house flag and banner poles and stands. Complementing them are colorful flags if you're not into football teams. (I am!!). There are grills, beach chairs and a variety of outdoor things. I continually come back for more and more organic potting soil. And I love the lightweight horizontal planters that sit on the deck rail. Mine are filled with herbs. The neatest thing about them are the drain holes, which keep the plants safe during our periodic monsoons. Gardening and lawn tools and paraphernalia are plentiful, as are garden, lawn and herb seeds. At the end of an aisle you'll even find yummy local jams and jelly. Did I tell you that they also have kitchen stuff? You can even get an EZPass. How about that for variety? Should you wish to return an item and be missing your receipt, their computer provides easy access to the purchase. It's especially easy if you participate in their Best Rewards program. What are the failings? The garden center is much smaller than its nearby awesome competitor. My plants and herbs are bought elsewhere. I have had problems with keys I've had made there. The employees aren't the friendliest people in town. A smile or two would add to the ambience. That said, it's wonderful when a locally owned business succeeds to this degree. One of the owner's wives taught my son in Middle School. We love continuity. And we love to buy local. read more

Hey...they may not be the big box Home Depot, or Lowes however a pretty good selection for a hardware/garden center. All I needed was to get lucky and find a snow shovel, I know laugh as you will if your reading this review in warmer times. I am serious when tell you as I am writing this review snow is accumulating and expected to reach 8-12 inches within 24 hours. The lot was almost empty when I parked the car around 8:30 AM. The area was clean and some items were displayed in the front of the store nicely. No debris around the door way as I saw customers exiting with eureka... snow shovels, pretty blue snow shovels. I have been to this location over a dozen, or so times and they usually have solid customer service. On this particular day with the madness of a storm on the horizon in Hampton Roads it was needless to say hectic. I still witnessed employees assisting with rock salt etc. I did not need assistance so all good. I ended up seeing almost every customer in the store with at least one and as much as three snow shovels. I was nervous because I was thinking that they would have run out. Whew! around 8 shovels were displayed in the front of the store and I grabbed one. I decided to look around the store a bit with nothing in mind to buy. The shelves were neat and organized well. You can get a lot of the things you would want from a big box, but in less selection and quantity. A paint area, tools, garden items and a sweet section of STIHL products and much more. The phone was ringing off the hook and no one was available to answer all the lines that were surely asking for snow shovels, snow blowers, scrapers and rock salt. About five minutes later I walked back up front to check out and every snow shovel on display had disappeared into customers hands waiting to check out. The older man who assisted me with the purchase was nice, but you could tell a bit frazzled with long line that had formed. What a bargain, $12.99 + tax for my shovel. If you can get a away with a mid size hardware store like Taylor's for your needs I would recommend. Prices are in line with the big boxes and if your looking for a quick in and out you can't beat them. read more

I will not return to that place and it saddens me a bit. I have used Stihl products for a while now and as a Stihl retailer, it kind of forces you into situations that most people try to avoid. I was charged for a repair that wasn't done, I was charged for parts (with a seperate charge for shop materials) and a $2.50 environmental impact fee (which I was told, was for the repairman picking up the product), although I was charged the fee for both my items even though they were picked up at the same time. A big box store wouldn't treat a customer like this, but the neigborhood, family hardware has no problem. Awesome. Good riddance Taylors. Buyers beware.. read more

If I could give them, zero stars, I would. Normally, I like to support local small hardware stores as it's difficult for them to compete with the big box stores, but this place takes the cake for the worst hardware store in the history of mankind. The people that work there are knowledgeable as they've been around forever, but their customer service is some of the worst I've ever seen. If they make a mistake, it's your fault. If you make a mistake, it's your fault, if no one makes a mistake, somehow, it's still your fault. I would not recommend buying anything from this place as they have higher prices than you'll find at Home Depot or Lowe's, worse customer service, and less merch selection. Not worth the time or effort to go walk through the aisles of this place. read more

Cold front moving in. 20+ degree drop in temps forecast. Rain with occasional thunderstorms, some of them possibly severe. Exactly. The perfect day to smoke a ham. Off to Taylor's Do-It Center to pick up the necessary smoking supplies. Hickory wood chips, a few bags of lump coal, and whatever else I could no longer survive without. Taylor's is the locals answer to the Big Box Home Improvement stores, I try to shop here whenever I can. The selection isn't quite as vast as the Big Boy's, but please make this local chain of stores your first stop when you are looking for hardware type stuff around the house. The people that work here are so friendly and helpful, they deserve our support (ok, my local rant is over). Now, if that plea wasn't enough to pull at your heartstrings, let me focus on another part of your anatomy.....your taste buds (what were you expecting me to say???). If you have spent more than 10 minutes in HRVA, you know the name Pierce's Barbecue. Taylor's sells their barbecue sauce by the bottle, both Original and Honey! There was only one other place I found that carried this and they stopped sometime last summer. Now I've got a new local supplier! Much joy and rejoicing!! In addition, they have other uniquely named hot sauces in the same section. Taylor's offers a few discounts as well, some of them only on specific days, but I know that if you are in the military, retired from the military, or old, it is worth a certain percentage off your bill. Not sure if there are double bonus points for old retired from the military, but I'm sure that these guys will work with you. I can't image price ever being the reason that someone would not buy from here. Depending on where you are coming from, getting into this store can be a pain if you are coming up Independence from the south. Do yourself a favor and take a left at the light at Independence and Haygood and wind your way through the McDonald's parking lot, especially between 3PM and 6PM Monday through Friday when traffic leaving Little Creek NAB/Joint Forces, Little Creek Branch/WhateverItsNameIsThisWeek turns southbound Independence into a parking lot. read more

Went here this morning because I had a metal house number plate from which I couldn't get a rusted screw out. Nothing worked including WD-40. I went to hardware store looking for a device to remove it. Happened to be waited on by the manager, Richard Styles. Before I left, he had removed the screw and searched diligently for just the right new screws to replace the rusted ones. The total purchase amounted to 42 cents. You would have thought I was buying a couple hundred dollar item the way he decated himself to help me with the problem. That my friends, is what customer service is all about. His is one of two hardware stores equal distances from my house. Guess which one I'll be going to from now on for all my purchases? read more

We came here seeking advice for our yard. The man who spoke to us was very rude. When we asked him if we should use a specific product to revive our grass he told us "you tell me!". We left there with the same questions we had. He made me feel uncomfortable and uneasy. When we left we weren't told thank you for coming instead we got glares from the workers. I honestly feel because we are a young interracial couple we weren't treated with the same customer service others were given. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place. It's nice to be able to just run in, pick up what I want and exit quickly. If I have a question about paint or yard work there is always someone to ask and if they don't know the answer, they find someone else who does. This is a neighborhood hardware store, some of the staff have been there forever. Prices of some items are a little higher than Lowes or H.D. but they are warehouse stores. Advertised and unadvertised sales are very good. Military discount. Try the popcorn. read more

I would love to support this local neighborhood store, but, as others have said here, this store is filled with unfriendly staff and over-priced stock. It is very close to my house but I have never had a single store associate say Hi to me or thank me for coming in. Meanwhile, at the big box, Home Depot, a few miles away, every one is friendly and helpful. read more

I'd have to agree with the comments here that this store has somewhat unfriendly staff. It's a nice stop for us when we're in the area as we like the smallness of the store and selections. However, no store associate seems glad we're there, offers much help, and with a recent purchased product problem, we were greeted with ill manners and lack of caring. So, when an overall experience leaves a yuck feeling, we're thinking Home Depot--only a few miles away--friendly and helpful. read more

Last year I decided that I wanted to go the environmentally friendly route with my tiny yard and buy a steel reel mower instead of a nasty gas powered one. I went to this store and bought one no problem. Cut to the start of we this year. I went in to get a blade lapping kit, a maintenance tool this mower NEEDS to stay functional for its lifetime. This store notnonly did not have it, it does not even carry it at all. I could not special order it from them. They could not even give me a solid lead in where I COULD find this necessary piece of equipment. So they carry an implement but do not carry the basic things needed to keep it in top performing condition. Some dedication to customer needs guys. This does not even make sense. On top of that, when I asked for the sharpening materials needed to sharpen the blade by hand to get by until I found a kit online, someone gave me honing solution, not honing oil. Yeah, in case you do not know, they are not the same thing. Adding to the inability to carry the only proper sharpening kit for this mower, the employees also do not know how to even help you figure out a different route. Of all the hardware stores I have patronized, this is the least qualified. read more
