We went shopping at the Carlsbad Outlets and stopped by Tea Monks to replenish our thirst. This was the first time I've seen matcha flavored crystal boba, so of course I had to try it! I ended up getting the matcha milk tea, and it was a perfect pairing with the matcha crystal boba. This drink was really good and you can taste the strong matcha flavor in the drink and the boba. I got 50% sweet, which was just right! The taro milk tea with grass jelly is really good too. This drink is typically on the sweeter side, so the grass jelly kinda helps balance the sweetness. I would recommend getting 50% sweet, unless you prefer your drinks on the sweeter side. My partner in crime Teddy gives it 4 stars, and if Carlsbad weren't too far, we would come here more often! read more

Great location for a boba spot - just grab a drink and shop! Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and noticed there was a crowd in front of Tea Monks so I assumed it had to be good. I ordered the Zen Thai Tea with boba.. however they were out of boba.. and also more than half of their other toppings so I ended up selecting coffee jelly instead. It took about 10 mins for the drink to be made, so not too much of a wait. Not too sure what the difference is between the Zen Thai Tea vs a regular Thai Tea but the Yelp images definitely influenced me to try the Zen. The Thai Tea was way more milky and creamy than tea flavored. The coffee jelly was okay, really preferred boba though. Overall, the drink was just okay. Was shopping in the area and thirsty for a drink so I decided to give this place a try. It is located inside the Carlsbad Outlets right next to Starbucks and Wetzel's Pretzels. They have happy hour Monday-Friday from 10 AM - 2PM where drinks are 15% off. Ordered the Mango Moon Fruit Smoothie thinking it would be like a Mango Smoothie, but didn't taste any mango. It came out to be a purplish color. I think it was mixed with dragon fruit maybe and it tasted mostly like bananas, no mango taste. Although it is advertised as a fruit smoothie, the consistency was watery like juice. Maybe I just chose the wrong drink. The staff were nice. The menu says you can change the sweetness level either to 100% sugar, 50% sugar, or 0% sugar, but if you ask you can also do 75% sugar if the jump from 100 to 50 is too much. The smallest size they have for drinks is 24 oz, but I wish they had a smaller size. The quality was not what I'm used to and it was not the best drink I've had, but the staff were nice. read more

This cute little place had a wide variety of options on their menu. The sizing between the regular and large is a BIG difference. I wish they offered a kids size or even just a small. I was at the outlet and wanted some bubble tea and saw Tea Monks. I quickly did a Yelp search and noticed they only had a 3.5 star rating so I was hesitant to try it at first but didn't want to make a few miles drive to another boba shop. After glancing thru the menu I was debating between either the Tiger Milk Tea or the Zen Thai Milk Tea. I went with the latter, per the cashier's recommendation... but it could very well be one of the worst Thai teas I've ever had. It was so bland and didn't even taste like Thai tea. Sorry to say but I think I can make better Thai tea than this and I've never even made it before. I basically paid $7 for a cup of water HA. Today I saw they offered coffee. They had the typical froo froo explaining where the coffee beans were sourced. It was also fairly expensive. I purchased an 8 oz Cappuccino for nearly $5. The person making the Cappuccino was taking a while. She was reading notes, and the person behind me got their order first. She cleaned all the gear. Measured the exact amount using a scale. Looked like she was having trouble with the steamer. Then she was done and delivered the product in a small cup. Much smaller than one typically expects when buying coffee. I would say it was about the same amount one would get from a standard mug. ... It was the best Cappuccino I have ever had. I let it cool for 15 minutes. The froth was velvety. It had a nutty smell. Even though it was only steamed milk and espresso, it had a sweetness. The end note was chocolatey. I know how difficult it is to brew lighter roasts, and they did a perfect job extracting the flavor. Maybe I got lucky due to the circumstances, the timing, and getting it at just the right maturity of the beans. But they did a perfect execution. It was a good end to the week. read more
