I needed cornrows in a pinch and since my regular salon books up fast I needed a place that could do it with somewhat short (2 weeks) notice. This place had decent ratings on Yelp and I wasn't asking for anything complicated so I thought why not. Hmm, I would not recommend this place at all. I'll start off with the pros. My appointment was with Porsha at 10:30a. I was about 20 minutes early and she had someone in her chair so she passed me on to her assistant who did a perfectly acceptable job (or so I thought at first glance) and got me in and out. I was back home in DC by 11:30a Cons, the staff are unfriendly as hell and are more concerned with talking to each other and making evening plans than they are about speaking with their customers and trying to understand their needs/wants. I seriously stopped going to salons at one point because of this until I found my current salon. I can't deal with hostility of any kind when I'm spending money. When I first walked in an older woman (Ula?) was at the front desk and she oddly greeted me (acted like the phrase 'good morning' was foreign to her) and asked me to have a seat and wait. At no point was I ever introduced to Porsha nor did she introduce herself. I even asked at one point if SHE was Porsha and this chick just huffed at me and carried on with her conversation with another stylist, as if to suggest that I should know who she is. Mind you this was my first time at this salon. Sigh. I only figured out her name through other stylists speaking to her and calling out her name across the floor. My request was super simple and she seemed to be doing something more complicated ( a full sew-in weave install) so as I mentioned before she passed me on to her assistant (don't know her name either, she never greeted or introduced herself to me). I had to ask the assistant if I should sit in the chair because no one would speak to me directly. As Porsha argued back and forth with the woman at the front desk and ordered her assistant to take my appointment, since she was apparently too busy or just didn't want to to do it, I seriously thought about interjecting and asking to just cancel the appointment. The back and forth seemed stressful and it wasn't that serious but I was already there, it was raining outside, I wanted my braids, and I wanted to give the place a chance. I have natural hair and they seemed to not know what to do with it. The assistant used a fine tooth comb (!!!) to comb my hair, after she blow dried it straight, with no protectant or moisturizer. While braiding my hair, all the while she never so much as said a word to me other than to ask, at the very end, why my hair was so 'short' ... Um because I have natural kinky hair and shrinkage is real. She was hummin' quite a tune though for the 40 minutes it took her to braid my 'short' hair (verrrrry slow braider) and by the fervor that she hummed her tune it was quite the jam. If only she could be that interested in her client. I kept my eyes closed the entire time I was in the chair and tried to go to my happy place reminding myself that this was a one time deal and I made it y'all. I made it. As I was trying to pay with Ula she was asking me where I normally get my hair done and tried to sell me some hair. No thanks. The quality of the hair honestly didn't look up to par. Wefts looked very bulky but better than what you'd find at beauty salon stores I guess. When I got home and could see the work done up close it was a fright. The lines were not clean at all and despite just having my hair braided the mess looked rough, like weeks old. Sigh. Thankfully it was only $35. I had washed, detangled, and lightly moisturized my hair before I arrived at the salon (basically did half of the work for them) and I'm glad that I did because not a single product was used during my appointment. I made sure to oil my scalp as soon as I got home. People always ask why I go 30-40 minutes away from home to get my hair done. This is why. A good friendly knowledgeable stylist is hard to find. No matter what it costs just give them the money. It's not worth putting up with this mess, smh. read more

I visited Tease for the first time back in 2015 at a friend's recommendation when I wanted to experiment with fake hair for the very first time. The vibe in the salon is very friendly, open, and communal -- and it's super clean. Ula, the shop owner, is very attentive and sweet. Since then, I've been back a few times and always have a great experience! I've had three different, let's call them "hair experiences", at Tease. First experience! Crochet braids with curly Freetress hair: This was my very first experience getting fake hair. Kia was very helpful and provided a lot of information before my appointment. She gave me tips on which hair to buy and how much to purchase. The visit to get the hair installed was great! Kia is so friendly and easy to talk to, and she'll adapt to your needs. I don't put any heat in my hair, and Kia was totally open to not blow drying my hair straight. Also, at my request, she didn't make the cornrows too tight (due to migraines), which I appreciated. The crochet itself only took a couple hours, so I was in and out in about 3 hours. Kia was also totally open to providing help after I left the salon, which was great since it was my first time and I had a ton of questions and anxieties about it. I LOVED the results and wore it on vacation! It was perfect and I highly recommend Kia for this style. Second experience! The weave: I decided to try out a weave, because why not? This time I worked with Jen. She helped me pick out the right hair and length, and was totally open to discussing prep and maintenance with me. My time at the salon only took about 4 hours with wash, dry, and installation. Jen is super fun and easy to talk to, so the hours flew by pretty fast. I told her I didn't want anything too Beyonce fabulous -- that I wanted something that looked like my natural hair (if it were straight and longer). Again, I LOVED the results! She listened to everything I wanted and the execution was perfect. I couldn't believe it wasn't my hair! I would definitely recommend Jen for this style. She helped me out after the installation when I needed help with maintenance, which I appreciated. Third experience! More crochet braids, but with Senegalese twist: I wanted braids, but without the 8-hour installation, so I went back to Kia! She whipped these twists out in 3 hours -- including wash and dry! I was amazed at how quick it went. Again, she made sure my cornrows weren't too tight. The result was amazing and I would 100% do them again! Those are my 3 experiences so far with Kia and Jen. I 100% recommend visiting them for your weave and crochet braid needs. They're talented, fun, and great to talk to. AND they help you when you leave and suck at maintenance (like myself). So my birthday was coming up and I still had no idea what I was going to do with my hair! I just moved back to the DMV and was tempted to go back to my previous salon but after reading their recent reviews I decide to find somewhere new. Someone in those comments referred Tease Salon so I decided to check them out. I'm really thankful that I didn't go to my old salon because that is how I found this lovely salon! My experience at Tease was absolutely amazing! I called and spoke to the owner, Ula, and she set my appointment for the same day with Esther. They sell hair in the salon too so I figured I'd save time and take a chance on trying their hair, making my visit a completely new experience. Ula was very knowledgeable about the hair she sells and she had such a variety to choose from. I ended up getting 18", 20", & 22" bundles of a loose wave variety and the price was VERY reasonable, in my opinion. The hair smelled great, looked great, and felt great so I was ready to get it installed! Esther washed, blow dried, and trimmed my natural hair before she started the install. She listened to exactly what I said I wanted. She asked me how tight I wanted it and I let her know not to do it very tight, especially near my edges, and she made sure to do exactly what I asked. Esther did such an AMAZING job! I honestly couldn't have asked for anything better. I walked out of there with a beautifully laid sew-in! It was my first time visiting Tease. I had a 9:30 appointment with a stylist named Porsha. This girl is a joke and should not be allowed to touch anyone's hair. She showed up 30 minutes late and didn't apologize until I complained about it. I was scheduled to get extensions and showed her a few pictures of how I wanted my hair styled. I mentioned that I was thinking about getting a closure. She said they sold closures there and could find one that would match the hair I had. Even though it was $96 and a little out of my budget, I decided to go for it. After installing the extensions with closure, I turned to look in the mirror and could NOT believe my eyes. She gave me some ridiculous looking style that did not remotely resemble what I asked for and worse, the closure did not match the rest of the hair. Yes, I did look at the closure before she installed it, but after putting so much unnecessary product in my hair then using a rod iron on top of that, it looked a mess. When I got home, I took a closer look and got more pissed. I called that night, spoke to the owner who told me to come back the next morning and they would fix it. The last thing I wanted to do was drive another 30 minutes to Tease, but I knew I had to get this resolved. Got there and Porsha was waiting for me. She said she was sorry I didn't like it, but would try to make sure I was happy. Bottom line, she took out the closure, replaced it with leftover hair I had and sent me on my way. It looked mediocre at best. There was a gap in the back with tracks showing. I just covered it up and got the hell out of there. Fast forward 4 weeks later. I went to have it taken out by someone who has been doing hair for 15 years. I watched her meticulously take each piece out. When she finished I noticed the hair on top (where the closure was), is now significantly shorter than the rest of my hair. The only other person who had access to my hair was Porsha. She must have cut my hair when she took out the closure, I'm guessing because she was pissed and now it is almost two inches shorter than the rest. I don't know what kind of recourse I have, but I STRONGLY RECOMMEND STAYING FAR AWAY FROM THIS GIRL. SHE IS AN IDIOT AND AN AMATEUR!! I'm so disgusted... read more

I recently got my hair done at Tease to much disappointment. Sew-in and color and spent 8 hours, yes 8 hours in the salon. I bought hair from there which was fine but once I got in the chair it was all downhill. My weave install was 165 plus 65 for the color not to mention the hair cost. After the stylist taking numerous clients in between and making me wait hours upon hours past the projected time it was a horrible experience. Do NOT get your hair colored here. I asked for brown highlights and came home with two red damaged streaks in the front of my hair and that's after the stylist "correcting". I'm going to brag about my hair first, THEN I'm going to talk about Tease, the salon. First: My hair is the mane attraction at work. Everyone in my office is touching with my hair right now. "It's so shiny!" "It's so healthy!" "What did you do to it?" It's a Brazilian Blowout, which usually runs around $350-$550--NOT including the mandatory sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Anyone can do a Brazilian Blowout--it's not a hard procedure. However, TEASE STANDS APART FROM THE REST because they only charge $150 for the first one. Do NOT go anywhere else. DO NOT PAY half a grand for a Brazilian Blowout! This place has you covered for only $150. It's a promotion they're doing but you need to snatch it up FAST. Okay, I was skeptical. I wondered why they would charge so low for something that I know averages $350+. The answer? They want to get new customers in the door. It's $150 for the first time, and probably goes up later. Kinda like cocaine, except the first time isn't free and you don't have to hit the dealer up so frequently (the blowout lasts every three months) I was okay with that because I really wanted to try it and didn't want to spend half a grand to experiment w/ my hair. I wouldn't pay half a grand to experiment with Angelina Jolie. Okay, I totally would. Anyway, my experience is this: I came in and waited for a while for my appointment. By a while, I mean an entire muthafuggin hour! I was pissed and my hands hurt from over-tweeting my complaints about the wait. They later apologized profusely and told me that they won't be booking Brazilian Blowouts on the weekend because they are always SUPER busy on weekends (a good sign of a good salon). That said, thanks to me, you're probably going to have to come in on a week day (I blew it for you, pun intended). Anyway, after an hour wait, I sat down and Nanci did the treatment. The owner herself came up to me and explained the whole process while I was getting the chemicals put in my hair. I was in for three and a half hours (typical of this treatment, I've read). I emerged with a completely different head of hair. I came in damaged, dry, frizzy and semi-wavy and emerged healthier than before, it is not frizzy AT ALL. Two days later, my hair is still fantastically straight and frizz free. Seriously. Miracle of miracles. The only way my hair could have experienced a more miraculous transformation is if you could see Jesus in the strands. They are really good at what they do and Nanci treated me well. My hair is so straight, it could go into a gay bar, get hit on by a thousand women, and still come out straight. I'll have it like this for 3 months and with a thicker wallet thanks to Tease. The best thing about this salon is the location. The prices are ridiculous and they don't stay open late. I told was a relaxer was $80 and then as soon as I get in the chair, the stylist says the relaxer is $80 and a trim will be an additional $20, making it $100. $100 for a relaxer, WTF? That was the last time I will ever go there. To make matters worse, they didn't grease my scalp causing my scalp to be extra dry not even a week later. All in all, this salon blows. I'll start with the good. The hair they sell is awesome. Great quality, and reusable for a long time. And for as expensive as hair is, their prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is professional, and they use yummy quality products. And they may squeeze you in last minute. Also, the shop is gorgeous. Any girl looking for a sew in for a reasonable price in DC will know how seldom a professional, clean and serene environment can be found. For black hair services of that level you usually have to pay exorbitant prices. Now saying all that, getting a full weave still ain't cheap. And though Tease salon has so much going for it, if you wanna get a full weave, maybe reconsider. I've gotten questionable weaves from this place, twice. Which is obviously a little silly on my part, but I'd like to explain a little. Both times I had a different hairdresser (so I thought, maybe it'll be different), and each time I came back (I went back a third time just to have the monstrosity taken out) the hairdresser that had assisted me had already been fired. One of Tease's own workers came to take out my weave and was like: "what the hell happened to your head?" before I could even tell her that it had been done at Tease. Which is awkward for everyone involved. This same person tells me that the woman who did my hair messed up a few other clients. My main point is this. For as expensive as it is to get this done, it would be awesome if tease could more thoroughly vet their hairdressers. Hair dressing is a skill, and so the hairdressers should be educated accordingly. It's a bummer to spend a ton of money for sub-par work. Yes, everyone has to learn, but not on paying heads. I can't speak for any other services but the weaves, as I've watched other hair services get done (blow out etc.) with beautiful results. But the spotty work in the weaving area really lowers the class of this chic little shop. read more

Fiona got me in and out in less than 2 hours... on a Saturday *gasp*, I know rare. I have thick, longish, natural hair and Fiona knew exactly what to do. When she was finished, my hair looked super healthy and silky. She took her time and was careful to not use excessive heat or force. I have experienced different salons and stylist in the area for 14 years. I had one that I really loved and unfortunately they aren't doing hair any more. I was away from the area for 3 years. Just back in forth enough to get my hair done quickly. Sometimes with last minute appointments. In August, I called Tease for a last minute appointment and they accommodated me. Although they are a little pricy, the way my hair felt when I left the salon was well worth it. I am back in the DC area for good and went to the salon to make sure I got the same results and felt the same way I did the first time. (Sometimes salons do your hair best when you are a first time client) Both times, my hair came out soft (I have really dry hair and some stylist don't take the time to understand your hair) The way the owner and stylist talk about hair, you can tell they are passionate about healthy, quality hair and styles. Awa is a thorough professional who loves her craft, understands the customer, and essentially saved my life when she made arrangements in her busy schedule to braid my hair. I found Awa on Instagram and was impressed by her skill level, even evident in photos. My braids were completed quickly and I was able to go in to work for the day. Neat parts, equal sized braids, a great length....I was highly satisfied. I received so many compliments that I was disappointed I forgot to get any business cards from her. Instead I posted her praises on social media...and of course, here on Yelp. The salon is very clean and has a nice set-up with an easy location. There is also parking available. I brought my own hair for braiding. I needed an extra pack and Awa was able to sell me an extra pack of hair so I did not have to leave the shop. I also noticed the shop sells hair for weave extensions. The salon truly has everything. I would highly recommend Awa. She was an absolute gem to find! read more

I have been here on two occasions- once to get a full sew in by Jen, and the other to have a wig made by Esther. Both experiences were great! One complaint is that Jen did not flatten my closure well enough to make it look natural, so I needed to go home and flatten it further. But she did a great job with the braiding underneath and the sew in itself! And the wig that Esther made using the hair that I bought at the salon was so amazing! I was so pleasantly surprised! And she also installed and styled the wig when I picked it up! I will definitely be back to have another wig made by Esther. She delivered exactly what I asked for!!! It was a wig that looked just like a full sew in! Very happy with the results! Other points to note: Jen does not braid too tight for the pattern under the sew in, but Esther does. For more than 2 years, I drove past Tease Hair Salon en route from my home in Takoma Park to the Beltway, so I could spend nearly two hours in the car getting to Rockville and back, three in the chair, and $200-plus to have my hair shampooed, conditioned, and roller set. For color touchups, I had to add another $100. From the window, I thought Tease clients were all 30-year-old gals looking for extensions, but I was wrong. I'm a 60-something newlywed, and Nanci helps me keep my past-shoulder-length hair looking fabulous. She's pleasant, knowledgeable and attentive; and she gets me in and out wasting my time or my money. Best of all, my husband loves what Tease does for me and my hair. I'm a satisfied customer and highly recommend the salon. Why only four stars? 1) The shampoo chairs could be upgraded with a footrest and a back that comes up; 2) Some of the stylists (not Nanci) chat with each other while working on customers. The owner says this was fixed, but it looks like the issue has returned. I clicked on the link from google and it led me to a strange website. I quickly exited out. Same thing happened the second time. The third time I clicked it, it finally linked me to the website, although I'm now too wary to continue use of the website. I got a really bad weave installed here. So bad I had to wake up the next morning and take it down since I was going out of town that day. When I called the salon to let them know I was displeased with out it came out, the manager yelled at me! "How are we supposed to help if you took the weave out?" I guess she expected me to walk around looking crazy, but that's something I won't do. Really bad customer service on her part. Didn't even offer a tangible solution, I wasn't asking for a full refund but I would have appreciated some type of reparations. Won't be going back and don't recommend others to go either. read more

I must say I tried this salon back in September and the stylists who was there (Kia or something) did a great job on my hair I was really impressed. I decided to go back in January to have my extensions taken out, hair relaxed, and 3 tracks put in. I asked for someone who could cut well and was referred to a stylists who I was told was "percision cutter". Due to this experience I will never return. The relaxer went well, the 3 tracks that were installed were done unevenly which I didn't realize until I left. As for the "percision cutter" I showed her a pic of an asymetical bob. Not to hard right, she had no idea how to cut, I came out with just a plain bob. When I pointed out in the picture that the back is higher and then the sides come down longer she still couldn't make this happen. I was so annoyed by that point I just told her to stop because it was obvious she didn't know what she was doing. The behavior in the salon is borderline unprofessional as well. Some of the conversations that go on between the stylists is ridiculous. If I had one wish for this salon it would be for them to get a spot on Tabatha's Salon Makeover, because they need help. read more

The location and friendly staff are its best features. I paid $70 for my curls to flop and my hair to look greasy less than 4 hours later. The prices are a la carte - a different price for the wash, a different price for the conditioner, a different price for the curls. Before we got started, I did tell the owner what I wanted and asked how much - she told me $45 for a press & curl (I have natural hair). Apparently, charging extra for the 'deep conditioner' is a DC thing - so I knew better and politely declined. Then the stylist asked if I wanted curls? Well, of course I did - I love BIG hair and told her so. Well apparently that was an additional fee that no one mentioned until it was time to check out. The stylist kept looking at the price list like she was not familiar and then gave me the bill for $70 bucks. What really made me give a low 2 stars - my curls fell and my hair was bone straight by 5pm (I had a 10am appt). I didn't do anything to sweat it out or sleep on it or anything like that. They just fell. And ladies let me tell you - my hair holds curls VERY well. I did try to fix it at home - no luck. The curls would not hold, period. Later that night my date asked me why my hair was so 'oily' (he was being nice). After that I was through! They won't get my repeat business. read more

After doing some research I found Tease and called and made an appointment for the same day. They fit me right in even though I was coming from an hour away. I am in the process of transitioning from relaxed to natural and wanted to add some highlights to my hair for a little excitement. I went there last week for a trim and style. The salon was very accommodating to me as I had to change my reservation twice that day. Pro: after a week my hair is still very full and bouncy, which I love, love, love! Cons: my stylist, Beatrice, would stop and talk with the other ones which was a little frustrating to me as I was running late, and I told her so. Other con, the styling was a mess: my hair definitely did not look like it'd been pressed, and there was no styling whatsoever. I had to go home and do some major fixing. I have been going to Tease going on four years now. I have to give all the credit to my boyfriend. He hated the previous salon I was going to. He never liked the hairstyles he got online and found Tease. I love that he found this shop. It is truly a great place to get your hair done. The stylist and cliental are very diversified. I love the fact that the shop is always so clean and bright and the ladies there are so beautiful, funny, and good at what they do "HAIR". Tease has ladies of all different ages that get their hair done. They also have a male-based clientele for upkeep on dreads. Ula, the shop owner is very stylish and trendy. I love Kea, and Jen, and all the beautiful ladies in the shop. Kea is my stylist. I love the fact that I can trust her to do my hair without even showing or telling her a style. Kea can look at me and tell me she thinks this style would be good for me and I completely trust her and she has never let me down. The shop is amazing, and it's a one-stop shop simply fabulous. Kia is an amazing hair stylist. I have been going to her for a few years now and she always comes through. Whether it's for a last minute appointment or a special birthday dinner, my hair always comes out amazing. I usually get a shampoo and blow out on my natural hair. Awesome Experience! I have drove pass this salon many times but since it was my birthday weekend I wanted to try this salon out. Words can't even describe my experience. First let me say WOW!!!!!!! I requested to get some weave in my hair. I was referred to Jen and she was awesome. I have never had no one like her to do my hair like she did. She is very skilled at what she does...I was so excited afterwards and I receive many compliments on my hair. The wait was not long, she gave my hair the definite attention it needed. I recently stopped in to Tease Salon to buy hair. From the beginning I found the whole experience satisfying and accommodating. Ula (the owner) was amazing and sold me gorgeous hair that was easy to color since I like to dye my weave. After having such a great experience with purchasing hair I thought I might as well have them put it in (I was looking for a new stylist anyways and was very trepidations). I first saw Jen as she was working and had a good feeling she could help me to achieve the look I wanted. Two weeks later I booked an appointment with Jen who was amazing and truly cares about the quality of her work and she knew exactly the look that I wanted. To Adele A. First, it was the hair you ordered of the Internet. You even told me you normally called the lady you ordered the hair from complaining and she sends you more hair for free. Sorry, if a free hair service is what you were after, that won't work on me. Secondly, when you call back, you said you wanted your hair straighten and I curled it. You're surrounded by mirrors. You could easily see if I was giving you something you didn't want and asked for. Third, you had 24-26 inches hair. Ninety (90) dollars for a shampoo, colored and styled is not nearly enough if you ask me. I assumed you agreed with me, and that's why you give me nice tips on the two occasions that you came in. Fourth, if close to two hours under the dryer don't dry your hair, then I don't know what will. P.S. next time if you want pointers on how to maintain your hair at home, ask your stylist.
