This place was quite the surprise. Their menu is huge and I feel like they really have something for everyone. They bring salsa and chips (thank god) and the queso is GOOOOOOODDD. The mojitos were grand. Well actually in a smallish glass but only 4.99 for a limited time. They came in 4 flavors and tasted great! The taco salad was average. Same as you get at good restaurants. The chimichanga with Al Pastor meat was good! The pastor wasn't as bright a flavor with the red sauce taking the lead. It was smothered with cheese which made it less crispy. But there was still a crunch. I asked for their extra hot sauce They gave me the green which was green tomato with no heat. They red sauce packs a wallop! We have been coming to Tecate off and on over the years. We have always enjoyed their food and atmosphere. But don't often find ourselves on this side of town craving Mexican. But we always know it will be solid when we go. Let's start with the atmosphere. One of the larger, open seating areas I know of in the city. The buzz of people enjoying their food and beverages can be felt. I love the papel picados hanging all over the restaurant. And I have no idea how they keep their real plants alive all throughout a restaurant with no windows. The service is usually pretty good. Our last experience was not as good as previous times. But nothing too bad. The food is pretty standard Americanized Mexican food. The chips are fine, the margaritas are fine and the food is pretty tasty. Overall, nothing really stands out to me about this place. But the consistency, atmosphere and good service land them on a solid 4 stars. read more

Well me and my girlfriends are always down for cheese dip and some margs and really you can't go wrong with that. I was pretty reluctant to go here since I have a favorite place right down the road but when a new friend joins the dinner club you try to meet them halfway... anyways. It's my second time here and I figured it out!! They have a happy hour that starts at 2pm and I cannot make this more clear: there are $5 margs with fresh squeezed lime juice!!!! Run do not walk. I have only tried one entree so far but it's a keeper. The pollo loco is a plate of rice layered with grilled or shredded chicken and white cheese dip on top. I'm drooling just thinking about it! I will say was disappointed by the plate size for the price the second time going... I am hoping the will go up the plate size I was served on the first time so maybe they will see this and help a friend out! Regardless, I will be back for those fresh lime margs. read more

I liked this restaurant. I went for lunch #6 on the lunch menu is a. Chilli Relleno, a beef taco, guacamole salad and refried beans for $6.75. It was so much food it came out on two plates. It was also low in carbs, so you, can eat the chips and dip. The food was great and filled me up. If I had eaten chips and salsa I would have saved some to take home. Located between Newks and Pet Supermarket, Tecate is at the end of a strip mall shopping center in Vestavia right off Montgomery Hwy. It's almost walking distance to the brand new ChicFilet. We arrived on a Sunday for lunch. We were seated immediately. They have a very comfortable and clean restaurant with traditional Latin decorations, booths, tables and a large full service bar at the back. I'm kinda picky about my chips and salsa so I have to say that I wasn't a fan of their chips. They were too thick and even tasted a little stale. Their salsa was better. It had fresh cilantro in it which is a big plus. I heard they also have good Happy Hour specials on evite? Tammy got the Huevos Mexicana where her eggs are scrambled. I got the Huevos Rancheros where my 2 eggs were cooked over easy. They both come with refried beans, rice and 3 fresh warm tortillas wrapped in aluminum foil. The cook on my eggs was good but a little over-done. There was nothing unremarkable about their beans and rice, but everyone ate finished their entrees. Sarah enjoyed her cheese quesadilla and Rachel ate her chicken quesadilla. Interestingly our food didn't come flying out of the kitchen so maybe the cooks were taking a break?!? If there was a 3 and a half stars option, that's what I would have picked. The staff is very friendly and our server was attentive. My favorite Mex restaurant so far. The service just makes the visits immaculate in my experience. They really do get to know their customers (our server after serving us for the first time-- knew what we liked and took that into account on visits after that first time.) He knew we loved our margaritas with sugar instead of salt. The salsa is solid. It's fresh, not watered down and perfectly herby. The wings are delish as well. Looking for someplace new I spotted these guys as I was driving by....maybe I should look at my bookmarked locations a little more frequently since they have been marked there for some time. Lunchtime on Sunday and they were about half full when I go there. Quickly seated and drink order placed. Warm chips and pretty flavorful fresh salsa (not exceptionally spicy) were brought to the table. Good selection of standard Mexican entrees with really good prices. I went for the Steak Fajita Salad for $6.75. I was surprised when it was delivered and was in a tortilla shell bowl. The fajita steak was flavored to perfection and had just the right amount of grilled veggies (bell peppers and onion) mixed in with the steak. What I liked best is it wasn't a small portion of fajita on a huge bed of greens....very well proportioned. Price was great, service was exceptional and food was superb. Had a friend invite me here on a Saturday night, he goes regularly. After looking at the reviews I figured I should leave one. First this isn't a top tier Mexican place. It's a good ole neighborhood spot in a shopping center. And should be considered as such when judging. The atmosphere is great has a lot of kids and is open. The happy hour prices are good for the adults. I had a steak fajita taco salad and it was quite nice. It met my expectations well. My daughter had two beef tacos and see enjoyed them along with the chips and cheese. I would come here again. I enjoy eating Mexican food at restaurants like this. There tends to be consistency between each place, from the free chips and salsa to the quick service from time of ordering to delivery of food. I haven't encountered much discrepancy in price or taste, so I know what to expect when I order. Since the main difference between most dishes are how the combos of meat, cheese and carbs are assembled, you have general idea of how they will taste. Lunchtime is definitely the time to go if you want to save a little money while enjoying this comfort food. I'm a big fan of the fajitas (some assembly required), but I also enjoy the quesadillas and enchiladas, or pretty much anything. Tecate has a welcoming atmosphere and is a popular after church lunch spot on Sundays. Service is always excellent, even in large groups of 12 or more. What makes it only 3 stars in my eyes is that it is just like every other Mexican restaurant with nothing that distinguishes it from the competition (the strength also happens to be the weakness). The taste is good, but I feel it could use a little more spiciness. I wish they had a lunch option for the Fajitas Tecate. Overall, I enjoy hanging out and going with friends to this place, but it is not a unique place that I feel I need to take visitors to town. read more

I spent the good first half of my meal dazed by the color of the place. Phew. That being said, I would gladly come back here every week for the fajitas (steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, peppers, onions AND a cactus salad)... but I'd bring a couple friends with me to finish them. I'm not disillusioned about what I'm typically going to get when I go into most mexican joints. Most of the time the menu looks almost identical from place to place. I'm looking for a good salsa and an equally delicious margarita. This place has both of those. Even better, they're margaritas are $2.99 every day during happy hour! They also bring out complimentary bean dip that I really enjoy. The servers are always very nice and really fast and they can easily accommodate a big group. Whenever I've been in, it always seems like there's a group of ten or more eating together. This doesn't mean a table of two can't enjoy their meal. My favorite Mexican restaurant by far. The staff is so friendly and always on it and do whatever they can to make you feel welcome. Food is delicious and always comes out quickly. My advice is try something new every time you go. My favorite is the #51 special: pechuga a la parilla (marinated grilled chicken with spicy sauce and rice and beans) but they have the best pork chops and chile relleno, also. The ambiance is very well crafted, if you notice walls have some nice tile framed mirrors and works of art, traditional mexican decor. The service was excellent. Yes, we know, it's "standard" Mexican fare, but there's something to say for the usual comfort food. We eat here at least once every week or two, and have rarely been disappointed. The food quality and service is always consistently good. The free bean and cheese dip along with the salsa and chips is an appreciated gesture. Their guacamole is excellent, and I find many vegetarian options here. When you finish eating go play with the cats available for adoption around the corner at Pet Smart.
