Establishment: The establishment itself is very clean, neat, and tidy. Staff: My first visit here as a patient myself wasn't bad, but this time, my mom was the patient and our experience was horrible! The staff here are very incredibly rude, unprofessional, and dismissive. If I could give this place zero stars, I absolutely would. Let's begin by discussing the receptionist. When my mom and I entered the office, we weren't greeted. The person answering the phone just threw the sign in clipboard towards us and motioned us to fill it out. When I told her that my mom was a new patient, she said, "Hey you! Come here and fill out the new patient form." When we were done filling out the form and we turned it in, the receptionist didn't even speak to us. She just used hand motions. How rude. And now for the crappiest doctor in the world, Dr. Ted Shen. This doctor doesn't like to listen to his patients and is incredibly dismissive. When my mom was trying to explain her symptoms to him, he cut her off mid sentence and said, "This has nothing to do with my area of expertise. You need to see a neurologist. Why are you here? I don't care because that is not my area of expertise. Stop complaining to me." When my mom then complained to him about her frequent stuffy nose, he was all like, "You need surgery to fix it. It's an easy procedure that takes 20 minutes. Yes or no?" What do you mean "yes or no"? When my mom and I tried to ask him about the risk and benefits of this surgery, he dismissed us. He said, "There is no need for both of you to worry about the risks. It's minimal. Both of you are asking too many questions. Stop wasting my time." WTF?!?! Plus, he didn't even take the time to look inside her nose to see what's wrong. How did he know that she needed surgery? Did this asshat just assume she needed nose surgery? What kind of shit medical practice is he running over here? He is also very arrogant. I told him I was a nurse, and I am taking my mom's symptoms and complaints very seriously. He then said, "Oh you're a nurse. Did you go to medical school for 12 years? If not, be quiet! You don't know anything!" Like wow! How rude, disrespectful, and condescending! He was also very impatient and rushing. When my mom wanted to tell him a couple more things, he kept one hand on the door knob trying to leaving the room. He also had the audacity to say, "Okay. Hurry up. Please shorten your story." Like wow! What an ass. He just seemed so annoyed and irritated when we kept asking him questions. *sigh* When he used the otoscope to look into my mom's ears, he was very rough. Also, when he used some medical device to take out some ear wax from my mom's ears, he was incredibly rough. He was so rough that my mom screamed out in pain. I told him to stop what he was doing immediately, and he called my mom weak for being unable to tolerate what he was doing to my mom's ears. Horrible bedside manners. I wanted to punch this guy in the face so badly in that moment. Do yourself a favor and do NOT see him. He's the worst doctor ever. My mom and I felt belittled after our visit. He's the doctor from hell. He seriously lacks compassion, empathy, and understanding. Dude is a massive douche bag. I honestly expected more and better from a doctor. This is probably one of the worst experiences / interactions I have ever had with a doctor. They accept both cash and credit cards. There is no credit card minimum. read more

Agreed with the review that says he took all of 6 seconds with the patient. I have to say, I'm very disappointed in this doctor's poor bedside manner with patients. I'm a medical social worker and work with patients in the elderly community. My elderly mother was referred to him by her primary for chronic ear wax build up, obstructing her hearing. She had previously complained to me about a sinus procedure he had done on her which was very painful for her, but she chose to continue to see him because he had previously done a great job cleaning her ears. She went back to see him and came home upset stating that he rushingly attended her, was very dismissive of her symptoms, was trying to sell her hearing aids instead, and did a poor job of cleaning her ears. One was still muffled. I called the doctor's office and scheduled another appointment for her. This time I decided I was going to go with her, to see what was going on. True to form, Dr Shen rushed in, was very short at explaining what was going with my mother, using words like "I told you", and "I already explained it to her". She's 81 years old. Where is the respect? No patience and poor, condescending behavior. It's important to have empathy and the desire to bring comfort to your patients. None here though. My mother suffers from vertigo which gets triggered when her ears are cleaned. She began to feel it come on while he re-cleaned her ear. Instead of being understanding and explaining to her what was going on, he was short and dismissively stated "it will go away". I was thoroughly disgusted. You're in the helping profession and get paid well to provide a service. If you don't like it, you should not be doing what you're doing. People pay you, as well as insurance companies for care. They deserve more than poor quality, take your money and dash service. read more

Gonna start with pros: Straightforward approach. Doesn't mince words at all. Office staff were friendly, efficient, professional. Cons: Biggest con: when a doctor takes all of 6 seconds to look at both ears, nose and throat, and you've paid $200 (I'm a cash payer because I can't afford health insurance) you feel kinda ripped off. The straightforward approach was hurried. After contemplating the time he took, I truly don't believe he looked at my ears properly. And, the information he gave me I could have received via chat GPT. The point of seeing a specialist is to have them REALLY look at you. I felt that he was tired of explanations, and wasn't interested in really helping me or looking. I have high frequency deafness and tinnitus that is increasing. And I feel like there's fluid in my inner ear. No real advice was given except "get a hearing aid" and "Prozac can alleviate tinnitus sometimes." All in all, not a satisfying experience. I wish he cared just a little more. I get the feeling he's just pissed off about being a doctor, or he just really didn't like me for some reason and was only interested in a perfunctory meeting. And I was pleasant, friendly, and was receptive and agreeable. Not sure there was any more I could have done on my end to help make the experience better. Conclusion: it's him. He just did not take the time to really look at me and that is the point of waiting two and a half months to see a doctor in person. Would he have treated me differently if I were Asian and not white? Maybe. Or, maybe it's because he saw I was a cash patient? That causes a negative response in some doctors also ( as they make more money from people with insurance.) Who knows the reason. I can only speculate. I won't go back. read more

My son got hit on the nose playing basketball about two weeks ago and may have broken it. It's not aligned, so we wanted to see an ENT to have the bridge of his nose realigned. This was a huge waste of time. Ted was so arrogant and condescending. He did not even let my wife finish explaining what happened to my son. Every time we spoke he would cut us off. He totally brushed us off. From the moment he saw us, he didn't want anything to do with us. Talk about no bedside manners or manners in general. The office ladies are AWESOME. They were helpful in explaining things and paperwork to me. An incident happened in the office before my appointment so they explained that my appointment was pushed back a few minutes, but they kept me aware of what was going on, offered me water. Overall I felt this was a short wait compared to the times I've waited at other offices. The nurse and doc were friendly, helpful and explained what I needed to do at home. Usually doc and nurses are in a rush to see you out so they can see the next patient, but Dr. Shen explained my allergies to me, drew a diagram for me to see, I felt he really cared that I was suffering. So this guy has two offices? Let me just repeat my review here as well. I am writing this review on behalf of my mom. Based on her experience, this is probably the worst doctor that exists on this planet. My mom was complaining of stuffy nose and ear pain. The doctor was extremely dismissive of her problems. He does not dive into her problems and instead keeps saying that her problems mostly stem from depression and anxiety. That is a very demeaning assumption to make of any patients. If you don't know what the differentials are, please do not blame it on the patient's mental health. He then proceeds to also say that he is a surgeon and that my mom should have seen her family physician first. My mom has insurance so she has the choice to go directly see a specialist if she chooses to. Plus, her family doctor is full and it would take months before she can schedule her next appointment. On top of all this, he constantly cuts her off, does not listen to her thoughts, and overall extremely condescending (which has been noted repeatedly by other reviews). A patient may present with a medical complaint and at times, the medical complaint may not necessarily be an issue needing intervention. But the job of a doctor is to be empathetic, build rapport, and reassure the patient that all is well. Again, being a surgeon does not exclude you from this simple responsibility that they ingrain into your training since medical school. As an ENT doctor, your job is not just limited to holding a scapel in the operating room. You are also responsible for outpatient medicine, so know your outpatient medicine. You are a doctor so treat you patients like people, and not as an anatomical models. Seems like Dr. Shen is no different from a butcher with a knife. Does Dr. Shen have the necessary skills to be an ENT surgeon? Probably. But years of surgery training has depleted him of any empathy and he's now just a hollow shell of his former self. read more

BAD!!!!!!!!! I made an appointment about a month ago. I came in 20min early to fill out the forms so I can get my treatment on time. They put me in the room myself for 30 mins. Nobody came so I had to walk out of the room asked the doctor and was told I had to wait another 30 mins because they need to take care of the other patient. What is the point of making an appointment if I have to wait for that long....? I wasted my whole month waiting for this treatment when I could have just gone to other hospital. Went in for possible ear infection, Dr. Shen assured me it was no ear infection sent me away telling me that it was a dental problem " after I told him him I had no mouth pain" without further evaluation! Well Dr. Shen you might want to take a better look at your patient's because my problem was the beginning of Bell's palsy which sent me into a mild stroke! So now I have major doctor bills and the right side of my face drooping for up to 6 months! Not to mention losing money not being able to work! He makes giant assumptions and doesn't really seem very thorough. He doesn't listen to your concerns, and doesn't allow for your side of the issue. He may be the doctor but isn't living in your shoes. Not a fan. Will find someone with some actual empathy and compassion. I am so tired of these sterile doctors that think they're God's gift. Paula was very rude and condescending. She didn't want to accept any tricare military patient saying Dr Shen is out of network so the authorization from my PCP would need to be amended. And then I said I also have Blue Cross Blue Shield. She still did not want to accept me until I told her I don't care coz this one is PPO. She says my insurances may not pay. I don't care it'll get paid. And then she asked me what it was for I said it's vertigo and she says Dr Shen doesn't treat that unless it's ear related. Duh? I saw Dr. Shen for the first time today. I had read the reviews about him and was somewhat surprised at the bad reviews he had. My better half had been to see him before, and she thought very highly of him. So, I went anyway. I arrived on time, but had to wait for about 30 minutes in my car before I could come up. Since we are still in a pandemic due to COVID-19, I understood the wait; the doctor wants to minimize exposure risks to the virus. Anyway, I came up and the assistant took my temperature and asked me to fill out some forms. Thought she was very efficient and polite, a pleasant person. After a not too long a wait, I was called into the doctor's office. I found Dr. Shen to be very pleasant, knowledgeable and has a good sense of humor! He was very straightforward and forthwith in his analysis of my problems and answered all my questions. In my opinion Dr. Shen is condescending, quick to assume a diagnoses, totally arrogant in thinking his way or the high way (because there's never ever been a complicated medical case???). Dr. Shen contrary to what some have given him on their survey, I can definitely say, he did a good job, great job in examining me and diagnosing my issues when I first time going in to see him. Yes he might be quick or short in seeing me or other patients and that is because he knows what he is doing and he knows how to fix it by recommending solutions and giving me peace of mind about what I came in for. Waiting is also not bad. Trust me, I have waited in some for 2 hours waiting to be seen. Dr. Shen is fast but precise in his diagnosing your issues. I give this man a 5 star for it! Because of some negative Yelp reviews I almost did not choose this doctor even though highly recommended by a retired otolaryngologists, friend of mine. I am now SO GLAD I followed the recommendation and one week after a complicated surgery to reconstruct my ear after having a large melanoma removed from behind my ear at City of Hope, I am totally good to go. Before the surgery by Dr. Shen my ear canal had completely closed so tight I could not get my hearing aid in the ear and of course could not hear anything. There was no doctor at City of Hope that would attempt the surgery. I tell you Dr. Ted Shen is a genius surgeon. In addition he is just a really great human being. Easy to talk to and laid out the proposed surgery in simple understandable language. I felt so comfortable and at ease going into the surgery and the results are even far beyond my expectations. Everyone in his office was courteous and professional in person and on the phone. Wait time was minimal, with Dr. Shen actually seeing me before my scheduled time. He encouraged me to keep him up to date on any issues and helped reassure me that my symptoms would get better. Location is convenient with plenty of available parking. Went for an audio gram because I had ringing in my ear and was told everything was fine. Their test was an iPad with headphones. I am comparing this to a second experience I had. The other location had a dedicated sound proof room where they ran multiple tests and quickly discovered hearing loss. If you are really in pain and need to be seen they often will try to squeeze you in at one of the locations. He doesn't seem "arrogant" (and other things from other comments). He's no-nonsense. I came in after diagnosis of a tumor from a CT Scan. He didn't send me out for a biopsy, he did it right there. He didn't sent me out for a scope down my nose and into my throat, he did it right there and then. It wasn't pleasant, but he was straight forward and talked me through it all. Tumor needs to be removed. He was not in a rush and answered all my questions and fears. I know I will be in great hands. I can tell that he is very passionate about healing others and highly skilled. I would definitely recommend him, especially frightened patients with a frightful diagnosis. read more

I have to say Dr. Shen is one of the most knowledgeable, caring and sympathetic doctors. The symptoms have been hurting for 2 months and 2 other ENT Dr mis-diagnosed me for other problems. Dr Shen within minutes diagnosed my problem. His office is very human. When I told them that my head has been hurting, they are the only one office that offers me to do walk in though they have a full booking out of 5 different ENT Dr office that I called.
