I had significant hearing loss in my right ear and was referred to Shen. Waited over an hour for my appointment, when I was finally taken in, I was given a hearing test. He looked at it and proceeded to tell me that as a matter of fact, that I might have a brain tumor!!! It was like, oh, and by the way, you might have a brain tumor, that's what causes hearing loss. I didn't know what to say. I don't know if he was trying to impress the blonde intern in the room, but it didn't make me feel very good. Made the brain scan appointment, and once I finally heard back from the office, (he doesn't call you back) they said it was negative. Imagine that. Terrible bedside manner and he seems to not really care for his patients. They just pad his bank account. I will find another doctor and get a professional opinion, hopefully not another quack. read more

Dr Shen was arrogant and explained things without listening first, and spreads misinformation, such as adults can't get ear infections. I DO NOT recommend him. I never felt so dismissed by a medical professional. He said, as casually as could be, my vertigo was more likely a brain tumor than ear infections. I brought my son to Dr. Shen for a breathing problem. He wasn't able to breathe properly through his nose and Dr. Shen found out right away that he had a deviated septum and blocked Turbinates. He suggested a regular use of Flonase and let me know that surgery was an option but that he wouldn't recommend it because my son is young, his body will change, that we should exhaust other methods before that step and that the turbinates were possibly inflamed due to allergies. To be honest, I wasn't satisfied. I had seen my son have issues breathing and I wanted a quick fix for him. I had a few friends with kids that had the same issue but they had surgeries to open up those turbinates instead. I actually went to a few more doctors for more opinions, three more and ended up realizing that Dr. Shen was right. He and one other ENT doctor (a highly recommended one) both said that surgery wasn't needed while the other two wouldn't budge from the surgery route and didn't offer the concerns that Dr. Shen mentioned. We began the Flonase the day of my first visit with Dr. Shen and after about a month, my son was breathing just fine. In fact, it actually happened a lot sooner than that. I am glad we were able to avoid surgery and am glad Flonase (we use Sensimist) is working. Such a simple fix but the patience to see it through was needed on my part. I think back now about how willing I was to put my son through anaesthesia and am slightly ashamed about it. The possibility of the turbinates growing again was high so it might have only been a temporary relief and at a high cost. I see that a few reviews are over Dr. Shen's bedside manner. Ok, I can agree that he is directly to the point about what he sees and what his experience suggests. I personally appreciate this style as I have another child with a chronic medical condition and could have saved a lot of headaches regarding her care if her original doctors had not been so wishy-washy about her treatments. I would recommend him to anyone though as he let me know he also has children and gives advice based on what he would do for them. Thanks for reading! read more

The front office staff are very rude and unprofessional. I had an appointment at 2:40 and till 3:40 I still waiting. I asked front staff and was told the doctor is running behind and there is nothing she can do about it. The other staff is even worse told me there are other people are waiting so I shall just waite, or I can reschedule the appointment after I have waited for an hour. A temporary dentist diagnosed me with a blocked salivary gland when I had a bump on the inside of my cheek. This dentist made it clear that he knew nothing about insurance, but could just remove it then. I'm glad I checked because it would have cost me $1000 out of pocket. Dr. Shen said that if it HAD been a blocked salivary gland it might have permanently damaged me if it was operated on like that. It was something else, based on my irregular bite and until that issue was corrected it wasn't necessary to try and remove it. I'm seeing Dr. Shen again in April for another matter and I have a lot of trust in him. read more

Save your money and time, see a less dismissive/arrogant and more caring ENT! I had a heavy item fall on my nose and got an X-ray. The radiologist told me I have a possible nondisplaced nasal fracture. I could see a bony bump on my nose, and developed headaches centered behind my nose a few days after the accident, so I wanted an ENT opinion. Arrived on time but had to wait 50 minutes to see the doctor for about five rushed minutes. Dr. Shen started taking photos of my face and nose while I was talking to him. He told me that he is not a 'headaches doctor' and I should see a neurologist and take pain meds. Regarding the bump on my nose, he said he 'doesn't know how it happened and it's not from the accident' even though I insisted multiple times that it's a bump I only saw after the accident. I am writing this review on behalf of my mom. Based on her experience, this is probably the worst doctor that exists on this planet. My mom was complaining of stuffy nose and ear pain. The doctor was extremely dismissive of her problems. He does not dive into her problems and instead keeps saying that her problems mostly stem from depression and anxiety. That is a very demeaning assumption to make of any patients. If you don't know what the differentials are, please do not blame it on the patient's mental health. He then proceeds to also say that he is a surgeon and that my mom should have seen her family physician first. My mom has insurance so she has the choice to go directly see a specialist if she chooses to. Plus, her family doctor is full and it would take months before she can schedule her next appointment. On top of all this, he constantly cuts her off, does not listen to her thoughts, and overall extremely condescending (which has been noted repeatedly by other reviews). A patient may present with a medical complaint and at times, the medical complaint may not necessarily be an issue needing intervention. But the job of a doctor is to be empathetic, build rapport, and reassure the patient that all is well. Again, being a surgeon does not exclude you from this simple responsibility that they ingrain into your training since medical school. As an ENT doctor, your job is not just limited to holding a scapel in the operating room. You are also responsible for outpatient medicine, so know your outpatient medicine. You are a doctor so treat you patients like people, and not as anatomical models. Seems like Dr. Shen is no different from a butcher with a knife. Does Dr. Shen have the necessary skills to be an ENT surgeon? Probably. But years of surgery training has depleted him of any empathy and he's now just a hollow shell of his former self. read more

I have gone to Dr Shen for many years. I have to admit, removing ear wax can be painful but after speaking to Dr Shen about why it's so painful I totally understand. Came here to get my nose check out because I couldn't breathe very well to the point where I couldn't sleep at night. My primary doctor diagnosed me with polyps but Dr. Shen said it was just bad allergies and a deviated septum. Gave me quite an easy solution and within a month or two I could finally sleep!! I ended up going through with surgery on my deviated septum and I am super glad Dr. Shen was my surgeon. I'm currently healing right now but super excited to see good results! :) Dr. Shen really knows his stuff and I highly recommend him if anyone else has breathing issues through their nose! He's extremely thorough and puts you at ease and def wants the best for you. I'm so glad I came here otherwise I'd still be in pain of not having my 8 hours of sleep!! read more

I'm also confused by the negative reviews for Dr. Ted because all my experiences back in late 2012 and early 2013 have been really good. I was referred to Dr. Shen from another ENT's office, and I'm glad because he was able to assist me in my ear cyst, post-surgery infection from another ENT, Dr. Kay D. Dr. Ted assessed my situation, as I came to him with a bulging ear cyst site, filled with pus. My head was throbbing with pain and my ear area was so full of pus, it looked like it would explode. He basically explained that the reason for the recurring infection in my ear where a cyst was removed by another ENT, was because the cyst and it's long tract wasn't completely removed 100% by Dr. Kay D. He first helped me by making an incision and releasing all of the pus, instead of trying to suck it out with a large syringe. That took away a lot of my head pain. Dr. Ted told me to keep it clean and change the packing and then come back for a check up. It didn't resolve, even with antibiotics, so he scheduled me for another surgery to remove ALL of the cyst. The surgery went well, and it did not get infected. He told me he had to cut way deeper during my surgery where I was under general anesthesia; and I was so relieved that it healed well the second time (the 1st and only surgery by Dr. Shen). Dr. Ted was always patient with me, and would explain the tools and procedures he would do, and instructed me on how to pack the ear area so it would heal and close up. My wife has been waiting one week Shen to read her MRI results - she called on Day 3 and Day 5 to follow up. But she is clearly not important to him - even though he told her the cause of her hearing loss may be a brain tumor. This is a great armchair diagnosis, made even better by Shen's lack of follow up - you may have a brain tumor and I will make you wait a while at least a week before I look at your test results. Not sure why it would take a week for him to look at the MRI results after they have been sent to his office. Maybe he is booking too many patients so he can increase his income and cannot provide anything that resembles professional service to his existing ones. Who knows. One can only hope that he receives the same level of service that he provides. read more

Dr Shen is the most arrogant, insulting doctor my husband and I have ever seen. He finally agreed to do a biopsy of some blisters in my husband's mouth but continued to say it was not necessary and did not need to be done. My husband also got the blisters on his tongue and Dr Shen told us that is impossible. I'm not surprised at the review that said he enjoys insulting his patients. In my opinion Dr. Shen is condescending, quick to assume a diagnoses, totally arrogant in thinking his way or the high way (because there's never ever been a complicated medical case???). He rushed through my appointment as fast as possible, blew off my concerns in a way that made me feel idiotic for bringing them up, was INCREDIBLY rough removing some compacted wax and when I expressed it was quite painful he said "you're fine." He then proceeded to tell me my issues with my ear were nothing, ignore it, it's "in my head" and "caused by anxiety". When I expressed that I'd be interested in doing some tests to be positive there is no issue, he drafted up referrals for three tests "probably not covered under insurance." He explained the tests as if he was speaking to another doctor, and not like a patient who might not understand more complex medical terminology. Total lack of empathy or bedside manner. Referred here by Health Care Partners. What a waste of $20. I coulda had a nice steak dinner instead of coming here. Receptionists weren't bad. Fill out the usual paperwork...etc...etc.. then say bye bye to the $20. Once in the room, nurse does the vitals, questions, etc.. Then knock knock and doc shows up. I tell him a door hit my nose. Small dent He explains that it is my glasses that caused it. I reiterate that, "NO...it was a door that hit my glasses several months back which caused bleeding a dent and headaches. Meanwhile he's typing a hundred miles an hour on his computer that the indentation on my nose was caused by my glasses. Helloooo.... What's it take to get thru to you that my pretty little nose was fine before the door walked into me and dented my nose. Anyways...he kept saying it was my glasses and typing away. Everything he types including suggestions, meds..goes out to his three secretaries in the other room and then you get a small print out of things he wants you to do. When I suggested seeing another specialist, he said that they are going to say the same thing. He also said my insurance won't cover cosmetic surgery. Maybe I would be better off going to a auto body shop and getting my face filled with bondo instead of coming here. read more

The only thing about this appointment that was good. Was the friendly receptionist. She gets the star. I read Dr. Shen's crummy reviews before making the appointment and was very hesitant to schedule one. But since I was referred by my primary care doctor I figured I'd give him a chance. The Doctor is rude. I had to wait a bit for my appointment which is understandable, but don't walk into the room having already diagnosed me before you have even looked at me, spoken to me or because you are nearly done with your day. Dr. Shen walked in & asked me why I was here. I explained to him about my ongoing long-time nasal and sinus issues. I also mentioned I was on two different nasal sprays, had tried allergy meds and nothing alleviated the problems I was having and I was frustrated so my primary care doc referred me to him. He asked if I had been tested for allergies, I said yes, and we discussed a few prior allergist and ENT docs I had been to in the past. He immediately told me the air is polluted and your sinuses carry dust, pollen, bacteria and need to be cleaned out several times a day and to try that. He didn't even look in my nose! I told him my doctor thought that maybe Dr. Shen would check for polyps in my nose as maybe that is what may be the cause of these sinus issues. Dr. Shen immediately said that he was sure there were no polyps nor do I have a deviated septum. That based on what I was telling him it was probably a neurological issue. I asked if that meant I should have my brain checked and he said, "If you think it'll make you feel better." Are you freaking kidding me Doc? Right then I knew he was a jerk. He mumbled about how even if there was something wrong surgery was never the answer & he wouldn't do surgery on me until I cleaned my nose out daily for 3 months and came back for a followup. After numbing my nose, he put the scope down my nose, which freakin' hurt... he babbled on about stuff, pulled the scope out & stated he'd write up a summary of my visit. This summery states in writing that I have obstruction due to a deviated septum and turbinate hypertrophy. He also notated the option to pursue surgery!!! Whaaaaaat???? Didn't you just say surgery was never the answer & there was nothing wrong with my nose it was all in my head? I will not be going back to this a$$hat. He's too cocky and tries to diagnose you without actually checking you and while basically calling you stupid since us patients obviously aren't the one with the degree. Also, to note: The woman before me was complaining of a few issues, and I noticed he pretty much wrote her off too. When he didn't ask her to come back to be checked she asked him about another appointment & told her she didn't need to be seen, but if it made her feel better to schedule an appointment for in one year. I just figured maybe she was a hypochondriac or crazy. But now, thinking that should have been my first red flag at the appointment. Also, parking sucks! Dr. Ted Shen is awesome and he deserves 5 stars, but BEWARE of what you'll be billed for if you have outpatient surgery WITHIN his office which deserves 1 star. Dr. Ted Shen's bill for my septoplasty turbinate resection was $5000 in network, BUT the surgical room set up charged $32000 as being out of network. My surgery was in Ted Shen's office, and he's in network. I was charged $32000 for a surgery room that is within his office? How did the surgery room become out of network, when it is within his office? It is sad that I will now have to find a different doctor, and forewarn the people that I referred to him. read more

Found Dr. Shen by Googling & reading reviews. Went in with my 19-year old college freshman son and the doctor was a perfect fit. He spoke to my son in an informal, but knowledgeable way -- joked around just the right amount to get my son to actually hear what he said. Made clear that may son needs to pay attention to his health, take responsibility. I really liked the entire office and appreciated the time that the doctor spent with us. It felt like he paid a lot of attention to us, answered all our questions, never made us feel rushed, and did the right test to diagnose some issues two other doctors had missed. I saw this ENT doctor yesterday. The appointment did not go very well. Before he even examined me he said I had post nasal drop, saying a high percentage of his patients have a cough that is caused by that. I tried to give him some recent history as well as some family history. He cut me off and replied he didn't want to hear about my mother and sisters problems and said it was all in their heads (pointed to his head). He barely looked in my nose and throat. He never referred to my vocal cords, which is why I was referred, nor did he do anything to check them. When I tried to ask a question his reply was "As I already told you...". He also made a clear reference that the problem is all in my head (again pointing to his head). In all, his recommendations were to use a nasal spray and a nasal wash. His prognosis was it would take about 3 years to clear up if I used the spray and wash as recommended. I went to this appointment with an open mind hoping to get some relief for this ongoing cough. I have no disrespect for Dr. Shen but my opinion is he came into the appointment with tunnel vision and he would not deviate from his opinion. When I tried to explain my symptoms, history and overall exhaustion from this cough, his insinuations of mental problems was inappropriate and insulting not only for me but my family. Without a doubt the worst, rudest, most arrogant, and dismissive doctor I have ever been to in my life. I was freaked out and upset about my condition and he basically told me that there was nothing that could be done and the loud noise which precipitated my tinnitus had nothing to do with the fact that I now had tinnitus. Repeated exposure to loud noises is the textbook cause for tinnitus. Look it up. I never had tinnitus before, then I was exposed to an extended series of loud noises next to my left ear after which I then had persistent loud tinnitus. Now I have tinnitus in that ear alone. And this dude with his god complex decided that couldn't allow me to self diagnose myself for the obvious cause of my problem. What a tool. And he arrogantly told me that there was no cure and that it would never go away. He seemed to really enjoy that. Total a-hole. read more

I had this persistent cough for several months and decided to see different ENT specialists to finally get rid of it. Since appointments with these specialists are hard to schedule (weeks out), I ended up having 3 appointments with three different doctors. Dr. Shen was the only one that did not bother to actually look inside the throat to see if there was anything there. Instead, he almost instantly knew what my problem was by just listening to what I said... which was odd because the other two specialists were not 100% sure what I had even after they did several blood tests, x-rays, and looked inside the throat. I have a feeling he gives the same spill to all his patients with similar symptoms... in a nutshell, what you have is an incurable allergy that you will have to deal with for the rest of your life by flushing your nostrils. Luckily for me, I also saw two other specialists and my cough is now gone (knock on wood). Definitely not a doctor I would recommend to anyone based on my experience. read more

He was one of the rudest most condesending people I have ever encountered, let alone a Dr. In fact I would go out on a limb and say he was even mean. He wanted to talk about my hearing loss, but that is not why I was there, I had waiting 6 weeks to see him only to be told dizziness had nothing to do with the ears and I could have a brain tumor. No compassion or interest at all. And he acted like I was the stupidest person to come to him. I also had to wait for quite a while while he saw other patients. I haven't met Dr. Ted Shen but their front office was kind to let me konw that they dont deal with turbinate transplants/implants or MSC injections to save my time. They were even more kind enough to share that checking university hospitals may be better option for Empty Nose Syndrome issues. How nice of them! The only reason why I am writing this review is because his mannerisms toward his clients, for a lack of a better word, suck. His lack of empathy and his egotistical personality made me extremely uncomfortable. I came in with an enlarged lymph node and his methods were all invasive. He suggested surgery right after my needle biopsy and it felt to me that he was only after money and not the wellness of my health. Then he violated HIPPA and had the nerve to call me and tell me to "stop harassing his staff" when his staff was at fault for telling my parents that's i in fact told them not to tell my parents anything. Keep in mind I am well over 18. What ever happened to always being on the patient's side? He's lucky I didn't report him to the boards. Doctors need to keep in mind that confidentiality is so important. I work in the mental health field and that is the first thing we are taught and I am sure that doctors learn about HIPPA right when they begin med school. I cancelled my surgery right away because he never made me feel comfortable since the day I met him. I have now found a doctor who I can rely on and he has been so much more positive than Dr. Shen. I feel comfortable moving on with surgery with my new doctor and he has even told me that it is unlikely that this lymph node is anything to be concerned about. In contrast, Dr. Shen has related every possible diagnosis to cancer. I'm 24 and it made me so sad that I thought my life was at risk. I had high stress and anxiety for the time being with Dr. Shen. But now I feel much more relaxed and I can continue with my ADL's with no problem. Please avoid this doctor at all costs. You want a doctor that is going to be by your side and root for you all the way. Dr. Shen is not any of these. He does not put his patients first at all and I really believe he gets this weird rush when he sees his patients scared out of their minds because he gave a diagnosis that is life threatening. Avoid him. I had a major problem when my nose wouldn't heal after the flu. After two months of suffering and trying a few rounds of antibiotics, my primary Doctor referred me to find an ENT dr. He took my insurance so I tried. He made me feel stupid & incompetent and really didn't listen to me. He tried to sell me on allergy 'mists' which go under your tongue. No thanks. He then prescribed the neti pot & aloe gel to put up my nose. I'm very allergic to aloe and complained that it caused sneezing attacks. He answered back laughing at me "no ones allergic to aloe"! Guess what, I am! He never helped me. I ended up finding an amazing allergist who cleared me up within two weeks. I would never recommend this dr. He never helped me & treated me like I was an idiot. read more
