One of the a best Roti Shops you will find in the DMV! It is always pleasure to talk about this "mom & pop" shop. It's one of the few in the neighbor that has the best customer service and consistently good eats. This is a small family run business, with only a few tables to sit...well now thanks to COVID...none. It is mostly a takeout type of place with some of the best West Indian food in DC. The simplest way to describe Teddy's Roti Shop is in two words: Authentic and Unique. The food is Authentic and full of down home Caribbean flavors. The menu items are unique and span across a varied choice of native "Trini" eats to Jamaican fare. My go-to are the roti's of course, with my favorites being the goat and conch roti -- With Xxxtra Gravy on the side...Mandatory!! It makes a huge difference and the only way I enjoy or shall I say.... like to wash-down all that extra roti! The taste of the Roti can not be duplicated. I particularly enjoy the Bussupshut with either curry goat, chicken or conch. They make a truly good roti bread and believe me, I've tried many to compare. It's dense, flaky, not too greasy and perfect for sopping up all that curry goodness and gravy! The doubles and the aloo pies are also very good and quite large. It's like being in a "Trinidad" family's house for dinner! The service is great, "down-home" and the price point is moderate. Mixed review here. I went for doubles and was quite disappointed. Bara was thick and tasteless. Chana was also thick. Didn't finish the doubles. Food came out quick and piping hot, we also got the side of hot sauce. We killed that roti as soon as we got back to hotel, and it was full of flavors plus gigantic portion. This place had the worst roti I've ever had in my life. Also they shouldn't sell doubles either bc it was so tough and nasty. My friend wanted to take her food home and they refused to give her box, made her pay $1 for a box after I spent $50. The owners are upset with me for being rude, but this was the worst food And service I've had in the 30years I've been in the states. If you're looking for roti, try Sapodilla in SE. The food is much better and the service is impeccable. Unless you're American and don't know what roti should taste like. The food was trash and they should be ashamed for serving it. I brought the food back in with the tray and let the owner know "look, this roti was not good at all" the least you could do is give my friend a box for her food. I literally brought back an entire roti, I couldn't even force myself to eat it. The owner responded that I was belligerent and rude which is far from the truth. Teddys Roti shop has been on Georgia Ave for as long as I can remember. I remember coming here as a little girl for Roti and Buss Up Shut all the way from Southern MD! Yes it is worth that drive!!! I grew up eating the Curry Goat Buss Up Shut which I still order to this day. I recently visited since I was in the area and I remember the aromas from the tender curry goat that melts in your mouth. Just the right amount of spice. I love the potatoes and chick peas as well. The Roti is always hot and flaky and such hugeeee portions might I add. I can normally eat off my plate for 3 meals or so. Doubles are soo yummy... hot and flaky fried bread with the sweet chutney and spicy chickpeas... such a good combination worth eating in the car and spilling everywhere! 4 stars for the ginormous price hike!!! I love Caribbean cuisines. Someone recently asked me what my favorite cuisine was and I couldn't choose because it is either everywhere in the Caribbean or everywhere in Southeast Asia. But anyway... Teddy's Roti Shop is actually my only experience with Trini cuisine, despite having Trini friends. I am better versed in Haitian, Dominican, Jamaican, Puerto Rican, etc. So I have nothing to compare this to, but I really love it. The ratings are mixed so it might not be the best, but I'm always happy when I'm here. It's tiny and mostly does a takeout business. I've had aloo pie, doubles, patties, and buss-up shut here. I want to try more but I love buss-up shut so much I just end up ordering that, typically with dark meat chicken (unfortunately, bone-in, but when I ordered it with the white meat, it was too dry). It is huge and I can usually get three meals out of it, so that is helpful. One time I tried to eat the entire portion and that didn't go so well. It's super flavorful and I love adding the pepper sauce to it for a bit of heat. Their patties are good and have a hint of heat, which I love. The aloo pie was a bit bland for me, which is weird because I love a good aloo chaat kati, so I figured I'd like this. I usually also order a doubles, so I can have that for breakfast the next day (it actually heats up really well in the cast iron pan). The doubles! The doubles! I honestly have nothing to compare it to. I'm not Trini and haven't seen/had them elsewhere. I live in Woodbridge, VA and spend my Sundays in DC. I drove the distance from SE to get some. The passion juice and sorrel are also good. I'm not sure how fresh but they're good. My brother had the goat roti and enjoyed it. Teddy's is a local institution, period. This was the first place I ever had a buss up shut and it will be the only place I ever it from again. They give you a generous portion of meat, chana and potatoes and the largest paratha I've ever seen. One order is enough for breakfast lunch and dinner. The right amount of spice and full of flavor. The goat meat is tender and juicy. The only other person that cooks goat this is my dad. People might complain about the prices but its pretty fair considering how much you get. I decided to try this place since I've never eaten here before. We ordered two roti (one chicken and one shrimp), two beef patties and a curry goat dinner. The food was tasteless, the curry goat was microwaved and dry, the container was packed with rice, with one layer of microwaved curry goat on top. The cabbage that is supposed to be on the side had absolutely no taste and I wasn't sure if I was eating from a Trinidadian restaurant or a soul food restaurant because this is not how the cabbage is supposed to be done. I have been trying to support as many businesses as I can during this pandemic. I drove 8 miles to this place and I was highly disappointed. Everybody else raves about how great it is in their reviews and how this is the best!! The only thing that was good to my palate, was the roti itself. My curry shrimp was loaded with vegetables with a handful of shrimp in it and it was just packed with vegetables. So I haven't had a amazing Roti since Captain Mikes in Lillburn, GA closed, so I was SUPER EXCITED to hear about Teddy's Roti I called ahead to ask about indoor seating and they said it was available. What the didn't mention was that the shop is TINY. So there's no way to socially distanced from the people walking in to place take out orders. The menu was wide and varied and the ship smelled AMAZING. I ordered doubles, a shrimp and vegetable roti and peanut punch. Everything was good. Roti shop hidden in DC near silver spring area. It's a hole in the wall establishment when you enter the restaurant. It's pretty overpriced. The portion is HUGE, but I wish they added more curry sauces to the roti wrap. I love it with the bone in chicken curry. Wandered in to this carryout spot on a Saturday afternoon. It was easy to place an order at the counter and the staff was very friendly. Our food was ready in a flash! We got goat roti and pholouri which is a deep fried split pea dough. A little crispy on the outside, kind of chewy bready on the inside, not super flavorful but it soaked up the sweet tart tamarind sauce it was served with. Pros: 1. As a Trinidadian native, it is good to find a roti shop serving up local dishes in the D.C area 2. The menu is large with many vegetarian options 3. The parts was well done and tasty Cons: 1. Prices are ridiculous and the owner when writing up my bill, decided in his own wisdom to round up my bill to the nearest $100! And without a receipt either! 2. When you order a veggie buss-up-shot/paratha it should never ever ever have the following ingredients (broccoli, cabbage, carrots) what it should have is sweet curried mango/pomcethere, pumpkin, spinach (bhagi), curried potato and chickpeas (Alloo & Channa). I could not believe they put that mess as sides for a roti! 3. They messed up my order because the owner writes everything down on a white paper, so order mix ups are an expected norm . while I was there eating someone also called to complain of a mixed up order 4. The doubles didn't taste 1/2 bad, but they also didn't taste 1/4 good either Overall, I will follow my gut next time and cook my curry myself at a fracrion of the cost. It seems as though the owner is trying to maximise his revenues by overcharging unsuspecting customers.
