Teddy's Roti Shop was so good! We were craving some Trini food and actually tried to go to two other shops first before we found Teddy's and thank god we did. We got oxtail, shark and bake (have never had it in the states), and roti. They also had provisions and other soups on the menu. I was really hoping for pone cake but they didn't have any - not sure if they regularly have it though. The food was really tasty and reminded me of mom's cooking (which is VERY hard to do). The shop itself is small but there is some seating. We got there, there were a few people there - some eating in and some for take out. We got there right before it was closing and still got fresh food and good service. We were ordering for take out and they were really patient while we figured out what we wanted and didn't make us feel rushed. It even took a little bit to make the food but they didn't shut us down or tell us it was too late to order. Went back for the dhalpuri as promised and I was not disappointed. I made some curry chicken and channa home and sent hubby to get 3 roti. He brought FIVE and they were MASSIVE. 5 of us ate three meals with these five roti. They were soft, the balance of chickpea in the dough was just right and they reheated PERFECTLY a week later in the microwave with just a damp paper towel. We've found our go-to roti spot. The price is still worth it. Their portions are GENEROUS. That roti was bigger than my serving platters lol. I wish I'd taken a picture but we DEVOURED them. Even the kids who typically prefer buss up didn't complain one bit. FTW. read more

I loved this place. The food is so on point and filled with they perfect amount of flavor down to a T. I'm so glad my boyfriend and I made the 40 minute drive here. We were looking for a really good Guyanese/Caribbean spot and I think we found it. But there are 2 reasons I gave them 4 stars instead of 5: - Price - Customer Service Their prices are a tad bit high so be mindful when ordering but the portion sizes are pretty decent so I guess that makes up for it. There is also a $12 minimum for CC but most of their main dishes cost more than that anyway. I ordered the Buss-up-shot with shrimp curry and my boyfriend got the Dal Poori Tori with Goat Curry. And we also got 2 orders of Doubles, 2 creme soda, and a pack or caramel. It all came out to $50. A bit pricey but everything was soooo good. One more thing to keep in mind if you didn't already know, the curry comea wrapped in the dal poori so if you want it on the side, make sure you ask. Now I'm big on customer service and while it wasn't terrible, the woman taking our order did seem a bit...angry? She definitely didn't seem too pleasant. I just felt like she could have been a little friendlier and put a smile on. Her kind of attitude deters me from asking questions. But then again, that could just be her facade as that is just some of the Caribbean attitudes. Nevertheless, the food was good and it was worth the one time splurge. Parking can be a little rough depending on when you go but it is meter parking so also keep that in mind when you decide to go as well. My wife and I drove all the way from Accokeek MD because we had a taste for a good roti. We ordered two doubles, two chicken roti,a beef roti and a shrimp roti. We also ordered two chicken patties and a beef patty. NOTHING we ordered was worth it the patties were soft like a roti. No flakiness to them and tasteless. The doubles and roti were horrible to say the least. They were so bad you could not do anything to add flavor to them. I believe if you throw their food to a dog, the dog will bite you for insulting it I forgot to mention the stewed chicken my wife ordered was like everything else. Delicious! Another adventure of me taking the DMV. I saw the shop on Georgia avenue and thought i'd give it a try. The quaint restaurant was quiet but it had a great aroma. I got the curry chicken (thighs) roti with a bust up shut up. I carried out and the food was still hot and fresh. I realize this is a strong statement, but I believe Teddy's has the best food I've had anywhere in the district. And even though it's a Trinidadian restaurant, it most definitely has the closest thing to great Indian food that I've tried in DC. It's a little hole in the wall carryout with a couple of tables inside and outside. I'm not too familiar with Caribbean food, so when I ordered a dalpuri roti with goat, I wasn't sure how to eat it. I know dalpuri is a fried thing made of lentils, and I know roti means bread, but this gave me no indication of how to eat it. I decided it was probably like a dosa and that I should use the ample bread to pick up the goat curry and aloo bhortha filling. It was delicious. The goat curry was perfectly done, with minimal fat and maximum flavor. It wasn't too tough or chewy; it was just right. The dalpuri roti was amazing, much better than a dosa and less greasy. I soon discovered that I was eating it incorrectly when the owner saw me from inside and ran outside to stop me from my mistake. He informed me that you eat it like a burrito and that it tastes better that way. He was right. So basically, it's a big, amazing burrito with a thick, chewy dalpuri roti for bread and potato curry and goat curry for filling. I don't think I could ask for more. For sides, I got the aloo pie and doubles, but the goat roti was so big that I had to take the sides home with me. I also tried their homemade ginger pine drink, which complemented the food really well. If you're lucky, you'll get a chance to talk to Teddy himself. Teddy is a Trinidadian immigrant of Indian descent, hence the amazing Caribbean/Indian food. He was like an uncle, and I mean that in the South Asian way, not in the regular way. He told me about the food and the story of his life. He asked me to tell him my life story. He asked me to rent the basement of his house. He made me feel bad for not having a boyfriend. He asked me how to correct the address of his business on Yelp and then asked me to do it for him. He showed me pictures of his family. After an hour of eating my roti and chatting with the owner of this fine establishment, I had to leave, but I will definitely be back. I hadn't ordered the doubles with my meal, but as I was getting ready to go, Teddy said it's one of his specialties and that I just HAD to try it. When I said I was full and couldn't possibly eat another bite, he insisted that they were on the house and I should take them home because it was of the utmost importance that I try them. Long story short, Teddy's is absolutely worth a special trip. **Update** I went home and ate the doubles, even though I was still ridiculously full five hours after the roti. Doubles are AWESOME!!!! One of the few places in the DMV to get perfectly made dhalpuri. We got the curry chicken with dhalpuri on the side, oxtail buss up shut (paratha roti), beef pattys, and a double. Everything was delicious. 10/10 would recommend. I've seen the reviews talking about the prices but the portions are HUGE. I very clearly over ordered but I saved some of the curry and got some dhalpuri and paratha to-go for later. For me, this place really was love at first bite. Me being from Baltimore, there is a huge possibility that I am biased to the prices of Caribbean food from my city because I found myself looking at the prices on the board of this shop and thinking "GOOD LAWD" in my best Chris Rock voice...before pulling out my $100 bill. Bias forcibly pushed aside, I will just review Teddy's Roti Shop on the experience and food and give it a 4 star rating instead of a price influenced 3 star. As other reviewers have said, this definitely is more of a carry-out place as opposed to eat in unless you're trying to kill time for a few quick minutes and/or disappear for a few. I ordered the jerk chicken dinner for my friend and a spinach & potato buss-up shut w/ yams added. My veggie buss-up shut was pretty good and big but I think I would have preferred the roti over it because it was so thick. It came rolled up like a burrito but more than half my mouthfuls were dough and not much filler. There also weren't many vegetable offerings for the original price so I found myself searching for the most economical ways to get a simple veggie buss-up with pumpkin, potatoes, and spinach without spending too much on the add-in costs. Back in Baltimore, I'm used to getting at least three veggies with my roti or buss-ups, but the costs here made it hard to duplicate this fave dish of mines. I do give props to Teddy for having white meat jerk chicken, as it's hard to find smaller places that offer it. Teddy's jerk is more of a dry rub instead of the saucy types I'm used to but my taste buds did not complain! Our chicken was so tender, juicy and delicately seasoned we almost forgot we were eating white meat (note this was supposed to be my friend's dinner but I just couldn't stop my fork from constantly wandering over to his plate). The cost? $30. The taste? $30. Oh, wait I meant, it was great, but $30?!?! Back in Baltimore I would have paid at least $10 less, but I guess when in Rome...you go broke and chill in the slums with the paupers because you spent all your money on some Caribbean food. So good! Just got delivery from Teddy's and was very impressed. Both the goat & shrimp buss up shut dishes were great and they come with this wonderful, flaky, chewy paratha-like bread. They also come with very flavorful mashed potato / chickpea side dishes that were surprisingly good. Other excellent things we got: - Pumpkin side dish was very flavorful and sweet - Plantains were perfectly fried and slightly sweet - Tamarind sauce and hot sauce on the side packed a lot of punch in a small container By the way, at first I thought the prices for the main dishes were a bit high, but once I got the food I was overwhelmed at how huge the portions are -- easily two meals in one buss up shut. The food is really really good. There's lots bad reviews on here..but I think it's because of the prices which might make people mad. They give you huge portions so I think the price is ok. My Shrimp Buss up Shut was at least two servings and I couldn't finish it. My friends Chicken Roti was huge and he couldn't finish it. We shared the macaroni pie and ate it all and wrapped our left overs up to go. We also had a sorrel and ginger pine drink which were really good. I love really good Island food and use to go to Rita's on Georgia Avenue and the Tropicana on Georgia Avenue but now they are gone. I hope Teddys sticks around...but with the way that sector of town is getting ritzy I'm not sure it will be there much longer. Even though I've not met Teddy he has a great spot. Teddy, Teddy, Teddy has done it again. This review is late but on time. I am a lover of doubles, so let me get that out of the way. That is how I ended up at Teddy's in the first place a few years back. Crown Bakery only sells them on Friday and Saturday. God only knows when Sunrise does. For selling doubles 7 days a week, Teddy's got points in my book. After coming down from my elated state I began to strongly suspect that they were microwaving theirs. I try my best to avoid microwaves. I don't think you can get a Michelin star with a microwave in your establishment so if I was a restaurateur, I would try to copy that element. Microwaves just zap stuff. Way too hot and soggy.* Another issue, that I have had with Teddy's in the past is the price point. I definitely don't want to pigeonhole certain cuisines with a budget price point but, the microwave and the entire shabby look to the establishment does not warrant the prices. I've visited and essentially bought an appetizer and a drink and spent enough to have purchased a meal at a place with $$ in their Yelp profile. This in three visits and I haven't really been messing with Teddy's until the other day. It was a Sunday and I wanted something not yet a meal but beyond a snack. I also didn't want any meat so Teddy's it was. I ordered Polourie and Aloo Pie, my first time ordering both items. Trying to break away from doubles yo dijé. I sit down and beep beep "that's the sound of the beast." I mean, I could have said; "Please don't microwave my food, I will take it as is if it can't be ran in the oven right quick." I didn't so I am the blame. So. I drove to a nice spot for an evening "meal." The aloo pie was good. I liked it but the microwaving made it limp when it didn't need to be. The polourie was aight. I read a review, just now, that said that it wasn't authentic and I'm sure it wasn't. As I was wrapping up my "meal" I found a hair in it and it was not mizine. Now, I must say, the old me's day would have been ruined by finding a hair in my food. This is obviously not hygienic nor hygienic adjacent. But I have had so many disreputable meals and I even lived 2 years without a refrigerator (long story), so I try not to sweat the small stuff. Honestly, this hair ain't the biggest issue I got right now so I am not tripping that hard. But a hair found at a restaurant, sorely in need of a renovation, leaning too far on the microwave and price gouging. I add all that up and it equals two stars. *I am beginning to suspect that my beloved Crown Bakery mics their doubles too. The food is god darn awful, too expensive and today - the customer service is non existent. She barely opened her month, when I asked her about the cook and didn't bother to say thanks or anything, when she gave me the food. Do NOT waste your money, going to that place. They don't have anyone there, who knows how to cook Trinidadian food. The last time I went, there were Spanish people cooking the food. It tasted like garbage then. Today, it's someone Guyanese.
