They said they were not ready for take out. Even though they advised the shake machine was ready it was not so no chocolate shakes. Do better Genes Fish Fry!!! The kids meal gets smaller and smaller every time but the prices go up. I get you have to keep up with inflation but it's getting a little ridiculous. The fish was lightly breaded, not too salty, perfectly crisp and cooked. The bun was nothing extraordinary, unseasoned, untoasted. I would say the star of the show was the Coleslaw. I would recommend getting the meal if it's your first time to try everything they have because just the fish fry isn't that flavorful.

Last time I showed up, the server brought the seafood boil still in its boiling bag and cut it open in front of me. It was up to me to reach into the hot bag and pull out its contents. There was steam everywhere. A hot mess, indeed! This time, the kitchen took care of the boiling bag for me. Instead, they beautifully arranged the boiled seafood on a large platter. Wow. It looked amazing and tasted even better! This time, I'd asked for a Number 4 with mix of seasonings, including garlic and butter. I chose the Poke Bowl ($35) for my meal (my first ever poke bowl) with marinated raw tuna and salmon, edamame, cucumber, watermelon radish, snap peas, nori, avocado, sesame seeds, scallions, and pea tendrils, all over sushi rice with ginger gochugaru oil and soy sauce on the side. Apparently, 5:30PM on a Monday during Lent is a good time to dine here. We were the only customers when we walked in and only two other parties arrived by the time we left. With that said, service was friendly, prompt, and efficient. There were many different things I wanted to try, so the best option for me was the Captains Basket ($45). Initially, this seemed expensive to me. But when the meal was placed in front of me, two thoughts crossed my mind - am I going to try to eat all this? - and will I enjoy it? The answers were NO and YES, respectively. The Captains Basket contains haddock, scallops, shrimp, and Ipswich whole belly clams. The portions of each were very generous and I was able to include two sides. While I chose to have all my fish fried, I could have mixed and matched additional choices of grilled, blackened, or gluten free fried. The coating on the fried fish is light and not overly salty. All the fish varieties were perfectly cooked. The haddock was flakey, the shrimp had a slight crunch to their bite, the whole belly clams were soft and creamy, and the scallops were tender, sweet, and slightly springy. My side of onion rings were not greasy and very thinly sliced. I generally prefer a thicker sliced onion. The baked beans I ordered mostly for my wife's enjoyment, and while I thought the consistency was more fluid than what I expected, my wife said they reminded her of pork and beans. My wife's choice for dinner was the Fish N Chips ($19) - battered and fried with French fries and slaw. She had two good sized portions of haddock of equal quality to my haddock, and non-greasy fries that were crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and still tasty when I tried them at room temperature. The slaw was average. A couple of large sodas ($3.50 each) rounded out our meal. Neither of us finished our meal and took some home to enjoy the next day - and we did! The board said it was an Ommegang Grande Tripel stout at 5.5 ABV ($9). That level of ABV would be reasonable for a stout, but the color of the brew was golden like a typical Tripel, and not dark like the typical Stout. The bartender gave us a sample, and it was full of flavor with my wife noticing the vanilla tones that were described by the bartender. I didn't initially identify any specific flavor other than delicious and different than I would have expected from a stout. I also would not take issue with the posted 5.5 ABV. HOWEVER, a quick reference to Ommegang online as I write this says that it is a Belgium Tripel and the ABV is 9. Yes, NINE ABV! I would definitely have noticed if I were drinking a 9 ABV on an empty stomach. I also would have noticed it driving the car after finishing a pint within one hour. For those familiar with Utah Phillips, "It was good though!" But on to the food. We ordered a shareable Tot-Chos ($12.99) consisting of tater tots, tomatoes, avocado, cheese sauce, pickled jalapeños, and chipotle aioli. The black angus beef hot dog is very tasty even before it is topped with wild arugula, tomato, avocado, crispy onion strings, and spicy basil aioli. The combined flavors work well together on the Kings Hawaiian rolls. My choice was to try the Hogfather ($10.99) - a pork bratwurst with bacon chipotle onion jam, chipotle aioli, and miso ranch. The bratwurst was delicious and again, the flavors worked well together. BTW, my wife had a Grimm Nothing But Citra ($8), an IPA that even I found acceptable. She made me feel at home and I actually could unwind for the first time in a few days. The oysters were fresh and delectable. I think they were Blue Points. I didn't realize at first they had $1 oysters until I arrived, ordering first the fried oysters and lobster salad first. The fried oysters, by the way, were some of the best I ever tasted. The batter was delish and fried to golden brown perfection. I also liked the cool vinaigrette caddie that came with the oysters on the half shell, which apparently were 3D-printed. Very cool stuff. Besides the relaxing and fun vibes where I sat at the sidebar, I loved the interior with the old checkered floors and classy chandeliers. Imagine our surprise, then, when the best rating we can give it now is a 3! The good news: the service on my birthday Saturday was exemplary! Personable, knowledgeable and efficient. The oyster bar was pricey but excellent! Likewise, the desserts were spectacular as well, as were the cocktails. The bad news: The main courses for both of us were, at best, inconsistent. Two very different meals with similar problems: both the scallop and the sausage/gnocchi entrees were completely undercooked, rendering them all but inedible. Raw in the centers of both, which also resulted in digestive problems for both of us. Risotto also undercooked, with the rice and the pasta of both dishes not even al dente. Again, nearly raw. Unacceptable. A $250 meal that would have been expensive at half the price, and 'fine dining?' Not even close. We expected better food, even though the service and ambiance beyond reproach. Not sure if we'll return. It IS all about taste, ultimately, and Jack's did not deliver on taste or preparation! Sorry!
