Despite the look of the place, there is good food being served. The fried calamari appetizer is super good, not rubbery, very fresh, but it should not be served with cocktail sauce. We requested marinara sauce instead (which waitress told us was an upcharge) and it was almost the best we'd ever had. The shrimp fra diavolo was very good, and the Chianti they poured was good too. Amazing how great this restaurant is. Best secret in the Capital District. We started with mussels in a red sauce. Great flavor with fresh bread to soak up every bit of the broth. The wife started with Caprese Salad that was the freshest we have ever had. Our entrees were Chicken Milanese and Spaghetti Carbonara. Just great flavor and very large portions. Our first time at LoPorto's...it was an exceptional dining experience! It is a cozy restaurant and reservations are a must. Our friends dined on escargot and seafood Fra Diavolo. My husband and I shared the clams casino, he dined on Veal Saltimbocca and I enjoyed their Veal Sorsese. Our meals were outstanding! Their portions are generous. The food is perfectly seasoned. Our friends absolutely enjoyed their meals. Our veal was nice and tender and the vegetables were so terrific I could picture their recipe belonging to their Nona and passed down to them. My husband truly appreciated that they allowed him to have the potatoes and vegetables with his veal. The staff are friendly and make sure everyone is enjoying their meals and drinks. Having eaten there so often and having enjoyed it so much, I've been hesitant to leave a review. I keep hoping it will fulfill Yogi Berra's prophesy, that "people don't go there anymore, it's too busy". No such luck. Get a reservation. Go. They'll treat you like family. It's really good. LoPortos is a very low key restaurant. Not really noticeable from the street unless you know it's there. By far the best Italian restaurant I've been to, and I've been to a lot. We went prior to a show, not knowing we needed a reservation. Although we didn't have one and they were booked solid, the hostess and the waitress managed to figure it out and got us immediately seated. The portions are enormous- generous isn't a big enough word. Takeaways-go hungry and call for reservations. read more

This was our first time here and the food was amazing. Great selection of Italian dishes and more. Our waitress was great she was cheerful and very helpful when it came down to the menu. She recommended the Veal Sorrentino but we asked if we could substitute chicken which was not listed on the menu but she said no problem. It was delicious. Others in our party order the calamari in a red sauce. They said the calamari was cooked perfectly. One in our party has gluten allergies and when she was ordering our waitress knew immediately that the sauce was not gluten free. The restaurant is located in one of the older buildings across from the old Palace Theatre in Troy. Parking is street parking only, which is tricky. But worth the hassle. read more

The warm fresh out of oven bread was a great start. Ordered Calamari with extra side of marinara sauce as appetizer - the tangy marinara is a must order! Finally got to this restaurant! Kind of an old-school Italian spot, excellent traditional old world food. Had a bottle of wine, the Oysters Rockefeller which was amazing! My husband got the veal I orderesome pasta. The pasta was a little more al dente than I like and they gladly took it back and cooked it more. The best pasta I've ever had. - by far. I was so excited that I forgot to take photos. We ordered carry out although they have a lovely little dining room - very Italian. We called our order in and they told us it would be ready in 35 minutes. And it was. Perfect. We started with the fried calamari, which was lightly coated in batter and served with cocktail sauce and fresh lemon. The calamari was tender and flavorful. The portion was generous and easily served 4 people. I recommend highly. For main course we selected 3 pasta entrees to share: the Shrimp Diabolo, the Pasta Carbonara and the Pasta Bolognese. The meals were served with fresh Parmesan and warm fresh Italian bread. The Diabolo was a delicious spicy and the shrimp were large. The Carbonara was intensely garlicky - and perhaps my favorite. The Bolognese was rich with a tender meat tomato sauce. Each pasta was delicious and the portions generous. We had leftovers for a second meal. I think I'd make the 12 hour trip from Indiana just to come back. So authentic - so delicious. read more

I was visiting my daughter at RPI so I decided to take her and five of her friends out for dinner. She had been complaining about the food at the dorms so she couldn't wait to go out to a restaurant. This is a traditional family run Italian restaurant. The only thing missing was two wise guys sitting in the corner smoking cigars and sipping their expressos. I made last minute reservation and they were able to accommodate our group. They were very patient with us as we took some to get the orders in. At no point we felt rushed. Was told that they do not accept reservations at the bar but to be there at 4:30 or so and there would be no problem with seating. Arrived at the appointed time and there was available seating at the bar only to be told that the seats were reserved. Asked about the no bar reservations and was told that the party called to say they were on the way, obviously blown off for regulars. Crap way to do business, will not be back. This place is fantastic - great food, great service, and a great Italian family vibe. We started with zuppa di clams and extra bread (which is extra delicious, btw) and could have gone home full and satisfied after that. But the dinner salads were fresh and generous. For mains, we had veal sorrentina, linguini with white clam sauce, seafood mugnaia, and spaghetti carbonara. All were delicious, with the super sized portions I have come to expect in any legit Italian restaurant in the Capitol District (pay once, eat twice). The cannoli was freshly stuffed and perfect. The Noble Vines 337 Cabernet was a LOVELY surprise - smooth and full-bodied. This is our new go-to for dine in Italian. Why is this place not packed for lunch? Granted, when I showed up at noon, it was a rainy day. That will always keep some people tied to their desks. But I would brave the rain again just for another plate of those fried mozzarella balls in tomato sauce. It's an appetizer that can eat like an entree. For seven bucks, you get four breaded balls of fresh, milky mozzarella, hot on the outside and gooey on the inside. The perfectly fried coating is flavored not just from the golden bread crumbs, but also the crushed pine nuts in the breading. And the sauce. Oh the sauce. Fortunately, there's a warm basket of light crumbed, and cornmeal crusted Italian bread to mop it up. However, it also comes with a spoon. And it's good enough to eat straight with large tender chunks of tomato, and bright, wilted leaves of fresh basil. All of this comes served on white linen tablecloths, in a delightful old school setting, which is both cozy and a reminder of Troy's less contemporary past. While I didn't try a bowl of pasta, my friend did. No mortal should be served that much food. And it seems like an odd request to ask for a half-order of a twelve dollar pasta dish, but it's tempting. What's probably better is to order one plate of pasta to split with two--maybe three--people. Because the only reason I can think of for people not to come here, is that after a lunch at Lo Porto's, you may need a nap. But that's why God invented coffee. I went for the eggplant parm sandwich, which was served open faced. It too was a monster on the plate. But I ate every comforting bite and enjoyed the heck out of it. The eggplant was fried beautifully. The bread beneath had beautifully charred edges. And the sauce had a hint of green pepper in it, which I really enjoyed, and made it a completely different experience from the fried mozzarella. Did I mention this $10 sandwich was served on a real plate, on a linen tablecloth, at a cozy table, in a charming room, that transported me to another time? If you haven't been for lunch, go. It's perfect for winter, when it doesn't matter if you eat a massive pile of pasta slathered in cream, or deep fried cheese. In fact, winter in Troy was made just for this. Or maybe it's the other way around. Regardless, I'm glad I finally made it in to Lo Porto's. read more
