BEWARE 1 Star - Unsafe Repair, Left Me Stranded I am extremely disappointed with Ted's Garage and have zero confidence in their work. I took my car in only to have spark plugs changed, but co-owner Mike said it was something else, never touched the spark plugs, replaced the thermostat, and charged me $259. Less than three days later, after being told my car was "fine to drive," it left me stranded on the freeway in the middle of traffic. This was dangerous and unacceptable. Mike then told me my engine was completely shot, which turned out to be false. Another reputable mechanic picked up my car from Ted's Garage and fixed it within days after diagnosing the real issue--a leaking water pump into the oil pan. This repair clearly did not fix the problem and the car failed almost immediately. The work should be refunded, as it was still under warranty and left me stranded. I do not trust their diagnosis or repairs and strongly recommend getting a second opinion. Thankfully I had my repairs done elsewhere But Mike refused to refund $259.00 for useless "repair" that failed with 3 days & was still under warranty per Mike himsel. read more

I was a recommended to go to Ted's garage from my friend who's been taking the car there for 20 years. My daughters car would make a noise when she was driving and we took it here and they checked it all out and there was no concern and they did not charge us. I've never heard of such a thing. Usually I have to pay $100 to get something checked at minimum so I was very appreciative that Ted's garage did not charge us. Because of the small gesture I will always take my card there. Stay away from Ted's Garage. I brought my vehicle in because the "engine light" came on (a friend highly recommended Ted). I was told I needed a part replaced for $700. They replaced the part. I paid my bill and as I was driving my vehicle home, the "engine light" came back on. I took the vehicle back to Ted's and was told it needed another replacement part and more work for another $300. I left totally isgusted and drove to another shop who fixed the problem pronto and I haven't had any problems since. So nice and honest! The first time I took my car in, they did some routine maintenance. About a week later, they contacted me and gave me a bit of money back because they said they'd accidentally overcharged me. They really didn't have to do that; I wouldn't've known otherwise, but they clearly wanted to do what was right. I took my car in again yesterday, thinking there might be two major problems with it. They checked it out, called me back and said my car looked great overall, and charged me a whopping $4.53 total (to replace a brake light and prevent future water buildup in the assembly) after all was said and done. It is almost ludicrous to pay such a small amount in this day and age (at an auto repair shop, to boot), but this really happened! Highly recommend! read more

Ted's garage is one of the best shops if not the best Automotive repair shop in Chula Vista. I was told by a great friend in 1998 to take truck there to get a water pump problem repaired. I had taken it to another shop to have the repair done. I was told they put a new one on my truck. I found anti freeze on the ground in my parking spot. I drove over to Ted's with out making an appointment. Ted himself looked at the truck said that the water pump was a rebuild he got me a new water pump from the dealership and changed it out for me he charged me less total cost than I paid the other shop. I have since found out that the shop that I originally went to has gone out of business. I would recommend Ted's Garage in a New York minute as the saying goes. I called first and spoke with Mike. Omgosh he is so nice and comforting. I needed a new radiator and Mike showed me where the leak was coming from and that I needed new one. I also asked for a tune up and Mike said he would check my spark plugs first to verify if really needed tune up. I knew mine were old but it was so refreshing knowing he wasn't trying to just get a bunch of money from me. He did agree, yes my spark plugs were old. The mechanics were so nice. After a smog test debacle at a different shop, and a check engine light, I let my car sit for 8 months....Ted's Garage was recommended and AAA approved, so with a prayer and my credit card, I made an appt. Turns out, it was a dirty MAF...mass air flow sensor....which they cleaned, instructed me to drive the freeway for 30 minutes. I returned and 15min later, it passed, l was legal and on my way!!! Thanks to Mike/Don I saved a $600 repair bill.....In this day and age, CUSTOMER SERVICE, HONESTY, and TRUST are very hard to find!!! Mike and his crew are phenomenal. I wish mechanics were like this everywhere! I was taking a trip from AZ to the beach when my check engine light came on. Mike and his crew did diagnostics and ordered a part that could have possibly solved the issue. They got the part the very next day and unfortunately it didn't fix my issue. Mike gave me a great reference for somebody who could do the internal engine work. The part itself was worth $207, but didn't fix the issue. They sent me to a great shop that could preform the work I needed AND DID NOT CHARGE ME A SINGLE PENNY! They could have at least charged me for diagnostics and their time but they didn't. They were so friendly and transparent. I have struggled in the past as a woman trying to have work done on my car. It was so nice to be treated fairly from the start. Wow Was having issues with my car not charging took it in they repaired it in five minutes change my oil got my timing straightened out fixed my carburetor so it was tuned right and now she's running like a champ.
