I usually bring my Nissan Rogue to this shop for its maintenance work and repairs. They are across the street from my work, so I typically drop it off in the morning and will be ready later that day. I recently took them a project car of mine, my beloved Honda S2000 who we thought was declared dead. Luis said they were willing to check her out and take on this challenge to revive her. I must say they were successful!! They informed me it was the fuel pump and fuel injectors that needed to be replaced. They searched far and wide to find the needed parts, even thought they were more than likely obsolete. I am so grateful to Luis and his team for bringing my car back to life. Since she needed to be smogged, Luis was kind enough to take her to the smog shop next door to have her tested. He called me with the great news that she had passed smog and was ready be picked up. My boyfriend took his car to this shop on August 5th because the timing belt had snapped and damaged parts of the engine. It took approximately a week for Luis to provide a diagnosis. Everything was covered under warranty, so the only expense that was supposed to be paid was the labor. Luis was supposed to provide an update on the car the following week (August 16th-22nd), but he never did. On top of that, the shop NEVER answered the phone whenever we tried to contact them. I went to the shop in person on September 1st to ask for an update. During that visit, Luis lied to my face about two things: He claimed that he had spoken with my boyfriend and his aunt the day before I showed up and had given them an update. This never happened. He told me that the mechanic who works on engines had "hurt his back" on the day he was supposed to work on the car. Despite these excuses, Luis assured me that the car would be ready that Friday or Tuesday because of the Labor Day weekend. That was not the case. Later that week, we received another update stating that the same mechanic who had supposedly "hurt his back" had now "hurt his leg." To make matters worse, we found out that this mechanic actually works at a completely different shop. None of the mechanics who actually work at Luis's shop apparently knew how to properly repair a 2004 Honda, which is absolutely unbelievable to me. My dad, who is a professional mechanic, eventually went to the shop in person to speak with Luis. Luis gave my dad the exact same excuses and lies that he had given us. However, my dad was able to get him to finally have the car completed and ready on September 11th. We also made it very clear to Luis that the labor should not be charged because of how long it took to get the car repaired and the repeated lack of communication and excuses. Overall, this shop was extremely unprofessional. The lack of communication, constant excuses, and misleading information made this entire experience incredibly frustrating. Customers should not have to repeatedly chase a business for updates or be given different stories just to find out what is happening with their vehicle. read more

On Tuesday, February 17th, my husband picked up our 2011 Honda Odyssey from R&L Performance and he paid $2,322.85 for work done. On the 3 mile drive home, the van started smoking and caught fire. The fire department was called and had to put out the fire. The car is a total loss and we are waiting to hear from our adjuster. In the meantime,Luis and his brother came to see the car at our home and have done nothing to help resolve this matter. At first they agreed to make this right, but now they refuse to give us their insurance information so that we can file a claim with their company, they refuse to refund the money we paid for the work they did on the car. They won't pay for a rental car either because we are down a car. They refuse to pay the money for our van, the urgent care visit that my husband had to go to for the burns on his right hand, and the wages for the 3 shifts of work that my husband missed due to this incident. My car was running fine prior to leaving it with Luis at R&L. My husband works for the South Bay Union School District and Luis and R&L Performance work on their trucks. I would surmise that maybe that should be reconsidered. I would not take a car to them in the future. Save yourself the frustration and aggravation. Learn from my experience. read more

Luis is great charismatic guy. I took my 2012 Honda Pilot 7 months ago for timing belt service which belt tensioner and belt was replaced. The job was great with no issues. Two weeks ago it started making a similar noise when I initially took the car to repair. I was all worried about the costs and since it was so long ago I would not be under R&L warrant. Okay, so here's the thing...You know you need work done on your car but unless you know someone who knows someone you will just have to take your chances at some chain auto repair place and pray tha you don't have to use every penny in your bank account to get it out. Once you get in there and they start talking shop, in the back of your mind you wonder..."Are they for real? Or are they just trying to jack me because they know I don't know shite about cars?" And forget it if you're a woman...you might feel intimidated and totally vulnerable but dammit, you gotta get your car fixed right? When I was at R & L's the other day it occurred to me that I had never written a review for them but as good as their service is and as friendly and decent as they are I knew they had to have a string of compliments...not so, I'm the first one!!! Maybe most folks who go there just want to get their cars fixed and don't give a hoot about leaving reviews but here you go....They are in South Chula Vista right off Palomar Ave on the West Side. You hang a right at the light and it is immediately to your left. Yes, it's a divey looking joint to be sure...and yes, it's totally old school Mexican style with junky looking old cars parked all over the place but man oh man...are they some good mechanics. The place is owned by two brothers but in truth I have only dealt with Luis, I think his brother prefers the back end of the business. They have an assortment of very sweet, very quiet sisters who work at the front desk and it's a total family business. Luis is the front man and what a hell of a guy...early 30's, genuinely friendly, reliable and educated about all things that are cars. I have NEVER gotten anything but excellent customer service from them and even my poor hubby who thinks everyone is out to rip you off was happy with them! Example 1: Took in the old Explorer because of some funky, annoying scary, whinning broken sound by the third row seat. Turns out to be a broken fan and Luis tells me "If no one sits back there, you may want to rethink replacing it because it's a $300 piece...no thanks Bro, appreciate the heads up! Example 2: Took in my Ford Focus at the last minute desperate because my signal light was out...talked to Luis, he said, "no worries" and fixed in within 20 minutes. Example 3: Again took the aging Explorer in for a 100K overhaul/checkup and although Luis quoted me a certain price for the whole shebang but it ended being a couple hundred dollars less because he found out that a couple of things didn't need to changed. If you want patronize a family run business where you can become a regular, really trust the mechanics and know that you will always get the straight truth and a decent price...give your business to these gentlemen...and if you're a girl...never hesitate to drop by..they treat everyone wonderfully...give em a shot! read more

Driving around running my errands, my car starts to shake. Oh no! Did I not change the oil? What's wrong now? I remember this happening when I was around Knots Berry Farm in Orange County so I go to O'Reilly to get the code blinking tell me what's going on. I'm glad this baby can communicate with me unlike boyfriends or real babies but I'm not about to shell out $65 for a check engine light diagnosis. Those are bogus! So they tell me I've got a #2 misfiring! They quote me $149.99 for the part (ignition coil & spark plug). I called up the mechanic I used to go to but remember how a $30 oil change turned into an $890 repair with the radiator coolant leaking and something else and ironically the owner was on the phone with another customer for the same exact problems on her vehicle that I thought he was talking to me... soooooo, that didn't sit well with me! I remember my friend raving about the same thing and he was the one that told me about them so now he found this family and I hear nothing but good praises about them! So I find them west of Palomar Exit next door to Valero gas station. They looked busy. I told him what was going on. If I hadn't just gotten my stiletto nails done so long I probably could have fixed it myself. He accommodated me and within 40 minutes of arriving, he was done! He charged me $40 for labor and $99 + tax for the part! So I got a deal!! I was so grateful to their expediency and quality of friendly service. They remembered my friend and his wife who recommended them to me with flying colors and from now on, this family run station is my go to!! They are so nice, honest, friendly and sincere! Great auto mechanic. Luis has worked on my family's cars for years and I've found him to be very honest and very inexpensive. I've referred a few people to him over the years and they've consistently performed well on my friend's cars. On the rare occassion where I've had to take a car back to him for repeat issues even a month after he performed the work he fixed everything for free. I don't recommend these guys for specialty cars (he tried a little work on my BMW but wasn't equipped with the special tools it needs), but does awesome work on domestic, japanese cars, etc. read more

Bob is a great mechanic with a friendly and caring personality. If you need any brake or suspension work done, Bob is the man! Recently, my CEL kept turning on and off on my 2004 Honda Accord coupe due to a bad repair experience I had with Fuller Honda (see my review on Fuller Honda). I took my car to R&L to get it diagnosed and fixed. Luis did a great job diagnosing and fixing the problem by cleaning the intake manifold to get rid of the gunk that had accumulated from driving my car 178K miles. Bob & Luis are very honest and knowledgeable mechanics. They have excellent customer service skills! I highly recommend R&L if you are looking for good mechanics to satisfy your automotive needs. In addition, if you need a smog certification, next door is a smog certification center and they also do great work. I've been coming here for a a few years now and I must say these guys are always willing to go above and beyond. I recently left my car for an oil change and it turns out my alternator was faulty but still under warranty. I was heading out on a family vacation and had no choice but to ask if I could leave my car there for a few days while I figure out the warranty info with AutoZone. Long story short, I ended up getting the run around and the mechanic had to run around all over town until they finally gave him the replacement part to finish the repair. All of this while I was on vacation. Not once did these guys make me feel stressed out or bad about what was happening they reassured me not to worry and they gave me the keys with a smile like always when I finally went to pick it up. Finally I called up a buddy who grew up in San Diego and recommended this place, (a place he said his aunt has been going to for decades). My 2005 Nissan Armada needed AC work; it was just blowing warm air. I walked-in yesterday and Luis, a very nice person, explained how he is going to diagnose the issue. As promised, around noon-time, an employee called me about the problem and ask for authorization to repair, which I gladly gave. They promised that the repair (replacement of leaking condenser) should be done by 5:30 PM. They delivered! In addition, I knew I needed an oil change but did not ask for it. However, when I arrived to pick-up the car I was told to consider having the oil change done because it looked pretty bad. Understandably so; the last oil change was from 6 months ago. Luis even recommended the most affordable and the best type of oil to use for the car. Even though I normally and unnecessarily use full synthetic oil, he recommended otherwise. THIS SHOP APPEARS TO DO A GREAT WORK WITHOUT PUTTING A HUGE WHOLE IN YOUR WALLET! I found a shop that I will go back to for future repairs. read more

I needed a battery replacement because my AC Delco battery I bought 2 years ago was done. I couldn't get it to charge up with a jump start. My battery had a 5 year warranty, but unfortunately the shop that I originally bought it from, closed down. I looked at the AC Delco website and found that R&L was an official dealer. I called them up and asked the female who answered if I can exchange my warrantied battery there because the original store I bought if from closed down. The female politely asked for the model number and asked if I had the receipt. I told her the number and she told me to come on down. I drove to the shop which is located on Palomar St near Bay Blvd. I walked in with the battery and she greeted me and asked if I had just called her. I told her that was me. She typed in the original date of purchase and AC Delco said I missed the free battery exchange by a few months. I had to pay a prorated price of 50 dollars. The male mechanic there politely grabbed the replacement battery and thanked me for coming by. I didn't get any attitude that i was being an inconvenience to them. They all seemed to have positive attitudes with smiles. When I was in there they even greeted a repeat customer with a big welcome back. I was impressed by this independent shop. I think if when I have future mechanical problems, I will give R&L a visit. read more

Absolutely love this place! I originally thought I had to replace my rotor and brake pads but Luis quickly informed me that my real issue were my rusty calipers. Unlike most auto shops, I didn't feel pressured to get them changed (since it's another expense) and I was able to talk it over with my boyfriend-they were so patient and understanding. But they were very informative and answered all questions I had! I ended up getting my calipers replaced along with my rotors and brake pads and my car runs SO MUCH BETTER! I love this shop and how professional and friendly they are! They also helped me a lot with the cost because I wasn't trying to spend too much money considering the fact that I didn't know I had an issue with my calipers but like I said, they really worked with me on a price and gave me an AWESOME DEAL!
