Pretty Good but Beware - Cash Only Interesting hole in the wall. Looks like a Southern or Deep South Restaurant/bar from the 60 or 70's. Walk in and seat yourself with booths on the left, a long lunch counter on the right and it leads to a more traditional dining area in the back. My server was there shortly and gave me a menu while she took my drink order. Keep in mind that there was only one server for the entire restaurant. Not a large menu but focused on normal burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches although the Friday Special was Fish. Been awhile since I've had a BLT but that appealed to me so I ordered that and tater tots as a side. She came back in about 5 minutes to ask if I wanted Mayo on the Sandwich to which I answered yes. Another 5 minutes and here came my lunch. To me, the BLT along with a Tomato Sandwich made with a tomato fresh off the vine are the two epitomes of great sandwiches. My two favorites. To be honest, I was expected somewhat of a let down due to tomatoes on the BLT being out of season but surprise,.. I was pleasantly surprised. The sandwich was great and the certainly did not skimp on the bacon. Very good sandwich in a reasonable amount of time Only downside to the whole meal, I never did get a fork to eat my tater tots with but in this case, tater tots became finger food. Interesting experience and I will be back but I have to plan it when I have cash on hand. Once again, I find myself in the circumstance of having been lured to a burger joint by positive reviews only to find that the food is just not very good. I am loath to impugn the reviews of other Yelpers, but I don't know what they are tasting. Here is my experience: I ordered a cheeseburger and hot dog, both all the way. When I took a bite of the burger, the waterfall of slaw liquid that flowed out was shocking. By the time I was even half done, the bun was so soggy it induced a gag reflex. I will say that the burger patty was nice sized, juicy, and had a good (but not great) taste. As for the hot dog, the first bite overwhelmed me with an odd chemical flavor. I attempted to locate the source, but when sampled separately, the dog, chili, and slaw were ok tasting. But together they tasted weird. Strange, but I just don't know how else to explain it. The sweet tea was among the worst I've had. I've had better sweet tea in Miami, and believe me, Miami is a place where sweet tea is generally not known. It was not sweet enough and had barely detectable tea flavor, as if one small tea bag was used for an entire vat of tea. Crinkle fries were good, for what that's worth. Dark inside, it is not a cheerful place at all. The server was very nice but was flying solo and was completely overwhelmed. I had to go find my own Texas Pete and never could get more napkins--the few I was offered suffered a quick death at the hands of the sloppy burger. Go elsewhere. You enter. You breathe. You die a little inside. Because honestly the fats and cholesterol run so thick in this gem of true down-home southern cookin' that the smell alone will give you five heart attacks before your butt hits the chair. I'm not sure why they call this [dumpster] dive The Lunch Box. It could be because they've got all of maybe two windows in the whole place. This is the epitome of dives. The dive to end all dives. A "high" dive into the deepest end, if you will. It's located somewhere. You need a native Indian trail guide to find it. Even then he'll leave you at the door proclaiming "I go no further." It's really in the sticks and frequented by only the grungiest of back road truckers and bikers. So why on EARTH would he give it four stars you ask? The restaurant is spread into the cavernous space of some old building I have no idea what it was before this. The lights are kept low inside and really all you have to eat with is the glow of sun through a couple frosted windows on one side. On the outside you feel almost a nervous fear about going in because there's no telling what's on the other side of that door. The staff is a wonderful and friendly bunch. They are, contrary to the looks of the joint, very helpful and down to Earth. In the back corner sits a pool table covered and waiting for the nights when there's no work in the morning. A bar is the only minimal divide between the kitchen itself and the rest of the room. Above it is plastered a sign promising Good Food, Cold Beer and Good Times. (Checks are paid cash only by the way.) I donno about the beer and the times but the food was indeed good. It was standard southern by all means. Burgers, meat patties, fries and tots lathered graciously with fixins and all fried in pools of grease. I'd argue your food likely comes out of the kitchen greasier than it was going in. The selling point: country style steak. There are only a few places out there that have it and The Lunch Box is one of the only that does it right like it was made at home by mom. But be warned, you will not leave here feeling accomplished in the realm of all foodies. The real win here is the bit of culture you will find nowhere else. read more

Stop here and eat!!! I have been CRAVING their cheeseburger every day since I stopped. I am a VERY seasoned home made diner burger eater. This place makes 'em! I tried calling the phone number to be sure it was still open, the phone number shown was disconnected. Because there were recent reviews I stopped anyway. So glad I did! Guess they serve sandwiches until 5, get there before then. I have been past this little place so many times and have said "I need to go there". Today was that day, and OMGoodness it was great. The staff was so friendly and on top of it. The fish plate was great. Prices are very reasonable. It is an older building and the inside is a little on the dark side but they made you feel so welcome. In my first review I urge people to visit the lunchbox and said that you would not be disappointed. I guess that's not true. It wasn't for a year till I got to return and there's not many things that can bring a five star review down to a one star but Man oh man was I disappointed! Wow I still like the atmosphere, the perfect sweet tea and the wonderfully deep-fried roll, what happen next close me to actually get up and walk out. I ordered the same mushroom Swiss burger that I raved about last time however as soon as the waitress said it in front of me I was overwhelmed with a waft of mold and spoiled food. It was without a doubt the mushrooms. I don't know how the person cooking this in back or carrying it out front to serve could not smell that (or didn't care) but that's the kind of thing that can kill people! I stumbled across this gem while looking for something other than just a sandwich. The special of the day was hamburger steak with brown gravy, stewed potatoes (oh, yes), green beans and corn. Then for the bread I had the fried yeast roll. It was absolutely wonderful. All of this including the drink for $7.50.
