The moment we stepped inside the bakery, we were greeted right away. Staff were fast and friendly. Staff help assorted us with any questions we had. Bought some foods to try. I tried the cold cut banh mi. It was good. Bread was crispy and lots of filling. Bought some taro, white bean, black bean, corn desserts (Che) and jelly to try. All were delicious especially on a hot day. Bought some pastries which were limited at the end of the day. Got some chaud pork with onion, crawfish pie, meat pie, baked bao which all had great pastry taste, but the filling wasn't the greatest for me I guess. So, I did come back another day and got some pate chaud with bbq pork. Now that was delicious to my taste buds! I tried the green combo bánh bao and that was delicious as well!

For me, it's way too sweet, although that can be said of many other popular king cakes....so to each their own. I do appreciate the strong cinnamon flavor and tender crumb. But I wouldn't wait in line for it. Still, Dong Phuong is one of the truly iconic king cakes of New Orleans as it looks different than anything else on the market. I was very happy to try it and thankful for the family friend who stood in line to get one.

I had been to New Orleans since 1987 to attend JazzFest until my near death and rebirth in 1999…read morewith Celiac disease about 6-7 times. After I was diagnosed with Gluten Intolerance as a foodie I thought my culinary life was over and one of the many, but not only joys, of going to Nola is the food. I was reluctant to go and then a bit later 20 years ago Katrina hit this great city. When I did return my reluctance of going due to my food restrictions was born out, but the fact that the people in New Orleans fry everything, including water. Besides jambalaya and some fresh fish, I couldn't eat anything. However, due to a friend who was born in New Orleans, grew up in New Orleans and lives half of the year there with her family involved in the restaurant business, Pat introduced me for a number of chefs and one in particular, Michael Gulotta, who modified dishes or even made me specially dishes that were gluten free. Every time I went to New Orleans, I tried to go to his two Vietnamese Cajun restaurants, MoPho and Maypop. Michael Gulotta, chef-owner at Mopho and Maypop was born and raised in New Orleans. Michael began cooking in local restaurants at a young age. After graduating from the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute, he joined the newly opened Restaurant August. Gulotta then took leave to train in the Italian Riviera and Germany's Black Forest. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Michael returned home to help rebuild and assist with August's re-opening. He was named chef de cuisine in 2007 and led the award-winning kitchen for six years, while establishing relationships with local farmers and purveyors. He opened his first restaurant, MOPHO, in January of 2014 with his brother, Jeffrey Gulotta, and high-school friend, Jeffrey Bybee. Located in New Orleans' Mid City, MOPHO was a true neighborhood restaurant and a destination for Southeast Asian inspired cuisine utilizing the Louisiana pantry. In its first year MOPHO was nominated for America's Best New Restaurant by Bon Appétit magazine and named Restaurant of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. In 2016 Michael was named one of Top 30 Chefs to Watch in the nation by Plate Magazine, A New Orleans Rising Star by Starchefs, a Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine, and Chef of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. In 2017, his team opened its second full-service restaurant, Maypop, in the Central Business District of New Orleans. Maypop was named a Top 5 Best New Restaurant by The Times Picayune, A Best New Restaurant by New Orleans Magazine, a New Orleans Top 20 Restaurants by Condé Nast Traveler, and a New Orleans' Top Ten Restaurants for 2019, by Brett Anderson. Michael has also been a semifinalist for The James Beard Awards Best Chef South for the past four years. Most recently, his team opened a second MOPHO location in the new Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. On my trip to New Orleans this past May, I was saddened to learn that Michael was closing MoPho and Maypop, casualties of the so difficult business of owning a restaurant I know all too well. After JazzFest one evening on MoPho's second to last day, Pat and I went to pay our respects and I got to thank Michael for his kindness showing me there was culinary life after my diagnosis not only at his restaurant but when he catered the main stage at JazzFest, but he also introduced me to more fusion possibilities which I have incorporated in some of the food I make. On the last day of Maypop, my brother Jeff and I dined at Maypop, Michael's more upscale joint which served delicious food and not to be undone, after both closed on that Sunday in May, I saw the MoPho at the airport right in front of my terminal to fly home and I got the greatest wings on the planet to fly home with: CRISPY CHICKEN WINGS WITH NUOC MAM CARAMEL. I have no idea what exactly that is except Cajun chicken spices with a Vietnamese caramel sauce that is unparalleled in it's flavor, bite and marriage of cultures that was so good Pat would always ask for more on the side. I'm sure Michael will get back in the game at some point but I write this with gratitude to Pat for introducing me to this great Chef and to Chef Gulotta for taking the time to show me what I could eat and what modifications he could make to his food for me.

That was so kind, and it moved me. Many "social" experiences feel so impersonal and isolated now; and I've always felt that making, eating, and sharing food should not feel that way, and, at Beignets & More, walking into the space feels humanizing, like you've been welcomed to a family meal, even if you're on your own. My friend and I both had pots of green tea and ordered pho, which came out within 10 minutes. I have wheat/gluten allergies and confirmed that the pho here is gluten free. The brisket pho was great, and I'll definitely come back to try the chicken, rare steak, and veggie--or to get a big container of their terrific broth to go when I'm feeling a cold coming on. (I'm sure other menu items are worth trying too!) Both the son and his dad came around during our meal to gently ask "everything is good?" I'll be here often as long as I live in New Orleans. -- Bonuses: In the table caddy with hoisin sauce, sriracha, napkins, and spoons, there are also real chopsticks to use--not the wooden, to-go ones many restaurants offer even when you're dining in. Parking at the strip mall is easy.

My first visit I enjoyed a Vietnamese iced coffee (espresso and condensed milk) and beignets, which were so delicious. You have a choice of three regular beignets that are huge, or nine mini beignets that remind me of funnel cake! I have returned for another cup of coffee and well as their chargrilled shrimp Vietnamese poboy and rare round eye or eye round pho. The poboy is absolutely wonderful and the pho was delicious. This will be my go to at times when I wanted a shrimp poboy, great substitute for the fried ones. You can dine in or take out. The owners are so nice and definitely know their regulars. I ordered the combination plate, and it was worth every penny with generous portions and great variety. The building itself is small and tucked away in a shopping center, but it was packed to the brim when we visited, I can absolutely see why it's such a popular spot. Our waitress was very helpful and kind; although she seemed quite busy and a bit less attentive at times, she came by as much as she could. Overall, the food alone makes this place a must-visit, and I'll definitely be back.

Their success in the form of local accolades are never-ending, along with countless high ratings across several platforms. My first impression was slightly underwhelming but I have no regrets and I certainly appreciate the effort. The place is family run and located in a strip mall with a handful of tables with a busy crowd of folks at any point of the week. There are a handful of group-friendly tables inside, along with a couple of tables outside. I came during their lunch rush, which resulted in a bit of a wait. When finally seated, I admired the hordes of staff going in and out of the kitchen, along with the waitresses handling groups of all sizes with ease. I ordered a good variety of food to make sure I didn't miss much. In addition to a combination pho dac biet ($17), bo vien ($14) and pho ga with banh mi combo ($18), I also ordered their coconut butterfly shrimp ($7), off menu crispy noodle bird's nest ($16.50), and a plate of fries ($5) for good measure. I noticed a lot of the food skewed on the sweeter side. The pho broth was good overall, but was still a tinge sweet. I was hoping for heartier cuts of the tendon and brisket, but it was a modest portion at best. The sweetness also applied to the sauce in the crispy bird's nest noodle, which reminded me of something I'd find in an American Chinese spot with the stir fry and overall presentation. While I was happy with the bread of the banh mi, the spicy mayo spread (?) threw me off a bit. I was hoping for pate and butter, but that may have to be a request-onyl thing. I started to realize that from the majority of the patrons, the semi-high prices, and the description-first format of the menu (#1), that it's likely that the place was really molding to the westernized palate. It makes sense in a place like Covington, which is not the same Vietnamese scene as say Houston. It also makes sense to have some non- Viet staff to make the place as approachable as possible. And regarding the staff, they were the best part of the experience. Everyone was incredibly friendly and did a good job of keeping the place clean and orderly (#2), while making sure everyone left with a smile on their face. They've clearly done an outstanding job since their start a handful of years ago. I think for folks who are clearly more adept in Vietnamese cuisine, should ensure they know what they're getting into prior to taking the leap. I would never rule out of a future return, but I think I'd have to already be in Covington and to make sure to taper my expectations. __________ (#1) "Vietnamese po-boy" for banh mi, "chunky beef" for bo luc lac, etc (#2) Especially the bathrooms. Only thing missing are paper towels.
