The dogs get a bath, the bathroom gets a bath, the washing machine gets a workout and I need an entire day to recover after. Team VP drove to Hillsdale to pick up the newest team VP member at the Hillsdale Humane Society yesterday and I decided to find a dog wash that was located on our way home so we could avoid the mess created when a new dog team member moves in. I found Doggie Spa and Play Care online and called ahead to make sure their hours and terms listed online still applied. Everything checked out. We knew we would need longer then 30 minutes ($19 for the first 30 minutes), so I asked about an extended time and was told it was $5 more - no problem. We arrived on Wednesday at around 3:30 p.m. and were checked in about one minute. The process was a two page form that required general information including name, address, vet name, immunization information, etc. Easy stuff. The grooming room was really big and had two tubs, two tables, and two dryers. They also provide everything needed including towels, shampoo, nail clippers, brushes, and combs. We brought our own tools because we have a preference for our gear that we have been using to groom our other Aussie, but having everything provided for someone who does not own expensive tools is very nice. We were able to thin out Clementine's coat and not have to worry about cleaning up her hair, we brushed her coat with both an undercoat rake and comb and just let the hair fall on the floor without thinking about who was going to pick it all up, and we did not have to think about cleaning out the tub after her much needed bath. (The elevated tubs are amazing with sprayers that get under heavy undercoats and easy to control water temperatures.) Mr. MVP transferred Clem to the table and we used the dryer, which made quick work of Clementine's heavy coat, which means we did not need to use 15 towels. We were able to clip her nails and with the help of staff we even learned how to clip (all of our dogs have always had black nails, but Clementine has white nails) Clem's nails correctly. On our way out I picked up a new bottle of organic oatmeal shampoo and we paid $36 for shampoo and bath and headed home for a short 30 minute drive. Obviously it's not the most convenient trip to Kalamazoo, but it's only 30 minutes and when both of our Aussies need a bath in the future we will be making the trip because it surely beats having to spend an entire day cleaning up hair, cleaning the bathtub and doing the laundry at home.

I specifically said, "Please do not groom him like a poodle". When I came to pick him up, they had used a clipper and shaved him down to his skin. There were niches from clipping too close to the skin and I found dried blood. My pooch wouldn't let me pick him up for five days. It was a terrible experience. I will never go back.

We called and luckily there was a canceled appointment the next day and they fit us in. Their covid19 protocol was standard for vets these days. We got there, parked and called them, and they brought out paperwork since we are a new patient. Came back out and grabbed our pup. The vet called me not too long after and had a pretty detailed conversation about all the issues she saw and helped do an ear flush for the infection, added extra allergy meds due to inflammation, and recommended antibiotics. Then they brought our baby back out. The cashier called to check us out and we paid over the phone. Then they brought our receipt and meds out. Overall, easy, professional and good experience. Highly recommend whether you live in the area or are traveling with your pup from out of town.

PSA: Northwest Veterinary Clinic…read more I was a loyal client of Northwest Veterinary Clinic -- until I discovered they were listed on PublicSquare, a platform where businesses must sign a values pledge aligning with far-right ideology and anti-DEI messaging. In April, I emailed the clinic to ask a simple question: Did you knowingly sign this pledge? I hadn't yet seen their reply when I called today about a sudden concern with my dog. I was transferred, and the phone was answered: "This is Amber, where do you want your records sent?" I was caught off guard -- I hadn't even mentioned changing providers. I clarified that I was calling about my dog, and Amber replied, "You were sent an email." Still confused (as it had been three months since I reached out), I said I wasn't sure what she was referring to. Then it clicked. I said, "Oh -- is this about the PublicSquare listing? I haven't read the email yet, so are you confirming you knowingly agreed to that pledge?" Amber did not confirm. Instead, she said I had "made accusations" and that "we're not a good fit." She refused to answer whether or not they signed the values pledge. I later read the email, which included this line: "It's none of your damn business." Let's be clear: I never said I was cutting ties -- they made that decision for me without discussion. They refused to clarify or deny their involvement in the platform. They responded to a respectful question with hostility, deflection, and zero concern for my pet. If you value inclusion, transparency, and basic professionalism -- take your business elsewhere. Because it's clear: they've already decided who they do and don't want as clients.

This has less to do with them and more to do with the current and future state of veterinary medicine. I am an old man shouting at clouds. When I was young I went to Dr. Gordon. He lived and worked on Gordon road, a road named after his family. I doubt Dr. Gordon went to formal vetrinary school. My guess is someone handed him a pair of rusty tin snips and told him to caterate that bull. A few hundred times later and the locals called him a vet. Dr. Gordon did a fine job. He gave all animals the same shot of the same medicine, with the same needle, out of a big glass jar. I am not sure what was in the jar. I am not sure Dr. Gordan knew what was in the jar. I think the word Medicine was hand written in sharpie on the glass jar. Animals lived and died just like today, but he only charged ten or twenty dollars for his services. The Whelanns graduated from MSU after 8 to 12 years of schooling. This schooling cost about $60,000 a year plus the income they lost while in school. Over the course of aproximatly 10 years the actual economic cost of their education is well north of a million dollars per vetrinarian. To justify the over two million dollar expenditure they need to earn at least a premium of 10% of that, or $200,000 a year just to pay the student loans on that capital expenditure. They also bought the Northwest Vetrinary Clinic book of business as well as the buildings and property. They also have to pay what I estimate to be a staff of 6 or so full time employees. They use the best couriers and the best labs to do the best diagnostic tests in the area, They would also like to earn a reasonable and fair living. I generally see only one customer car out front every time I drive by. Think about that. One single customer bearing the brunt of all those amortized costs. Is it any wonder a vet visit costs $1000 a pop? Two pets and you are looking at $2000 for a 15 minute visit. I am fairly rich and I have cut way back on vetrinary care for my pets. My dogs still live 13 years of very happy healthy living, with or with out vetrinary care, like they always have. Recently people have been turning in their pets to animal kill shelters in record numbers because of the high cost of vetrinary care. Is it really better for most pets to be neglected or killed so that the pets of the very rich get incredibly outstanding vetrinary care? Once again the Whelan's are wonderful vets. I attended a special event at NPH and was very impressed! The grounds are lovely and well kept, and…read morethe facility is laid out very well and is exceptionally clean. They have a nice indoor arena which has an open plan with the barn so you can see the people and horses in their stalls when you're riding. The arena walls are safe and flat, not the kind you get your leg caught on if your horse runs you into the wall. The footing was very nice and clearly dragged frequently. The have a nice heated observation room, clean bathroom and heated very large tack room. The people who owned the barn were very kind and welcoming and the boarders were nice and seemed close with each other. They have many beautiful horses and seemed to focus on western disciplines as would be expected for the stock horses they specialize in. I can't wait to return!
