One of my all time favorite places to spend a couple of hours. This is one of the best tobacco shops I have been to in California. There is another great place in Sonoma County (Squire's). This place has a great selection, a really awesome staff, tons of cigars, many I can't find other places - and, a huge selection of humidors, lighters etc. The prices are reasonable considering you are in Marin County California and their smokes are loaded with taxes (Not under any tobacco shops control). They have a great area to sit outside with a spectacular view of Mt. Tam (not to mention the Ferraris getting test driven about every half hour from the nearby dealership). I started going to Telford's Pipe and Cigar when I turned 18 (2010). I got into pipe smoking with my grandfather who had passed away several years later, and the hobby continued as a way to keep a part of him with me. Telford's is the only place that I have well and truly enjoyed my experience. Both in sitting for a relaxed smoke, as well as shopping for a new, unique pipe or browsing their wares which are extraordinarily diverse. I make it a point to stop by Telford's prior to any deployments I head out on, and make sure Barney Martin is the only salesman to assist me. I rarely know what I'm looking for when entering the shop, but he takes the time to listen to what I think I need or want, to which he will make multiple recommendations until I know what I want. I have never left the store without some type of purchase, and no matter where I am around the globe, I will continue to use Telford's. I am unsure if they offer global shipping, but if I can order from Telford's while in a combat zone, I will forever be a happy customer. read more

Excellent Selection! I went in here a little hesitant about what I wanted and I am by no means a cigar expert. The staff here was really helpful and helped me narrow down what I wanted. I certainly enjoyed the cigars I bought. This place is very nice and is devoted to smoking (hard to believe in this overly PC bay area). They have an indoor smoking area. I think you have to join to smoke there, but it looked very plush and if I didnt live so far away I would consider it. They also have a really nice area in front for smoking with chairs and tables and benches. Over all it was a great experience and I will come back here when I am in town. read more

Best trip to a tobacconist ever and my new favorite place. Decided to swing by and see how their selection of pipe tobaccos stood up and was stunned at the range of choices and the reasonable (for California) prices. Not only that, but Barney (who helped me) was a walking encyclopedia of tobacco trivia, blend knowledge and overall opinions. If you're put off by opinionated people he might rub you a bit but I found him delightfully open and not shy in the least. I spent close to two hours just listening and learning from him and am already looking forward to my next trip. He picked up on my likes and dislikes very quickly, steered me away from stuff that in his opinion I would probably hate and made several very good recommendations for blends to try. In addition, he shared a bowlful of his private blended stock with me (that he blends for his own consumption) which was a subtle VaPer that didn't beat you over the head with the Perique, a blend that I would happily buy if he were to sell it. Their cigar selection was extensive and varied with a good representation of regions, blends and price range and if you suffer at all from PAD (pipe acquisition disorder) you should probably stay away from the large wall of beautiful pipes. NOT a head shop, not a vape shop, a real honest-to-God tobacconist who caters to adult tastes and sensibilities. Definitely enjoyed my visit! read more

Outstanding selection, decent prices, and easily the largest and most knowledgeable tobacco shop in the Bay Area. It's worth noting that the people here won't please everyone, as Mrs. Telford seems to employ people who are a little nerdy and old-fashioned about their tobacco. This is a good thing in my eyes because you can really hone in on what you want here, be it uncommon cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, even a small selection of shisha. But know what you're looking for, and expect a little old fashioned hard sell on their social events and mailing list if you are into the more esoteric things. I used to be much more of a cigar smoker and found that a good reading pipe is a much more cost-effective and reliable way to smoke. So while I can't comment on the cigars outside of their gigantic selection, I have to call out their 40-some blends of pipe tobacco as truly outstanding. You can have a sweet, mellow smoke or a Latakia-heavy blend for the smokers who can out-grizzle Tom Skerritt. read more

My humidor needed some help with a new digital hygrometer and some other accessories. They have a huge selection of accessories and of course, cigars. They carried some brands you can't get off the web which is great. They have two HUGE walls filled with cigars. A cigar Mecca. The staff is super attentive, friendly, and very helpful. The *only* reason I gave it 4 stars is that the air circulation needs some help. I know, I know, it's tobacco store, but it's not a bar either. Most modern stores and lounges have done a quite a bit to improve this as the second hand smoke does interfere with the flavor of your $10 - $30 stogy. A haven of tranquility in an angry world. You can smoke there! Believe it or not, you can actually walk into this public building and light a cigar, pipe, or cigarette and sit down and enjoy the pleasure of tobacco without anyone yelling at you, sneering at you, or arresting you for doing so. In fact, the owners and staff encourage it. They will even help you select the best product for your respite from the world of the naysayers, puritans, and anti-tobacco fascists; and then invite you to have a seat either inside at one of the several tables set about among the cigar humidors, or in one the rocking chairs on the patio. And the selection of tobacco products and related appurtenances is outstanding. The cigars are all properly humidified and openly displayed in elegant cabinetry for easy selection. And if you don't know what you want, the staff is eager to help; and they are all extremely knowledgeable about the products. When I was last there a young man was buying his first pipe and the salesman showed him how to properly fill the bowl, light the tobacco, offered tips on keeping it lit, and then showed him how to clean his new pipe when he finished smoking it. That's the kind of service you don't find very often these days. And Telford's is the kind of smoke shop that is rapidly being legislated or taxed out of existence, but for now it is a treasured haven for anyone who enjoys a good smoke. read more

I've been in here a few times with experiences ranging from 'OK' to 'really bad'. The last time I stopped in will be the last time I stop in. I find it really frustrating when I'm in a retail environment and the numerous employees treat me like I'm not welcome there. When I went in, there were three people standing behind the counter and I had to ask twice to get someone to unlock the case to show me a pipe. Then, when I wanted to see one in a different case, he gave me a heavy sigh before he made a big production of locking the first one back up in the case and walking over to the next one. Seriously? I'm the only person in the store, there are three of you there and you're going to treat me like you're doing me a favor by selling me your heavily marked-up pipe? But wait, it gets even better. I decide on a pipe, which I hadn't seen anywhere else, (good selection, which is why they get two stars instead of one and why I spent money there in spite of being treated like a fart at a garden party,) and as the unpleasant man is ringing me up, I see a tamper in the case and ask to see it. His response was, "You don't want that." Um, Ok, then. I guess I don't. I'm not impressed. Update: Went in last week because we were passing by, traffic was bad and we thought, "What the heck? Lets get some cigars." The same guy who had been unpleasant last time was working at the pipe counter and was, no surprise, unpleasant again. Seriously, how hard is it to memorize the words, "Hi. How are you today?" The visit was saved by the owner, Brian, who came out of the back and was really very pleasant and helpful. He showed me a few pipes and offered to give me a call when new stock came in. He was definitely nice enough to earn another star, but the guy he had working the pipe counter is still enough of a pill to keep it at three. read more

Best selection I have ever seen in a cigar shop! I have been smoking cigars for years and this place takes the cake for awesome places to be an aficionado! The specialize in rare and hard to find cigars, with some that date back to the 50's, so cool! The staff is also extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. They dont beat around the bush at all, the tell you how they really feel about the cigars and dont try to sell you based on price but based on what you individual needs and tastes are. When I first go to a cigar shop I always try to find something new and exciting and Telfords was filled with it! Scott, the manager, helped me to find 3 well balanced medium cigars all of which I sincerely enjoyed. Beyond the amazing selection and knowledgeable staff I love the feel of this place. It is set up like a real cigar lounge should be with big comfy chairs, a nice patio, and no gimmicky crap like a head shop would have. Brian Telford used to run a quality cigar shop and lounge. Unfortunately finding a properly humidified cigar has become a challenge here. Not an isolated problem...I spent a good amount of time finally finding something marginally acceptable. No lack of selection, including some of the best labels...but their quality has been squandered as they dry out in the "humidor" cabinets (and the wrapper cracks while being smoked). The salesman who "assisted" me was clueless about cigars. A substandard experience from start to finish (although they do have nice chairs for those who choose the store's ambiance to that of a private club...or jazz and a brandy on one's deck at home). This lack of concientious attention to the basics reinforces why I usually purchase a box of Cohiba or La Gloria Cubana from www.jrcigars.com at a fraction of the price, better quality (even through the mail) and I am ensured I have a properly aged and humidified cigar. read more

You walk into this place and it is a MANS shop. It's nice to go to a shop that's there's just as many pipes as cigars. When I went in I asked about their selection of pipe tobacco and was shown an amazing selection. They also had a huge selection of pipes of every material, shape, size. It's nice because I was able to smoke a small sample. I ended up finding this tobacco that is one of their own blends of dark tobacco and the smoke tasted of blueberries. It was hypnotic. I enjoyed that bowl walking around the store. Owner and staff are very friendly. They even took a look at my pipe and appreciated the Peterson I have. It is nice to not be a lonely pipe smoker. I went there with two friends in search of cigar boxes to use for collage art. I had been there previously and knew it was a great place to choose from many shapes and styles of cigar boxes. The owner was apparently having a bad day and seemed disturbed that we were making various piles of boxes and taking some time to figure out our purchase, but it all turned out okay. We did end up getting some great boxes. I had a moment to look in the display cases and it turns out they have some beautiful antique boxes and various smoking accoutrements seemed worthy of a museum. The best pipe, tobacco & cigar store in the North Bay. I've only been there a couple of times in the last several years, but they have the best selection of them all. Telford's has pipes & cigars that no one else in the area has. Every time I go in, it's like being a kid in a candy store. There's too many tins of long, thin cigars I like to smoke. I could easily spend 100's of dollars on pipes that I'd love to add to my collection. Their aromatic tobacco's are also some of my favorites. I've even purchased some used pipes that aren't made any more that I used to have before. The prices here aren't cheap, but that's partially due to the high tobacco taxes that california keeps raising. They even have some hard to find used German student pipes, of various shapes & sizes for $125. You can still buy new ones, much smaller, in Germany for half that. read more

When I picked out the humidor I wanted they were more than happy to recommend some cigars based on the type of cigars I like to smoke. This place is a world class smoke shop. Others I've been to around the Bay Area are either substantially limited in their options or seem kind of run down (or a combination of the two). Telford's, on the other hand, has a great selection of cigars and tobacco from all over the world and can fit anyone's budget. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The best part is all of the staff members have their own preferences, so it's not like you're being pressured into anything specific. They are also very laid back, and while there to assist in a heartbeat, they'll always let you look around and explore. They have a wonderful front porch with ample seating for smoking, as well as an indoor lounge. For those that previously reviewed and said they've had bad experiences with the staff, I will say it's not the type of place you'd want to walk into timidly. You should have the ability to express yourself, even if that means telling them you have no idea what you're doing.
