The two gentlemen working the day I visited were super friendly, helpful, and quite knowledgeable (apologies for forgetting your names). So seriously, this is 5 Star on selections of Cigars. Also, 5 stars on the two people I talked to on pipes and cigars. I haven't seen a collection like this in Northern California. The guy that's been there 23+ years knows his stuff and guided me to some of his recent favorites. Hendricks was the younger dude and he was really helpful as well in explaining that the pipe I got for a deal was actually a rare find. He helped me buy some new pipes to smoke from. I think if you are a cigar or pipe person visiting the area I would come to this place and look at their collection. I think the vibe and people here were really nice. This place is awesome! I have passing by Telford's for years and finally stopped in to buy some cigars for my friend and I. Huge selections of cigars and gentlemen who was working at the time gave me some great suggestions. He was very friendly and of course knowledgeable. Make sure you sign up for their VIP program where you earn points when buying cigars and redeeming the points towards future purchase discounts. You can also buy a cigar and smoke it on-site. There are many tables inside the store where you can enjoy your cigar or sit outside on their front patio. I was told it's heated in the winter. They also offer a membership where for $70 a mo (as of Sept 23) you can store you cigars on-site and use the exclusive members lounge area with TV and other amenities. I might end up doing that. Overall a great place for your cigar needs. Definitely be back for more cigars and it's a great place to hang with friends too. read more

Wow. You ever walk into a store and think, hey, I want to come back. That was my thought even before I stepped foot inside, because I could smell a scent I love, of tobacco, from outside Telford's. Even if you are not a smoker, you can enjoy the memories of an uncle or whomever it is you knew as a child, who was partial to a pipe. I was looking to buy a gift. A colleague at work has been out three months. He is coming back tomorrow. One of the things we do together from time to time is enjoy a cigar at a lounge. So that makes a box an item that is specific to a professional relationship. I am guilty, like everyone else, of offering a gift card or something else that is generic, on a special occasion. It is so much better to bestow a present that could not be for simply any random individual. If you have ever been in a tobacconist, you have a sense of these stores that are disappearing or have become dedicated primarily to non tobacco products. This place is old school in the best sense. It also is huge. I am not a stranger to these establishments (I liked Georgetown Tobacco in Washington, D.C.) I have never been someplace as well stocked as this, and that includes in New York City, where I live. They also were friendly. That is a plus. It is generally true of this type of business. They want you to linger. In this instance, they have an indoor space to partake and also a porch where you are invited to stay. My plan is to do that next time. read more

This is a must stop cigar shop if you are anywhere in the Bay Area. I have dropped by 3-4 times now. Sometimes just to look or buy a cigar or two but the last time I bought a box of limited Davidoff's, two top dollar limited cigars and three unusual but very affordable cigars. They have a lot of humidors and accessors. One can smoke out front in chairs overlooking the small lawn road and Hwy 1 or indoors. My one issue is, and, will probably never change given the legacy here, is the indoor smoking lounge is not ventilated or separated from the tobacco area. So all my purchases down to the tobacco itself - even the cigars in the box - smells like a dank cigar smoke rather than fresh sweet tobacco. Ironic I know. So the first thing I smell in my humidor at home now is cigar smoke. A classy touch would be to separate the two areas with some glass doors and modify the ventilation a bit. This was a really nice place. We didn't stay to lounge or enjoy a cigar, but I did enjoy the time we were there. Lots of cute comfy places if you would like to relax outside, and some comfy couches inside as well in a separate area from the retail side of the house. Can you hear the sounds of angels singing? That's what I heard when I opened the door to this place. Huge expansive, the Nordstrom of cigar and smoke shops! I was in heaven! To the left along a pipes and accoutrements filled corridor was a smoking room. To the right, cigars cigars cigars! And more cigars! Dayam! I was overwhelmed! Fortunately knowing what I smoke and love the most; a discontinued Namakumbia Room 101 Chingon... well those bad boys are all gone except the knowledgeable gent who was helping me knowingly pointed over his left shoulder and there were a few minis left. Darn Well I said that is... was my favorite I was hoping to get lucky, I have a case of Ashton's that are good mellow easy smokes but I want more of that robusto flavah! He pointed me to two others with knowledgeable aplomb. These CAO's are pretty close and a couple others he pointed two. Not being too greedy I grab a couple of each. He said this nice lady will check you out. I told her I need a torch too. But explained I play golf and loose em so she got me an inexpensive torch perfect for windy days on the links. They have events they have parties! I signed up. They also have a nice out door smoking area. With various Adirondack chairs tables facing the freeway. Not the most beautiful view but Mt Tam is off in the distance. Most importantly, it's 15 min non traffic to my cribbage. Score! Frankly I've been to many many cigar bars and this was literally the most impressive place I have ever seen! Like Aaahnold.... I'll be back! read more

I recently talked with my dad and he is suffering gallantly with illness and i had just found out he had run out of his cigars i had gotten him at Telford. I called Telford (i am on oxygen myself and don't get around as much as i used too) and a nice lady said that she would drop my dads cigars off at his house since she was driving by there on her way home. Well, i called my dad and told him and he was so amazed by the service it just left him gobsmacked that someone would do that! Same here! Well, i called him today and might i say he was very happy with his box of cigars and had just finished one half a cigar and was gonna enjoy the other half as soon as i got off phone with him. This is a really amazing place! So please don't get the rating mixed up with it being a negative establishment. Because that's not the case. I've been smoking for years and feel very happy finding this place. But.... The first couple of times I came in, there was a lady and another knowledgeable gentleman that gave me some AMAZING ADVICE on choosing the right pipe for myself when I was looking to get another one. Amazing KNOWLEDGE & customer service between the two of them with cigars and pipes. The issue I had is when I came from the city to fill up on some pipe tobacco the other day. I asked a question about pipe filters & stated it was my first time "USING FILTERS" in a pipe. And the guy that was there this time, was treating me if it was my first day smoking ever. Over explaining EVERYTHING and never seem to listen to what I was actually saying. He asked if I needed "pipe cleaners..." I said, "No. I JUST GRABBED some the other day." But, I did remember I also needed a pipe tool. He decided to explain to me what a pipe tool was and how the components of said tool(s) operate. Very annoying. But I'm use to this kind of treatment, because even though I'm pushing 35 people think I'm barely 21. My issue outside of the condescending explanation of things, was the fact that he was trying to force a larger sale. Kept asking me like another 3x's if I needed pipe cleaners or anything else. And his excuse was, "Well... I just don't want you to get home and realize you forget something else." Well if the first time you asked me if I needed pipe cleaners, I respond, "I JUST GOT SOME." Would mean I wouldn't think I forgot them when I got home. The only thing I forgot to ask for, (which I explained), was the pipe tool. Even when I was looking through those, I was being told what everything I touched was as if it wasn't obvious. I've been in the service industry for 20+ years. So I understand "Upselling," but "Force-Selling" is the NUMBER 1 way to lose my business. Luckily I had a great experience the first 2xs I came in the store. So I won't let this deter me from coming back. read more

Telford's used to be located in the shopping center up the road. They got thrown out after many decades there because the on-site smoking was disturbing the delicate neighbor businesses. Until 3 years ago, I used to smoke 3 premium cigars per day. I was an addict. I used to shop at Telford's occasionally. They have a good selection of premium cigars. But the prices often shocked me. For a cigar that I would purchase on line for $5 at www.jrcigars.com, Telford's would charge $14. Quite a price mark-up. Partially blame California tobacco taxes, but a generous profit margin was in the price as well. If you are just an occasional tobacco smoker, Telford's is a good place to shop. They got a great selection. Smart & experienced sales people will guide you to product that will satisfy. Yes, you can smoke in the store. Cool! Visit before the health police shut this place down forever. read more

It's pretty damn neat to be able to smoke on a patio of the very place where you purchase a cigar. All the the tobacco shops I've ever been to do not have a patio for smoking because of the governmental ordinances prohibiting smoking in pretty much any public place. They have an impressive selection of cigars, which I expected. A large amount of pipe tobacco and a very neat array of tobacco pipes as well. The two people who assisted me with selecting my smoke and purchasing it were helpful. Given my homebase and my propensity to only share a smoke with friends, I rarely visit cigar shops. I have been plenty of times to where I'm not a novice but it takes a while to orient myself. I was pleased that I was not talked down to. Instead I had a conversation with someone who seemed genuinely interested in getting me a good smoke in line with my vague description of what I was looking for. read more

I make a weekly commute from SF up to Marin just to visit them, pick-up new tobacco, and maybe get a cigar or two. Nice place to buy cigars. Not a great place to smoke them. There is no lounge for visitors beyond a single round table in the store and a few beat-up chairs on the porch. Telford's is VERY good at separating customers from their money. Charging more than $24.00 for an $11.00 cigar is awful. I have to give it to them, they are making $$$$$$. The selection is good. However, there are a noticeable number of clunkers in the lineup. Also, it looks like they take whatever does not sell from a box and pile them alongside that particular brand. It gives the place a rummage sale feel. Bits and bobs all over the place. As I said before, the prices are up there. There are cardboard Cigar Aficionado cigar ratings like NASCAR stickers all over the place. I thought that's what the staff is for - to guide their customers. Telford's is not a place to browse - they want you to make a decision, upsell you if possible and get you out of the store. Like I said before, they are very focused on making $$$. Not a negative but one thing that really ruins the experience. For my $$$ I'll stick with Atlantic Cigar mail order. read more

As a 30+ year cigar smoker I have been to a lot shops and Telfords has the best selection of cigars in the San Fran / North Bay Area. They also have an incredibly knowledge and friendly staff. I had a problem with a lighter and the owner Brian handled it personally to my 100% satisfaction. They also have a great selection of lighters and boxes pipes and more. Nothing denotes distinction quite like a cigar, and nothing stinks so noticeably, either. Guilty confession: I'm a wannabe cigar smoker. I say "wannabe" because they seem like an awesome idea at the time, but the after effects always leave me feeling a bit dirty and cheap. Just like porn. (WHAT? Who said that?!? Not me!) You want to love cigars, because they have machismo written all over them. Think of the people that cigars conjure from memory: Groucho Marx, Winston Churchill, the Gubernator, Wild Bill Clinton, Castro, or some relative that left an indelible impression because they smelled like sh*t. (For me, it's George Peppard, aka Hannibal, of the A-Team, whose punch line "I love it when a plan comes together," was followed by a CHOMP! - and in goes the cigar.) Whatever the special occasion, there's cause for a cigar, and quite unfortunately, there's never a place that's appropriate to designate for cigar smokers. Even people standing outside of a bar, lighting up cigarettes like chimneys, will distance themselves from the guy with the cigar. Is there no safe haven for the cigar lover? Must we all smoke alone...? Help me, Telford's, you're my only hope. And help they do. Telford's is a bastion of solitude for every outcast cigar smoker. They have a vast (and I do mean vast in the "holy crap, there's another entire section of the building that I hadn't even visited before" sense of the word) selection of cigars. Have something particular in mind? They've probably got it. If not? They'll either order it for you, or they'll find something comparable that you'll like (and they know their stogies like a dog knows the smell of its own...yeah, that). Smoke inside on a cushy leather chair, or smoke outside on their porch in a rocking chair. Ahhh. This is it. If you've ever been interested in smoking a cigar, this is the place to learn, relax, and indulge. Important to note, you will walk away smelling like a cigar butt, even if all you're doing is browsing, so be forewarned. You can try and hide your guilty pleasure going in, but there's no way to conceal it after the fact. Perhaps it's the thought of my Dear Grandpa Bob that draws me to a pipe shop - whatever the reason, they're cool with me. Humidors here are beautiful. They make me want to take up smoking. I am still on the fence about it.... They will help you out with any request, and there's a smoking area in the back and outside, they've got signature Southern rocking chairs. For the Old-Man-With-Pants-Up-To-His-Nipples side of you. You should be warned, however that they are smoking in here. They all are. The sales man didn't mind at all blowing his smoke all over me and my pretty party dress. This makes Grace a smokey smelling mess instead of the high class whore I pretend to be. Noooot goood. I've been to Telfords a bunch of times. So many times, that you would think the 4-5 guys that work here would remember me. They don't. You would think that they would be cordial and helpful. They aren't. I like Telfords a lot for their gigantic cigar selections, it truly is massive. But I really can't stand the people that work there. It always feels like I'm bothering en employee when I ask them a question. Their customer service sucks, unless your a wealthy d-bag spending lots of doe; then you get their attention. I never write reviews, but after my experience today with Telefords I am compelled to do so.....I have been a good customer for many years with these guys and have always received great service... until today. I just got off the phone with (I believe the owner or manager). They lost the paperwork on an expensive lifetime warranty cigar lighter that they offered to have repaired or replaced for me 18 months ago (since I purchased it at Telefords). He offered me a $40 in store credit and basically said take it or leave it. When I declined his offer and told him it was a $120 lighter, he then told me to never come in to his store again. Really? In 57 years, I have never been banished before.....let alone banished while I was on the phone, and for something that the "banishee" screwed up in the first place. I guess I have finally become a rebel? Your call as to where you spend your time and money, but I would never do business with Telefords again. I am embarrassed to say this after so many years of being a customer. read more

A few weeks ago I went into the store looking for an ashtray, I was successful and very happy with my find. I also bought a gorgeous DuPont " RACEMACHINE" lighter. Hector was the salesman, he was very nice, patient and took the time to show me different lighters. Yesterday I received a box of Montecristo No.2 from a friend who visited Cancun. I figured since I have such a nice lighter and now a box of Montecristo No.2 Cuban cigars, I would need decent humidor. Once again Hector took the time to show me the different humidors and the differences between them. I ended up with a "Elie Bleu" humidor, which I had them condition it with distilled water for 24 hours. I have to say I'm very happy with Telford and the staff. After Grant's tobacco shop on Market Street closed, I was kinda wandering around smoking crap for two years (doesn't sound very good, does it?). I have driven by Telford's numerous times but never had a chance to stop by and I finally did yesterday. Well, this place is the bomb! Loads of cigar options, beautiful pipes, lighters, and drawers of tobacco - blended and straight. I was helped by Barney who was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I was recommended their Belden blend which was the closest to Grant's Royal Reserve which I used to smoke. I walked away with their Bay blend, their Belden and their Nob Hill. Funny how one's taste evolves over time, I smoked their Bay blend and absolutely loved it! It's smooth, and easy, I love the fact that it's a drier tobacco and so it stayed lit in the bowl without me having to strike a match or flick on my lighter frequently when I wanted a puff. I wasn't so hot about the Belden - am not sure if it's because I had already smoked a bowl of the Bay beforehand. I'll try it again on it's own next time. And I can't wait to try the Nob Hill for my first taste of Latakia. This place is a gem and I hope they stay in business! Because I spotted a Torini pipe I want and I will be back to buy it! read more
