Old Florida atmosphere. Opened in 1946. Vinyl tile flooring (probably the original tile). Murals painted on the plaster walls. White table cloths for lunch and dinner. A wonderful time capsule taking you back to the 40's. You feel like Humphrey Bogart could walk in any minute. The specialty here is fresh, locally caught seafood which typically includes grouper, snapper, pompano, shrimp, oysters and soft shell crab. We enjoyed the Grouper Reuben at lunch. Small bar on side. The owners seem very nice and the food is good but........ Tables are crammed on top of each other. Old people screaming at each other. More iPhones lighting up menus than fans asking for an encore at. Sammy Hagar concert. If the place is crowded turn around. Could not wait to get out of there. Our captain recommended this place after a morning of fishing. Located downtown, but easy to find. The inside gives you an old-school, speakeasy like vibe. Summary: Go! Just get on the phone and call for a booking. I don't give very many 5-star reviews, but temptations was just great. I'd take a few points off for the room, but what they lack there is more than made up for elsewhere. Room: Definitely not Temptation's strong suit. Very utilitarian. In the full light of day it would look a bit like an elaborately decorated cafeteria. They even deliver the meals on those gray, plastic push carts I remember from the high school cafeteria. Service: Exceptional. Our server, Pete, was vey friendly and steered us toward a few things that we really appreciated. The appetizers came out quickly (soup and salad) and when the entrees were taking a little longer than we thought normal, Pete was there to entertain for a few minutes and take our attention back. Food: this is where Temptations really shines. We started with a Bibb lettuce salad and a lobster chowder and both were delicious. The salad was dressed really well and everything tasted fresh. For entrees, we had a seared tuna (special that day) and pompano piccata. The tuna was a really big block of very fresh, rare tuna, seared on both sides with an Asian noodle salad and a side of ginger fried rice. The Pompano was beautifully cooked with a delicate, flaky texture and the piccata sauce was delicious. It came with a potato croquette and both entrees came with sautéed asparagus. Everything was seriously delicious. Dessert is always a tug-of-war with us. We're up for it if it's something really special, but otherwise we're rather not waste the calories. Again Pete came through, suggesting the pecan pie and it was among the best I've ever tasted. Value: Temps is a very good value for what you get. Our dinner with two apps, two entrees, one dessert, and a bottle of wine was $185 and the wine was about 1/3 of that. DISAPPOINTING We took a day trip up from Fort Myers to Boca Grande and Gasparilla, and decided to eat here because it had the highest Yelp reviews. I can only conclude that the tourists are so relieved to find a white tablecloth joint in this remote outpost that they enthuse a bit too much. We started with the Lobster & Corn Chowder. It was okay, with one prominently placed piece of lobster, much corn and 1/3 potato cubes. We also had the highly acclaimed Strawberry Salad. It had lovely clumps of cheese and candied pecans, but aside from that it was nothing very special. What makes it strawberry? Sliced strawberries ringed the plate. The rest was lettuce. The dressing, which must be taken on the side because it is so rich, is a sort or balsamic reduction and is quite nice. We also had the Grouper Bits with French Fries. The fish was fresh but completely lacking in any seasoning. Very bland. And the fries were not crispy as advertised, but rather thick and rather limp. This place would have difficulty surviving someplace where the competition was a bit stiffer. read more

I love "The Temp," as locals refer to it. My parents have a house on Boca Grande and it's their favorite restaurant, which says something. I love the retro old school ambiance and decor. The service is excellent and food excels as well. You're crazy not to order fish here as the selection is wonderful, and always fresh. You can have the fish prepared a couple of different ways, and they are very accommodating of special requests (e.g. double side of vegetables). It's not cheap, but you get your money's worth. It's definitely better to eat in the front room as the atmosphere is MUCH nicer. That being said, if you are a larger party, or have kids, you're better off getting a table out back. My only compliant is the wine list. There is a decent selection BUT the labels are all pretty low quality and they charge a premium for them. You're better off buying a bottle if you want something of decent quality. There is a nice bar which is great for a drink in the afternoon, or beverage pre, or post, dinner. read more

Caught a grouper and brought the fillets in to the restaurant, handed them to the waiter, and they cooked it for us to perfection. Temptation Restaurant was a surprising little gem that my friend had always wanted to try. We decided today was the day! We entered and saw what seemed like a little dinner set back in time. E wandered to the other side where there was a bar and one bar height table in the window with two chairs. We decided to sit there. Our waitress was bubbly and kind. Came right over and asked what she could get started for us. We asked for a drink and lunch menu. Promptly ordered a Prosecco drink and an old fashioned. We then ordered a bouillabaisse salad with crab and shrimp and a raspberry vinegarette, a lobster and corn chowder and a platter with fried grouper and shrimp, sweet potato fries and a fresh fruit bowl. The lobster and corn chowder was so thick! But it was delicious! The platter was tasty and my friend enjoyed her salad. The old fashioned was surprising. Wisconsin old fashioneds are completely different from Florida old fashioned. There was a giant ice cube with about an inch of whiskey in it, Dark cherries on a stick and a bit of orange peel in it. You can't help but feel like you were transported back into the 1950's when you walk into town, and the Temptation restaurant is not different. My family and I have been a number of times as we come to this restaurant at least once during our trips to Boca Grande. Though we've sat in the front area of the restaurant, we usually choose to get a reservation in the back room, where the atmosphere is a little more casual. The food, especially the fresh seafood is out of this world fabulous! Their strawberry salad is something we order each time, and it is always delicious, though sometimes the dressing can get a little heavy, so order it on the side to be on the safe side. Their hot crabmeat temptation appetizer is also delicious, though rich and heavy, so be sure you have enough room for the entree too because they are just as worth the room in your stomach! We have heard wonderful things about the fried oysters, the fried shrimp and many of the other fried dishes, but our group tends to order the fresh fish dishes, because they simply can't be beat. The blackened grouper is phenomenal! Time and time again, we leave there saying that it was the best grouper on the island. You have your choice of sauces with this dish, which makes it even better. The side choices are also quite numerous, though a favorite that is not always available is a Jamaican twice-baked potato--heaven in your mouth. The desserts are simple and more basic than some of the others on the island, but they have a strong slice of key lime pie and their goldbrick sundae with the hardened chocolate crust takes you back to your favorite ice cream parlor as a kid and is commonly ordered by our group. read more

When I go back home to Boca to visit, the rallying cry is always: meet you at the Temp for happy hour! The bartenders might as well be a part of my family, but they'll treat a newbie the same way they treat the locals. (Well, the locals might get a little attitude, but probably because they deserve it.) Go with a group, or go by yourself. After you spend a half-hour checking out all the things on the wall, turn to your neighbor and say hello. Chances are you'll lose the next couple of hours to great conversation. I brought my New Orleans boyfriend to visit for the first time, and The Temp bar was the place he was most comfortable, because it's the most authentic and real. It's a little bit of preserved Boca Grande -- everything that makes it a great place to live or visit. All my family loves it here, and I do too. Have a Moscow Mule. Or two. But NEVER three. What a great dinner! I had the strawberry salad, South Florida Grouper with the corn sauce and the Jamaican jerk twice-baked potato (not on the menu, but knew to order based on another Yelp review). My wife had the cedar plank salmon and Cajun fingerling potatoes. Seldom have we had a meal with so much flavor. The grouper with corn sauce was spectacular! My wife's salmon really had that smokey plank taste. Oh, and we had the key lime pie...I recommend you do the same. The only critical comment I have relates to the dressing on the strawberry salad. The salad itself was delicious, but the consistency and taste of the dressing was a little strange. Make sure you get it on the side. The wait staff was great! The fish is fresh, service friendly and the bar is lively and fun. Frequently, i pass the main bar and sit at the rear bar for a bite of dinner and a glass of wine. Truly, the best fried shrimp I have ever had and the coconut pie is amazing. The Temp has their own pastry chef that makes all of her crusts from scratch. No mistaking quality of the baked goods here. Order the strawberry salad... its huge so you may want to share it! I have never been let down by the food, drink or service at the Temp! Call in the summer months to make sure they are open. They close for vacation and cleaning at some point! During high season, call ahead for a reservation for sure...
