The food itself is fine, however our biggest gripe is about the ordering system. If the restaurant is operating in to-go mode only, we would expect more accurate estimations of food readiness time. We asked for a phone call when the order was ready and we were told that is not possible.We were told our food would be ready in 20 minutes and we arrived within 15 minutes and our food was already cold. As soon as you walk in, the scent of smoked bbq invites you in even further. The overall ambience was very inviting. They have a great mural of Evanston highlights that is a great compliment to the place. The host was very polite especially when we asked to sit outside and changed our minds when we felt the brisk breeze. Our waitress was also nice but seemed to be pretty busy since we couldn't find her when we needed her. We came in for brunch and ordered buttermilk biscuits and gravy, crispy grilled cheese with mushrooms, steak and eggs, and a kids cheese pizza. The sauce in the biscuits and gravy was bursting with flavor and came with a lil spicy kick. The grilled cheese had a tasty caramelized crust that I could get enough of. The steak and eggs was short on the steak but tasted pretty decent. Our daughter ate the cheese pizza with no complaints, so no issues there. We also tried their pizza when they were on location at Temperance Brewery. We were able to choose the sauce and meat for $12. We chose a white sauce with mushrooms and spinach as well as a red sauce with sausage. Both pizzas lacked sauce and the crust was a tad on the too thin side, hence lacking flavor. I've been here for brunch twice and have tried The Dude, Buttermilk Biscuit, Fresh Berry French Toast, and hash brown (not on menu but you can request it). Everything I've tried here tasted GREAT, and I am especially impressed by The Dude (sausage, fried eggs, maple glazed bacon, and cinnamon roll). One warning is that the portions are HUGE, so it'd be a good idea to share one entree with a side or two. The only complaint I have is the service. The two waitresses I've had haven't been that attentive and were really slow at refilling our drinks. It could be because we were seated outside and they forgot about us a few times. I also think the manager was very rude (not exactly sure if he was the manager, but both times he was hanging around the cash register but not performing the role of a host). When I was eating the Dude, he came by my table and said "You're not going to eat the whole thing, are you??" He said this in a rude tone and he should not be making comments like that considering he works at the restaurant. Would have given this a solid 4, but had to drop it to a 3 due to poor service. Used to be my family's go-to favorite neighborhood appt for brunch, lunch and dinner. But since a family member turned vegan and gluten free, we now look for spots that can accommodate all of us. We ate here with with friends at the weekend and while everyone was happy with their choices, our family member with special dietary restrictions could literally only eat one item on the menu with a ton of modifications (the North by Northwestern salad minus cheese, croutons and barley). Instead of attempting to make the remaining ingredients more palatable for this person, the restaurant brought out what literally looked like an entire clam shell of mesclun lettuce and a meager sprinkling of corn, sweet potato and cucumber. They didn't even have any dressings that were gluten free and dairy free (how hard is it to make a simple vinaigrette?), so our family member had a terrible experience. The kitchen staff could have added other vegetables or seeds on the salad to make it a bit better; it was so pathetic and the staff was really not helpful or empathetic. I encourage Ten Mile House to add just one menu item suitable to vegans and those who are gluten free; what about a simple vegetable stir fry? Even the restaurant's connected donut shop (DB3) has gluten free and vegan donuts, so why not Ten Mile? Unfortunately we won't be back after having been regular customers for years. I went there for lunch. I got an appetizer, picture not shown, which was Angry Shrimp, shrimp served on a bed of polenta and tomato sauce. The polenta was delicious, but the sauce was salty to me and the shrimp had a fishy taste. I then ordered the beet burger to try it out. To be honest, the inside look like someone took red velvet cake and crumbled it. They glued it with a slice of cheese and a horseradish sauce. It also came with lettuce and tomato. Tables outside along the outside wall. Bright space inside with a partial view to the kitchen. Solid lunch. Greens on the "almost a waldorph" were a bit over their due date and rotten which detracted from the rest of the very tasty ingredients in the salad. The cranberry shallot dressing was way too thick however, served on the side it resembled a chutney, not sure how that ever could have dressed the salad evenly. The south by northwestern salad was very tasty with smoked chicken breast. The grilled cheese was fantastic - three or four cheeses with some of it shredded on the outside of the bread making a lacy and crispy coating. Fries were crispy with good flavor. More interesting items on the menu we'd like to try. We walked in past a table that needed to be bussed, after we saw it was cleared we asked the host if we could move there - he hesitated and seemed put out by the request. Since, I didn't want any of thiet sandwiches or burgers I just got the Angry Shrimp and Tater tots. Tater tots were awesome. That's the only thing we liked. Note, I ordered two appetizers as my meal because they don't really have much of a selection. The shrimp tasted like angry crab style (if you don't know where or what that is, look it up. Came to Ten Mile with my wife on a rainy June Saturday at about 4pm. Nice time to come as it was only about 30% full. This is a nice casual place. There were couples alone, couples with kids and tables with 10 or more multi-generational families. Says a lot about this place which means all age groups can enjoy this place. I really like this place. The atmosphere was chill but just lively enough. The decor is like being in a place in the city. Staff is on their business and they are personable and professional. Real laid back without the stuffiness or "scene" that you can get in some joints in the city. Food was nice, "real niiice". My wife had the crispy grilled cheese and it was very good-warning though it is not your traditional grilled cheese as it is very buttery and rich and may not be for everyone. I had the fried chicken sandwich which has green chili mayo, cole slaw and these pickled onions that are fire business. The pickles are awesome and I don't like pickles if that gives you any idea about how good they were. Almost forgot that we had the pepper jack stuffed tater tots. 5 HUGE tots that you could not duplicate at home if you tried. Very good. My wife also had a tortilla soup that was phenomenal. Ten mile is on Central Ave away from the busier restaurant blocks in Evanston. I think this is the best location. You can park-Still have to feed the meters but worth it and you don't have to fight with the other restaurant traffic in Evanston. Tried this spot via delivery on a harried weeknight. I had the cuban and attempted to try the broccolini/garlic side sub (but it was not delivered) and my daughter had the burger sliders and fries. I was pretty underwhelmed with the meals, particularly given the price. My cuban sounded so creative and tasty based on the menu description, but in actuality it was rather flat and tasted just kind of pass-able. The ingredients didn't quite marry together and seemed to just happen to jumble together. It didn't taste bad, but it wasn't quite realized, either. The fries were nice and salty, but nothing fancy. I regret not getting to try to broccolini to see how they handle cooking veggies. My daughter's burger came with pickles to add but no other veggies. Based on how kid's menu items appear to be generally put together (at least for 'American' restos) there is an assumption that kid's don't want to eat vegetables. This is regrettable as my kiddo does enjoy veggies and a burger that is just meat, bread, and pickles looks kind of sad. I didn't try her food as there wasn't quite enough to spare - not to say the serving size was unreasonable, she was just hungry that night. Had the Stuffed Tater Tots to start. 5 very filling Tots. Good with the balsamic ketchup. The ambiance was great in that the lighting was dim and basketball was on TV. The noise in the air seemed to drown out chatter, which I prefer. My friend and I had dinner together at Ten Mile. My friend is a Black man. I am a white woman. After dinner, we orde b red an item to go, but we accidentally left it on the table. When we arrived home 5 minutes later, we realized we'd forgotten our takeout, and my friend went straight back. When he arrived 10 minute after we'd left, the staff told my friend that they had thrown out our takeout. The staff did not apologize or even express sympathy. My friend asked if they could make the item again, and the staff said no, the kitchen was closed. The staff did not offer a refund, suggest he come back tomorrow, or suggest any other way to make up for the disappointment. We were to blame for forgetting the take out, but I was shocked by the way the staff treated my friend. They were dismissive, unhelpful, and snarky. I have never been treated like that at 10 Mile, and I was shocked to hear of it. When I called five minutes later, the staff's attitude was drastically different The assistant manager Linda immediately and profusely apologized and expressed sympathy for my disappointment at loosing my takeout. She offered a refund and told me that the chef hadn't left yet and could make the dish again. I assume the the staff at 10 Mile was not behaving with conscious racism when they treated my Black frIend so differently and less respectfully that they treated me, but the difference was stark. Both my frIend and I are convinced that the difference was because of the difference in our races. Unconscious racism is pervasive, and I am certainly not free of my own unconscious bias, but I was particularly struck by this example and was sad that my friend experienced this treatment at a restaurant I had suggested. Nice place for brunch or dinner. Feels a little fancy even though the food is not. I would describe it as comfort food and most of it is on the heavier side. My husband usually orders the stuffed poblano peppers and I get the Southwest salad. The buttermilk chicken sandwich is also good. They smoke their own meats and so the place smells amazing. I wish I had photos of the delicious South by Northwestern Salad but it was too good not to devour immediately. Not overdressed, a great mix of crunch and sweet and savory- delicious. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were friendly and fast. I had "The Ten Mile" cocktail and it was the perfect amount of strong and sweet. My friend got a margarita and it was classic with lime juice, not overdone. The vibe inside was cozy and hip, great for a date night or just a dinner with friends. I have been going here with friends and family and always loved the food and atmosphere. Not mentioning, location is in the Wilmette area with easy parking. I just recently booked the party room which is DB3 donuts during the day and hosted my husband's birthday party 30 friends. Everyone agreed the room, service and the food were wonderful. Lori, the manager, was so helpful and was always available for any questions and concerns during the planning. She worked with my budget and was there the entire night to make sure we are having a great time. The staff wonderful! Rachel made sure drinks were filled for guests and everything was taken care of.
