A really cool and unique shop with a variety of trinkets, jewelry, souvenirs, records, and health/beauty products. I always like to stop in here when walking down Hawthorne during PDX visits. Super friendly atmosphere, cool products, and great vibes. A perfect place to stop in to get unique Oregon/Portland souvenirs- or gifts for yourself. Tender Loving Empire always has me wanting everything in the store, and I'm certain you'll agree. Cheers!

A very cool store in a pretty dang cool little pocket of SE Portland, Tender Loving Empire should really be on anybody's list of places to stop for local holiday shopping. You could scratch quite a few people off your list in just one visit! The merchandise is a well-curated collection of locally-made goods ranging from stationary to jewelry to stuffed animals. Price points seemed pretty reasonable, and everything is displayed nicely. The aesthetic of the store is pretty minimalist and allows the goods for sale to be the focus. Smart. So, they're also a record label. I hadn't heard of any of the bands actually on their label (hey, I'm brand new to town, so cut me some slack!), but they did also have an extensive local section. Here's where things get funny: prominently displayed, they had at least an album from at least one band that's decidedly not local (Other Lives, hailing from Oklahoma). I mean, it's still a great album, and I picked it up, but doing some research to find a local connection, nothing came up. Not a huge deal, but just seems odd. I dig this store, and I'll definitely be back. Maybe on my next visit they can help me solve that one minor mystery.

    Cute interior!

"Can I have one of everything??" -Me, every time I enter stores like TLE. This store is full of bits & bobs that make me wanna celebrate every/any occasion (greeting cards galore) and finally get around to starting a gallery wall in my apartment (so much cute wall art!) I resisted temptation to buy ALL the things, and left with a very cute print that reads, "Home is where the wifi connects automatically" for my new apartment. :-) This is a great spot to stop by if you're looking for quirky, fun, and/or quintessentially Portland-y souvenirs. Things here are on the pricey side, but hey, no sales tax in Oregon so there's that.

I want to buy everything in here!!! All are either handmade or locally based - from soaps, make-up, and beauty products to prints, greeting cards, and other accessories. Very unique items and thoughtful gifts that you likely won't find elsewhere. A little on the spendy side, but a great way to support local artists and creators though!

Situated in popular Hawthorne street, this nifty shop has all kind of cool stuff: creative art pieces, gifts, jewelry, music, shirts for adults and babies etc. pretty things that will tickle your heart. Price might not be cheap but the quality is good.

    So delightful :)

Cute gifty shop with a few different items from local artists, but there are better shops on Hawthorne. Try Presents of Mind instead.

I could've stayed in there all day, easily. A lot of the negative reviews are baffling because prices are incredible and the employees were incredibly kind and friendly AND nobody said a single word about us touching the products. Maybe some people are just terrible at being customers? Anyway, if I wasn't traveling, I would've bought SO many things. Amazing old SLR cameras, guitars that my wife was messing around with, old toys, books, records at incredible prices... I so wish I could've fit stuff in my stupid suitcase. Records wise, they had The Four Tops, Joe Tex, Archie Bell & The Drells, Martha & The Vandellas, WILSON PICKETT!!!!!! and so many other soul albums I want to own sooo badly. Solomon Burke, for god's sake!!!! And most were $8-15 MAXIMUM which blew my stupid little mind. I need to come back here either on a road trip from CA or just suck it up and ship stuff to myself. And of course they have a beautiful puffball cat who was enjoying chin scratches but balked at my wife trying to pet her on the back (I WARNED HER). It's everything I need from a retail experience. Edit: Owner replied to ket me know they DO ship. That's excellent to know for my next visit because I am regretting that I didn't buy and ship myself records and other fascinating, strange things that I want to fill my home with.

That could be pottery, clothing, art, furniture, tchotchkes, plants, or something else. Some get really creative with their booths, adding hanging decor or a fun layout. I had some sticker shock over pricing, but I'm sure there are deals to be found also. If I were looking for a special item I would certainly return here to search. And it's a great place to wander looking for nothing in particular!

This place has both new and used items. We buy stuff every time we go. There is vinatage furniture, new art, used art, cool little chakis, chairs, purses, jewelry, antiques, clothing and great vintage finds. So much more as well! Some things are unaffordable for us and some are more reasonably priced. We found beautiful wood shelves that are stunning and bought them. They were exactly what we were looking for. We got a cool industrial console table abd other fool finds. I have bought a few nicknacks that I like and new art when they had a sale. Street parking is easy to find plus they have a parking lot. There are bathrooms. I would say the one thing I dislike is everything is a final sale. I mean absolutely everything. So I have not bought certain things in case they could not work where we want to put them or we were might want to use. Also for gifts since they are not returnable and want to give my gift receiver's that option. Some staff are more helpful than others. So it depends on who is working. This a good place to go if you are cool with final sales. Theycdo have grsat stuff.
