This is the age-old tale of the nerd (foodie) finally getting a date with the cheerleader (popular restaurant, beautiful food presentation), and the night ends in bitter disappointment because she has zero personality. We began with the Paloma cocktail, which was delicious and well balanced. The chips appear to be made in-house and had an off flavor, due to, we are assuming, old tortillas, and/or old deep frying oil. The bowl was also full of unappetizing "chunks" of multiple tortilla triangles folded over each other. These were bad chips. Food is presented beautifully. It's just delightful! Looking at the online menu earlier in the day really had us pondering what the heck to choose because it all looks so good! We started with the habanero mango ceviche. While it was also just lovely to look at, it was too fruit forward, so it was extremely tart (where was the salt?) and there was barely any shrimp on it. Also, we could not detect habanero at all, just a tad of smoky oil. The smoke flavor was really excellent but overpowered by the fruit. It was not a good value, and certainly not what we consider as being ceviche. For our mains, my partner ordered the hangar steak, which is usually a great option bc it is an inexpensive cut of meat that is actually quite tender. Except this one wasn't tender, and it lacked flavor. I had the braised beef rib, which was presented (& tasted like) beef cheek. It was fork tender, but it probably needed at least another 30 minutes of braise time. It was set in a bowl of way too much oil, and it had no flavor. This dish came with bone marrow, which was precisely why I wanted to order this dish. Sadly, the marrow was extremely scant (less than a teaspoon) and mostly consisted of oil (textureless), which does not fare well with a (bad) tortilla chip. I was scratching my head. Why did they even bother putting this on the plate? Do not order this expecting the fabulous marrow you get at a neighborhood bistro in Paris. We appreciated the addition of condiments (pickled red onion and jalapenos), but they were scant, and there was no salt shaker on the table. We each got rice and beans with our meal, which were both flavorful, but inconsistent (his had very little rice, but tons of cheese, mine had equal amounts of each, but hardly any cheese.). My initial instinct was to give this place another try, but my common sense kicked in, knowing it would be just as bland. Is this why people wind up in bad relationships? Good cock(tails) is not a good enough reason to keep going back. read more

Everything is really great here. The salad is so good. The dressing is amazing. The salsas are all great, sometimes I'll order some salsas to pick up when we have friends or family visiting. We've also ordered different meats to go and made our own tacos and arepas with fillings at home. Of course the resturant itself is awesome, but wanted to highlight this is a great place to get some things to go and have some simple and delicious meals you can put together at home too! Happening place on North Public Road. We went on a Thursday afternoon a few weeks ago and while we didn't have to wait for a seat, you could tell it was a popular spot. We started with the Teocalli Guacamole (Shallots, jalapeno, lime, green chorizo, chiles en escabeche, cotija) and it was super tasty. For tacos, I got the Pescado Tempura Style (Mahi fish deep fried in our house made gluten free tempura batter), and Tijuana Style Shrimp (Grilled shrimp taco, chipotle butter, oaxaca and chihuahua cheese, jalapeno cremosa). Both were tasty with a great kick of spice, although a little small for what you got, IMO. BF got the carne asada, pork belly, short rib Tijuana Style, and regular short rib tacos and he absolutely raved. I think he said the carne asada was the best. A few friends had told me about Teocalli and how they really liked the food. They also had warned me about getting a reservation as the place is very busy. Indeed, I went for dinner during the week with a group of 10 and was glad to have a reservation. Although, once we showed up, they could not find my name on the list. Lucky I had used email to make the reservation, and after a little confusion they managed to get us a table ready. That was the only little hiccup in an otherwise great dinner. The atmosphere is bright, noisy, and festive. Across from the bar, above the booth is a beautiful colorful mural by Denver based artist Chad Bolsinger. The covered patio is brighter than the first room, relaxed and fun, facing a wooden fence where artist Catherine Pistone painted huge Agave plants, very cool ! The menu is naturally gluten-free, simply because the restaurant sticks to the traditional Mexican cuisine which doesn't use wheat flour. But you still can get your fix of gluten in the form of local beer on tap. I liked the house margarita, not too sweet and enjoyed a few delicious tacos. The salsa matcha is amazing, I'd never had such an interesting salsa before, nutty, smoky and slightly sweetened with dates, quite spicy so stay away if you don't like your food hot. There are also a few vegetarians options. I found the prices very reasonable especially considering the quality of the food and can't wait to go back to try the Pork Carnitas. Desserts were also very interesting, different from what we are used to in most Mexican restaurants around here. The "Mexican" panna cotta was delicious a big enough to share. Some friends and I met up for margaritas and food at TeoCalli in Lafayette after work. The waitress was rude, hostile, and made clear from the moment we sat down that we weren't welcome. She brought out only half our order, demanded that she clear our glasses before we were finished, and then she started obnoxiously dragging chairs across floor to make that "screech" sound. There were open tables around us, and we didn't order anything high maintenance. I'm generally curious what we did wrong. The guacamole here is good, but not worth being mistreated. read more

This is a fairly fancy restaurant that we go to occasionally on special occasions or when we have out-of-town guests. The service is always good and the food is always tasty. My wife and I ate here for lunch today. We had the queso fundido for an appetizer, which had a lot of interesting flavors. The tortilla chips and fresh-made corn tortillas are delicious! For the main course my wife had the chicken enchilada suizas, which had a very tangy but not hot cream sauce. I had a carne asada taco and two carnitas tacos. The asada meat was a little tough but had a very good roasted flavor. The carnitas were good but soft rather than crispy (I like crispy), but were moist and tasty. Each taco is piled high on a single tortilla, but happily the tortillas hold together and don't collapse on you. The tacos are sold by the piece, so you can order as many as you want. I had three, which was really too much for me; two is a reasonably-sized meal. They have contactless ordering (you scan a QR code at the table to bring up the menu) and contactless payment through Toast (you scan a QR code on the check, then scan your credit card and enter the rest of the info). A plus of this location is that it is next door to Chocolaterie Stam, so you can stop by on the way out for chocolate or gelato (if you did not already stuff yourself on tacos). read more

Teocalli. A place of firsts. I've never seen off-duty employees throw discarded food from their plate across a bar previously. I'm sure the customer whose drink the food landed in would share my sentiment. I've never been rejected for a seat at the bar because employees have a higher status. Teocalli had one great barman, in every other respect they are the place to avoid in Lafayette. Hopefully the health code violation is in process. read more

Turned an old tired space into a hip vibrant scene. Wish I could give it a 4 stars because the food is wonderful. The service was very slow and inattentive. We had to go to the bar to get more drinks which the bartender apologized for and said she would bring them over. Which she never did. We had finished dinner when we got our second round. Our waiter had tables inside and outside and seemed to be covering a lot of space so I am not sure who is dividing up sections but you might rethink that. He was so knowledgeable about the food and made wonderful suggestions and was very kind. The macha salsa should be bottled and put on everything! All the tacos we tried were wonderful and the chips are warm and crunchy. Being a vegetarian there are very limited options which was disappointing. Excellent food and service. Loud acoustics. The table really enjoyed the special Salsa Trio, and I appreciated my superb Enchiladas Queso Suizas paired with a Dos Equis Amber. Others at the table had all manner of creative, impressive, plentiful tacos. We feel like we received value for the cost. Our server was a noticeably thoughtful, polite, young gentleman (Christopher?) and represented the business very well. Make reservations because this place is hopping. Be warned - acoustics are poor with many hard surfaces and insufficient sound-absorbing panels. The restaurant itself has been decorated very nicely, they spared no expense and the hostess was very polite and set the tone for a great evening. We started with the Salsa Trio. - Each individual sauce was very unique and tasted fantastic. We appreciated the extra chips at no charge. Dinner Time! Pork Shank - pibil slow roasted pork, smoked sweet onions, pickled shallots, x-ni-pek. - WOW WOW WOW! I was really blown away by how good it was. The pork was perfectly seasoned and cooked. It was a very nice sized portion. My friend got the Chicken Enchiladas - suizas jalapeño cream sauce, pickled cippolinis, lola rosa salad, oaxaca cheese. - The taste was great, but they were truly shameful in size. I considered them a small appetizer. When you consider my dinner was only $2 more, I have to say something went wrong. I wonder if they gave him the wrong amount. Friendly staff and attentive to my needs. Had 3 different tacos. Carnitas, De Birria and a Tijuana Style Shrimp taco. The best of the 3 was the shrimp. It had great flavor and was a decent surprise for a taco!! Would definitely stop back by when in town. I will have to stop by for the happy hour specials in the bar 4-6. Have to say they had their shit together for only being open 1 day!!! Taco love! I will probably eat any taco but know when I am eating really top notch ones. The two I had today were just that. The carne asada was excellent. The meat grilled with onions and cheese so good. The Birria also had well prepared meat, short ribs in this case. The Tijuana style is served with a small portion of consumme. I prefer a thicker Birria dipping sauce but honestly the flavors were all delicious. Okay, on to the house margarita. Whoa! Quite a kick and no sickly sweet mixer. BUT So overpriced and underperforming it's not even worth the words. The portion on the dinner is at best 1/2 the size of an appetizer. Carne asada 3 bites and potatoes/ micro portion of beans, 3 small tortillas, even an undersized lime!!! $21. Food cost was maybe $1 total. Rip off my friends. Teocalli is the best restaurant in Lafayette, full stop. Three words: GLUTEN FREE CHURROS. I've tried virtually everything on the menu at this point and never, ever been disappointed. The tacos are very good (although the Baja shrimp and the tempura tacos might make you see god), but the entrees are outstanding, and the sauce on the enchiladas suizas will wreck you for anything else. Over the summer, they had an ahi tuna special served with corn crema that woke me up: I never realized how delicious corn could be. And they have GLUTEN FREE CHURROS. The drinks selection is amazing. Have you ever had rosé tequila? You can now. The servers are delightful, knowledgeable, and attentive. The entire menu is gluten free. Amazing. Their desserts are all stellar. Went for the first time last night. Based on this visit, I give 3.5 stars We didn't have a reservation, and the wait time was 90 mins (Saturday 6pm). So we opted to order to-go. We got the queso fundido, which they should not offer as a to-go item. They just packaged it in a cardboard box? Would be better to say "we can only serve that in-house, we don't have a way to serve it to-go" and then we would've chosen a different starter. It came with a side of corn tortillas, but upon request the server did get us a bag a chips for it. We also got carne asada tacos which were fine, nothing special. We also ordered the kid's chicken taco which came with a side of beans and a side of grapes, and all of that was fine. Both the beans and grapes came in microwave safe plastic containers, which made the cheese in a box even more curious. You clearly have the option for other packaging. So, we will probably give it another go at some point, but will definitely make a reservation to eat in and see if that improves the meal. read more

So good! Happened to be in the Lafayette area today so we stopped in, and we didn't regret it. We had the salsa trio & quesadilla to start. Both of which were delicious. I especially loved the salsa which were flavorful and a generous portion. Next, we tried a variety of tacos and my mom and grandma went with the enchiladas suizas, which they loved. The carne asada taco was our favorite. The steak was very tender and so so good. Next, we loved the birria tia juana style. Very tender as well. I live in San Diego so I secretly roll my eyes a little when people want to take me out to a Mexican restaurant where they live. Our Mexican food is tough to beat out here. HOWEVER I would totally be a regular at this place if I lived in CO. I was with 5 other people and the place was already busy but we had great service. And great drinks. AND great food - started with the salsa trio...I wanted to put a straw in the orange one and drink it (I think it was the Macha one). Definitely the best thing we ate. The queso fundido was yummy, had a couple of tacos (tuna and carne asada) and they were fine, too. But then had the banana split dessert....wow. The churros were also on the table but I'm a sucker for banana so I LOVED this dessert.
