I have to wonder if Teofilo's is under different management. I've been there 3-4 times over the years, most recently a year and a half ago. Unfortunately I think I'm done with it. The food used to be very good. But over time it moved into the 'average' category. This time it was in the disappointing category. My chile rellenos were fine; I like the panko coating. However, the meat in my partner's carnitas burrito was like leather. Carnitas should be a little bit crispy but these were so dry he could barely cut them. A small bowl of chips and salsa that we assumed to be complimentary was $6. Service, while pleasant, was spotty and slow. They had the appetizer chips, salsa, were good and of course the sopapillas and honey are always good. The service was good. Quick on asking for drinks and getting orders. It was a good size group of people and getting the orders were good. I ordered the enchiladas (green and red chile /Christmas) with steak, rice and beans. Everything was good. Steak was over cooked for me and I didn't like the rice, beans were good. Enchiladas were good, sauce was tasty. Then there was a dessert. Something I haven't tried. Natillas! This was delicious! So disappointed. When I come into town to visit, teofilos is always a place I need to stop at; however today was extremely Disappointing. I'll start with the service they weren't very attentive we sat there needing refills for awhile. Next the food portions ! OMG. Everything has shrunk !! The tamale was so small I couldn't even believe it was a tamale ! And the chicken ! They served one tiny piece of chicken breast ! And the sopapillas !! They were so tiny ! & TOUGH ! They said they were " made fresh" but jeez it seemed like they had been sitting since last night. It's a very rare occasion that I am in the Los Lunas area. One of my friends from work wanted to hang out and treated me to lunch here. When we arrived there was a 20 minute wait but luckily with each other's company the time flew by. The staff was very friendly and covid compliant. Everyone wore masks. They had an extensive menu with a variety of New Mexican entrees. I was torn between fajitas, the gccb burger, and the burrito. All sounded good. I ended up going with the fajita plate. It's rare I get fajitas and I was sold on that. The food came out in a timely manner. The staff kept checking on us and making sure our cups were always full. The fajitas were packed with juicy flavor. They marinated them well and it reflects in the juicy tender steak flanks. Combined with the tortilla, guacamole, sour cream and lettuce I couldn't stop after the first bite! The tortillas were fresh! Very home cooked style fluffy and soft! The sopapillas were so fluffy and steamy I thought I was about to go into a food coma as stuffed as I was! It was all so good! Next time I'm in Los Lunas I'll gladly be back! A few years ago, I would have given Teofilo's five stars but no more. The food is fine if you stick with the typical New Mexican fare (enchiladas, rellenos, etc.). But the fajitas that I ordered there recently were a joke, despite being listed as a Teofilo's specialty. I just got a plate of chicken and refried beans (mostly beans) with no bell peppers or onions. It came with only two tiny flour tortillas. Another thing that sticks in my craw is that chips and salsa are no longer complimentary and now carry an extra charge of five dollars. Yikes! Even my server looked a little bit embarrassed when she broke the news to me about this. I know inflation has taken its toll on the restaurant industry but Teofilo's should really take a look at the direction they have gone in. I ate at Teofilo's twice this month when I was passing through town. I used to sometimes drive to Los Lunas from Albuquerque just to eat at Teofilo's but I doubt I would do this today. read more

Visiting my family from Maryland, we reviewed the dinner requirements...we can eat together as long as 1. everyone can make it, 2. I can have authentic Mexican food. They opted for Teofios, informing me this is their 'family go-to'. Entering the location, we had the most friendly waitress, she took time to chat; reviewing the menu, discussing specials, and even listening to a story our little cousin wanted to tell her. (so personable). I ordered the tamales platter, my husband the stuffed sopapilla. The chips and salsa were delicious-it took a lot of restraint not to fill up all my tummy space with them before dinner. The sopapillas were warm and flaky. Haven't been here in a couple of years and it was just as good as I remembered. We ordered the a la carte carne burrito and the a la carte chicken enchiladas. Both dishes were amazing. The Red Chile had a bit of a kick to it but had really good flavor. The green Chile was very flavorful and spicy. This place is great. One of my new favorite restaurants which has been around for awhile. This is an older house which is no big and the might play country music which does not matter as it's only for background noise. This place has amazing green chili, tamales and sopapillas. We tried several platters from their vegetarian tamales, regular pork tamales and their Pollo Hortencia and their guacamole. We smothered our dishes in the mushroom green chili. It was all amazing. Anyone that bashes this place for anything other than their food is morons. This place is rustic but the food makes up for it. read more

RED CHILI "LIKE TIA USED TO MAKE" My family is from Ohio. The closest they got to New Mexican was "chili soup" with macaroni. Yep, not anything like New Mexican. But, my husband introduced me to green chilies and makes great New Mexican food. Tia is 89 years old. For the last 15 years, I have heard how great her cooking was ... was because her health has prevented her from cooking and me from sampling her legendary cooking. Except that yesterday, everyone at our table of three ordered the tacos with carne adovada loaded with red chili. And, my husband said it was just like Tia used to make. A couple of interesting notes: New Mexican food is like a good beef stew ... it's not about plating, it's about eating. But, at Teofilos, they put effort into the plating. Also, when they asked whether we wanted crispy or soft taco shells, crispy didn't mean corn. The fry on the tortillas was perfect. For me personally, I loved the art. Their art is not like the typical "artist of the month" variety. They must have a curator.
