I'm no particular order: Fabulous! #1 the salsa is legit! I mean all the flavors are right where they are supposed to be with the heat level at a good medium. It's not chunky and it doesn't break your chips.... Super important! #2 Denise my server, on point. She is so friendly and just so bubbly. She got a little busy, as we came in a wave of 5 tables, but everyone was chill about it. She was super quick, even with the tiny rush. She was very pleasant and so polite! The busboy was very helpful in getting waters and chips and salsa. He was also very kind with checking on tables in between the food being dropped off and Denise coming back. #3 Sopaipillas are as big as my head and I will tell you YUM! Their honey is fresh and good! And yes, you must douse your sopa in honey! What a nice treat! #4 green Chile has a ton of flavor.... It did burn my mouth a little bit... This is a real family business, so sometimes there is a wait, so go before you are starving and order a beverage (wine-irita was a fun treat!) while you wait! everyone is always so nice, You can see it's a neighborhood spot, which is a ringing endorsement! Finally get to check this historic New Mexican restaurant off my list! Walking in we were greeted and seated in a very bright dining room. The service here was really good except for one thing. We ran out of chip's before we finished our salsa and guacamole. The waitress didn't come back til she brought our food so we never got a chance to ask for more. The tacopilla is a large fry bread folded in half full of beans and your choice of meat for $1.75 more. It was full of guacamole and sour cream and came with a side of both red and green chile. I thought it was really good. I ordered a chile relleno on the side and it was the one thing I really didn't like because it seemed to be of the frozen box type of rellenos. I don't believe it was freshly made. Lots of restaurants use these types of rellenos. Anyhow, I ordered some sopapillas and I'm not going to lie to you, they were the best I've ever had. They were soft, fluffy and sweet before I even put honey in them! I ate the whole basket! I've never had natillas and when I asked the waitress about them she brought us a bowl of it for free! I now like natillas! This was a great restaurant to come to for the first time today. I'd definitely come back even though it was a little expensive. $48 for me and my daughter before tip. It took over 35 minutes to get our lunch and when we brought home 2 pints of Natillas to eat, they were spoiled! Everything - the salsa, the cheese, the guacamole - was very tasty - even the chips were crispy and flavorful. For main dishes, I ordered the Beef Fajitas and my wife ordered the 3-Taco Plate - both meals were perfectly cooked - and the portions were big! We weren't planning on dessert, but their "Yum Yum Cake" sounded intriguing - and it was indeed very Yummy Yummy! Service was excellent and prices extremely reasonable. Had lunch here today. They didn't have tortilla chips or chicarrones. So I ordered enchiladas. The food was ok. My husband ordered fajitas and he said it was ok the guac was blackish. Things have really changed since my last review of this place. The prices have really spiked, and the portions have decreased in size. Don't get me wrong, I understand the need for price increases at most restaurants but when you order a carne adovada plate, you usually expect to get a decent serving of carne adovada on your plate. Where you used to get a serving big enough to have a take home box, both my guest and I left rather dissapointed, but with a very BIG check. The restaurant building it self is very cute and has a historic Hispanic vibe to it even tho it's not a very old building. Abuelita's is a such a cute place to eat and shop! The food is just plain good and you really can't go wrong with that. The servers are always very friendly and do their best to be accommodating. The chips and salsa should be delicious, because its a new mexican joint right? Eh, I always find it to be just okay. They chips aren't the best and the salsa has more dices tomatoes in it then I care for and not quite enough, if any, heat. Hey, that's okay, I don't come for the salsa. One my most recent visit with the work fam, I ordered the special, a bowl of their green chile stew. it was good, but could have used more pork. I will say I might have got four to five pieces, in the whole bowl. But I would be lying if I were to say it didn't hit the spot. My appetite hadn't quite come to a head yet. Otherwise. I would have ordered their Chicharronnes Bean Burrito! Dude. It's the bestest! Like, so good. Indulgent. So flavorful, crunchy, fatty (because let's face it, it's FAT!). I'm salivating. With red chile. Just go. Do it. You won't be disappointed. Let's see, some other really good points of interest. The patty melt. I've not had it myself but am told it is perfect. The bread is toasted up/fried to just the right crispyness and they are very generous with the cheese. Also, it should be noted that their chile rellenos, are ridiculous. Hugeness with a nice and fluffy, yet crunchy batter. Safe room for dessert if you must but I will be honest. I don't know what they have, if anythings. Perhaps ice cream? Or natillas? One day I may venture to find out, I just never have room for that none sense. if you need some time to deflate a bit on your way out. We have been going here for years. After today I was so disgusted we will no longer give them our business. We waited over 20 minutes for our order to be taken which was never taken. Mean while people who were seated after us had there order taken and served their food. The waitress keep walking by us like we weren't even there. She was really rude to us. All of our past dining experiences have been positive - until last weekend when one of us was denied entrance to the restaurant because we didn't have "documentation" to prove that a service dog was a service dog. Tried to explain, but they didn't want to hear it and told us to leave. We reached out to a local advocacy group and their educational consultant talked to the manager to explain the law, including "you can't ask for documentation", but he said it is his restaurant, he can deny service to anyone, and he can ask any question he wants - even thought that is in violation of federal law. (You can only ask 1) Is this a service animal? and 2) What is/are the specific task(s) that the dog provides.) Reports have been made to the Governor's Commission on Disability, the New Mexico Attorney General's Office and the Department of Justice. read more

After being seated, it took about 12 minutes for a server to take our food orders. If it was busy I could understand. But the place was almost empty. I had such hi hopes for this place but alas, it did not fulfill my hopes. The service was fantastic spot on great! The chips and salsa chip Bowl was very small. The salsa was very good. The main course was the issue. I ordered steak and enchiladas, Christmas style. When the steak came to me, it looked amazing smell great even. Then I started cutting into it and it was tough. Was one of the toughest pieces I had ever tried to eat. Then when I finally did get a piece cut from it, I put it in my mouth and instantly I knew that it was a freezer burnt piece of beef.
