Je suis le premier?…read more I've had it on my radar screen to write a review for AMT, Agence Metropolitaine de Transport, for a while, imagining someone would have already done so. Instead, here I am, being the FTR greater Montreal's train network for its "trains de banlieue," which I could have deduced from the context, and the map one sees in some Metro stations, as being "trains for the suburbs," or its commuter rail network. Most tourists to Montreal will probably remain unaware of the AMT trains, unless they are at the few intermodal stations at which the Metro (STM) also operates or they happen to see the AMT map, possibly because maps beckon. It would even be more unlikely that tourists would ride an AMT train de banlieue. For most tourists, the Metro and the buses are more than sufficient. However, the greater Montreal area is quite vast, with a fair number of its 3.5 to 4 million inhabitants living in the further out suburbs on the "West Island," on the Rive Nord (north shore), and on the Rive Sud (south shore). The Metro has gone to the Rive Sud for quite a while now, but barely into Longueuil. In recent years, it has been extended off the Ile de Montreal into Laval, which sits on another huge island, but is not on the actual Rive Nord. That said, the commuter trains of AMT pick up the slack in getting those folks to the heart of Montreal or some key intermodal stations not quite in Montreal's center. There are a total of 6 AMT lines and, according to the map, their tentacles are fairly amazing, both in terms of distance and causing one to realize that some Montreal area folks live quite a ways out of town. The map of the system is linked below: http://www.amt.qc.ca/Media/Default/images/section7/Nouvelles/2014/carte-reseau-amt-nouvelles-couleurs-haute-resolution.jpg The map professes to clarify things ("plus claire," yeah, sure) yet, unless one is already familiar with the Metro layout, the network map is a little unclear where the Metro's network is superimposed onto that of AMT. Two things are certain, though. First, the map will clue in the observer that the layout of the Montreal area is quite interesting and there are waterways to traverse. Second, the map will clue in the observer that the terms "West Island" and Montreal Est are misnomers, since the Ile de Montreal sits at about a 45 degree angle in the middle of the Saint Lawrence River and the concept of north-south-east-west was probably adopted for the sake of simplicity and convenience. I like the AMT. I especially like the funky bi-level trains used on the Ligne Saint-Jerome, manufactured for them by Bombardier of Canada in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Interestingly enough, these are the same types of train cars typically used in Sunbelt locations, such as L.A.'s Metrolink, San Diego's Coaster (with its "surf's up, dude" graphics), and South Florida's Tri-Rail. I'll cap off my assessment of AMT, Agence Metropolitaine de Transport, at 3 stars. It is definitely A-OK, and then some. I'm taking away a star because the pricing is high when purchasing an individual ticket from one of the further out destinations, since the fares reflect fare zones. Thus, some sort of a monthly pass has to be the way that those who commute on AMT's trains de banlieue pay for the service. I'm also taking away another star for the limited and/or infrequent hours and that, owing to logistics, some trains to Centre-Ville head to Gare Centrale (Central Station) while others, such as Ligne Saint-Jerome, head to the Lucien-L'Allier station, still in the Financial District, albeit a little west of the city center. As for the hours, they stop running at about 8 p.m., and offer minimal or no service on weekends, such that someone who has a monthly pass and wants to go into Montreal to shop, dine, or for entertainment would be unable to do so on the train. I could see this as being inconvenient when there is inclement weather. However, AMT's trains de banlieue are in place and make living further out yet working in Centre-Ville feasible without congesting the roadways, allowing one to drink coffee or tea, get some work or reading done, and watch the snow fall.

The train driver was nice enough to clap at us like we were cattle before leaving, i did try to signal to him that we were having trouble with the machines (they constantly have problems with cards and RARELY accept cash). I have waited many times on a platform, with no covering or benches, in -30°C weather for a late train. I don't see how 2 minutes in July was too long for a few passengers, experiencing issues with YOUR TICKET MACHINES, WHERE THERE ARE NO ATTENDENTS TO HELP, was too long to wait. They left us all behind. The machines should be on the train or at least on the platforms. This was in Vaudreuil on a Sunday night. There should be train service on the weekends that is not at dinner time (6:45). There is NOTHING after 7pm on weekends. Who is this service for? Only people traveling Monday to Friday in the morning or at night time on peak rush hour. The rest of us are screwed. Do better!

The map clearly labels the different stops, but just like any other city buses, they only stop if there are individuals at the designated bus-stops and/or if someone requests that stop. Make sure you have your map ready or know exactly when to ring to get-off. Entrance is spacious with stairs leading down to the ticket booth where I ended up asking for help and practicing my French at the same time. Unlike NYC subway stations, Montréal's are ALL staffed and you have the option of self-paying at the kiosk or paying with the ticket person. Now I truly know- how New Yorkers feel about tourists. But this is what sets Montréal from NYC apart every time for me: not one single person rushed us. No one was huffing and puffing and talking under their breath. Much less, the person at the ticket booth, wasn't cut and dry and went the extra mile to even circle where to hop off from the Sherbrooke Line. Merci! We eventually bought 2 Round-Trip Métro cards for $12. The chip in the card allows you to swipe on their Turnstile scanner and you can load and reload funds in it as you go. I was highly amazed at how clean Montréal's Métro system is maintained with super wide platforms at that! But I was more impressed with Montréal's outrageously quiet rail. Freaking amazing. Montréal never ceases to amaze me!

As a New Yorker, I could say (fortunately!!!) this place is no Port Authority. Presently, part of it is under renovation, so the amenities also include a couple of small places to eat, a barber, and place to change money. Limited to seating to wait for your bus, this does have access to lockers to rent to store luggage for travelers... that is once you show your ticket to the Ticket Counter. If you have a long wait until your bus, get a token to check your bag into a locker and take a walk down more scenic Rue Ontario 1/2 block away.

While all bus stations I've visited in Canada are cleaner than the US bus stations I've been in ( Philadelphia , Buffalo , Port authority in NYC , San Francisco ) this is by far the cleanest and least offensive of the Canadian bus stations ( including Toronto , Niagara , and Québec City). The people working here were extremely friendly and I felt extremely safe catching a bus back to the states around midnight .

They changed the place around but made easy signs for you to get to the quadrants of your bus. The only major problem here is theres no heated closed system for winter. Our room didn't have an incredible view of the city but the room itself made up for it. Bed was very comfortable, beautiful shower with all the toiletries, and spacious. We loved our stay in this room! We absolutely LOVED the rooftop pool which was heated and had an incredible view of the city. The pools closes at 10pm so we definitely made use of it for those night time views of the city while we were swimming! The bar/ restaurant was fantastic as well. Though we did not eat there the bartenders were top notch. I asked for the cocktail of the day and the bartender was so excited saying this will be the best drink of your life. When he was making it you can tell he was a professional with all the steps going into this trip. When I saw he even decorated the foam I was beyond impressed. This was definitely the best drink I had in Montreal! Outside of the hotel amenities one thing that sticks out is the location to old Montreal. Everything is in walking distance and it is a quick walk to some amazing cafes for breakfast and a 10 minute walk to Old Port and metros. I would 100% recommend this hotel if you are visiting old Montreal. We had a fantastic time!

Of the 2 Hyatt's in the area, while the other one was actually in an even better location, this one wasn't bad, and it had services more in line with what I wanted. My first night there, I had issues with my room. I could not get the room cool, and there was an intermittent but non-stop buzzing in the wall in-between the bed and the bathroom. The next morning, when I asked about possibly moving to a different room, I was told they were fully booked, but if I came back after 2pm, something might become available. I came back around 2:45, and rooms were indeed available. The second room had no problems, and the rest of my stay in that room was very comfortable. The parking garage ($25CAD/night if not using Valet) was awkward to drive to from the main entrance, but it was otherwise convenient, with unlimited in/out, as long as you had your ticket validated at the desk each time. But since the hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the Metro, I had no need to go out in the car at all until checkout. The pool is on the roof of the 14th floor. It's small for a pool but adequate, with plenty of lounge chairs at the pool level, more chairs and tables nearby, and evidently a pop-up bar that never managed to be open around the times I was there. The hotel's restaurant/bar is very nice, and I reviewed it separately. Perhaps this is my new favorite hotel in Montreal? We shall see.
