The floor and counters are made from old bowling lanes. The wood creates a warm and inviting space, perfect for a tasting or to share a bottle. Many rave about the hybiscus wine, which I did enjoy, and the Pinot Noir Rose. But I'm a big, bold red drinker so my fave was their Syrah. It was definitely the darkest and most full bodied of their reds with notes of blackberry. blueberry and boysenberry. Nice and jammy with a hint of pepper. Lanphere Cellars, formerly Oregon's Best Wine, opened just a few years ago and I discovered them while taking a Sunday drive. This is a family owned winery and the service is warm, friendly, and knowledgeable If you want to get out of Portland for a fun afternoon or if you are driving down I-5 near Wilsonville, definitely stop by!

We visited during a Wine Share month, a great way to discover new wineries without any risk. The Garden Cottage tasting room on the lower level of the property was not open in February so we enjoyed our tasting in the home. literally. We sat in the living room on couches around a coffee table while the adjacent dining room was being utilized by a party of 8. it was a great vibe, warm and inviting. Our host explained they use regenerative farming and winemaking processes. Their wines are aged in clay amphora casks, something we had never heard of, which imparts unique, earthy characteristics. Since the clay allows for a slow oxidation, the wine has softer flavors without the oak derived butter, vanilla and spice flavors. It's a middle ground between the oxidation of oak bottles and the more sterile stainless steal. We enjoyed the education and the wines! Would love to come back in the spring or summer for the full Garden Cottage experience. Since this is a small, family owned winery, tastings are by appointment only. Their website has the link.

Perhaps selfishly I was trying to keep it a secret to protect my stash access to some of my favorite wines in the region. Only 3 miles away from our home, Twill has been our local favorite winery for over 5 years. A small and intimate venue, every attention to detail has been considered and engineered into their presentation and guest experience. They treat you like a member of the family, caring much more about you than profit. Rare in this world. It has been the location of my daughter's wedding and engagement party. And no doubt more family or professional events if/when we're in need. Molly and Daryl are the most charming and warm "neighbor vintners" we know. No pretentiousness. All passion and commitment to excellence. So let's get to the wine. Our favorites have been the Steelhead Pinot (retired), their 2021 & 2023 Color of Orange and their 2022 Willamette Chardonnay. Add to that - the 2019 Johan Vineyards and Bracken Pinot Noirs.....WOW! And they also recently added fabulous appetizers (we loved the almonds and olives) - you could spend a beautiful satiated afternoon with your favorite people - leaving with rested and glowing happy faces.
