They're honest, fair, and truly customer-first I got quotes from three different shops and Terry Sayther had the best pricing by far, and not because they cut corners. They quoted using accurate book hours, use OEM parts, and were completely transparent about everything. What really sets them apart, though, is their integrity. They were the only shop that told me my specific issue was actually covered under BMW's extended warranty. Not only that, they even walked me through exactly what to say to BMW to get it approved. Most shops would have happily taken my money instead. Nicole was absolutely amazing to work with. I only recently discovered Terry Sayther Automotive when the shop I had used previously stopped servicing Jaguars because their Jag technician left. (I will only use the Austin Jag dealer's service department as a last resort.) My experience with Terry Sayther has been positive. They have performed three repairs on my 2013 XF and there have been no surprises on cost or timing. And it's nice to see other Jags there for service. the way I evaluate a shop before doing any larger jobs is to try a few small things ideally some that requires "off label" solutions. My experience here is a mixed bag. Some great some left my blood boiling and me losing a good amount of trust in the shop. Makes me hesitant to use them for something major like the big 3 on a M3 or doing a manual conversion. read more

Just wanted to give a shout out to these folks. They really know their way around a BMW!! I have a 2013 BMW that had a check engine light on and was running kind of meh. Took it to the dealer who gave me a 7 page report of problems that cost more than $6k needing to be addressed soon or immediately. Also they were not sure what was really causing the check eng light to come on. Took it to Terry's, they said it needed a thermostat sensor and front bushings replaced. cost abt $1,100. Rhett Hubertus is an excellent service advisor. I really appreciate the help he gave me. Our 2008 was having transmission problems, and with over 220k miles, I needed an honest and reliable estimate on how much it would cost to repair. Rhett and his mechanic did a thorough assessment of every problem of the car. It turned out the cost for repairs was more than the x5 was worth (car has body and is pretty beat up inside). And even though I didn't go ahead with any repairs, Rhett didn't charge me anything for quite a bit of diagnostic work. The report for repairs was very thorough and must have taken more than an hour for a mechanic to put together wit pictures of every problem. This place is just OK results-wise you can get better service and for less elsewhere. They charge 2x retail value on the parts that they use which is on the extreme high-end (read: practically unheard of) as far as upcharge for parts goes. Then their hourly rate is $180 which is basically dealership rates, yet for that money, you'd expect they at least know how (or care) to properly reinstall a muffler- which they did not in my case and left the right muffler hanging sloppily by only one hanger. It was quick fix but it doesn't instill much confidence on the attention to detail they may have conducted on the more critical and less visible items that were worked on. read more

Without hesitation they assembled my parts, giving me the assurance that it was done right. I was billed less than one hour labor for the work -- more proof that this company IS seriously customer friendly! Go in for an oil change and save $50 as a new customer. More valuable than that is the complete assessment of all systems on your vehicle that they will provide, with actual photos and professional evaluations of how serious the issue is at the present time. The atmosphere is definitely "family," and I don't mean the kind of family that hires dysfunctional cousins. More like a NASCAR family -- competent, professional and enjoying their roles. I've been taking my E90 BMW and before that my E46 BMW to Terry Sayther for years. I've always received fair and competent service from this shop. Rhett has been my direct contact here lately and his guidance is always top notch. Years ago I recall an instance when I took my black E46 in to the shop with a constant whirring sound from the blower motor. Terry's guys pointed out that we were in the middle of one of the coldest spells of that winter (teens and single digits Fahrenheit) which might have something to do with the performance of the motor. They told me to wait until the temperatures warmed up a bit and to come back if the noise persisted. Sure enough the noise went away as the mercury rose, and the AC system on that car worked fine for the rest of the car's life. Terry Sayther is my first choice for BMW repairs. I cannot say enough good things about this shop! First and foremost, all of the employees are so kind and seem to genuinely enjoy their work. They take the time to listen to what I need and what the issues are. They offer the right solutions the first time, instead of making assumptions and getting it wrong and then charging more money to fix those mistakes. On top of that, their work is top-notch and very affordable! They do what they can to save some money, and that is very appreciated! As a side-note, the classic BMWs that have been restored in the shop are neat to look at and add a really nice touch. I cannot say enough amazing things about this automotive repair shop. I have a 2016 LR4 that is an excellent condition and has only ever been serviced at the Land Rover dealership. However, my transmission light came on and when I called Land Rover to get an appointment, I was told they would not be able to see my car for at least two weeks and there were also no loaners available until February....over a month wait! Insane! My husband recommended that I try Terry Sayther as he always sees high end cars being serviced there and he had also heard great things about them. I drove there immediately and chatted with Nicole who was awesome! I told her about my check light and right away she took a little machine to do a quick diagnostic check and it was not as bad as I initially feared. We were leaving for the holidays so I left my car with them for a week where they performed a thorough overall check of my car and then I received a text with a full diagnostic report equipped with scores. From the first day, Nicole was very upfront and honest and there were no surprises or hidden charges. I paid over the phone and was able to pick up my car after hours. It was a seamless process and being that my car is out of warranty, I will definitely take my car back to Terry Sayther for any future issues. read more

I have used Terry Sayther multiple times for oil changes because it's right in the neighborhood. Now they won't service my car because "it's too old." It's a 2004. Nothing broken, just want a coolant flush after I installed a new thermostat (it's a mess to do yourself and air purging a challenge for novice mechanics). My experience with this shop is a little disappointing. A week before arriving to Austin, I spoke with an employee at Terry Sayther Automotive regarding a vehicle I was purchasing here in Austin, Texas.  The reason I called them was because the owner/seller said she has had the car maintained here since she's owned it.  The gentleman I talked to remembered this vehicle and said it has been maintained here since 2007.   I asked a few questions about the car and they confirmed they saw the car regularly and he said it was in great shape mechanically.  With this statement I decided to forgo a PPI at another shop and fly into Austin.  Reason because was 1. the car was relatively inexpensive, 2. it sounded like this car was well maintained by Terry Sayther Automotive, what can go wrong right? The moment I flew into Austin, the story changed.  Immediately after seeing the car, the car had a CEL and because it was a MINI/BMW (R52 JCW MINI) I scanned it was ISTA+ and it showed a vacuum leak.  To avoid a fluke, I cleared it and it came right back.  With minimal equipment I had, I traced it to the gasket that goes between the supercharger and the inlet tube.  I spoke with Rhett and for some reason he was convinced it was the throttle body at fault and said the car shouldn't have any other issues because it was well maintained.  Although, he did promise to take a look at the car in the morning. Upon further inspection I found a lot of things wrong with the car that contradicted Terry Sayther's employee opinion of "well maintained".  Leaking valve cover, leaking power steering lines, leaking oil pan, leaking engine mount, worn control arm bushings, etc.  I basically wouldn't have made the trip all the way out here if I knew this was the case. There were a few things that I spotted that Terry Sayther repaired and it was done incorrectly, and some was just done plain sloppy.  Some of which I was able to correct for the owner in a matter of minutes which should be embarrassing for the shop owner.  As someone who is meticulous with how his maintenance and repairs are done I would pass on this shop and go elsewhere. read more

I was in the process of driving cross country in my E39 M5 when I noticed a scraping sound coming from one of my rotors. This shop was able to take me in on super short notice, replacing the pads & rotors the day after I dropped the car off. Nichole was very courteous and accommodating, keeping me updated about the process. I also appreciated the detailed free inspection, complete with photos and descriptions of the other issues with my car. Well I got the speaker installed that Terry Sayther quoted me for $120. I went to Custom Sounds and they installed it for $35. I took my car to German Auto Center to give it a once over. They did not find a thermostat or water pump leak. They said there was an o-ring leaking oil not the pan. This is a minor leak. They also said that I had a tear in a boot and it would be less than $100 for parts and labor. I had German Auto Center (183 near Lamar) fix some pulleys that were making noise. They did the work for $300 parts and labor. Although I cannot remember the exact amount , I am certain that Terry Sather's quote was much higher. read more

For as much fun as it is to drive a Mini (four dollars a gallon...*hello!*), if you buy one new you're presented with an interesting conundrum: drive to the nearest dealership (that would be in San Antonio), or find some place local to take care of what ails your wheels. Since I'm outside of warranty on some items, I decided to give this place a shot. Likely the most important thing to remember here is that you essentially *have* to get here before 8 am to get in line. These guys are pretty honest about the fact that they fill up fast first thing in the morning, and they're not kidding: I showed up at a quarter till and was fourth in line. So I settled in for a wait while they took care of those in front of me, and all told it took me an hour and a half to get things wrapped up. The great news is that my car drives like it was brand new, and though they found some other stuff worth addressing, no one gave me the full court press about taking care of everything at once. It was a pleasant experience, even with the wait, and the entire staff seemed to really love what they do for a living. And that makes a huge difference. 'Cause you wanna make sure if you camp out for awhile, you'll be thrilled with the way your wheels come back to you. And the way this morning went down, the sun is shining through the moonroof already. read more

Rhett, Nicole and Duncan and all the other techs at Terry Sayther's are absolute ROCKSTARS! Love taking my 2011 M3 there for any work, be it maintenance or repairs! Most recently, I had my DCT trans serviced there and everything went off without a hitch. The repairs on these cars will generally be expensive, however these folks will let you know exactly what is wrong, what it would take to fix it rather than locking you in to some absurd sum of money, like a dealer would. I have recommended this shop to all the folks that own a mini or a BMW, most recently a new neighbor at my new place who has a BMW 328i E90 where he said he needed service done. Technically I didn't give them money so I guess I am not a customer but they did look at my mini cooper. They offered to put in a car battery for a sixty dollar service charge and then told me I need to replace the serpitine belt . After their recommendation I took my car to 2 shops both told me the belt wasn't even really that bad yet .I was able to get the battery installed for Free at pet boys saved myself sixty bux.i just want to say terry sayther is typical car shop stereotype tries to take advantage of female clients . The reason why I gave them 2 stars is because they do offer shuttle service .also when I left what was running DANGEROUSLY low was my antifreeze did they say anything no I had to filled it myself once I decide to check my car fluids ... So my exhaust fell off. Such an ignominious thing to start my week off with, but it happened. Now, I know old BMWs are notoriously hard to work on from personal experience - I tried to replace the oil pan on this E28 1988 535i, and it involved removing the entire front subframe. o.O So I wasn't about to try to do any other work on this car after that misadventure, and I resolved to find a place. Yelp being the source for all good things (and bad opinions), I decided to try out Terry Sayther's place based on the good reviews about quality service, which matters much more to me than cheap prices. So I had the tow truck drop the car off there over the weekend, when the shop was closed, and delivered the key by hiding it somewhere about the car. I called the shop Monday morning around 10, and they had correctly assessed the problem. Interestingly, they had already put the car up on a lift, looked at it, and found every little thing wrong. For the list: Broken exhaust pipe Tie rods have play Power steering pump pulley shaft is bent Lower power steering fluid AC doesn't blow cold No radio They described each thing to me in detail. As a car guy, I know enough to know they weren't lying. It also helped that I knew about all those things (except the tie rods) already. And you know what? They didn't try to con me into anything. They said "We filled up the power steering fluid, which should help for a while, and let us know if you want to do something about it - we can swap it for around $450. No need to replace the exhaust - take it to B&B muffler and they should be able to weld it back together. No reason to pay for a new exhaust over this." *Make Scooby-doo inquisitive noise and insert here* Yep, folks, they could've gotten me to buy an exhaust, but instead, they sent me over somewhere else to get the work done for less! And you know what my diagnostic fee was? $20, which including checking everything, tying up the exhaust so I could get the car to the muffler shop, filling my power steering fluid, and generally being nice guys. Terry and his staff personally oversaw everything, and were Texas friendly to me. In all, I would recommend Terry's shop for any work on your BMW or Mini. A hardworking, upstanding guy who practices honest business - what a refreshing thing! read more

Terry Sayther Automotive is an auto repair shop that works on BMWs and MINIs exclusively. Now let's imagine for a moment what the stereotype is for BMW repair shops (mainly dealers). Here are a list of things that come to my mind: 1. Free Starbucks and pastries. 2. A dedicated "service liaison" to hand hold you through item 3. 3. Prices so high it takes time for the mind to comprehend just how much of your money they are about to take. When you do come to grips with the price, it makes you want do very bad things to your.... 4. Free BMW loaner car! 5. Extra "required" repairs that they mysteriously find in the process of fixing your problem. Here's the great thing about Terry Sayther. HIS SHOP HAS NONE OF THE THINGS LISTED ABOVE. You call his phone number and you're greeted with "This is Terry." Yes, the man who owns the shop answers the phone as well as any questions you may have about BMWs or service. I've taken my car here a few times when there's a job that I don't have a tool for or that requires a lift. Each and every time they've been very helpful, never gave me the hard sell on "required" work, and were more than happy to answer my barrage of questions regarding projects that I'm working on. The only downside of this place is that they're generally pretty busy, so it can take a little longer than you might expect to get your vehicle back. It's definitely a non-pretentious shop with smart people and good attitudes. When there's BMW maintenance that requires special tooling, this is the place I go to. (unless of course, the dealer will do the job for the same price... in which case, why not flog the free BMW loaner car? this is EXTREMELY rare though..) read more

This shop employs a criminal defense attorney. Why have a criminal defense attorney you say? Because people take businesses to court when they refuse to be responsible, and businesses for whom the truth is insufficient to achieve a clear-cut victory in court employ attorneys. I gave this organization a chance after-the-fact to be responsible finally and cover the damages they caused, admitted in court, and that the judge agreed with, and was told rudely to call their criminal defense attorney, who is still actively representing the company. Innocent parties without legal issues generally do not keep criminal defense attorneys around. The judge said I proved 50% liability, so if they are interested in providing justice and being fair and ethical, they may cover and pay for the 50% of the over $5,000 in damages realized, or at least the cost of the failed repair, $1300, which Terry had initially offered through a court-appointed mediator, admitting the failure of the repair, but then failed to provide the refund, effectively accepting responsibility while simultaneously refusing to be responsible. I believe in justice, and would prefer that one day this shop finds a dictionary and looks up the words "responsibility", "honesty", and "professionalism", then puts them together into a coherent thought, "Given that we failed on our professional obligation to Michael and his 528i, were honest in court that we overheated his car multiple times and failed to exercise due diligence and that these factors in concert could have destroyed Michael's car, and the judge said that Michael proved 50% liability for the damages on our behalf, we have decided to be responsible, and cover the damages our poor work caused (or at least 50% as the judge noted Michael proved)". Until that day, justice will have been miscarried and this shop is without ethical character. The local BMW dealer charges just $20/hr more than here, guarantees all work completely, and you get a free rental for the duration of the repair. This means you won't have to take them to court if they break your car, they will just fix it as you drive a new model year BMW while waiting, plus the dealer's Yelp page is not littered with 1-star reviews. read more

I posted this elsewhere, but this deserves to be seen and read. Beware of this shop. They may be fine for routine things, but if it is a complicated matter, take it somewhere else. Their diagnostic skills are terrible. Short TL: DR version is that this company has no idea what they are doing and recommend repairs to your car that is costly and does not solve the problem. If you want to know why I say this, then read the full review below. I initially had my car taken to their shop because it died downtown and would not start. Cars have had this happen and so I accept it because a starter or alternator can die. They recommended replacement of alternator, voltage regulator etc. I agree because it makes perfect sense and they said it would solve my problem. I get it back and my car keeps dying and car gives error related to power and battery. I call them and they say that I need to come back and buy a battery tender and that it is common. I agree, which in hindsight is silly. I never had a problem nor have had problems with other high performance cars and the battery never dies, but this has issues within 3-4 days of not driving. They tell me it is common and correct and that I have to plug my car into the wall every night. Then my car starts having transmission issues where it locks itself. Car has SMG and fair enough, I've read this is an issue. It locks up and I call them and ask should I use my free GEICO towing or use theirs (and pay for it) because they know to call a flatbed and since transmission is locked, to not drag the car. Well they rec theirs and since it is at my house, I leave keys the tow truck comes and takes it. I later call tow truck company and it turns they dragged the car. What kind of BMW shop recs a tow company that doesn't know better? Well I paid them to replace the transmission and whatever parts they tell me to and they say it will resolve my issue. 1 week later it fails and I am stuck again and again it is towed to their shop. They say they will diagnose it and 1 week later they get back and want me to pay an extra 10k+ to replace portions of the engine because they believe it is engine related. I do more research and find out if the car is dragged with transmission locked, it likely causes this issue. This is the WORST PLACE to take your BMW. DO NOT TAKE YOUR BMW HERE. I'd rather pay dealer premium for knowledge vs the lack of knowledge from this shop. Buyer beware of this shop. read more

They have added a good waiting room area for customers, however, I prefer being outside as you get a glimpse of the good level of service. A BMW can be a fickle vehicle and they keep up on certain service that model might present. Also this repair garage has old Austin type charm and not the high glitz of new Austin. read more

I ask him it will take only 15 mins to change that halogen light. Then Terry respond " I need to take care of my guys, if you don't like you can go somewhere else" I was stunned to hear but not surprise about Terry Sayther. He doesn't care much about customer services. He doesn't care if you were the regular or walk-ins and I am his regular. I paid him and left. read more

Without getting into too much detail, let me just say that Terry Sayther is personally the most honest mechanic you will meet. There were some discrepancies between work performed on my vehicle and what actually needed to be done. Terry addressed those issues immediately and did not charge me for the work that did not need attention at that time. Furthermore, I've taken my car there so many times over the years and they are are quick and very knowledgeable about the problems. My first 1 star review. (long overdue) I owned an older (1998) BMW for years and recently sold it. Great car! Loved it! Bought a new one! After a few experiences with Terry Sayther, I found myself driving to far N. Austin for even an oil change at another independently owned BMW repair shop. Terry Sayther Automotive is within a mile of my house. What does that tell ya? I found the individual mechanics quite competent and pleasant. I think Ralph is a BMW genius. However, for that rare occasion you would be required to interact with Terry, the owner, I would rather drive in Austin traffic for 2 hours, impose on a friend to follow me and have 3 root canals before I allow Terry to either insult, humiliate or degrade me ever again. Terry actually asked me one day if I was "stupid"? Uh, no, I'm actually not stupid. Maybe he only does this with women? I don't know, nor do I care. After a few visits to Terry's shop I decided I would not subject myself to this curmudgeon ever again. Life is too short......... You've been warned! read more
