We have been going to Terrys bagels for years when we visit my moms house in Manchester. This weekend was no different but we haven't been here in a while. We were so excited to get bagels and the best chicken salad we ever ate. However when we got home with our order. The bagels were raw and the chicken salad looks like prison food from a movie set. Very bad experience with the new ownership. Had a gift card that was hand written from the past owners. When I went to use it, I was told by who I think is the owner that she did not write it and that I could have just gone and made it myself. I was shocked, I knew that she didn't write it and I tried to tell her that it was from the old owners but she kept questioning me and making me feel as if I was trying to use a fake gift card. If they were no longer excepting gift cards I would have understood, but there was no need to accuse a customer of trying to use a fake one and questioning them about the authenticity of the card. Another classic New Jersey strip mall with a bagel shop. Terry's was a great place. The sandwich was delicious although the bagel itself was not 5 stars. The owner was friendly and kind and you can tell she works very hard to make this bagel store successful. Clean and plenty of drink options. I've been coming here for years. Not the prettiest place but I could always count on a good bagel. I walked in a month ago and it had a different feeling. Nothing had to be said that it was a new owner. It was 7:15 am (they open at 7) and there were 2 people ahead of me. It took 10 minutes just to get to the register and place my order (a toasted bagel w cream cheese). I placed my order and the woman who I assume is the new owner took my order then shouted to the back "do we have any plain bagels?" This cracked me up since it was now almost 7:30 and there was not a bagel on display. I was told I had to wait another 5 minutes. Ok...I waited patiently and considered leaving but I already paid. Another 5 turned into 15!!! Now the line is growing, everyone behind the counter acted like they didn't want to be there, and service was incredibly rude. At one point, the woman was talking down to a younger guy working there. A gentleman finally got his order and said something of the slow service and she told him he didn't have to come back if he didn't like it. When she FINALLY called me, there was no acknowledgment of having been kept waiting, no apology, and acted like she was doing me a favor by making me a bagel. Which was TERRIBLE! The taste was not great, the texture was off, and she squished it so flat that it looked like it was sat on. Very disappointed! I went back 1 more time a month later just to give it a 2nd try. It was worse! 1 other person in the shop and it still took a while to be acknowledged and get the the same thing. The woman thanked me for my patience by saying "thanks for waiting bud" I felt that was unprofessional and condescending. Bagel still was not good so I will not be going back. read more

Love the new owners! They're so sweet, especially the woman who usually takes my order. Even when they're slammed I notice that she makes it a point to have genuine conversations with the customers and doesn't just brush them off after taking their order. I haven't noticed any huge differences in the bagels or my usual orders, so maybe they stuck with the original recipes or just make things similarly. NEW OWNERSHIP IS RUDE and quality has gone down. I've been here a half a dozen times or so and won't go back. Here is why.... After getting 1 of my 3 sandwiches wrong rather than re-making it fresh, they took the egg and meat and repurposed it to the new roll. How cheap can you be??? Then the female owner told me "if I wasn't happy I don't need to come back". Oh don't worry rude lady I won't. And I'll tell anyone who will listen not to go back either. You are selling bagels, not rare artifacts. I'll go to one of the 20 other places within a mile that do the exact same thing. Hopefully if they make a mistake like YOU did, they might take a shred of accountability and apologize and make it right. Food is always good here it's unfortunate I won't be returning, the owner is beyond rude. My mom asked him a question while he was cooking and he couldn't be bothered to turn around and acknowledge her. She asked him if he heard her and only then does he reply with an attitude "I heard you" and runs away like a child to the back and has his wife complete our order. Then he continues to huff and puff behind the counter. I've been in the store plenty of times and he's always like this, go be miserable somewhere else, you change the whole attitude of your staff when you act like that. If you don't care that the staff treats you like it's a major inconvenience to be at their business and just want your food then this is the place for you. I am actually a little weirded out by the low ratings but to each is own. These bagels are the best I have had in Toms River. I mean it to I show no favoritism or know anything about these people other then every-time I go in there the young girls treat me great and so does the two owner? (I could be wrong just the vibe I get.) their sandwiches aren't that skimp wawa sizzly quality it's an actual filling breakfast sandwich. Their cream cheeses are always great especially the veggie. They have awesome bagel flavors I suggest trying them all and if I'm not in the mood for a bagel I get it on a kaiser roll. Their younger girls working in there wearing sweatpants... I don't see how that affects the quality of their food but that's a little unfair. Everyone says the food is 5 stars but gives this place low scores as far as "customer service" goes. The reality is that you come to this place for a great bagel. If I wanted great customer service and mediocre bagels I'd go to any other place in this area. Plain and simple. If you have a sweet tooth and like dessert for breakfast, a not-toasted frenchtoast bagel is where it's at. It's sweet with a crispy exterior and a soft yeasty interior. Getting it toasted caramelizes the sugars and you're left with melty cream cheese, which is good but you may need to lick your hands clean afterwards - you wouldn't want to wipe the goodness away with napkins, would you? Every place also features cinnamon raisin but I feel like they really miss out on cinnamon flavors and this place doesn't. There's also the onion bagels and everything bagels, which I haven't tried but I believe there's a lot of flavor there since I've avoided kissing my boyfriend after he ate. If you don't prefer processed cheese then I would skip it. I'm just picky in that area when it comes to different cheeses and like a good melting consistency in a breakfast sandwich - think of the difference between fresh mozzarella sticks and one that's been sitting for 10 minutes. Very weird, I know. This place is you get what you get. It's good bagels without the "bubblegum" customer service. I've never heard of people turning away a simple bagel because someone didn't greet them with a smile to take their order. Ps. They have a sign inside of their cost for a bagel and small coffee versus other places prices. You can't beat the cravings of it. Great Bagels. I love that they have so many different varieties of everything bagels (rye, egg, whole wheat, multi-grain, and my favorite pumpernickel everything). I stop here every time I am in the area and bring bagels home to freeze. They don't skimp on the seeds, the bagels are so fresh, and if you get there early enough you'll get a warm bagel. I could not have been more surprised or pleased and Terry's is now my 'go to' place. The bagels are bigger and they don't skimp on the bacon.
