Excellent experience throughout our application process, move in, and now residency. Our Leasing Consultant, Aydiee Vaughn, went above and beyond to guide and support us through all of this. Everyone we have met, staff and residents, have been exceptionally nice. The property is gated, full of garden areas, flowers, trees and spectacular views of the city...especially at night. The maintenance crew has been here just to check and make sure everything is to our liking. BBQ area, heated pool, jacuzzi, cabanas, large community kitchen area, game area, pool table and more. And this community is close to 118 and next to a huge choice of restaurants and shops. We are very happy to have found Tesoro and are very happy here. read more

Noticed Justin W review is Karen's husband-Karen is the manager of Tesoro apartments how corrupt, just found out from resident still residing there. Resident told me things are going down under her leadership. She is gustopo on steroids. Rumor has it her husband has a shady past. Shapell Properties should do a background ck on her husband. If true she should be fired. The resident told me old lady fell Management personnel got there she ask them to call 911 they said they could not call under company rules. Been here for 3 years!!! Location is Great! Close to lots of restaurants, stores, and the 118. Amenities are nice. Pool is fantastic. There has been lots of renovations and improvements over the last couple years, which has made it even better. Staff is great!! Parking is a bit limited, but not too inconvenient. My suggestion: instead of reading and believing the RIDICULOUS complaints below.... come see for yourself. It's a nice place. Unfortunately, the residents here are not the nicest people by a long shot. I have seen and heard the way the tenets here treat people, especially the staff. Terrible!!! I have been living at Tesoro apartments for 5 months now and I love it. It is quiet and a peaceful place to live. They have private security that drives around to ensure there is nobody in the gated area that should not be. The grounds are very well kept up and overall very clean. My mom was a tenant for years. The safety, lighting, security and lack of locked doors is really bad. The leasing office manager is rude and she refuses to allow tenants to speak to her. Her assistant that the tenants call a bulldog (name starts with a V) is extremely rude and mean. V behaves like a bully and tries to enforce rules that do not exist and unfortunately some seniors are afraid of her so they obey her rules. I moved my mom out for the theft, safety and fear that V will take advantage of her. It is appauling that these two are allowed to manage seniors because their behavior is abusive and they are taking advantage of poor innocent seniors. read more

We recently made a complaint about our smoke detectors chirping over and over the previous night. The next morning we decided to visit the leasing office and bring it to the attention of the staff there. We were greeted by Aydiee, our leasing consultant, she immediately wrote down the problem to be addressed to the maintenance crew. The next day a maintenance member came and replaced our batteries on 2 of our smoke detectors. My wife and I were so glade and happy on how quickly they responded. Marilyn and Durga are such good workers. Whenever my lights turn off, I can always count on the two of them to come in a hurry and fix it. Marilyn does a lot of the plumbing work here and she always gets the water running again, whenever the water is turned off. I give them both five stars. read more

My mother in law has been living here for 8 years and hasn't reported many issues till last month. They misplaced her payment which she gave to the office in person. The office was apparently closed and they couldn't get to the checks and so days later they accused her of not paying her rent. The person told her that she can only pay with money orders. A week later they found the check. No apologies or any recognition Instead she was accused of paying late. She paid her rent again and put it in their box as required but she got accused that she didn't pay. No one answers the phone or knows anything. Very disappointed since it seems impossible to communicate with someone who is responsible. read more

I moved my recently widowed mother here about a little over a year ago. The experience has been good and Mom seems happy. She recently had some issues that she and I had to work out at the office. Loaded with discrimination I have a section 8 voucher that covers the rent for a two bedroom they have listed. When I called I was originally told they only take section 8 on a restricted basis the rep couldn't explain to me what that meant. And told me they would have leasing office call me. A few hours later they called and said they do take section 8 but only on certain units. Under SB 329 that's discrimination because they were refusing to allow me to apply for an apartment that I qualify for based sole on my source of of income to pay for the apartment. What's the purpose of saying you have retirement apartments but only for people that still work and make bank SMH management is a total scam. read more

Current management at the apartments is impatient and not courteous to the seniors that live here. I have lived here for a long time and the management have come gone. Some managers have been great but most have not. But the maintenance staff is great! I wish Shapell would pay more attention to the residence comments regarding the property. It should be run so that it is senior friendly, there is a difference how you treat seniors as opposed to young adults or others. Any instructions should be clear and they should not assume that all seniors have emails or cell phones. Many times communications are by email and only occasionally do they post notices that they send out. They recently made a change to the gate access and gave no advance notice, they sent an email regarding the change but the notice was incomplete and not thorough so that residents could make sure that visitors and caregivers had access. At one point I noticed eight cars lined up at the call box trying to figure out how to get in the gate since they no longer could use the access code that had been provided to residents years ago. We can no longer hang plants on the railings of our patios even on the first floor. We have had plants on the railings all over the community for years and suddenly with the new management we can no longer have plants on the railings. Of the patios. I guess they're concerned about plants on the upper floors falling but there's no reason why first floor residents couldn't have plants on the railings. Some plants need more sun. The plants add to the beauty of the community. What planting throughout the community are old and the end beginning to look kind of worn out and not as attractive as they were in the past. They probably need to be slowly changed out. read more

I lived there for 7 months and I had to break the lease due to mice and roaches infestation. I addressed the issue and the office ignored me. In addition, they disregarded my disability when I explained it to them so I was a victim of discrimination. The place look clean in the outside but once you live there, you find out how unhealthy and dirty this place is. The office people are unprofessional and you never see they and the cleaning crew are loud. I am asking for my refund and they never have it back to me or even responded to me. If you are a senior citizen and looking for a safe place to live, I recommend to look some place else. read more

Today's reality here is like something (bad) out of the Twilight Zone, unless you don't require respect and responsiveness from businesses you patronize and keep afloat. 95% of the residents are sweethearts. 95% of the office staff ("management" - choke) treat the residents like enemies. The outdated physical plant is in disrepair and unconscionable behavior from some vicious residents goes unchecked despite multiple reports and pleas for help. "The Office" obviously has been instructed to maximize profits; the staff are NOT there to ensure the comfort and safety of the residents. If there are dangers and problems, we seniors are on our own. If you are looking for a safe and comfortable home for yourself or your Mom & Dad, move on: Tesoro isn't it. Alex C is an amazing manager. He has been so helpful with getting my 85 and 87 yo parents placed in an apartment. There were a few issues over the last few months with power outages and elevators being down, but they communicated and did their best to get things back working. I am writing this on behalf of my 94 year old Father in law who rented an apartment at Tesoro in Porter Ranch since 2015. I turned over an empty apartment to Tesoro on 5/27/19. My father in law moved to Washington. I disputed a carpet charge. I was told they needed to replace the carpet and they agreed to credit us $125. It is July 2nd and the deposit refund has not been received. First we were told the check is lost in the mail and they need to reissue, bla bla bla... I have written numerous emails only to get the run around. Level of incompetency at that facility is infuriating. I wish I could file a complaint against them. In the meantime, the check is in the mail. You follow every letter of the law and still get the short end of the stick. #tesorosucks Talk about taking advantage of senior citizens. read more

There is no regulation here. Manager is able to change every thing in a second per her decision. They are rude and discriminating against new tenants. Visitor parking is a nightmare here. Although Visitor parking spot are vacant most of the time,manager doesn't give guest parking pass per tenant request. You can only have 12 visitor parking pass in a month. Two months ago I had my son in law studying in library, but manager ask him to leave, stating that library was only for tenant not their family member! read more

To Debbie/Vanessa from Tesoro Apartments, I appreciate your response here. I want to let you know I have called your office many many many times and even went up to visit your offices at the top of the hill many times as well. I actually walked out with one of your friendly appointments and even pointed to where one of the loud party people were making the noise each night and it still went on for many months without change. I will be happy to update my review if I see the problem has changed and stayed this way for awhile. Again the solutions are simple: 1. Put out notices to all Tereso apartment renters that they must close their windows and sliding glass doors after 10pm if they are going to be talking loud or having people over and making noise - instruct them that their voices are very loud and travel for blocks. I can tell you every single conversation they have at 2am. If they fail to do this, they will be fined and if they continue they will be evicted. 2. You need to randomly have your security park their cars on Sorrento off of Mason just above Avenida Palomar. e.g. just let the security sit in there cars from say 12am - 3am a few nights a week with their engines off and their windows rolled down to see who is causing the noise and knock on their doors and tell them to shut their windows and sliding glass. I believe you will find people will be more happy to rent your apartments and stay longer on their leases if they feel they can get a good nights sleep and be able to keep their windows open to feel the fresh breeze. Horrible place with very rude and not knowledgeable personnel. Also, there are not enough parking spaces for visitors, but "conveniently" there are no warning signs telling people they can't park at the common area parking spots, so what they do is tow away your car almost immediately without any warning and at your own expense, of course. When you come back, your car is gone, but again no signs telling you that you parked illegally and no info of a tow company that took your car. The only job the staff is good at is reporting your car to a tow company, that's all they do all day. But again, as I stated earlier, there is not one single sign saying that you cannot park here or that your car will be towed. So it's a very profitable and illegal business for the Tesoro management and the Howard Tow Company is Canoga Park. They even towed away the car of a potential resident who came to get more info on moving her mom to the Tesoro apartments. If you visit your grandma, grandpa, your mom, or if you are a caretaker, or a cleaning lady be sure to leave your car at home, get a cab because that's the only way to get to Tesoro Senior Apartments, because if you take your own car there are no parking at least for a mile. (No parking on Porter Ranch Drive at all, and no parking on Rinaldi.) Getting your car from a tow company costs $117, not to mention that you need to get there somehow, not a walking distance, by car - 10 min-15 min. Used to be a very nice place, not any more, something has changed drastically. Very sad, it could be the best place to live and to visit. read more

i lived at tesora for the last 28 months. when i moved in, nothing could be better....but moving out has become gut wrenching, accusational experience.....and it seems to be tied to their new manager Jorge......since Jorge has been on board, they have lost all of their top team members. not sure why, but they certainly are no longer their and those on board now deflect any challenge and refer to themselves as "leasing agents" and "not allowed to make decesions". i got my final statement in the mail and immediately noticed that they raised my last months rent by $370 even though i signed an extension allowing my existing rent. they also charged me a late fee of $50 and because Jorge was not there, could not tell me why there is a late charge. also, on this final statement, the first line at the bottom of the statement tells me that if i do not pay in 30 days that i will be turned over for collectionl. this statement came around 15 days after i moved out.....wow, what a way tosay thankyou a customer/tennant. yesterday, i did go to LA to take care of this situation because after leaving message, no one has bothered to return my phone call about the increase in rent and the late charge in my final months there, and since Jorge came on board, the entire place, as wonderful as it had been from day one for me, has dropped downhill faster than an olympic skier. people have been found sleeping under the stairs. the pool are is gross not to mention the gym. people do not clean up after their pets and some even seem to allow them to "do their thing" in the stair wells. the maintenace group are still a great groups of guys, but they are not happy with the changes either. tesoro provided me a wonderful home to use when i was in LA the few days of each month that i was there.....but the new management and the constant turn over of "leasing agents" is far from professional, at least in my opinion. so, i rate it a great home if you like stumbling on people asleep under the stairs and a general manager like Jorge.... i would suggest strongly, looking else where....because in senior living, i would think that you want a caring management team read more

I am a tenant who has lived at Tesoro for the past year and a half and have NEVER seen any of the things Don R. wrote about (people sleeping under stairs and dog pop in hallway). First of all, why would anyone (especially 55 and older) even use the stairwell instead of the convenient elevators on each floor? The stairs are not open but closed off and not even visible to tenants. So did Don make the extra effort to go and regularly inspect the stairwells looking for these alleged homeless people sleeping under the stairs? Also, the entire grounds, including the pool and gym, are always clean and attractive. Anyone can verify this without even going to the leasing office if they come to Tesoro and drive around the property. The pool in fact is rarely even used as it's seniors living here, many who are infirm. And while they may have lost some good leasing agents, they certainly have hired good ones. My leasing agent "Daniel" and is very friendly, always professional, and gets any needed service repairs performed quickly. The legitimate complaint anyone could make about Tesoro is the parking situation, but amazingly Don didn't even mention that. As others have stated, there are NOT enough visitor parking spaces and you have to get a "visitor's pass" from the office during business hours in order for a vehicle to park in one of these few visitor spaces. The only other alternative is that guests can park across at the street and the huge shopping center during their visit and then be transported over. But as to some reviewers saying they are "shocked" that their car got towed, I don't see how that is true when Tesoro has given each tenant multiple notices (I've gotten at least 3) detailing exactly how NOT to get your car towed and explaining what you need to do in order to park legally in any space. There are also signs posted all throughout the parking lot above the parking spaces warning people about getting towed if your car is not parked legally (meaning with an appropriate parking pass). So, while I agree the visitor parking situation is a significant problem, a person doesn't have to ever get towed if you follow the directions and notices. read more

My husband and I have lived at Tesoro Senior Apartments for almost 2 years. We have had an extremely positive experience and believe that whoever is lucky enought to find an apartment/home here is very fortunate. The new Management team, headed by Gina is wonderful and caring and are always willing to go the extra mile to help. They have planned monthly activities and these too have been great. It is rare to find such an amazing rental for seniors with lush landscaping, well built and kept buildings, lovely kitchens and a beautiful clubhouse and swimming pool for all to enjoy. It is gated and safe. You must come here to check it out!!! You will not regret it. One more thing is that the location is awesome - across the street from the Porter Ranch shopping center with markets, banks and restaurants plus. We have no doubt that you will enjoy living here. read more
