If I could give them a zero I would. Appointment at 12:00 I have to wait 15 minutes okay cool I get sometimes you get backed up. Finally sit down, brushes through my hair. Mind you I'm in a suit so I'm clearly at work since it's the lunch hour he asks what I'd like I say I usually get a one around the sides with a fade and the top styled. However this time I'd like to keep it longer maybe a two or three. He keeps brushing it and says maybe you need a stylist I'm a barber. Due to all the flagging and "talk" hype threads I actually went here for a hair cut. It's an old school barber shop, not some pussified salon. Troy and Ashley are real people and nice people at that. I used to go to Tony and Guy for a fifty to eighty dollar cut depending on what level the "stylist" had graduated to, from the Tony and Guy School. What a jip. Then I found a place, where for forty eight dollars you get tits in the face during the scalp massage (frigging hair wash) and a crap cut. Now, I'll wash my own hair, make a phone call, and get it cut for 25 bucks, from a straight up barber. Oh, and if you're pissed off cuz you have a shit job and have to squeeze in a cut on your lunch break... Maybe Troy will let you take a couple swings at his punching bag, that's hangin right there in the shop. This is a mans place, although they do do women (that's what she said). I didn't know it was appointment only when I walked in. Hannah was the only stylist there and I was the only customer. Fortunately for me she was able to give me a style cut. My hair is naturally curly and can get quite bushy/wavy. I had been growing my hair out since August 2013. I was in serious need of some hair maintenance. I found the perfect stylist! She really took her time and we discussed options that I could do. Hannah told me things about curly hair maintenance, and, gave me lots of information on taking care of it. For instance, I'm not a gel guy I only use leave in conditioner, she informed me I was putting the conditioner in the wrong way! *I am writing about my experience NOT the haircut* I would first like to say that I was pleased with my haircut. Most people will be reading reviews looking for answers about quality, the quality was fine. I want to express what others may not post about. The pricing of the haircut was completely unreasonable. Receiving a shave and a haircut for $68 is not ideal. Also it seems that the owner's business is all reoccurring customers. Good for him!! At least he has regular business that continues to come. But it's is sickening how he speaks about some of his customers behind their backs to others. I was getting a haircut with another barber next to the owner. My brother took his wedding party here to get hot shaves the day of his wedding. There were 5guys total, and 2 of our group got really great shaves from one of the barbers. The other one, allegedly the owner, tore up each of the 3 faces he touched. Some cuts weren't bad, but one of us got absolutely maimed. It was an absolute travesty. I was unfortunate enough to get the owner, and he was going against the grain and I could tell that blade hadn't been sharpened in a LOOOOONG time. We all finished up and they had the nerve to charge something like 35 bucks a piece for that garbage. I don't know what you're used to when you get a shave, but at that price, I would have expected a lot more. I've had better 10 dollar shaves, seriously. Again, the only thing saving this from a one star experiences were the 2 shaves that looked fantastic. Something needed to change about that owner's technique. read more

How hard is it to find a decent barber in this town that respects your time? I thought Testosterone might be it, but I guess not. Made an appointment online. I needed to get my haircut, shave my beard (leaving the mustache) and a mustache trim. Apparently, this option isn't available on their website, so I figured the closest thing was a haircut and mustache trim as those were the two things I was most interested in getting right. I happened to get out there early by about 20 minutes and when I stepped in I was told that my Barber was behind by about a half hour, so I decided to step out and have a beer across the street. I returned when it was time for my spot, but had to wait an additional half hour. So now I'm an hour beyond when my appointment was scheduled and finally get in the chair. When I explain what I want, I'm immediately told that "You didn't ask for a beard shave on the website, and I don't have time to shave you". Really? Maybe if my appointment had started an hour earlier (when it was scheduled for) you might have time to accommodate me? Not sure why I needed to make an appointment days in advance when it appears that walk ins were able to get my chair after I left. Made an appointment for another (well known) establishment while sitting in the parking lot. read more

I've been to this place twice. The haircuts here are classic. The barbers attention to detail is a refreshing change of pace from what I've experienced at salons. I like my hair to be styled messy. I love this barbershop and I like the proprietor (Troy King) as well. He is always pleasant with a positive attitude. If I wasn't already won over by Troy and his dedication to service I certainly became that way during the ice storm we had during Superbowl weekend. Troy was right there in his barbershop as usual when no one else showed up. This was a convenient time for him to stay at home with his family but he was right there ready to serve. How many barbers will actually discuss Lombardi principles with you when you sit down in their chair? Not any that I personally know. I love this barbershop because it's close to Downtown Dallas and it's by appointment only. Troy, the proprietor, can try to squeeze you in in a pinch if you call him day of but it's best to schedule online a day ahead of time. Parking is on the street so bring quarters with you. Troy is one of the few barbers that I've found that offers both head and facial razor shaves. He uses high quality shaving products and I never get razor burn. He is a perfectionist and will spend the time to make sure your haircut is symmetrical and looks absolutely perfect. Great place in Deep Ellum, and I recommend riding to Baylor Station and walking the block since parking is kinda uggghhhh in Deep Ellum, which is completely fun with me because I'm down with neighborhoods that aren't slaves to cars. Anyway, the door is hard to open, so don't make the mistake I made of looking like an idiot and knocking because you thin it's locked. The interior definitely feels like a guy's place without the scents and "Would you like a glass of wine?"s that high-end salons use as their distinguishing marks. Troy cut my hair, and he's a great guy. He was able to find something to talk about, and did it effortlessly. I never felt like that uncool guy that doesn't talk (although I think that would have fine too) and I didn't feel like I was straining to have a conversation. Haircut looks great. Whenever I travel for a business meeting which is only a few times a year, I like to make time for straight razor barber's shave. I searched Yelp and found Testosterone. I walked in and was met by Troy, (who I think is the owner) and is a very pleasant gent. I hadn't shaved in 4-5 days so he had his work cut out for him. The appt was at 3:30 but I didn't get into the chair until about 3:45. That's OK. I get it. Anyways, he used hot towels, and following a very peaceful shave with jazz playing in the background, I was able to feel my baby soft face again. The place is certainly not a high-end, Spa-like, country club feel. Its a little rough around the edges. However, I felt comfortable, welcomed and was treated like a king. First, the good: Hannah was friendly and gave me a good haircut. However, I probably won't come back. The owner wasn't friendly at all when I came in or left. It was awkward. The place is pretty cluttered and the floors and walls are in bad shape. That wouldn't be a big deal if a basic haircut didn't cost $30. I was shocked when she told me my total, but I guess it's my fault for not looking beforehand... I feel like for $30 it should be a better experience and atmosphere. I have had my facial hair for more than 4 years & never had anyone (other than myself) attend to it. My stylist, Kendall, admitted that he had recently joined the team at Testosterone, and will soon have his barbers certificate/license/whatnot, but performed liked a seasoned veteran. Troy, the owner/operator, was tending to a regular when I arrived, but he was super friendly and accommodating to new clients. They sculpted my bushwhacked face into something a bit more presentable, and even offered a service which I didn't know existed... Nose hair waxing. Sounds painful, but it really wasn't. Totally worth the experience, and I would highly recommend stopping by to see what these guys do. read more

While on vacation visiting family in Dallas I stumbled upon this unassuming Deep Ellum barbershop. As a salon owner in San Francisco, I thought it might be nice to stop in for a quick trim. You know, you want to look good in those family photos and as a business owner it's always nice to get out of your own shop and experience something new. Well, I walked in, Troy, the owner, was able to squeeze me in before his next client and before I knew it I walked out with the perfect fade including the traditional barber clean up - eyebrows, ear hair, etc. The conversation while in the chair was pleasant - Troy turned out to be a really nice guy and I enjoyed my time in his shop. If you are in Dallas and looking for a great barber I would definately give him a try! And, the $25 price was more than reasonable. Another stylist/barber - Ashley - was able to accomodate my partner at the same time. Honestly - his hair looks great! We got back to San Francisco after our trip and everyone is commenting on how nice it looks. He was even told he looks ten years younger. Great work here all around!!!! read more

Talk about a great local find! I had been traveling quite a bit lately and had to find a good spot in DC and NYC to get my haircut, but nothing compares to Testosterone Barbershop in my own backyard. The service is impeccable(Scalp Massage during shampoo), the look of the facility is rock star great (including the new HD Plasma that was being installed during my visit) and I've received numerous compliments from the haircut that Ashley gave me (kudos), and she's pretty nice to look at too. During a long move from Boston to Austin and in desperate need of a trim, I found Testosterone on Yelp and decided to give them a try. Ashley did a tremendous job, probably one of the best cuts I have gotten in some time. My general philosophy regarding hair cuts is: Unless I say differently, I should walk out with the same style (but shorter) that I walked in with and I shouldn't need to tell someone how to do it. That is that their job, not mine otherwise I would do it myself. Ashley achieved this perfectly. She has the skill level of what I would expect from an older barber that has been cutting men's hair for decades. With very little instruction, she gave a wonderful classic hair cut and didn't use all the usual annoying "stylist-speak" about adding texture or shaping. True to what I expect of a very high quality barber, the cut included trimming around my neck, sideburns and ears with a straight razor. No hot lather, but a great feeling cool balm. The casual atmosphere was not forced or fake, and everyone there was genuinely very nice. Without a doubt, the next time I am back in Dallas, I will be back. Why not five stars? Well, that would be attaining haircut nirvana and I cannot go higher than four after one visit. read more

5 stars is completely accurate. Needed a new 'do on New years eve. Not only were they open - it was a stellar experience. I booked about an hour before I turned up. The delightful and attractive Ashley welcomed me with a smile and wonderful, genuine banter. I'm usually as chatty as a stone during my haircuts, but I found myself volunteering all sorts of info about myself. A perfect haircut (all the more impressive after my vague directions) was followed by a shampoo and head massage that was about as an erotic experience as I've ever had during the daylight hours.
