Scheduled online for an eye exam and contact prescription and received a follow up email confirmation of the appointment (you aren't scheduled until you are confirmed). Showed up and my appointment was not in the system. Luckily I showed up early since paperwork was required. I managed to called back about 6min after the scheduled time to start the process. I think they get walk-ins as well so this location is pretty busy. They don't do the same level of sanitization as some other offices do (i.e. alcohol wipes on equipment prior to each use - oh well). Today, I saw dr Nadia for my annual eye exam. The office uses optomap which scans your eyes and gives the doctor a baseline on rx and eye health. I prefer it over dilation. Dr Nadia is wonderful. She recommended a new lens I hadn't tried before, and assured me my eyes are healthy, but slightly worse astigmatism. She listened and was empathetic towards my health history. Victoria was my optician; she gave me some really fun frames after I requested bright colors. She could tell based on my old frames what I needed for the new frame ones, awesome. After I selected my frames, she measured my pupillary distance with a marker, and I was all set. The office is clean and spacious. Busy on a Saturday, but the staff have a good system, and my wait wasn't long. I am thrilled with my new frames, and both staff and dr. Nadia explained my choices without pressure. Everything was going well on my exam cannot complain about the price either since I'm self-pay. They then took me to wait on my prescription told them I just needed the prescription no glasses. Well, I waited 55 minutes for the girls on the front to tell me they assumed I was "waiting on a ride". The office staff and billing department are extremely frustrating to deal with. I spoke with three different people about an $88.20 charge for a contact lens fitting my child never had. The doctor even agreed that she wasn't a good candidate for contacts at this time, yet they refused to listen and insisted on being right instead of hearing me out. After spending over a grand at this location, the lack of appreciation is shocking. Hidden fees for glasses and exams make the experience even worse. these guys have been totally unresponsive. My phone calls went to voicemail. I left two voicemails in a week. Never got a callback. I went in there were three people waiting and nobody at the front desk I even wrote them a snail mail letter, asking them to respond and still nothing I feel totally disrespected and ignored by these people and will find a new optometrist even though I think my old one at this location has left , leaving to new optometrists. I had been receiving care from this facility for 2-3 years now without a hitch. Once the previous doctor retired a new doctor came in to practice and she was reckless in her approach to examine my eyes. I let her know that there was an issue with my eye and that I wasn't sure that it was wise to get my eye exam done. She then dismissed what I said and continued to give me the full eye exam. When it was obvious that it was best not to continue with the eye exam she then in a very disgruntled manner proceeded to check my right eye and confirmed that we could not continue with the examination. This is after a half hour of trying to convince her that this wasn't the correct approach. She then wrote down some over the counter medication recommendations and told me that I had a scratched cornea. Neither of the medications worked. When it came time to bill me for that visit it turns out that this place had not only attempted to charge me full price without considering my medical insurance, but they also claimed to have given me a full eye exam so I had to wait for them to make the correction on their end in order for me to actually get an eye exam anywhere else. 3 months later they've now sent me a letter saying that I owe them for an eye examination when I never received an eye exam. I have used glasses/contacts since I was 16 yrs old and I have never experienced this type of ignorance from an optometrist office before. It's incredible important to get your vision treated by a professional that cares about their patients. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

I recently went on Medicare due to my turning 65. I'd heard rumors that it was sometimes difficult to find Doctors that would take Medicare even with a supplemental policy. Will attest that this was true from the numerous places I called to make an appointment. Finally bit the bullet and went with the recommendations on the Medicare website. All that to say that TSO on Congress, Dr. Kevin Le and each staff member I interacted with was excellent. My husband went as well, and I don't think he will ever see anyone else as he was very impressed with Dr. Le's expertise and professionalism! Very kind and welcoming environment and they DO NOT force the masks which for me is a deal breaker. So I had a great experience here today. All the personal starting from the check in to the check out. Dr le took care of my exam and he took the time to educate me on where my eye health stands and what it means to me. Also gave great advice on products like what contact may fit my lifestyle. One not is that if you search for the location check around the whole building they are TSO - Texas State Optical but there is also an Asian restaurant called TSO in the same complex. Quick addition, no change to the rating because the people were so pleasant but just an fyi I got a quote for contacts ordered through them that was essentially double what you can order them for online. read more

I'm always in and out in 30-45 minutes. The staff is efficient and good. I never have a problem finding an appointment or rescheduling. I haven't purchased glasses from them, so I can't comment on that. Plenty of parking. Do not use TSO for your eye exam. I asked them beforehand to run my HSA card to see if I could pay using that. The front desk lady assured me that I can and when I went to pay the final bill, my card got declined. I wondered if she ever checked or just cam back without doing any due diligence. read more

Went in for new glasses and contacts and am glad I picked TSO Congress! Dr. Jansen listened to my issues I've had with glasses that other optometrists have shrugged off and thoroughly explained all the options that could help. He was clearly passionate and knowledgeable! Every member of the staff from the front desk to the frame fitting was helpful and professional, and they seemed to have a good system to keep the office clean and coronavirus-free. After the beer labels behind the bar kept getting fuzzier, I decided that it was officially time to get my eyes examined. I had asked a few friends of suggestions for an affordable exam and affordable glasses. (Self Employed = No Vision Insurance!) A few people had said to give TSO on Oltorf & Congress a try. I walked in and as soon as my paperwork was completed I was seen. Dr. Jansen & his staff were friendly and efficient. If you are looking for a trendy eye wear boutique, keep driving. If you are looking for quick and affordable options, this might just be the place for you. There was no pressure to purchase their eye wear but, I am glad that I did! Veronica spent some time with me and helped me find the perfect fit & look. She saw right away that I did not have insurance and took that into consideration as far as my price points. I was in and out with my new prescriptive glasses in less than an hour and a half AND the best part was, I spent less than I had planned! $125 total for my exam & glasses. -On a side note, pay the additional $15 for the computerized eye photo vs. having your eyes dilated. It is so fast and not uncomfortable and beat the heck out of wearing geriatric sunglasses around town for the next several hours. 4 stars for TSO! read more

This is not our usual eye doctor. We visit Dr. Cheryl Jansen, whom we value highly. But her office uses TSO on Oltorf for lab work, which we needed today. She is also married to the Dr. Jansen of this TSO. The office was very disorganized and cluttered feeling and there was dust on everything. There were security cameras and lots of signs discouraging children from doing anything but sitting in a chair in front of the the blaring television. The tech that assisted us was helpful but not overly friendly. She was just doing her job. Fine enough. However, there was another employee, a heavy-set woman with red hair, who just sat behind a desk snapping at children, telling other employees what to do, and at one point even calling another customer "pushy" when he asked her for assistance! Unbelievable. I had no contact with any of the eye doctors but I would not recommend TSO as the service I witnessed today was absolutely sub-par. Dr. Cheryl Jansen runs a much better operation and her staff goes above and beyond to make your visit pleasant and worth-while. They are also very accommodating to children, which means the world to me. read more

I've been going to this TSO for about fourteen years now, and I was disappointed when I saw the negative reviews. I have never had a bad experience with the staff - they have all been professional and efficient. My strongest compliments go to Dr. Jansen. He goes out of the way to make you comfortable and make sure you get what you need. I strongly value his opinion. His counsel regarding eye surgery was critical to my decision-making process. He paid attention to the details - of helping me select a surgeon and scheduling the best time. He makes suggestions which are not based on the best interest of his practice but on the best interest of his patients. And he takes the time to answer whatever questions I might have. I was told over the phone that me and my son can make a walk-in appointment and that the dr. would see us very shortly after that. So me and my son went, I don't have a lot of time during the day to make appointments, so I do rely on walk-ins. We walked in, filled out the paperwork in a not so busy day. We arrived at 2:45pm, we left at 4:45pm, after waiting for over an hour for just a glaucoma test. It appeared to be fully staffed, but what they were doing I have no idea? They seemed to be more concerned with what ever desert they brought to indulge in that day. I saw lots of technicians walking around looking and acting important, but I couldn't quite pinpoint what that job was exactly on this not so busy day. Later we decided to go to a smaller eye dr's office and were seen quite soon. My recommendation is probably not to go to this location, as the staff doesn't seem like they want to be there. read more

Unfortunately bad experience. A few months back the lady taking care of DARS clients was extraordinarily rude the several times I've been in. I was patient and courteous and she continued to be very very ugly. Was supposed to get my glasses repaired, and they sent me back different ones. They were slightly different than the style I'd had and of course I compared them to the pictures of my other and they weren't the same. All the employees working in the front gave me their opinion on which glasses suited my face the best. I can never choose, and I think they must be experts by now, right? I didn't have my eye exam here, just ordered a pair of glasses with a prescription I brought in to them. They found someone to help me in 10 - 15 minutes of my walk-in. I was probably out in about half an hour. My glasses came in the next week, they called, I went in and had them adjusted and I am wearing them now. A-OK. read more

I've recommended him to literally everyone I know because he's so great - frank, honest, and friendly. I was also surprised how many FB friends also go to Dr. J. The staff is great, too, and always gives me helpful tips on how to keep my eyewear in good shape. The woman here are no help and are rude , I had a problem with my glasses and they only made it worse and after I told them and tried to tell them what was wrong they just basically said nothing was wrong and made my glasses worse , when clearly she put my lense in wrong , it was more slanted and my glasses were slanted up instead of centered. (Now I have some ovalish glasses) now when I see , everything is slanted and weird and I'm scared to pop out my lenses because I'm scared I'd break them . One lady sounded angry and was talking as if she was in the hood or something talking ghetto and was giving me weird looks . She said there was nothing she could do when the problem was so simple . Only making it worse, by switching out the lenses, she said bye and I had to go . So basically they didn't help my glasses they just rushed so they can go home for the day. read more

He took extra time to go over eye photographs with me when I had a slight concern about a finding on the images and put my mind at ease. This past Monday (which happened to be Memorial Day), I walked in confused and overwhelmed at the prospect of choosing glasses for the first time in my life. With prescription in hand I browsed the display cases featuring an assortment of frame styles. I was soon greeted by the optometrist and another woman who were both very friendly and willing walk me through every step of the process. They patiently waited as asked numerous questions and I tried on pair after pair. The women were extremely knowledgeable and supportive through the entire process. Finally, I found the right match! Unfortunately the insurance that I have is the Medicaid for my children. The reason I say unfortunately is because unfortunately people judge you when you have that. The doctor here was very very sweet the male and female. Unfortunately most of your visit will be spent with different people there. I wish I could give different reviews for the doctor and the ladies that are sitting where you pick out your glasses. There's two young ladies with brown hair real then. They are very unhelpful you could tell by their face they don't like the job and don't bother asking them a question they'll make it look like you're bothering them and let it be known that they don't want to mess with you and you can wait for someone else just by the look on their face. Now let's talk about the reason I am only giving two stars to this place. There is a bigger woman that sits there next to those two girls she loves to stare at people as they're trying to pick out glasses and make you feel very uncomfortable. It's like you can't even think while looking at glasses or try them on or any of that without her staring at you or telling you which one she thinks you should get. As I was hurrying to pick out glasses for my child because I didn't want this woman's eyeballs on me anymore I overheard her telling her coworker about the way her body looks and I thought these comments were so unprofessional and I was not anxious to check out with her but it looked like the other two girls weren't going to help me so lucky me I get to stay with negative Nancy that's not her name but will just call her that. She sits on the desk that's closest to the glasses you can't miss her she's the one that stares at you the entire time you're in that area and as her two cents in even when you're not asking. I really wish I had a positive experience at this place because I've been here before in the past and I enjoyed myself but this time around I will not be going back because this woman made me feel so uncomfortable. Just a note for future customers only come here if you want to be oogled the entire time you are looking for a pair of glasses. I like to take my time On these things like glasses because they're going to be on your face for the next year, but unfortunately you cannot take your time here because there's someone rushing you and staring at you and telling you what they think you should get. Vangie knows me so well that she has my frames for me pick out before i get there ,and i just make the decision when I arrive, because she knows and cares about her customers. Vangie and Doc Jansen treat my family and I like family. Dr. Jansen is an awesome doc, that has excellent people skills as well. I was traveling to Texas for work and had sudden eye pain. I found Texas State Optical and the staff were able to get me in to see a doctor. The optometrist prescribed an eye steroid and sent me on my way. I learned the next day when I got home and things weren't getting better that I had a serious corneal ulcer and should have been prescribed antibiotics. New to Yelp and this is my first review on here. I was looking for an optometrist and saw how highly rated the TSO on Oltorf was. Yeah, right. A few years ago, I called and made an appointment - I was the first appointment of the day and i showed up a few minutes early. By that I mean a few minutes, not 30. It was cold and raining and when I tried the door it was locked. I looked up - the whole front of the place is plate glass windows - and the doctor and employees where all standing around the receptionist desk talking. I tried the door again and they all turned to stare at me through the window but no one moved towards the door to let me in. By this time, it is only two minutes til open and the doctor points to his watch while looking directly at me. Seriously? you can't let me in? I left. Once at my office, I called and said I was the patient standing outside just a few minutes ago. The woman who answered the phone said, "Well, we are open now. Would you like to reschedule for this afternoon?" ha! Yea, right. My name is Aaron and I run two medical non-profits here in town as well as The Austin Art & Music Partnership. Texas State Optical is hands down the BEST place for vision care. Not only are appointments thorough, but you are in and out of the doctor's office in about 15-20 minutes (even on a busy day like today). Dr. Jansen is such a kind and intelligent man (with so much experience). He makes you feel welcomed and actually educates and informs his patients as to what he is checking for/doing during the exam. I honestly felt none of my typical doctor's office anxiety, and when I left, I felt great because I had been in such good hands. Texas State Optical offers SUCH personable AND professional services.
