shops....bad Customer service on phone..short, rude. not informational...like calling a walmart response..

It's unfortunate to leave a bad review for a Black hair business. I think, having read other criticisms that echo my own, it could be useful to share my observations. Before I start, please allow me to preface this by saying, I believe I met the characteristics of a good client. I notice a pattern of invective being directed at the reviews that are less complementary, the sort of language that centers blame on the client alone. I anticipate more of the same as a result so I'd like to reject that outright. I never demonstrated anything but goodwill- by booking appointments and keeping them, arriving on time or early, booking repeat appointments, showing appreciation with a gratuity at very minimum of 25% at the close of each appointment, and just being generally kind. My hair hygiene was never and has never been a question, by virtue of my line of work I take care of my appearance. So please keep that in mind when the business' reply comes. I'm sorry to say that kindness and respect were ultimately not reciprocated. The good: impeccably clean, skillful, and timely. I was primarily a client of Ms. Akers, and she was clearly experienced. Her product knowledge was impressive. Booking was easy, and I never had an issue obtaining an appointment weeks in advance. She kept her schedule, no lack of professionalism in that department. The bad: deceptive. Though the business states it welcomes natural hair, I would absolutely clarify that natural hair to them does not mean tight/coily textures. I was pressured over and over to commit to a keratin treatment. Each appointment that I declined the straightening treatment, the less friendly and more unwelcoming the interactions became. I remember trying to make conversation once, and asked her opinion about a new hair product release from a brand they carried. This stuff interests me. It's not that I was asking for permission or validation to buy it, I just wanted to hear her thoughts in general. She very curtly responded by saying "you need to just do a keratin". It was spoken with a sigh of exasperation and a very sharp tone. Truthfully, it felt a lot like shaming. I definitely felt that I was viewed as inferior or even ignorant for not choosing that option. It was hurtful, and the context for that will be provided in the "ugly" section. The ugly: open ridicule of other clients. On more than one occasion I heard, as I sat for my own appointment, Ms. Akers and Ms. Mozell say disgusting, cruel, judgmental things about other clients. Clients who, like myself, had declined to do a recommended service, or whose hair was not of a looser texture. It wasn't uncommon for these ladies to call their clients names or insult them behind their backs. They openly discussed having "fired" a client who was, in so many words, too stupid to commit to a keratin service!! The comments I heard at that appointment convinced me not to return and I have not. I couldn't help imagine that if these things were said about other paying customers, why wouldn't they be said about me. It was embarrassing, and I just think there are equally or more talented stylists who are able to practice discretion and exercise restraint before publicly demeaning their own clientele for whatever reason. They make the environment and the experience completely inelegant, so I would personally recommend spending your time and money at another salon. read more

I just moved to the area and was looking for a salon that specializes in natural hair. I fell across this salon and made an appointment with Katrina. She did such a great job educating me on my hair while she was doing it. She helped explain how to take care of my hair and really stressed what healthy hair should look and feel like. I have to write this because the situation isn't sitting well with me. I booked the natural curl define, as that is how I normally wear my hair and needed a trim without unnecessary heat . I received a shampoo, was under the dryer for about 3 min max for the deep conditioning treatment and had product applied to my hair. No trim. When I asked about that, I was told that it's best to do it on smoothed out hair and That was another service offered. Why advertise that as part of the service when it is not actually included ? I would have booked something else. I feel like I was duped and a waste of money. I will say that I appreciated the hair tips I was given but felt the service was dishonest. read more

I booked an appointment for my daughter who was having Senior photos done the same day. I was grateful to get a 3:30pm appointment on a Friday afternoon for a wash, press and some curls. I was told she should be in and out in an hour the stylist told me so I left my daughter there, only to return an hour later and they washed her hair and left her sitting and did other customers hair. I'm not sure why you would overbook yourself to the point your customers have to sit and wait and wait and be happy your doing THEIR hair.... because your booked up until December.... I'm happy for you but our time is equally important.... It took almost 3 hours to do her hair and then I paid with a smile . But if people knew just what they where in for.... time lost waiting in a chair, the unprofessional conversation between the stylists and the ungrateful attitudes.. Without the customers you have NO BUSINESS. Words from the stylist to my daughter I'll consult you when I'm ready to style you. its mind blowing to me this is how you speak to a Paying Customer about their hair!! If you use this shop, hold their feet to the fire, you pay for a service and it shouldn't take Hours and hours for something simple. God bless! My daughter told me it was mentioned to her several times about the product build up but it was washed out after a second washing nothing about needing Dawn dish liquid for her hair. I have visited Mozell twice, and the first time she just gave my afro a shape and that was that. The second time I went to see her, she acted as though I wasn't important. Instead she took almost 8 hours to finish a two strand twist out, and amidst the hairdo she was doing for me, she was doing three other people's hair. I actually sensed some favoritism. Anyway, I got there on time for my appointment and was there from 10:15 until 5:30. I even had to miss work because of it. I don't think I'll ever go to Mozell again. It has been three years since I started going to Mozell to get my hair done and I could not be happier. She is amazing at what she does and definitely the best I have ever been to. My hair could not make it through the dry heat of Arizona without her. When I first moved here my hair was damaged and breaking from root to tip. No offense to my fellow ladies out there but I don't do weaves. Ever. It's just not my thang. I like to keep my hair homegrown and not store bought, mmmmk? I also let go of that creamy crack (aka relaxers) many many moons ago. So when I relocated to metro Phoenix, I searched and searched and SEARCHED for a salon that could handle my natural black hair. I even contemplated taking the 5ish hour drive back to San Diego to go back to my old hairdresser. Then I found Mozell. And how ridiculously happy am I that I did! She is fantastic. She walked though the entire process from end to end about what she was doing, what I could do at home in between salon visits, etc. I mean, honestly, she already won me over after I found out she watched Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder, so being able to do my hair was just icing on the cake. This review is way overdue, but I still wanted to share my experience. I visited Mozell for the first and last time in Aug. 2014. My appt. was around 3:30 or 4pm. I remember her being very friendly. I have bra strap length natural hair and my appt. was for a wash, condition and flat iron. My profile pic is actually the flat iron job Mozell did. Mozell did a very good job on my hair and she was gentle with it when wet...She didn't just rake the comb through it (Natural ladies, you know we sensitive about our hair, especially when wet! Don't go causing any breakage just cause you don't want to detangle my hair first!) She left the conditioner on while I sat under a dryer, which I appreciate and she detangled my super thick hair section by section. There was a huge snag in my appointment...and this is a HUGE snag....When I got there she had informed me that her shampoo girl had called in sick. I know that's out of her control, but I feel she should've made some modifications to her schedule to ensure she could handle the work load on her own that day. Because she didn't, her schedule got away from her and she was several hours behind...Normally it would take about 1.5 hours to do my type of appointment. I ended up being there till 10pm....6 HOURS it took her to do my hair....She had 2 other appointments already in process when I got there and she had a mens haircut & color scheduled after me that she still decided to take, even though at that point I had probably been there about 4 hours. I was stunned..It was extremely frustrating and I most certainly didn't plan on being there till past my bedtime.....But I was. Mozell apologized during my 6 hour session, and I appreciated her acknowledging the fact that this was messed up...To make up for it, she offered me a discount which I thought was in order since I had clearly been there waaaay too long. Like I said, hair wise, she did a great job, so for that, I would do business with her again. read more

Service : Mozell's been cutting my mop for years and putting up with my bad jokes for aslong. She gets 5 stars just for that alone. But seriously, I can't be happier with the professional service she delivers every time. As a guy, most stylists see me as an opportunity to catch up on their schedule, or more bluntly give me a 10-15 minute haircut, make it look pretty to my lyin' eyes and send me on my way. Its usually the next day when people start confusing me with Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber that I realize I've been had. Mozell's different, she takes her time, has style, and makes me look good. People notice when I get my haircut, and actually compliment me. Location: Usually when I go to Old Town Scottsdale, I expect to pay a premium for any service I receive. However with Mozell, the prices is very reasonable. Even for the prices for hair products are competitive. Parking is easy as on one side you've got the Arizona School of Real Estate, and the other Buca Di Beppo. Scheduling: I usually make appointments, but she has squeezed me in in a pinch in short notice--thanks Mozell. Bottom Line; If you have easy hair (like mine) or difficult hair (as it seems most of her clients I see her working with have), give her a call. I truly enjoyed my first visit to Texture Factory. Finding a highly rated salon in the Mesa area specializing in textured hair is not easy. Their website was well designed, easy to navigate and provided me with pictures and the information I needed to give them a try. Mozell and Katrina were welcoming, the salon was clean and I left with a bouncy new do AND instructions on how to maintain it until my next appointment (which I happily made before leaving). Mozell has been my hairdresser for several years now & I love her like a sister. Unlike a lot of hair stylists, she's very gentle on your hair. I am infamously "tender headed" but with Mozell, it's never been an issue. I almost forget she's even touching my hair when I'm there. Additionally, she uses high quality products, and is a master colorist. Her pricing is reasonable & fair as well which cannot be overlooked here in the land of "exorbitantly high priced Black hairstylists". I also have to remark that she is extremely personable, charming, and fun to talk to- which definitely helps pass the time. All these things combined make Mozell a local treasure! Location: Old Town Scottsdale, very easy to find. Parking was a breeze. Scheduling: Mozell is very accessible! You'll want to plan ahead for the weekends, but seems like she will work you in if possible. I was very impressed that she was so accommodating when another new client showed up in need of some major hair TLC. She truly cares and it shows! Service: Impeccable. Today was my first hair appointment and I will say that I received the best treatment of a lifetime. Nikia was my hair stylist and she is so kind and so sweet and so funny, we laughed and had a great time, I'm a very shy person and she made me very comfortable. I came to Mozell & Co Hair for the first time a couple days ago and was absolutely stunned at the amazing ness of the service. Nikia did a tex-lax for me and trimmed & styled my hair and I walked out of that salon feeling like a princess! My hair was damaged from the bottom and she so precisely trimmed it and it turned out literally flawless! I have lived in Arizona for five years and have not found anybody that hooked it up as great as she did here! Highly recommended especially for all my ethnic girls! Katrina is amazing!! I booked an appointment here because I was visiting Arizona for the weekend. I was a bit nervous going somewhere new and so far from me but I'm so glad I did.. the things Katrina informed me about when it came to my hair and just healthy hair in general and what I can do is something I never had a stylist do. Nakia was so sweet and nice during my first appointments, then she changed. Nakia has the basic foundation for doing hair and may become better under Mozell's mentoring. The one thing you can't teach is professionalism, honesty and integrity. This is where Nakia is sorely lacking. She handles her client concerns with a GREAT lack of professionalism, maturity and respect. You would think as a new stylist to Arizona and a professed number of years in this business and her professed beliefs, that her client communication and consideration would reflect much better. Mozell is excellent. I am Caucasian but do a light relaxer and deep conditioning treatment on my hair as well as cuts and blow outs. She knew exactly how to create the right mixture so the processing was appropriate for my particular hair. She is experienced, easy to get in touch with, and flexible. She always makes me feel remembered and knows what kind of cuts I like. Sitting in her chair you feel relaxed and not rushed. I really appreciate that. Having only lived in Scottsdale for 1 year I was in desperate need of finding a stylist that could work with African American hair (especially in Scottsdale). I had called here twice and left messages, going weeks without anyone calling me back. Even drove to the salon, walked in and left my info on a piece of paper.... Nothing. I am from Chicago and recently relocated to Phoenix. I have natural hair and needed to find a hair stylist that specialized in natural hair and is just good with hair overall. Yesterday was my first time at Mozell's and I must say that I was very impressed! Not only can she throw down on some hair, she is a fun down to earth person. Also, her assistant Nikki is a sweetheart and did a great job with prepping me for Mozell. I live with my aunt and cousin who when saw my hair as I walked through the door were in amazement. They were asking me all about my experience and I told them I would definitely be back. My cousin said she will definitely be coming with me when I do. I called my sister who will be relocating here next year and told her I found the "One" for our hair. This salon is great for a simple wash and set, color, natural hair care stuff like that but definitely not for weaving or braiding hair. I went in for a simple crochet. Nikki took 6 and half hours to do a simple crochet. That was ridiculous. The hair didn't come out right and as of now I'm taking the hair out and it's been 2 weeks. I love the environment and everything else however I will not be coming back for crochet braids or any other hair style other than wash deep conditioning and set. The amount of time she spent on my hair, I taught I will come out looking like queen B. It was just a simple waste of time and the fact that I paid 120 is unreasonable. There was always many request for her waiting to get in with other stylist available, and I always knew she had much more potential. I'm not really sure why Mozelle needs a review when she's already in high demand, but she's worth a ten minute review: Ooh what can I say about this place... From day one Mozelle was welcoming and didn't give me the same anxiety one would expect from the typical hair salon. Her clientele is also well mannered (not just me ), which makes the rite-of-passage time females spend in salons less tedious. My hair health has improved dramatically since I arrived in Phoenix thanks to Mozelle. I wouldn't manage without her doing my hair and that's the honest-to-God truth. Real "grown-ups" don't have the energy to bring their hair up to par everyday. So life is easier with her easy to maintain styles and tips. While other stylists may not listen to your individualized needs and assume all hair is the same, Mozelle has never given me reason to worry. My first appointment was March 2014 and I'm at the point where I just sit in the chair and let her do her thing. That is a definite plus. Having a consistent hair stylist is a close-knit relationship, so when you have to constantly give input after a long day-- no comment. In sum, this is a relaxed and professional environment where quality service is above and beyond. It's also CLEAN!! My five year-old nephew had his hair washed and was smiling the entire time.
