We are so fortunate in our area to have so many neighborhood Thai restaurants. Thai Basil is good enough to keep me coming back. Why? Two words. Yellow curry. Whatever they put in the curry is quite addictive to me. Pair this with the traditional potatoes and chicken/shrimp or with the Pad Thai (they made it this way for me), and you will love it. The Tom Yum soup is also wonderful in its spicy goodness. I also highly recommend the other curries on the menu. A word of caution. Medium spicy here is hot at most places. I have fond memories of this restaurant when we would come here for lunch, sitting at the round banquette towards the back. It is comforting that some places remain the same, including the menu at this restaurant. On a recent trip for dinner, I ordered the Crab Rangoon to start. I liked the crispiness of the rangoons, but found that the filling was a bit off-balanced for my tastes as it leaned a bit more towards the cream cheese than the crab. The papaya salad, however, was delicious. Cold, julienned strips of papaya and carrots were tossed in a light Asian dressing and topped with chopped peanuts. While you can select tofu with the dish, I had the shrimp. It was refreshing and flavorful on its own and did not require the iceberg lettuce or the strips of red pepper that accompanied the papaya. I loved the Pineapple Curry with the sizable portion of mixed seafood. The waitress warned me about the level of spiciness so I was a bit concerned; the large bowl of curry was perfectly seasoned and flavorful. The mixed seafood included large scallops, shrimp, imitation crab (I think), and cuttlefish. I was impressed by the variety and portion size. The curry included chunks of pineapple and julienned strips of red and green pepper. I cannot emphasize how much I enjoyed this dish. When you order the lunch specials, you also get a cup of chicken and rice soup (or soup of the day). Portions are large. Everything is delicious. There is a small bar area up front. Tried this place due to my fellow colleagues' suggestion. Ordered the Green Curry requesting no fish or seafood/oyster sauce. The atmosphere of the restaurant was good and looked clean. When the food got there I was pleased with the taste and spice level of the dish. I ordered a Pad See Ew to go for the family and that was good as well, although I forgot to tell them to exclude the egg in the dish which we had to work around. I heard there were 3 other Thai Basil locations, the closest to me being Plymouth. I'll have to try that one. Pleased with the taste, the portions were decent, but it's kinda pricey so I'd probably come here for special occasions. But positive experience overall. read more

Unassuming restaurant in a little mall off 6 mile road. Met some colleagues there for a bit upon their recommendation. Well lit, a little older on the inside, with a bar in the back. Wait staff was prompt and friendly. Had the pad woon sen with chicken, mild spice. So good I ate too much :(. We also had crab Rangoon and also tasty- nice spin on an old favorite. Made a pickup order at Livonia for Pineapple Curry with Tofu. When I got back home, and opened up my order it had chicken instead of Tofu. Me being not eating meat, had no other choice to throw that away. The receipt also reads Tofu(which I ordered), but on opening up the box it had meat(chicken) in it. Came here as a second resort as the Thai restaurant across street is closed on sundays now. The food wasn't the best. I usually get drunken noodles at Thai restaurants so that's what I got here as well. But this place the dish had a lemony flavor to it which was weird for drunken noodles. Something was really off about the taste. The fried tofu was bland and dried out as well. The only thing I did enjoy was the crab ragoons. They were great. Also a lot of flies around the table and throughout the restaurant. Very annoying read more

The staff are very sweet and friendly for starters. They have Coke, not that joke Pepsi. And the food is REALLY good. I get the cashew chicken. Everyone always wishes they got that instead of whatever they have. It's the best, seriously! I've had the shrimp tempura, pretty good! I ordered medium the first time and it wasn't very spicy at all then ordered hot and it's almost too hot to eat so I guess it just depends who prepared the food. Growing up in a Polish household meant that I didn't exactly eat a lot of spicy foods in my formative years. As such, my tender tongue is still adapting to the heat I've been recently training it on. By golly, I really want to be someone who eats spicy food! But I can't yet quite get there. I still ask for mild to medium and have been working my way up to hotter. This means that I don't even know what REALLY hot food is supposed to be like because I tend to shy away from it. I've heard time and time again that a lot of ethnic restaurants in the area tone down their heat to appease those with similar palates to mine. Now, I can't be certain but after my experience today I'm gonna have to guess that Thai Basil doesn't do this. So heat seekers, come on down! I popped in today for my first visit here. I was definitely ready for some curry so I ordered the yellow curry with chicken, mild. It. Was. Delicious. But it was also, most decidedly, not mild. At least the way I have previously experienced mild. But that's ok! It was so good I worked through the heat. A creamy sauce flecked with spice, coconut, LOADS of tender chicken, potatoes, and onion. I've definitely had my fair share of curries with only a few pieces of chicken floating around--not this one! This one was packed with poultry. It came with a side of rice, which is the norm. Starch city, bay-be! I ate about half my dish (generous portions too) when my mouth couldn't take it anymore. I drank some more water, ate some more plain rice, and gave it another go because it was so good I didn't want to stop. But sadly I had to concede. Maybe next time I order "no spice" so I can finish because, my God, I wanted to! Service was a-ok. My server wasn't overly attentive but I saw her enough. Price was good--I have more than enough leftovers for another meal which is great for $11. AND I feel like I just worked up my tolerance level another notch. Go me! read more

We tried the Livonia spot for the first time this week. Best Thai food I've had in quite some time. We really enjoyed the chicken Panang curry and shrimp Pad Thai. We had both medium spice and the spice level was good. Both were outstanding. The Thai fried rice with chicken was good. This is a go-to lunch spot for a variety of folks at my office and in this area. They serve a cup of soup with lunch which feeds the beast if you've gotten particularly hungry before your food is ready! This touch is great as the weather gets colder, too! The soup varies from a garlicky chicken and rice, egg drop, wanton, hot & sour, etc. The lunch menu is solid with a good variety of reasonably priced items, and the food is flavorful - not just salty or spicy. I am particularly fond of the dishes that have yellow curry sauce. My favorite is the pineapple curry, which has large chunks of pineapple, but it is not overly sweet. I love the warm flavor of this dish; it is comfort food. The curries are served with rice. I enjoyed the pad thai dish as well. It is flavorful, but doesn't have the rich flavor of the curry. (Ideally, I'd like a pad thai curry, which I believe is on the dinner menu!) My colleagues go for the curries and also the fried rice, which I haven't tried, but I see a lot of folks order it. The ambiance here is casual. It is clean, well-decorated and lit. It's a good place to take a customer or vendor as the tables and booths are fairly roomy. This place can get busy, but service is good, and lunch is generally served quickly. Only one time were we not in and out in under an hour for three or four person sit-down lunch. The staff is friendly, but busy, so they aren't overbearing. You may need to flag someone when down, if it's particularly busy, though. read more

Hidden gem of Livonia! I've driven by this place for years and hardly noticed it, it wasn't until my mom saw they had hot and sour soup that we made the trip. We've been regulars ever since! We come here often for most holidays or frequently get carry out. It's a very spacious restaurant with friendly staff and speedy chefs. Never have we ever had to wait to be seated and the service here is super prompt! Anything from their soups, sushi, pad thai, curry dishes, noodle platters and seafood masterpieces, everything on the menu is a delight! Sushi overall is pretty good, we got the spicy combo roll and it was yummy and a nice variety. Wouldn't recommend the That basil roll, has jalapeño in it and with the basil in it it's a little overbearing. Like spicy food? Man oh man watch out! They will ask you level of spices, I highly recommend you seasoned veterans try the medium before skipping to the hot. All those who are fearful of spice and heat, stay at mild and I'd even ask to make sure they are "gentle" with the spice. I've had times where I've gotten the medium and I could've sworn it was hot, but man was it sure good. What I love most about this place is everything is cooked fresh and you can customize things to your liking. I went to Thai Basil with some of my old colleagues. We got seated and got our menus and we ordered. I ordered the Drunken Noodles with chicken. As I waited for my food to arrive, I looked around the place. For some odd reason, the place reminded me of a Chinese restaurant, I'm not sure why... maybe it was the layout or the design... I couldn't figure it out... I got my food and I enjoyed the dish. The Thai restaurant that I typically go to does not have Drunken Noodles, but I had them before at different places. If I had to decide between Thai Basil or Little Bangkok, by default, I would select Little Bangkok. The service was good, although if it gets busy the service slows a bit. They also have sushi you can order; haven't tried them yet. As I always say, reviews are helpful, but you have to try it yourself and judge the place on your own merits :) read more

Pad Se Eww? More like Pad Se YUM! Drunken Noodle - lemme tell ya something ya slapnuts, I have never ever in my lifetime had Drunken Noodle before. It is my official go-to dish here. As I said, the noodles here are slappin! The Drunken Noodle is a delightful plate of noodles, perfectly seasoned and textured with some nice veggie delights like onion, pepper, jalapeno, broccoli, a meat of your choosing, carrot.....but the real Superstar of this dish is the basil. You're eating a spicy bite of shrimp and then BOOM!!! This piece of stir-fried basil enters the fold. It's a game-changer. It's like you are sitting there, having the best, spiciest dish of your existence and then all of a sudden, you catch a bite of the basil. All of a sudden, your mouth becomes your momma's garden come Mid July. It's a proverbial mind-f***, but in a good way, nee - GREAT WAY! That herbal bite makes you want to eat it all, but be careful - the portions are thicc, like I like my ladies, also great on price (insert hooker joke here). Another great item here is the Gang Mussaman Curry. I like it spicy, Spicy #4. It's excelsior. It's a meaty curry with potatoes and peanuts and a delightful taste profile. If you didn't know, Mussaman is a tribute to Islam, a great religion with Five Pillar's of beliefs, each Pillar Better than the last. You will love this dish. SOUP - The Tom Yum is Solid. If you love heat, get it at Level 3 or 4 of heat. It is refreshing and punishing, taste plus heat. I like Shrimp and Chicken on the soup. I wouldn't recommend beef for the meat on the soup. Chx and Shrimps all day! They also have Tom Kha Soup - Literally Tom Yum with a splash of Coconut Milk, just go balls deep on the regular Tom Yum, it is so damn good and fiery if you get three or higher. Atmosphere - Great place for families, friends and single eaters alike. Quiet setting, perfect. Also clean. Once 2020 becomes back to good, this is the first place I'm hitting up. In the meantime, takeout-wise, I will always be hitting it up. The food is good man! Prices - Fair Drinks - Beer is the only TRUE cure for a spicy tongue, they got beers here. Service - flawless In closing - come here and come here a lot. You will love it, and at the end, you get a lovely guava candy with the bill. That candy cures the burn, plus it is so tasty. I am a cig smoker, Cigs make the skin younger and makes me run faster, but that candy is so yummy, I dont even want to smoke after I eat (and if you know smokers, all we want after a meal is to get Ciggy With It). Best Advice - Don't order Superhot if you can't take the heat. Doesn't look like much when you drive past - you may even miss it. This little hole in the wall is off of 5 mile and 275. I have tried the Thai Basil in Plymouth and it couldn't compare; I'm not sure if the Livonia location is the original, but it's my favorite. The crab rangoon is incredible - very light and fluffy in a very thin paper wrapper. I always get a red curry because you can't beat it - delicious vegetables soaked in a generous sauce! First, the environment is welcoming. It was clean, the staff greeted us right away, nice decor. The seating was comfortable and accommodating for various sizes. Our waitress was very attentive. The food was good. Not too flavorful but just the right amount for me. I got the chicken pad Thai and the chicken satay. We got our food in a timely manner. My only somewhat negative comment (not even really a big deal) is that I ordered the shrimp rolls and never got them. Thai Basil is the best Thai food restaurant that I have experienced anywhere. The tofu and vegetables in the panang curry were fresh and the sauce was made with coconut cream. It was full of flavor and the perfect spiciness when we requested medium. The tofu drunken noodles that included red bell pepper and broccoli had a flavorful spicy sauce with a little bit of a tang. As a vegetarian I appreciate that they can make drunken noodles without oyster sauce. Lunch specials were served with a hot and sour type of soup and lunch special portions were big and prices good $8.25, served M-F 11am-3pm. The only downside was the server's forgetfulness of soup, soda and cashews for the drunken noodles. I'm hoping this was just a bad day and not the norm.
