From the outside the place is inviting with even a sign by the entrance. The decor was very eclectic. I was immediately greeted and seated. While waiting for my friend I was served water. It was lunch hour (until 3pm) so all dishes offered on the lunch menu is $12.99. I ordered the Massamun curry. First, the portion size served wasn't as pictured in the menu. The curry visually had disproportionate protein/veggies ratio to curry broth where it seemed like they served the last serving of the pot with only a few veggies, 3 cubes of potatoes. The peanuts should have been slightly blanched as they were too hard/raw. The beef slices were dry and tough. The rice was very dry, not fluffy and tasted like it was a day old. Must have been an off day but considering the drive from VA Beach plus my friend and I were eyeing and wanting to try this place for some time now, it was subpar to our expectations and what other reviews reflected.

Sam served us and was absolutely so welcoming and kind! I can't believe it was the first time I had ever gone in here. I feel like I have been missing out. The food was delicious. The portions were big. I loved the home-y feel inside. I loved the recommendations that Sam gave us to try and the spices he brought out. He explained everything and with context of his childhood home back in Thailand. It felt very warm, very VIP, and the food really was delicious.

1st time ordering here, but I didn't eat inside; Maybe next time. I got the duck curry, which to me was bomb. I really like the Thai tea too. I would recommend level 1 spice to start out though if you never tried it.

I can see why parents are regulars here! My family stopped in here earlier today to celebrate my mother's birthday, and it was a great choice. The noodle dishes are exceptional. In addition, our server was focused and friendly, making sure to provide us with water refills frequently (which was especially appreciated given my slight overconfidence in terms of spiciness level). Finally after telling her it was my mother's birthday, she came out with a fried banana dessert! Here are some of the flavors I got a good taste of: Pad See Ew (Chicken) - 4.5/5 - Delectable. I loved the addition of carrots to this dish, and the thin cut made the flavor a perfect garnish. The spiciness was not very evenly distributed throughout this dish though, making each bite a bit unpredictable. Fried Bananas with Honey - 5/5 - A chilled banana interior enclosed in a warm, flaky dough. Maybe the best thing I've ever tasted. I will be ordering this every time we come in the future. Excited for our next trip to Portsmouth!

So it's date night and we choose. Thai Basil. Not very busy but it's early on a Friday night. The service is really nice and friendly. We ordered an appetizer of pot stickers. Very tasty. Good job. Needed a little help so we added some spice. I ordered a medium heat pad Thai with chicken. Ok medium is pretty good intensity. I love spicy and this is just about close to all I want. Delicious flavor and a lot of food. My wife ordered pineapple fried rice with no spice. Delicious flavor. We mixed them together and it calmed the spice down and was incredible. This place is great. We will be back. We saw a lot on the menu to try for next time. We ordered Thai iced teas. Oh yeah.

Was craving Thai food in the Portsmouth area and came here on a weekday evening. The online menu is descriptive with plenty of images which helped in choosing what to try. The staff is nice and made me laugh, felt like being served by aunties. Ordered: veggie eggrolls: crunchy, perfectly fried, veggies could use some more seasoning, dipping sauce was sweet and tangy pad gra pao: was thinly sliced and not ground as advertised, the flavor tasted more like garlic with brown gravy panang curry: big portion of curry, soup was a little thin but had good portion of chicken and veg, hot and spicy as advertised lard nah: the wide rice noodles were old, as evidenced by the dry texture and broken appearance of the noodles and were not as flavorful as they could be. Overall this place was okay. It serves up traditional American Thai foods as well as fun seasonal dishes.

Delicious food, good service and a variety of options. I come here everytime I visit my cousin and his family who lives down the street from here and who regularly come here on the weekly basis. I look forward to coming again.

We decided to pick up some food for dinner and were craving Thai. Thai basil showed up on our Yelp search so we wanted to give it a try. We grabbed food to go so I can only comment on the food itself. We got chicken basil fried rice and chicken pad thai. Our order took quite some time to be prepped despite the restaurant being nearly empty. It sounded like there was some confusion with the online orders so that might've just been a one time thing. I thought the food itself was decent, but nothing extravagant. I've had basil fried rice plenty of times before but the one I ordered here didn't taste a lot like basil. It tasted more like Thai fried rice. The pad Thai noodles were also cut extremely short which I've never seen done before. The portion sizes were great though- one serving was enough for 2 meals!

Placed an online order on 11/28/23 and ate about half so I decided to take the rest with me to work for lunch the following day. I was almost done eating when I looked down from my computer to see this roach in my food. I immediately spit out whatever I had in my mouth. This is absolutely disgusting. This was my first time trying Thai Basil and I will definitely not be back.

Lovely restaurant on High Street. Very friendly and efficient service and a warm welcome from owner, Mel, who has decades of experience in the hospitality industry around the world. She is attentive to every detail. Excellent menu selections made from freshest ingredients. The lunch specials are impossible to beat: complementary hot and sour soup and generous portions for a very reasonable price. Summer roll appetizer was beautiful and delicious, too.

I stopped in on a particularly warm day and watched her offer cold water to the postal worker and other customers waiting for to go orders. I love seeing people go out of of their way to offer a little kindness to others. Now on to the food. I started with the moo ping which are traditional Thai pork skewers served with sticky rice and a sweet chili sauce. The flavor on the pork was amazing and the meat was so tender. The sweet chili sauce is not like any I've ever had before. I mean it really packs a punch in the best way possible. For my entree I had the Rama chicken, which is essentially chicken in peanut sauce. It's one of my favorite Thai dishes and one that I can never find in other Thai restaurants in the Hampton Roads area. Man, I could drink that peanut sauce. It was sweet, creamy, and had the perfect touch of spice. I had a wonderful experience here and can't wait to return! Also, whoever is in charge of the playlist knows their 90s R&B! Easiest 5 stars ever!

Gorgeous atmosphere and great food!…read more When I first came in, it was a little confusing because no one greeted me, so I wasn't sure if I was supposed to seat myself or wait to be seated. I was told to wait about 10 minutes even though there were plenty of open tables, which was a little odd. That said, the inside is gorgeous. Dark, moody lighting, very quiet, and they also have a nice bar area. I came with friends to celebrate our birthdays, and overall we had a really good experience. I ordered the laab, and it was delicious and even approved by my half-Thai friend! My friends ordered the pad kee mao. They weren't impressed with the thickness of the noodles, but they really liked how balanced the spice and flavors were. I'm pretty moderate when it comes to spice, so I ordered a level 3 and thought it was perfect. My friends got levels 4 and 5 and said they probably could have gone even higher. The service ended up being great. Our drinks were never empty, and our server was super nice and attentive. Overall, I was very happy with the experience and would definitely come back!

We've dined here many times over the years, and one thing keeps bringing us back--the food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and expertly prepared. We started the evening with an order of Chicken Satay served with a creamy peanut dipping sauce. The chicken arrived perfectly grilled, tender, and piping hot. The peanut sauce had just enough spice to complement the savory flavors without overpowering them. It was an excellent way to begin the meal. For our entrée, we decided to split an order of Chicken Pad Thai. Bangkok Garden offers several spice levels to accommodate every palate, but we kept it simple tonight and chose Level 3. It turned out to be the perfect choice--mild enough to appreciate the balance of flavors, yet with just enough heat to keep things interesting. The rice noodles were cooked perfectly, the chicken was tender, and the combination of eggs, bean sprouts, green onions, garlic, and cabbage created a dish that was both satisfying and full of authentic Thai flavor. A squeeze of fresh lime and a sprinkle of crushed peanuts brought everything together beautifully. If you're a fan of authentic Thai cuisine--or if you've been looking for a great place to experience it for the first time--Bangkok Garden is well worth a visit. Consistently excellent food, generous portions, and friendly service have kept us coming back, and I suspect they'll do the same for you. By supporting restaurants like Bangkok Garden, you're also supporting the local businesses that help make Hampton Roads such a great place to dine. Overall: Highly recommended.
