I've tried giving this place a chance a few times, by varying the dishes I order even. Unfortunately, they are too Americanized for my palate. I prefer driving over to Thai Gaeng Waan when I'm too lazy to cook Thai food, but still want some authenticity. You'll find that most Thai people are over at that restaurant as well and not so much at this one, for this area. However, there is ONE dish that they do cook well here and that's the only thing I'll come here for: their MOO PING/bbq pork skewers and sticky rice. That dish itself brings me back to the street vendors in Thailand. So if I want a little snack, I'll head over there for moo ping, sticky rice, and Thai iced tea or coffee. We came here for a later dinner, and we tried the following: Crispy Spring Rolls (stuffed with cabbage, carrots, cellophane noodles, and chicken - these were freshly-fried and were delicious; I just wished there was a better sweet and sour sauce that's served with it!); Mooping (grilled marinated pork skewers - these were absolutely delicious! Thai Cafe is right next door to Springfield Town center so it's convenient if you're at the mall and looking for Thai food. The service here was wonderful as the staff was friendly, prompt and the food came out pretty quickly. My go to is usually the Pad See Ew and that remained the same as that's what I got. The Pad See Ew was flavorful, had good flavor, the vegetables were perfectly cooked and the noodles weren't to mushy or over cooked as it was cooked just right. The noodles were also a little different as it was on the wider side than the usual Pad See Ew noodles that I am use to. I would give this place 3.5 stars and the only thing that is keeping me from giving this place 4 stars is that the food wasn't as hot enough when it came out and the dish was slightly on the saltier side. There are so many reasons to turn your nose at this restaurant. 1. It sits right next to a wig shop (I don't know why but wig shop mannequin heads scare the living $%#%# out of me) 2. Their dining room furniture looks like it was procured at an IHOP bankruptcy sale 3. It is in the same plaza as Springfield mall (ghetto mania) But DAMN, this place is good. I've been to Thai Cafe a few times, and had decent experiences. Not bad, but nothing to be remembered either. I would have given them a 3-4 star review, however my most current take-out horror makes me doubt my somewhat highly rated experiences. I called for take-out, wanting to "try something new" from my usual go-to thai restaurant (Rice N' Spice). Everything was fine until we picked up our food and brought it home to eat. 1) My favorite Tom Yum Soup was horrific. It was overwhelmed with lime. Is there even LIME typically in Tom Yum Soup? My first word after my first bite was "gross." 2) We ordered duck, a favorite Thai dish of ours, and it was over cooked and dry. It ALMOST could be compared to beef jerky and it was not like the typical, tender, and delicious duck I am used to at other locations. 4) My shrimp pad thai probably had 4 pieces of shrimp in it, and was not memorable. Not good, not horrible, just not something that made me want more. Let me tell you, there is no worse feeling of craving a certain food, finally getting it, and having it disapoint the crap out of you! Sorry Thai Cafe, I hate to say, but this is the end of "us". We got our order to go on Sunday and they have lunch prices on the weekends.. which is great! We ordered wayyyy too much food. All of our food was delicious. We also go the Tom Yum Noodle soup.. basically it was jut a lot of Tom Yum Soup with noodles. The noodles werent that great.. but in the end it was cheaper to order that then order 2 separate orders of Tom Yum Soup.. so it was a good deal. We ordered 3 entrees and 1 appetizer.. total was $29. Hands down this is my favorite Thai restaurant. The food and service is amazing. The great thing about this place is the portions are so big and the price is so low. I would go the extra miles to eat here than any other Thai restaurant. I recommend the Stir-fried Noodles with beef if you are a beef person. Also try the panang curry, it is DELISH. I would also recommend the Kyoza as an appetizer. This is 100% authentic Thai cuisine and you can't go wrong with any of the dishes. This hole in the wall spot located in a small strip of shops in Springfield was surprisingly awesome. Not much on looks but the food more than makes up for it. Staff was friendly and overly accommodating, they made sure all of my needs were met quickly. I went with the pineapple chicken and it was great. Nice sweet flavor of the pineapple with a decent kick of tang. The vegetables were cooked well, nice crunch but not undone. Another great example of not judging a place but just the looks. Although the food is good and the delivery is generally fast, I can't rate this place higher than 2 because of their unsanitary practice. The first time I ate here, I ordered chicken pad thai and got horrible food poisoning. My husband had a beef dish and he was ok, so I know the food poisoning had to be from their chicken (my husband and I ate the same food the day before too). Despite this horrible experience, we still ordered from them because we like their food a lot, but I think I'm finally going to stop. There was a cvs bandaid trash in my food. don't own this type of bandaid and I haven't used any bandaid in months, so this indicates that whoever cooked the food probably got a cut and possibly may have dripped blood in my food too (and not to mention he/she threw away the bandaid packaging in my food). I just had an excellent and inexpensive dinner at Thai Cafe. This is a great find in an unassuming strip mall. The interior was simply decorated and very clean. You enter through the back, pass the kitchen area where the delicious smell of stir fried garlic and basil fill your nostrils. Two huge glasses of Thai ice tea, spring rolls, bean thread salad, beef panang, and a bowl of tom yum gai came out to be a little short of $32 before tip. With the exception of the terrible spring rolls that had too much cabbage and reminded me of Americanized egg roll, everything else was delicious and worthy of ordering again. The bean thread salad and tom yum gai were rated 1 pepper while the beef panang was rated 2 peppers on the menu. One pepper was enough spice for me and the two peppers compelled me to take swigs of ice water in between bites. That's saying something since I am the one who thought the hotpot at Uncle Liu's wasn't really that spicy. I am happy to report that they didn't make any of the dish overly sweet and dumb down on the spice level to suit American taste. For those who are truly brave, there is one item on the menu that's rated 3 peppers. They also brought out 3 spice jars filled with dried chili flakes, pickled jalapeno, and spicy fish sauce (very salty and not sweet like nuoc mam). I eat at another restaurant in this little strip mall next to Springfield Mall all the time and never poked my head in here until a goodbye lunch for work this past week despite the fact its been in my Yelp bookmarks for ages. Happily I'll be coming back more often now. Exceptional food and service to be had here. We easily had 30 people in our party - and because of the nature of work everyone didn't arrive at the same time. Still the staff was so gracious about dealing with us and everyone's food came out just minutes after the orders were placed. And the staff was still serving patrons in the rest of the restaurant. My panang chicken curry came with a vegetable spring roll and small salad. Add in the bowl of jasmine rice and it was easily enough for me to have for lunch and then again for dinner later. Just "okay".. I really wanted to like this place since my friend said it was super authentic and the food was great, but I've had better :(. My friend and I love Thai food and love exploring local Thai restaurants so we always try and have a full experience. We came in on a Saturday night, around 715pm, and the place only had about three tables. At around 8 the place was full. We started off with calamari and Tom yum soup... Calamari was just meh... and the Tom yum soup was a little on the sweeter side and the seafood in it was tough and over cooked. My friend couldn't even eat her soup. She got the beef kaprow and I got the beef drunken noodle for our entrees. Once again the flavor profile was just not there. The beef kaprow seemed dry and that is not what I'm used to. The drunken noodle seemed like it had sat in a pot that had burnt on the bottom and that burnt smell had stuck to it. Shoot some of the noodles even seemed over cooked. At the end we had all our plates sitting out with a bunch of left over food. Yet, we still went for the dessert and shared the coconut custard which was warm moist and delicious. The only part of the meal which we both enjoyed and ate fully. The pros: the menu had nice pictures so you can see what you are ordering, the wait staff was friendly and attentive to refilling drinks and bringing us napkins etc, the coconut custard dessert was good we had no complaints, and the food came out fast ( not sure if this due to precooking and this is why the flavors weren't there- so might be mixed with a bad here).. Passed by this cafe hundreds of times for the last several years without ever thinking about ever trying it, because it's located in a non-descript strip mall area. It's close to the recently renovated and re-named Springfield Town Center. Recently, family dragged me to this place for a Sunday dinner, and I wasn't expecting anything beyond 'meh' with the food and decor....I've been to enough strip mall "Asian" food places in this country that I could be disappointed for at least three people....The restaurant has two entrances, and I think we entered through the back door or 'delivery area' and you wouldn't think anything extraordinary with the minimal color scheme or ornamentation. I was charmingly surprised by the experience. Other than a table with six people, there wasn't anyone else here at the restaurant. Later, a party of 15 to 20 people arrived. (It's good to know that they can handle large parties.) The cafe staff were very attentive even when the larger party present. Once we sat down at a corner table, we noticed two menus, the regular and the special. Dad looked at the 'specials' menu, and he decided on the talay sampler, which was filled with various seafood items. He had the non-spicy version. Although after I tried a bit of it, it had a hint of/some spice to it. A couple staff members were concerned about the spiciness, they checked on us after serving our food if it had too much of it. He was okay with it. As for the spice factor for this place, it does indeed have that without it being overbearing....And I do like it spicy....BTW, though having much spice for the sake of spiciness isn't a good thing...It's gotta make sense (flavor-wise) for my taste buds. We started out with a few appetizers: crispy veggie rolls, chicken satay, crispy tofu. They were standard for taste & presentation. No real issues, though the satay could have been a tad bit more moist. Fortunately, the fresh peanut sauce accompanying the starter made up for it. As said earlier, we got the non-spicy version of the talay sampler. As well, we ordered the roast duck curry and the crispy duck kapow. Was very surprised how the food preparations were very fresh, especially the vegetables and spices. The sampler was a bit too "fruity" for my taste. Maybe, because it was .made non-spicy, it tasted odd for me. I would like to try the spicy version next time. This place may be considered a hidden gem, but I have to try the other dishes before I say that. I'm going to give it 3.5 stars out of 5 for my first visit. May bump it up higher...But I'll be back at least for that crispy duck kapow. It's extraordinary. It was considered a hit by my party. Super delicious and flavorful Thai food! The drunken noodles are legitimately spicy, packed with the heat you would expect from authentic Thai cuisine. If you want something a bit sweeter, their pad Thai is very tasty and comes with ample meat and toppings. Also, their gyoza and vegetable spring rolls always come out piping hot and fresh. No matter what dish I try, I always leave full and satisfied. This is such a cute, local, family-owned business. The ambiance is very relaxing and comforting and the staff are amazing. Anyways, let's get to the price range and the $$ award that is higher than many other Thai places in the area that have just $. That extra $ is a mirage. This place is priced just as much as many Thai places. More specifically Rice & Spice near Ft Belvoir. What you notice at Thai Cafe is that the proportions are to satisfy the typical American - huge dishes, mounds of food, and makes your stomach stretch if you succeed. I went with coworkers and one of them got the fried rice entree. That is nearly 2x as much food as you get at Rice & Spice. I got the lunch special Ka Pow and everything was excellent. The owner knew him so we got a warm reception but I suspect the causal dinner would get the same. Great food and value. My coworkers and I have ordered from here consistently and enjoy it better than the thai restaurant on the block. I've ordered the kaprow and green curry and it's always flavorful. You can taste the herbs and spices in each bite while the heat is never overpowering. The vegetables are fresh and taste great as well and the amount matches the meat (meaning it's not like 2-3 peppers and one eggplant). The portion sizes match other places while still at a lower price. They also include a free little salad (love the dressing) that you don't get at other places as well. Thai Cafe was a genuine pleasure. Thai Cafe is a cute little Thai place in a strip mall in Springfield. It isn't really fancy or super conveniently located, to be honest - it's pretty basic. The service was a bit slow for my taste as well. Thankfully, prices are extremely reasonable. I had the Gang Par curry, which was outstanding. It's a three-chili level of spice, making it EXTREMELY hot - proceed with caution, my stomach was wrecked for the rest of the day. That said, it was exactly what I wanted in every respect, and a genuine culinary delight. I wish the service was better - I desperately needed a lot of water - but the process was itself enjoyable. It looks a little sketchy from the outside but it is very clean and nice on the inside. It was definitely not what I was expecting. The staff is polite and the food is delicious. Thai Cafe is located near the newly renovated Springfield Mall. The restaurant is clean, medium sized, and has authentic dishes. I have been here for both lunch and dinner and would recommend to anyone craving Thai cuisine in the Springfield area. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced between $8 - $13, in which almost all the items come with a crispy spring roll AND house salad. My only complaint would be that the mango sticky rice. The rice was drenched in their sauce, which made it become too soggy, and the mangoes were not ripe enough. Perhaps it's still not in season, but at least recommend us something else. read more
