We love Thai food, and since Rockville isn't too far from us, it's where we usually go when the craving hits. When near Springfield, Thai Ghang Waan has become one of our regular stops, and after a few visits, I've started to notice a pattern--their salads and smaller plates have consistently impressed me more than the mains. Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong entrées, but that's been my experience so far. One thing they definitely don't mess around with is spice. I ordered medium, and it had me sweating by the end of the meal. Our favorites are the crispy rice salad and the fried watercress salad--both are packed with flavor and worth ordering every time. On previous visits, we also really enjoyed the oyster pancake and the Goong Chae Nam Pla (raw shrimp). Service has always been excellent too. Our water glasses were refilled without us ever having to ask, which is always appreciated. We'll definitely keep coming back, but next time I think we'll stick to what they do best and load up on the appetizers and salads. read more

Very wonderful hidden gem Thai restaurant in Springfield. Quiet and clean interior with comfortable seating options - booths and tables. Very friendly staff who checked in with us before the rest of our group arrived, making sure we were comfortable. The food was delicious - at the table we shared dumplings, red curry, crunchy pork belly, and pad thai. The servings were just enough for a hungry belly with no appetizers, with the exception of the pad thai - lots of volume there! Red curry medium spice wasn't too spicy at all, it was perfect. Stopped here for dinner with my family and it was delicious! We got here around 630pm during a weeknight and it was already packed inside. Located near the Brookfield plaza tucked near Bonchon. We ordered the chicken larb, watercress salad with seafood, pad see ew with beef and duck red curry. Everything was delicious! I loved the flavors of the larb and the watercress salad, citrusy, herby and spicy. Our entrees took a little but I didn't mind me everything was made to order. The dishes were piping hot and overall had great balance of savory and heat. The pad see ew had a great wok flavor. The red curry was tasty, a little spicy from the red curry subtle coconut taste. The watercress salad was my favorite along with the pad see ew. I also want to talk about the vibes inside this restaurant. We ordered a few beers and a Thai iced tea (of course) and the bottled beers were served with chilled ice mugs. My group of 5 decided to order a few things and share family style. We ordered the chicken larb, som tum, pork lad na, pork pad see ew, and koh moo yang. All were incredibly tasty and large portions which was a perfect amount to share. Since it is relatively far and hard to get to without GPS guiding. We decided to get a selection to try. We got the Yum Woonsen, Koh Moo Yang (Grill pork strips), Pla Num Pla, Floating Market Noodle (Boat noodle soup) with pork, and Ba Mee Haeng (Dry egg noodles, very well seasoned noodles). The portions are generous and properly seasoned. Only minor miss for me was there is a bit too much raw onion in the Yum Woonsen. If you are looking for a friendly neighborhood Thai restaurant at an affordable price, well worth a drive to Springfield. Would definitely go back to try out some of their other dishes. read more

This was our first visit to Thai Ghang Waan in Brookfield Plaza (love the retro 60s Brookfield sign at the entrance). Lots to like at Thai Ghang Waan. The restaurant was thoughtfully designed with a door immediately inside the front door, which is great for keeping cold drafts from entering the establishment. Thai Ghang Waan is immaculately clean so we felt kinda bad when we inadvertently tracked in salty brine from the sidewalk outside. They'll have to deal with this for a while because it appears the 10" of snow that fell Monday ain't goin' anyplace soon. Service was excellent. We liked how our friendly, kind and attentive server immediately brought out small plates, chopsticks, spoons and plenty of napkins along with the menus. During our meal, whenever the water level dropped in my glass, our server was right there to provide a refill. I really love that! We started out with an order of the steamed dumplings. The steamed dumplings were oh so delicious, made even better with the accompanying sweet soy sauce. BTW, ever since I had sweet soy sauce for the first time in Doi Moi in DC, I jump for dishes that come with it. Thai Ghang Waan's dumplings might, from appearance, remind you of shumai. For my entrée, I ordered the Phad Thai with pork. It was pretty good with plenty of pork and lots of crumbled peanut. The flavor was not bad at all, but I would have preferred a stronger hint of tamarind sauce. JP ordered the Phad Thai Ra Yong. I think of as Phad Thai Plus, because it was essentially the same as my Phad Thai, except it had (some) crab meat and two giant shrimp. I thought they were crawfish, but they were just unshelled big shrimp with legs and everything. While we absolutely will come back, we do wish they had timed the arrival of our entrees at the table a little better. JP's dish came out nearly 10 minutes after mine. The place is always packed, but the wait isn't too long since the food comes out relatively quick but always hot and to order. The interior is warm and inviting just like their customer service. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. The noise level is average, so you don't have to worry about yelling over any speaker system or whispering so that you aren't breaking any still silence. My go-to dish is the garlic lover with chicken. The chicken is tender, the vegetables are fresh, and the garlic flavor isn't overly powerful since I for one would never call myself a garlic lover. The dinner portion is about 50% larger than the lunch portion, but both are at a great price for the quality food you get. Overall, highly recommend trying Thai Ghang Waan out whether you're looking for comfort authentic or Western Thai food. read more

Here's what we ended up getting Papaya salad: excellent Calamari: good a little bit on the sweet side I ended up getting a dish that I can't even tell you the name of. It's a thick noodle with soup. What I typically get in a Thai restaurant is the green salad. They informed me when I was about to order it that they didn't have bamboo shoots. Well gosh damn it! I love bamboo sheets. It's one of the reasons I order the damn thing. So basically they were out of a clean ingredient in many of their dishes. Whatever this was I didn't quite care for it. It was thick and not really a tasty soup bra. In addition to that, I didn't love the Chinese broccoli or the way they cooked it. The noodles were quite mushy and I just wasn't a big fan of the taste of it Ambiance is nice. The major issue I had here was the service. The servers in general were quite rude and sarcastic with commentary. I didn't really care for their service at all. Parking here is easy. It's a free lot. I stumbled upon this restaurant when they were still closed for renovations and patiently waited for it to reopen because of all the reviews. I placed my order for pickup: red curry with chicken and beef and pad se ew with beef. The meat portion in the curry was huge but not enough curry to support all the protein. The rice portion was also very small. My husband enjoyed his noodles. Both entrees were served room temperature at best - I wish they were warmer. Will deff keep it in our rotation! After some friends suggesting this place for some good Thai food around springfield area, my boyfriend and I decided to grab some food to go for our movie night. We got drunken noodled goong gleur, and duck roll. The drunken noodle was a generous portion and the goong gleur was seasoned very well (just wish we had it fresh and crispy at the restaurant). One thing I would pass on is the duck roll, the wrap was a little thick and took away from the flavor of the duck. I will definitely try the ka prow next time if I want some duck. They were swamped on a Tuesday lunch so we decided to order takeout instead thinking it would be faster. We noticed that tables that sat down after we ordered got their food much faster than we did, so it seemed like they were prioritized even though we waited a good thirty minutes. We also noticed that the portion sizes of the basil fried rice served at the tables were mountainous compared to what we got in our takeout containers. Wow! I was in the area for work and stopped by for a quick lunch. I arrived around 12:30 on a Friday and this little place was packed. The restaurant only has about 10-12 tables and a few bar seats. There was a line for tables but I only had to wait for a few minutes to be seated. It looked like there were only two ladies working the front of the house but they were fast and efficient while also being warm and welcoming. They were happy to accommodate my changes to the dish I ordered, sibstituting my preferred vegetables for those that came standard. The food arrived promptly and it was fantastic! The green curry was rich and favorful with just the right level of spice/heat. The beef was tender and there was a good portion for a lunch entree. The prices were reasonable too. Our first meal here was so amazing that we came back a few days later to try their other dishes. We are from SoCal and truth be told we are blown away to discover so many impressive Thai restaurants in Virginia! This place has beautiful decor (great date place), ample parking and very welcoming customer service. We ordered a variety of dishes: Yen Ta Fo (5*) - Reminds me of my childhood. It was delicious! Yum Watercress Salad (5*) - crispy and so flavorful @ medium spicy. Yum Poo Dong w/Mango (5*) - WOW! So fresh! Yum Pla Duk Foo (3.5*) - a rare find indeed. The texture appeared crispy but it was a bit too fine. It literally disintegrated the moment it touched the mouth. Koh Moo Yang (4*) - pretty good but small portion. Crispy pork w/broccoli (5*) - crunchy and so satisfying! Pork blood soup (5*) - clear pork broth with blood cubes & more. This was also one of faves. I frequent the Brookfield Plaza shopping mall where Thai Ghang Waan is located, since it is a microcosm of the diversity of the NOVA dining scene. Within this seemingly nondescript strip mall you will find the following cuisines: * Japanese * Korean * Pakistani * Peruvian style rotisserie chicken * Pizza * Sandwiches and subs * Gyros * Indian * Wings * Asian hot pot * Indian and Halal grocery stores I usually pop by to grab a boba at the Kung Fu tea, but I FINALLY made my way to Thai Ghang Waan since several Yelp as well as other friends said this place serves up some of the best Thai food around...and they were right! Thai Ghang Waan is one of those family joints I love to support. Walk into the "cozy" (i.e. small) dining room, and there will usually be a flurry of activity with family members busily moving about providing great service to the diners. On their website, they recommend reservations during the evenings, and I would heed their advice. My party of three arrived on a Friday night around 6:30pm, and the place was packed; if you stop by during the lunch hour, it's usually not as bad. We started off with the Som Tum (papaya salad) and it was delicious! Similar to other Thai restaurants, the texture of the young green papaya salad was super fresh and crisp. But what differentiates this version was the "dressing" of Fish Sauce, lime juice, bird's eye chili, and fresh garlic. It had the right amount of umami, acidity, and saltiness to really bring out the flavor of the other ingredients which were the dried shrimp, peanuts, tomatoes and long beans. The other appetizer was the spicy calamari. Mmm...again, super tasty. Fried calamari was perfectly deep fried without being to greasy, and then sauteed in garlic and scallion served with sweet and sour sauce. Heck, we were almost full on just these two starters! My main was that most mainstay of noodle dishes, the Pad See Ew. In Chinese cooking, there is this concept of "wok hei" which literally translates into "Wok fire or heat" and it's where the heat from a high BTU burner in the kitchen imparts that char and deep rich smoky flavor from the wok into the food. The tender slices of pork, the sliced Chinese Broccoli, and most importantly, the wide rice noodles definitely had that "wok fire" infused into each bite; also appreciate that Thai Ghang Waan doesn't feel the need to make their food overly sweet, but had allowed the natural flavors come through. But if you want more spice in your food, just ask for the supplemental spice rack which had the customary chili infused fish sauce, vinegar, etc. We were all too hungry so I forget to take pics of their dishes, but trust me when I say it was sooo good, that no one had doggie bags to take home. Since my initial visit, I've been here on an almost weekly basis going through their menu since everything I've tried has been excellent. Do yourself a favor, either come early for lunch, or make a reservation for dinner to enjoy some terrific Thai cuisine. read more
