We had to pick up our son at Thunder Ridge after night skiing and were looking for a place nearby for dinner before picking him up. We came upon the Thai Elephant and thought why not. We were pleasantly surprised. The service was very friendly and efficient. and the food was very good(not the best but very good). Everything was fresh and well prepared. The ambience is kind of funky; an old colonial building with dark wood paneled walls fireplace etc combined with all sorts of Thai themed icons and decorations. Some of the worst Thai food I've ever had. My expectations for Thai food way up in the burbs was pretty low to begin with but this place did not even come close. I'm actually not sure what type of food they serve because what I just had was not even close to my experiences in Thailand, Thai restaurants in NYC or Thai restaurants in other major cities. The food I got from longtail boats in Thailand while on the beach, where the people cook on small gas burners and have limited access to seasonings (which are expensive for Thai locals to buy) was far superior. But the steamed white rice... Fantastic! PS Don't order the Chicken Param which tasted like fried bread crumbs in a sauce that was basically peanut butter. Service is quick, food is delicious, and the decor is beautiful. Joe the bartender is super friendly and welcoming the moment you walk in. Nice place to sit and have a drink, sit outside (or in) for dinner, or take out. They don't give anything to the table while you wait (such as noodles with dipping sauce) which most Thai restaurants do. Great location, great restaurant, great dining room(s). The first positive experience was meeting Joe, who works behind the bar. A real people person; it was worth visiting just for him. The food? I had Panang curry (which I've had all over the world), and it was good. Joe recommended the summer rolls, also good. All round, worth going. Shoot, I live out of town, and I'm thinking of driving out of my way to come and eat here again. When I first pulled up to Thai Elephant 2, I was not impressed at all. The outside was poorly lit but it was lit up enough for me to see that the outside of the building is in definite need of a facelift. I didn't find it to be inviting at all and if I hadn't traveled almost 45 minutes to this restaurant, I would have turned around and went somewhere else to eat. The inside was only minorly more inviting than the outside. The smell of food was very faint (odd to me for a restaurant, especially on a Saturday night with people in it). The waiter who brought us to our table was very awkward and not outgoing at all with making us feel welcomed. I actually felt like I dropped in at someone's house as a surprise guest for dinner and they were too polite to tell me to leave so instead, ran around trying to make sure there was enough seating and food for me. He brought us to our table. I hung my purse and coat on my chair and sat down and immediately jumped up, as it felt like my chair was going to collapse because it was so wobbly. I stood up and shook the chair a little, thinking it was maybe my imagination for some weird reason, and it was indeed extremely unstable. Having back issues, I was scared to sit in this chair, fearing it might collapse and that I would hurt my back even further, so I grabbed the chair next to me and it was the same way. I asked my fiance how the chair was next to him and that one was in reasonable condition (aside from being stained) so I sat in that one. We ordered the Summer Rolls for an appetizer. I found the wrap to be very gummy and the sauce seemed really cheap, like it was thickened greatly with cornstarch. It was almost like a syrup. It reminded me of the really fake, crappy sauces you would get at a fast food chain. The vegetables on the inside seemed like they were from a prepackaged salad mix and not cut up fresh at all. I ordered the Pad Thai for dinner and my fiance Pad See Ew. We were both shocked at the small portions that arrived for our dinner. We had hoped that the entrees would be good at least but were again disappointed. The noodles in both dishes were very chewy. I had a difficult time breaking up the noodles and felt like I had to concentrate on just chewing my food to break it up so it wouldn't slide down my throat whole and choke me. I ordered my Pad Thai with chicken, which there was hardly any of and the chicken that was in there was like scraps you would use to make chicken salad, very thin and shredded. Good Pad Thai, I've found, typically has chunks of chicken in it. There were hardly any scallions in the dish and the ones that were in there, were all mushed, like they had been sitting in the crisper past their expiration date. The sauce for the dish reminded me of the sauce for the Summer Rolls. I found it to be overly sweet and thick. My fiance's dish was of the same quality, just with different ingredients. Chewy noodles, hardly any meat and the meat that was in there was thin and hardly existent. Also, I found it to be extremely disgusting and nauseating that as we were eating, staff was going around and freely spraying the tables with blue Windex. The smell was overbearing and I could actually taste it while I was eating. The same dirty rag was used to clean all of the tables and because of that, there were grease swirls on the glass of the table, even after it was wiped. There was no consideration for the guests there. There was a cart of dirty dishes and cleaning supplies by the kitchen that was left there, which I found only added to the ambience of Windex in the air, along with dated decor of 70s green walls, carpet from the movie The Shining, the dark wooden walls, and the vases of fake flowers with water lit up in orange and green lava lamp colors. I will never come back to this restaurant. I suspect that it only gets good reviews from locals who feel commitment to here of some sort and from who people who have never had good Thai food. This place is a joke and a crap hole. Don't waste your time or your money. read more

Stopped in on our way back from Patterson. The place was literally empty at 2pm on a Sunday afeternoon. Not a good sign. The service was great but the food horrible. I did confirm most of it is frozen food they buy in packages and reheat to serve. Crispy spong rolls were soggy and had little if any veg inside. The pad Thai was greasy and seemed like it was cooked days in advance and reheated. I asked if the red snapper was fresh and was told no they order frozen. God only know how long it stays frozen before being served. Honestly save yourself the money...you can probably purchase the entire menu from Trader Joe's. read more

This is was the best Thai restaurant that I ever had, everthing was perfect and wonderful. I got Beef satay, Mango salad, Thai cashew nut with shrimp. All of them were delicious, my family and me were enjoying a lot especially they have a special view seating on the back, the scenery was beautiful. It's good to having a lunch or dinner in Thai Elephant, quiet place and the waitress was so helpful and nice. Mango sticky rice was the last things that I got, price was reasonable too. I live quite near to Thai Elephant 2, and sometimes you overlook places simply because they're so nearby. We often cook Thai at home, as well as enjoy it in restaurants. We finally decided to try this rather local restaurant, and were not at all disappointed. Our meals were as good or better than you'd find in any urban Thai restaurant, and their menu includes some offerings you don't routinely see elsewhere. Our server was lovely and efficient. The restaurant is an old place and has been through many incarnations. It's wood-paneled with a stone fireplace and is lodge-like, not at all like your typical Thai restaurant. I ordered crispy basil chicken for $12 and it was one of the tastiest dishes I've ever had. I'm sure I won't be able to resist ordering it again on our next visit. My dining companion had a $20 king fish steak daily special, which had an amazing thai basil cream sauce. The only downside is that we weren't warned of the many fine bones in the fish. We split an order of $12 pad kee mao which was delicious, each had a $2 order of sticky rice, and thai iced tea, made just right. This restaurant is a satellite location, their original being located in Astoria. I would definitely recommend a visit to Thai Elephant 2. read more

Went here yesterday with some friends for lunch. We're Thai food newbies but we really enjoyed it. We're all bubble tea addicts, so we got straight to ordering. I had the green tea, and my friends got pineapple and mango bubble teas. All were pretty good. I even got a 2nd bubble tea to go (I know, I have a problem). We decided to get the $9 lunch special and split an appetizer. They did not disappoint. For an appetizer we got the crispy calamari. Pretty good, but we could instantly tell the breadcrumbs came from 4C (you know, the seasoned breadcrumbs you buy at the store). The sweet chili dipping sauce was good though and the calamari wasn't soggy or rubbery. Now, I don't know if it's the way you set a table for Thai food, but the fact that I had no knife really bothered me. The lunch special comes with soup, salad, and a crispy spring roll. My friend and I got the house soup, which is veggies, tofu, and broth. Still pretty good. Our other friend got the Tom Yum soup and enjoyed it, said it wasn't that spicy. As the entree I got Massaman. The curry sauce was the best part. I was really disappointed by the fact that I got just about an entire onion with maybe 2-3 chunks of potato and the same amount of beef. There's only so much onion one can attempt to eat. One friend got the Thai Cashew Nut with beef. She enjoyed it, but again was disappointed at the lack of meat. The vegetables in hers looked very fresh and vibrant in color. The other friend got the salmon fillet with garlic sauce (he got a knife with his meal) - nearly licked his plate clean. We came to the conclusion that the lack of meat was due to it being a lunch special and only $9. I'd definitely come back to try more. Received 4 out of 5 stars because of the imperfections experienced. Just a side note - They DO deliver. I think it's free delivery with purchase of $25 or more and living within 5 miles then a small fee for living 8 miles out. read more

We stopped in today for lunch with our notoriously picky soon to be 9 year old who has never had Thai food before. All three of us went for the lunch specials, which are an incredible value for the amount of food you get, and the quality is amazing as well. Our picky eater had the Thai Fried Rice with Chicken and the house soup, which was a clear broth with veggies and tofu. While he didn't eat the "stuff" in his soup he really liked the broth, devoured his spring roll and we were both astonished that he actually ate his fried rice and hunted for pieces of chicken. It was a Thai miracle! He even tried some of my Tom Kha Gai soup and his father's Tom Yum soup but he was NOT a fan of the spice level (and, oops, we didn't really tell him they were spicy). I tried the Pad Kee Mao with tofu, it was wonderful. I love that the tofu was super crispy and there was sufficient heat to the dish. Hubby had the Spicy Basil Fried Rice with beef. He said it wasn't as spicy as he thought it would be, but I have a feeling after the Tom Yum his tongue was desensitized to the heat! We had a great lunch today and are so thrilled that we were able to get our picky young man to experience a food we love so much. read more

Great addition to the culinary choices in the patterson/brewster/candlewood lake area. Thai Elephant 2 is the outer suburban outpost of the original Thai Elephant in Queens. We had standard dishes; masaman curry, pad Thai, pad see ew, and everything was very good! Full of flavor and good value. Worth a trip and we'll be adding it to our list of go to restaurants in the area. Only drawback is that it still looks like the Rt 22 steak house! They need to brighten up that decor! read more

Love this! We need more ethnic foods in our area! The soup (both) are amazing!! I could have eaten just that for dinner and my mouth would have been dancing! The red and green curries are also very flavorful and delicious. Two small things...don't let them keep you away! My husband's soup came out before mine and it took a while before mine came... and we had a pot of tea ... it was jasmine. They served it with the tea bags in the pot. Jasmine tea becomes very bitter if you let it brew for too long and ours did become bitter! But...I am still a fan and will go back soon! read more

We enjoyed lunch here on a Wednesday afternoon. We were seated by the window in the back room. Nice view of the grounds and distant mountain. I think it would be a lovely view in winter. There were four other tables seated while we were there. The waitress and bus boy were lovely. She suggested dishes when requested, which were Pad Mee Kao and Panang. Both were spicy and delicious. The Tom Yum soup was very enjoyable with the just the right amount of spice. Spring roll was also good. We would have stayed for tea or dessert, but the waitress brought our check without asking.
