Wife and I craved some Thai food and were returning back from Lake Galena and this seemed like a good restaurant to eat dinner at (thanks fellow yelpers!). We were immediately seated and got the booth in the back. My father in law immediately said that it's like you're in Thailand (he was there last year). Anyhow, the food is decent but nothing spectacular by any means. We wanted to have Thai beer but were told they didn't have any (what a disappointment). So we ordered 2x Jasmin tea and enjoyed it. If you are vegetarian, you have ton of options to chose from so don't hesitate. As for the service, the waitress was attentive and she filled up the tea with hot water twice which was good. There were plenty of staff and it wasn't like each waitress is servicing 10 tables or anything like that so we thought that was nice and we were getting served quickly without any issues whatsoever. There is plenty of parking space available as it's in a strip mall. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area! read more

Thai Hut Good place to go if you want to grab some authentic Thai food for a great price. Laid back atmosphere. Affordable prices. I did not like the crab Rangoon. It was chewy and lacked flavor. I ordered Basil fried rice as my entree and it was delicious. Very fresh ingredients were used and the flavors were amazing. My beloved Thai Hut has gone downhill both in terms of food and service. The owners and long-term staff seem tired. I have been here many dozens of times over the years and haven't wanted to admit this, but the last visit was undeniably poor. I hope they can catch a second wind. read more

Long story short, I'm not coming back. The food was extremely mediocre, as was the service. We had to ask several times for water (on two occasions) and the wait staff was inattentive. The soup of the day was gross, spring rolls were essentially pieces of romaine and tofu wrapped in a tortilla, noodles were over cooked, and the curry was underwhelming. I don't know why but I seem to crave Thai food when I travel. This place was great. Very clean and we'll kept restaurant. Server was friendly and asked about my spice level with each item. They have a 5 star system on the menu that explains each level of heat. I went with 2 stars on mine and it was just enough to feel some heat and still taste the food. The fried tofu is a must for an appetizer. It comes with a sweet peanut dipping sauce that I will be dreaming about tonight. I had a cup of the Thom gha soup. It was delicious but I think a little more lemon grass is needed. I had Pad Thai for entree. It was delicious and they got the spice level just right. We always get great food and great service from Thai Hut. They are so friendly and you can tell they really care about providing a good experience. I LOVE the Thai Hut Chicken. WOW a good restaurant in Rockford. I live in Chicago but go to Rockford once or twice a week and this is about the best Thai food I have ever had. The Rama chicken with white rice is amazing, it's in a peanut sauce and you can get it with noodles or white rice on the side (my preference) The drunken noodles and lovely chicken are outstanding as well. Don't worry about spice they will do it zero thru 5 so if you want no spice you'll get no spice. I have brought many people here for work and everyone is impressed. The only negative is I have missed it sometimes as they close for a break between lunch and dinner. My wife is also hooked so sometimes I bring it back to Chicago and it is still great and warm. read more

I got takeout. Ordering was easy and straightforward. The young man on the phone was very careful that I knew what I was ordering (clarifying that fresh spring rolls aren't fried... important distinction!) and inquiring about the spiciness level of my dish. That was nice. The fresh spring rolls were different than what i usually get back home in DC. These weren't clear cellophane type wrappers, but more of a thin crepe type wrapper. They were warm, with crispy cucumber, seasoned tofu, lettuce and herbs. A nice change from normal rolls. The peanut sauce was good as well- very creamy. I had drunken noodles with vegetables as my main dish. Again, the noodles were a little different than what I normally get (credit card sized individual noodles).These were long and thick. That made the texture odd. The sauce was pleasantly spicy. The vegetables were interesting- a good mix of carrots, broccoli, and some surprises like cauliflower and tomatoes. The dish could have used more basil or something else to make it more flavorful. There were a couple of pieces of tofu thrown on the dish as well. They seemed like an afterthought since they weren't particularly flavorful. Good enough experience overall, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. read more

If you're looking for some Thai food fixin' in Rockford, I'd recommend Thai Hut. The decor inside is a 5/5. They have a lovely set up with a wide range of music, but my favorite part are the tables in the back that allow you to sit on a cushion on the ground. It makes the meals more homey, and quite honestly, I feel more comfortable sitting on the ground chatting and eating than on a table! The food is A-OK. They do quantify the spice levels with numbers at the beginning of the menu, which is awesome, so that you don't get an ambiguous reading when you say you want your food to be "spicy." The aspect that made it ok is that it lacked some flavor. I've ordered the pad thai and the drunken noodles, both which were cooked well and had ample vegetables; however, the flavor was average. There wasn't a kick of flavor, or anything that made the dish unique; sometimes I had to add more sauce to add a little flavor to the dish. That being said, it wasn't terrible! If you're feeling some thai food, this will satisfy all your cravings. :D I'll definitely be back again! read more

Amazing Thai food! I have been here a hand full of times and I've never been disappointed. The atmosphere is amazing, they even have a section that you can sit in without shoes in high booths (seems really traditional, but it's fun). One of the best things about this place is that you can pick how spicy you want your food off a spicy scale of 1-5. They have good food and friendly service. Some of my favorites include: Potstickers Chicken Satay Crab Rangoon Side salad (which comes with AMAZING house dressing) Pad Thai (chicken, beef and tofu are all amazing) Pad-see-iew (I've only tried it with beef and loved if) I can't really eat super spicy food but a spicy level of 3 has always been tasty for me! read more

I've spent a lot of time in Thailand and was not expecting good Thai cuisine in Rockford. Nothing against Rockford, but almost all of the Thai-American restaurants I've been to have been terrible. I'm pleased to say that Thai Hut was a pleasant surprise. My coworkers and I decided to stop in after a meeting and we all enjoyed our meals. I had ordered the drunken noodles with beef, which was very flavorful. Thai Hut offers 5 levels of spiciness and I requested their hottest. The result was a very tasty and enjoyable, yet high level of heat. The dish also contained generous amounts of nicely marinated beef, though it was not tender. The staff was very nice and dining room just as impressive. The ambiance had a tranquil, Buddhist feel to it. One of my coworkers mentioned that she didn't feel like we were in Rockford, but perhaps in Thailand. She's never been to Thailand, but oh well. Anyways, I'd definitely go back, especially for the overall coziness of this restaurant. read more

This is my favorite Thai food place. I've been to a few, but none of them were all that spectacular. This place RULES hard. First of all, their crab rangoons...good god. Best crab rangoon I've ever had, easy...far and away. I'm pretty sure they got an award for their crab rangoon. It's that good. My favorite dish is the Red Curry. On the menu, you can order 1-5 star heat. However, little does the general public know, you can get as many stars as you want. I usually do a 40 star Red Curry, so its hot but its still edible. It differs for everyone, but if you like HOT, 5-star is bxtch-shxt. Go big or go die. Go up to the bar and ask to see the picture of the guy who has the record for the most stars...something like 300-star. Dude's ballsy. They have nice decor, I guess. Lots of wood-carved stuff and a mostly Asian staff (if not all Asian, I haven't been in the kitchen) gives it kind of a legit feel. They even have booths where you have to take off your shoes. So passing through this town, and I was hungry after a good gym session, thus had a craving for some Thai food :D The Thai ice coffee, pretty good, especially the the first 5-6 sips, after that mostly watery coffee, LOL But good! The Green curry with Chicken, not bad, have had better, and this is b/c the spicy-curry gravy was not as rich and thick as I like it to be. The Pad-see-ew, was very good, with the right Thai spices, veggies, and thick flat noodles that are used to make it. I recommend this to anyone that likes Asian noodles! Overall, very nicely decorated restaurant with a lot of wood work and statues all around the this place. They even serve Singha beer, which is a plus for those that love Thai beer! Ever since we moved here from NY we have loved the food at thai Hut. The pad thai is excellent. Also the green curry is awesome. You can get most things vegetarian or with tofu. Extremely happy on both recent tips to Thai hut. My friend and I couldn't get enough of the Tom Kha Gai (Thai soup featuring spicy lemongrass, malanga, meat of choice, all in a sweet and savory coconut milk)! So comforting on a cold day. We both love spicy and ordered the 5 stars, (1st time ordered 9 stars and still excellent) the soup was perfect blend of spice and sweet with all the herbs coming through beautifully. Service was excellent, both on the busy lunch period and the lull at 5pm when the restaurant opens again. Genuine hospitality and the owner took pride in our compliments and suggested more options for the next time we came in. Had the pad Thai for the first trip and red curry on the second. Both with its own distinct flavor and true to tradition. I will absolutely be back the next time I'm visiting grandparents! *you can order more than 5 stars, just make it clear to your waiter/waitress that you love Thai hot foods and don't order more spice than you can handle. I grew up in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood which is the single most ethnically diverse neighbor hood in the city. Walking down the street is an absolute delight. The smells of all the different foods from Persian to Korean and Chinese - and Thai. Arun's and Thai Valley are two of the most highly recommended Thai restaurants in the city and two of my favorites. The reason for this background is to let you know a bit about where I am coming from in this review. I am not a food critic, but not a novice and someone that has a diverse palate from a younger age. Thai cuisine is not a new experience for me. That said, Thai Hut is much different from anything that you typically find in Rockford, It is not a chain. It is not a bar-burger joint and it is not a generic pancake house. It is real, authentic Thai food run by a Thai family that knows how to cook. It is located in a new development and they have a great location in it. They have a large and open seating area with plenty of light and room to move around. The service is fantastic. Like a lot of similar places, you don't really have one server, but any of the servers will check in on you as they walk by. Some may not like this, but they are not intrusive and they certainly do not forget about you. The food is - in a word - marvelous! It very favorably compares to the places in the big cities that I have been to. While it is not upper-priced like Arun's, the food is just as good. I always get the Thai Hut rolls for an appetizer to get things started. They are egg rolls, but not at all like a typical Chinese egg roll. They are long and thin with a fine egg wrapper filled with ground and seasoned pork and shrimp served with a sweet and sour type sauce. They are extremely light and crisp - a great way to start. My favorite meal is their chicken panaeng which is a curry with coconut milk and chucks of green and red bell peppers and basil. Sweet and spicy where you choose the heat. Great mild and "cranked up." Another favorite is the drunken noodle which is a stir fry with noodles. Not the thin, glass like noodles, but thick rice noodles that have a little snap to them. Again a little spicy and a little sweet. The menu is diverse and there is even a kids menu that isn't hot dogs and overpriced mac and cheese. The lunch specials (from 11 - 2) all run $7.95 and come with a perfect portion of one of 14 different meals and a nice bowl of hot and sour soup. Just the right amount for a midday meal. Overall it is one of my favorite places to eat in Rockford. The service is attentive without being intrusive and your food comes out quickly no matter how busy they are. My wife and I stopped here for dinner on a Tuesday evening on the way to Wisconsin from Chicago, both of us VERY hungry (my wife was gnawing on my arm as we entered). We had a taste for Thai, so we thought this would be a good place to try since it had decent ratings. Overall, not bad, but not a place I would recommend. First, I was surprised by the higher prices. $10 for Pad Thai? Maybe in downtown Chicago, but not what I was expecting in Rockford. And the portion sizes do not compensate (unless you are a 5 year old child, you will not be taking any leftovers home). We ordered the Thai Hut Roll for an appetizer--good! My wife ordered Pad See-Iew with beef--decent flavoring, but the beef was chewy. I had never seen it served with cauliflower (in addition to broccoli), but hey, that's Kool & the Gang. I ordered Rad Nar Noodle with chicken--tasty, but again, not enough for this cheapskate for 11 bucks. I also ordered the Thai Iced Tea--it was so sweet the guy at the next table developed diabetes. After a couple sips I told the server who said it's pre-mixed that way. He recommended Thai hot tea instead, which was fine. The server was friendly, and the lady behind the bar came out to our table to drop off our check since our server was very busy. SUMMARY: Good food but unreasonable prices given the smaller portions, and good service. I don't know what the other Thai options are in Rockford, but if I lived there, I would probably explore them. read more
