I have been going to this place for YEARS. The food is so good, if you dine in. EVERY time i get it delivered though, it has 0 flavor...AND it never is the spice level that I submit in the order. So the last time I got my order, and the man just LEFT IT AT MY DOOR, I open the food, tasted it...just to taste literally nothing. Not just my dish, but my husbands also was no good. So what did I do? YES I PULLED A KAREN. I called and told them my concerns, they said a manager would call me back...I waited....no response so I called again and was told same thing...no response. 4 WEEKS later here I am writing a shitty review about what was one of my favorite places... Very nice ambiance, rather more French than other Thai restaurants. However, one of us ordered a special, Pad Crapo Moo, that was on the sign outside. Our threesome, received, slowly, two Pad Thais. Then, about five minutes later, the third guest was told that "We have a new cook. The new cook doesn't know how to cook that." "Ok, could you not have told us sooner?", but the person reordered a cashew and mushroom stir fry. More time passed and was then served what, as the search went on for the cashews and the mushrooms, that apparently what came from the kitchen was a vegetable stir fry. We tried to get the waiter's attention (he has other customers, and eventually established our third member had received the wrong entree. He offered to switch, but given how slowly food had come out, the guest said, "No, I will eat this." especially since the other guests were almost finished. No adjustment was made to the nearly $60 bill. Pad Thais were good. Stir fry was ok, but we were left to wonder why they advertized outside a entree that the cook can't cook and why we didn't get what we ordered. read more

From the steamed hand towel brought to me when I sat down, to the elegant atmosphere of the restaurant; this was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I've had since moving to Dallas. The waitress who took care of me, Rattana, sincerely cared about her job and the people she was serving. She was kind and pleasant and genuinely interested in her patrons. I cannot compliment her enough. I ordered Massaman Curry with Chicken (spicy level of 4 out of 5) and fried spring rolls. Everything was fresh and delicious. The Massaman was outstanding, easily one of the very best I've ever had and the spice level just perfect and what I hoped it would be. I savored every single bite. I will be back! read more

This is the first Thai food place I've eaten at since coming to Dallas, and it is the place I keep coming back to (even though they don't have my favorite dish - beef noodle soup - which says a lot). Their Tom Yum is AMAZING!!! It closely rivals any pho or Thai beef noodle soup I have ever had. Also, their Pad See Ew is the bomb - it has this sweet spicy flavor that they nail right on the head. I have not actually dined in as of yet, but I have had them deliver and ordered pick up and both yielded experiences that were "higher than expected". First of all, when I ordered delivery, they gave me a 45 minute window...imagine my pleasant surprise when they showed up at my door 15 minutes later. The second time they delivered, they literally took my order 30 minutes before closing ... Which is an incredibly convenient cutoff time. When I went in for pickup, I was pretty amazed at how clean the restaurant was. Not a typical hole in the wall, dive feel (even though I am not knocking those places - I am certainly not one to avoid a place because it is a dive). It was a nice surprise though. I loved the lighting and atmosphere here. I look forward to dining in here in the near future. The servers are always incredibly nice and sweet, food is prompt (never more than a 10 minute wait time). Also, don't forget to pick up a cup of Thai Tea - it's pretty amazing and not overly filled with whip cream like others. The real reason I am giving them the 5 Stars though is their awesome ability to cook at ideal spice levels. I am a girl who likes my food Spuuuicey. Level 5 spivey all the way. My friend likes medium salsa at best. My other friend thinks that tomatoes in a can tastes spicy. When we ordered the 5, 2 and 0 spice levels, respectively, each was relieved that it came out perfectly. That is an extremely important part of Thai food for me...so I love that they know what they are doing when it comes to their peppers and seasonings. read more

Another delivery place in Lake Highlands! We were excited to try it out, but it wasn't as great as some of the other reviews make it seem. We ordered chicken satay, lard na with chicken, shrimp summer rolls, and the beef salad. The chicken satay was great, juicy, curry and yogurt marinade, and peanut sauce. Great sized portion and we ate it quick. The lard na with chicken was a little odd, in both taste and delivery. The noodles were in a separate container from the sauce and everything else. I'm not sure the point, but the noodles became a cold blob and were very difficult to re-incorporate into the dish. The summer rolls were a standard lettuce, shrimp, and glass noodles in rice paper. They would've been good, but there were giant mint leaves inside that made them nearly inedible. The beef salad was also disappointing. The menu doesn't mention lettuce, just beef, cucumber, tomato, onion, and cilantro, so I confirmed before ordering it was more salad-like with lettuce. When it arrived, there were more green onions and cilantro leaves than lettuce. The beef was small bits of cold meat, really strange and inedible. Maybe we ordered the wrong stuff, but most of our meals were a miss. Read some other reviews and follow their guidance on what to order, because we certainly got it wrong. read more

Very confused by the 5 star reviews of Thai Opal. We ordered take out a few days ago and both my husband & I agreed it was some of the worst Thai food we've had (here in Dallas or in LA). The staff was very friendly over the phone and were great about noting a peanut allergy. But as far as the food goes: Thai Iced Tea and Iced Coffee - the iced tea was way too sweet, but not the worst. Took a few sips and then had to toss as there was no way to drink an entire cup of it. But the Iced Coffee was something else...my husband took a sip and hated it. So I took a sip & actually physically shuddered. It was not coffee and I don't want to even take a guess as to what it could have been. Fried Vegetable Spring Roll (3 pieces) - tasted just okay. About the same as some frozen egg rolls or the kind you get from fast casual chains. Pad See Ew with Beef - The noodle texture was fine, but the beef and flavor of the dish was off putting. It didn't taste quite like beef and even the pieces of beef in the dish were oddly cut up and pretty dry. Tamarind Shrimp with white rice - The shrimp were battered and friend and then put in a wet sauce with onions and bell peppers. There were about 5 pieces of shrimp and a good amount of the veggies. But the sauce was very syrupy and sweet. Couldn't detect any taste of tamarind and we asked for it to be medium spicy but there was no trace of heat in the dish. We only ate the shrimp and tossed the rest. Larb Gai (Ground Chicken Lettuce Wraps) - A lot of people post photos of this dish on Yelp and it looked yummy. It seemed like the cooked the ground chicken plain and then added some toppings of herbs and onion on top. There's no way to instill flavor that way. Plus, the bottom of the dish had all this water. So strange there was all that moisture at the bottom while the chicken itself felt dry. Curry Fried Rice with Vegetables - This was probably the best dish of the group and even still it wasn't that great. The flavor was nice, but the rice was quite dry. Can't emphasize how disappointed we were with the food at Thai Opal. Won't be back to dine in or take out. read more

I ordered delivery twice from here in the last couple of months. Food was ok. However, the first time the delivery was over 20 minutes late. The second time the delivery was almost an hour late. Called the restaurant when it was an hour late. The manager was not willing to do anything about it. I do not understand the high rating of this place. This was supposed to be a special visit for me. It was my late Grandmother's birthday and her name was Opal. I purposely visited this place because it shares her name. It was definitely a special occasion. It was a Saturday for lunch and the place was pretty slow. Maybe two other patrons. The waitress immediately came over and asked if we were ready to order. She did not ask if we wanted to order something to drink and didn't give us enough time to even open the menus. I asked her if I could start with a coke. 20 minutes later, still no coke and she hadn't come back to take our order. I finally raised my hand to get her attention and then asked for a coke again. She finally brought it over. I said thank you and she didn't respond. We finally ordered Thai fried rice and tom yum soup. The shrimp in the rice were pretty much raw like they had not been cooked. It was disturbing. We mentioned to her and she took it back. They cooked the shrimp and placed them back in the rice. The shrimp were now burnt and the rice was cold. I mentioned that to her. She took 10% off my bill because the manager wasn't there to comp the meal. I will not be going back to this place read more

I've only had delivery so far and it has been delicious both times! We are desperate for more restaurants in the lakewood/white rock area especially those that deliver to the white rock area area (after a long day of work going out is the last thing I want to do!). I ordered delivery the other night and it was here in 30 minutes! I was concerned how quickly it came but the food was fresh and delicious. One call out to people wanting to have it delivered - they don't deliver to apartment buildings. I understand not wanting to spend time searching but I think they should offer 'if you can meet us at the front office we can deliver.' Luckily I live in the town home section of my apartment complex and after I explained that the driver didn't have to search for the building or wander hallways for an apartment, they were happy to deliver. read more

First and foremost the quality of food is really excellent here which surprised me a bit because it's located within a sleepy town shopping center, meaning the majority of stores located within that shopping center were already closed. And this was at 9:00pm on a Friday night. The atmosphere was really quiet and intimate inside. Service was attentive & friendly. I had the Larb gai & Drunken noodles with a spice level of 5. Stopped by for Lunch today. Ordered the Massaman curry with brown rice and chicken. I noticed when the guy at the counter handed me the ticket it said Green curry I thought to myself "oh well I'll try it i've never tried the Green curry". I'm glad that I didn't have him correct the order because it was delicious. Perfectly seasoned and lots of chicken. The rice wasn't overcooked but tender and firm. I ordered #3 on the spicy scale and I think that's the best "for me". I still had a sweaty forehead and running nose from the spiciness, but thankfully no hiccups...lol. We have been going here forever. I wanted to update my review. We love the food here. My kids love the food. The fried rice, the dumplings, the noodles. All of it so good. The curries are flavorful, can get them with no heat or super spicy. My wife loves the garlic chicken. Definitely stop by the only issue is sometimes it's hard to find parking. read more

I am rating Thai Opal 5 stars only because 35 stars is not an option. They deserve it. From the outside you would not expect the exceptional experience you receive but once you walk in the door you will understand. Every detail is considered and the ambiance is wonderful. Beautiful decorations adorn the restaurant and a candle burns on each table. The waitstaff is excellent. My girlfriend and I have eaten there on many occasions and the service is always fantastic and they even offered me great recommendations my first time I visited. This led me to one of my favorite dishes in the entire world is served here the Tom yum soup with chicken. Amazing doesnt describe it. Stop what you are doing and go try it. It is one of a few items in the world I crave and I will visit thai opal just for the soup! An item that suprised me is the chicken wings... I wasnt expecting chicken wings at a thai restaurant but they were outstanding tender on the inside and light and crispy on the outside. The sauce that comes with them is unbelievable. Also, the yellow curry is another of my favorites! If you are looking for outstanding Thai or want to try something new on a date I cannot recommend thai opal enough! read more

Tried this little gem a few weeks ago at lunch. The food was fresh and delicious. The service was fast, attentive and friendly. We both tried the Tom Kha Chicken soup which was wonderful. This was my first time trying this soup but I am now a fan. I ordered the Spicy Basil Fried Rice with Chicken. This is one of my favorite Thai dished and Thai Opal does it very well. I cannot wait to go back and try the Masaman Curry. If it is as good as the two other dishes I have had, I will be very happy. Do yourself a favor and give this little place a try. read more

So I'm pretty sure I'm down to the very last few thai places around my work and home. I saw this was a new business on Yelp and was weary because I also realized that it was one that hadn't been rated very well before (ginger express). I never tried it because I had other options. But, sunday night is thai night and I decided to check this place out. Ordered delivery but the owner (who is SO nice) didn't have a credit card machine set up yet so she could only accept cash. I didn't have any. But I live .4 miles away so said I'd just pick it up. She was very apologetic and said it would only be 5 minutes! I got there and everything was ready. The lady was so sweet. Super friendly and really cared about the meal being good. She even double checked the bag to make sure I had everything. Ordered the chicken pad thai for the boyfriend and he said it was great. Just wished it was spicier (he asked for a 4 of 5). I got the tom kha noodle soup....it was AMAZING. Probably my new go-to tom kha. I could possibly say it's better than Si Lom. They're a little different but both are great. I got it with tofu and LOVED the fact that the tofu was not FRIED! Soft but firm, it had a great texture. Mushrooms, tomatoes, and herbs floated throughout. The broth was one of the best I've had. And the noodles were an awesome addition. SO GOOD. The whole entree was $9 and it was enough for two meals. In fact, I just ate the leftovers for lunch and it was still great. Highly recommend. I'll definitely be back on a sunday night! Also, it's BYOB! Met a friend for dinner. Split the chicken satay for an appetizer which was tender and perfectly grilled accompanied by delightful sauces. Thai iced tea was properly and not overly sweetened or watery. I then had red curry with shrimp and seafood with sticky rice that had a marvelous sauce and perfectly spiced (asked for 2/5). On a mid-week the place looked sharp albeit rather empty. Service was very attentive. All in all this was comparable to my go to Zagat rated Thai place back in NYC (or Long Island) sporting a 27/30 rating. Note that location is not notable in a rather non-descript strip mall hidden behind two other large establishments but well worth discovery. Easy parking. read more

True Thai gem!!! We've been to Thailand several times so we can say we know what authentic Thai food taste like. Thai Opal delivers excellent quality Thai food with great service. The restaurant is super clean and tastefully decorated. Nice ambiance. It probably gets busy at night but we went on weekends for lunches. We were worried the first time we went when it wasn't busy but the food was just AMAZING. We've had Tom Yum soup, Green and Penang Curries, Pad Thai, Fish Cakes, Pad Sew....all fantastic dishes. I honestly think the current location doesn't expose them to the best clientele, if they were elsewhere this would be a restaurant you line up for. read more

Came with my family. First thing we notice was that, at the time we were the only black people there and for some reason, our table was the only one to not get hand towels. At first I thought maybe it slipped them, so we ask if we would get towels ( never got it). To make matters worst, as I sat and observe, there was one black guy dining alone and he wasn't giving towels either. Not to mention, our plates were not taken up after we finish or did anyone checked on us. The food was Ok. I would never returned here, such horrible service. read more

Fantastic service and even better food to go with it! While the service isn't particularly quick, the staff is extremely friendly and the food is well worth the wait. They make sure that each dish comes out fresh and that you have time to finish each course, which is why service may seem slow. We shared the Spicy Seafood Soup for starters which was delicious. Then tried the Spicy Basil Noodle with beef and Mongolian Beef, which were both fantastic and I highly recommend (also came recommended from our server). Keep in mind, level four of five is serious too, so I recommend going with level three on your first visit! read more

Decent, but not worth 5 stars... I was circling the parking lot, looking for a certain taqueria, when I saw this place. Said taqueria was snowed under, so I doubled back for Thai. The place was clean and quiet, with the Eagles playing softly in the background (slightly odd, but I was cool with it). There was only one waitress, so she was a little slow, but still friendly. I ordered my standby, Spicy Basil Chicken, and hummed along to "Witchy Woman" while I waited. When the plate arrived, it looked great! But the first bite was kind of a let down. First off, the basil flavor was almost nonexistent. I could see bits of basil here and there, but I just couldn't really taste it. Second, the heat was totally missing. I ordered it with medium spice, but it wasn't there at all. However, the chicken was really good, the veggies were crispy, the sauce was good, and the rice was great. It was just missing the "spicy basil" of the equation. That being said, I'll give this place another shot just to be fair. I'd like to sample the rest of the menu. So, 3/5 for now - let's tap the brakes on all these 5 star reviews... read more
