I had the red curry with shrimp - I took spice level 5 ( and it was a bit much, but I enjoyed it - u know that ooooo it burns oooo it tastes so good). Amazing food. I came for the bubble tea and went back for the spring rolls. The food here in incredible. The chef also came to our table to make sure we loved everything, which we did. I had pad thai and tom yum soup here. Salad appetizer was complementary. The peanut sauce on the salad is good. The soup is good. Pad thai is just okay, too oily for me. Service was fine. Surprisingly there are quite a few Thai options around town, but this is our favorite. We just love it here! You cannot go wrong with anything...currys, pad Thai, drunken noodles, oh my! Let me preface this by admitting that I've been to three Thai restaurants in my life, Thai Rak Thai being one of them. I don't exactly hold myself up as an authority on the cuisine. That being said; I freaking LOVE Thai Rak Thai. The basics: service has always been super friendly, fast and quite accommodating. (Always warning people about spice levels of the food, for one thing) It's a clean, intimate little dining area. (Maybe a smidgen closed in, but that's what makes it intimate.) I love their food. Love it. I'm always trying new and awesome stuff here. The red curry. Great. Loooove the drunken noodles. Pad Thai, Panang curry, their house made spring rolls...I could go on and on. I have been an avid Thai Rak Thai diner since their commencement a few years ago and I have returned to order the same damn dish on almost every occasion!!! You may ask yourself, "What could possibly be that good and why not move on and try something different? Answer: two words- "DRUNKEN NOODLES" ( w/ chicken & medium spice)...Partly because I enjoy it so much, but mainly because most of the items on the menu are similar concoctions of this dish. This uniquely flavored meal is traditionally prepared with long flat rice noodles, cooked el diente, and stir fried with a delicious medley of red & green peppers, caramelized onions, fresh basil, chili oil, tomatoes, and seasoned to perfection with hints of garlic & ginger. The only downfall with Thai Rak Thai is BYOB. They've yet to obtain a liquor license, which may or may not be of your concern depending on how you get down ;-) ...The bonus is you can bring your favorite wine or drink to compliment these tasty dinners. My parents' suggestion, and I'm thinking with my elitist DC attitude, Thai in Scranton? We were pleasantly surprised. The place was packed on a Sunday night. The finacee said that this Thai was better than most of what we get in DC. While I wouldn't go quite that far I will say that I was very impressed. The Drunken Noodles and Kra Pow were my two personal favorites. The dumplings as appetizers were nothing spectacular but once we got into the entrees things really improved. It's BYOB which I actually kind of liked. It looked as if every table had their own ideas on this, some bringing 6 packs of beer and other bringing wine. We brought a bottle of white and immediately they put it on ice for us, a nice touch for a BYOB place. The decor is nothing much to look at, simple adornments, but the food is why we came and we were more than impressed. I'd come back again next time I'm up in the Electric City! read more

My mom and I were driving from New York City to Rochester when we came across this total gem. The food was delicious and, being from California, I have tasted great Thai food! I couldn't believe this place was in Scranton - we will definitely stop anytime we are driving through town! The drunken noodles are a must have along with their Thai red curry. Once again I was pleasantly surprised by Scranton's offerings. Nice atmosphere (tablecloths, cloth napkins, and a flower vase on every table, albeit with artificial flowers, but still...) and quite the place to be on Thursday night. Fortunately we didn't have to wait, but almost all of the tables were filled. The spring rolls were tasty, not too heavy, and vegetarian. Cute presentation, too: 6 skinny rolls cut in half diagonally, arranged in a row and accompanied by sliced carrots and cabbage, with a light sauce. The Drunken Noodles dish with chicken was delicious: flat noodles, broccoli, peppers, onions, and white meat chicken in a really flavorful sauce. This dish had the "spicy" designation and I was told that medium is hot, whereas hot is "hot-hot." The medium didn't quite taste hot to me but I still really enjoyed it, both at the restaurant and as a midnight snack later on. My dining companion didn't want anything spicy whatsoever and can't eat nuts or corn. The waitress was very helpful about recommending something within these restrictions. The resulting dish consisted of chicken and veggies in a light ginger sauce that didn't look too exciting but was pretty flavorful nonetheless. Good Thai food is hard to find. Found this place on yelp during my travels. I could smell the spices and flavors as I walked up to the restaurant. Very good selection of thai dishes. No Singha beer, but byob. They had thai duck specials today, but I passed for some fiery green curry. I did ask for my dish 'thai' spicy - and they balked - but the server was very helpful, bringing over a tray of various hot peppers so I could spice it up. A few moments later I was sweating, sniffling and tears welling up in my eyes from the fire. One bonus about this restaurant is that they offer brown rice instead of white rice, albeit at a $2.50 charge. I finished up w/ the mango and sticky rice. The mango was decent and the coconut sticky rice was a good finish for the burning madness prior. I did notice a couple of other tables going heavy on the vegetarian fare as well. We love this place! The first time I ever went, I asked the waitress what I should order, and she recommended their drunken noodles-SO GOOD! If you don't love "heat," you can get a mild version-but I suggest you try them! The owners are incredibly sweet, the staff is always cleaning and smiling, it's our go to place for Thai food. We are Scrantonians, and it's a place we visit at least twice a month. Passing through Scanton to get back to NYC stopped here via Yelp. Wow this place beats 90% of Thai places in NYC. My drunken noodles were perfect. I asked for super spicy and the waitress asked if I was sure. I usually douse any Thai meal with Siricha. I did not need a touch of hot sauce as my dish was perfectly spicy (made me sweat and at times want to cry). Overpriced Americanized Thai food. When I ordered the small portioned spicy papaya salad for $7.95, I was thoroughly disappointed. The salad was not spicy at all. It's unfortunate they advertise themselves as authentic when the food is obviously catered to the Scranton population-- white. When I ordered a small lemongrass-based soup for $5.95, I had to order rice on the side for an extra $2. Thai people don't have soup without rice, this is ridiculous. As for dessert, the mango with sticky rice is not worth the hefty $5.95 price tag. For that price I expected the mango to be ripe and sweet-- it was not. In addition the sticky rice seems like it was refrigerated then microwaved-- I could feel hot and cold spots. I was looking to be a regular at an authentic, fairly priced Asian restaurant. Their food is delicious and service is SO quick and always friendly! It's a local gem and I recommend it to everyone who visits the area. They accommodate large groups. BYOB. They have a little disco ball set up for birthdays and they make a good show of it when it's someone's birthday at the restaurant too. Their drunken noodles are just spicy enough and this is my go-to most of the time! Tomyum soup is a little too sweet for me, but it is creamy and tart, would recommend. Their red curry is pretty standard, I was actually not impressed given how good their other dishes are that I've tried so far. I haven't tried their other curries yet, so I would recommend trying your luck with the others. You can also ask for their red chili sauce if you feel that you could use more spice in your dish. They have bubble tea and thai iced tea along with other standard drinks. The only negative is that they're closed on Sundays unfortunately :( read more

Definitely a solid 4 stars for Scranton. We actually meant to try Thai Thai Scranton, which is a block away, but they were unfortunately closed for lunch on Valentine's. Thai Rak Thai was tasty and affordable, and close to a couple of other downtown spots to visit after a meal (vinyl store, vapor bar, etc). We started with the calamari, and I had a papaya salad for my entree. My boyfriend had the red curry and was pleased with the generous amount of rice he received with it. He only mentioned the curry might be a bit thin, but it was still good. I had a Thai tea as a dessert, which was standard. Overall, good and authentic choice if you're in the area. read more
