I travel a lot for work and have eaten a lot of Thai, even at the renowned Jitlada in LA. However Thai Smile is still one of the best Thai restaurants I have been to. Not only is the service and food awesome but they will prepare your food any way you want. For example, I'm a chili head and love spicy food, and they will make my dish 200* and no they don't throw extra crushed red peppers. They actually put some sauce and habanero peppers etc. Hoping one day they will use ghost peppers. Regardless they have the best rice and pad thai I have ever. I went in thinking that it would be a sit down but at the counter the manager told us that it was take out only but we cold have a seat and eat there if we would like. I was cool with that. So let's just get the expectation of servers and tips out if the way and get right to the essentials. The food was great. We got the pineapple coconut curry and the pad Thai. Both were very delicious. The pad Thai was not overly sweet and was also full of flavor. We got 2 star spice so it was for us just the right amount of spice. The curry was also very tasty. A hidden gem. Located in an older looking strip mall the restaurant isn't much to look at but don't let that fool you. The pad Thai chicken is excellent. Seems they also do a lot of take out orders and chicken fried rice seems to be very popular. I was first introduced to Thai Smile in 2008 and am still a faithful customer that tries to make it in once a month or more. Everything my husband and I have tried has been delicious, service is always fast and friendly, and it is reasonably priced. EDIT 8/11/16: While the food is still great, the prices no longer are. What used to be an affordable dinner and a cute little local place, has become expensive. To get a to-go order for a Saturday night dinner for 2 people was nearly $40, which is not what I would consider particularly well priced. Thai Smile is absolutely the best restaurant in Richmond. The service is fast, kind, and funny. The owner is always, always at the restaurant and he many times has taken our orders himself. He is always talking to customers and helping everyone he can. You can get a large range of traditional, authentic Thai food. I always get Chicken with Vegetables and my roommate gets the Chicken Fried Rice. You can get it in a range of 1 star to 5 stars in spice, but if you ask he will make your food as spicy as you would like. The prices are very reasonable as the food is almost more than you can eat. I rated Thai Smiles four stars because they do not offer brown rice and their hot tea is with a tea bag, not a pot of brewed loose tea. THEY NO LONGER USE TAKE OUT CONTAINERS WHEN DINING IN! Always has been great. No waiter service but that isn't even necessary. My food has always been so good with very generous portions. My only wish is that sometimes the pitchers of water is served at room temperature and the cups are small. This isn't even worth deducting a star. Love Thai Smile. Hands down one of the best restaurants in Richmond. Always tastes fresh and the portion sizes are huge. I can't go a week without it.

The sate sauce was horrible and did not taste like peanuts at all. Chicken was dry. The main meal had very little meat over lots of lettuce. Everything was overspiced and not in a good way. Meal was way overpriced for what you get. I will never eat there again. Casa Fiesta has much better food for less but it is Mexican. read more

Stopped at Thai Smile for lunch and was surprised to find an authentic Thai restaurant with a great selection. The food is cooked to order. You can order an entree 1 star with no spice up to very, very spicy. Tofu is always an option. The Panang Curry Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice are very good. Try the steamed dumplings as a starter. One of our favorite paces to visit when we are in Richmond (we only live about 20 minutes away). The family atmosphere is so great and the food is absolutely amazing, we go there often enough to know all of the employees and we are always greeted with a smile. My advice is to get there when they open for lunch as soon as you can they are often very busy though they are never slow with food it always arrives quickly and steaming hot. I had heard good things about Thai Smile but wow was I disappointed. I had chicken red curry, wife had chicken pad thai. My curry smelled of feet (and I don't throw that around lightly) and tasted watered down. Pad thai was just rice noodles with peanuts. And the chicken in both dishes was rubbery, stringy, and flavorless. Each entree was $11, far far beyond the value received, especially considering there was no service and the food was served in plastic to-go containers. If you've never had thai food in your life you may think Thai Smile is interesting, but in reality the quality is very low and the price very high. read more

The food outshines the lackluster decor. You go to the counter to order your food and they will bring it to you. The people here are wonderful and patient when you are trying to figure out what to order. They do close for one month in the summer as it's a college town so that makes sense. Phenomenal Thai food. They do the staples really, really well here. I had the soupy noodle soup, which has a flavorful broth, chicken and rice noodles. It was delicious. I also got the chicken pad thai, which was one of the best I've had in Central Kentucky. I will note that I got it hot, and it wasn't, so if you're a spice fan you may want to up the heat a bit.
