Such a great restaurant! I typically go for lunch during the week, and it's always a great time. They're quick to seat you, and food is always speedy and very fresh. Went today for lunch and got the Pad Woonsen. It was my first time trying this dish, but it was great! Went for a spice level 5, which they list as "very spicy". For me, it was perfect. I could still enjoy the taste of everything, but my sinuses were definitely cleared at the end of the meal. My favorite thing there are the fried spring rolls, however. So. Good. Order extra, because you'll want them. Also, they have a limited lunch menu. I feel like there's a good selection for lunch, but I could see how some find it limited. The price for lunch is great though - mine was under $9 and came with iced tea, soup, the entree, and a spring roll. Great deal! read more

After one dine in meal, one takeout, and one appetizer alone, I give Thai Taste 4 stars. With prime real estate in Carbondale, Thai Taste gets a lot of attention, and mostly well-deserved. A convenient municipal lot across the street provides ample parking, and hours are split in the day. I'm sure this helps the restaurant regroup and prepare for dinner service. Timeliness has never been an issue for me here. Food comes out hot and quick, and service is always friendly. An odd circumstance left me killing time in Thai Taste by ordering an appetizer (Chicken Satay) my first time through the doors. This left me with a bad impression. Chicken was overcooked, lukewarm, and not incredibly flavorful. Peanut sauce redeeming, but not quite enough. My second and third experiences were much better. Flavors are almost there, stunted for the Midwestern palate~ as to be expected with all Southeast Asian kitchens here. Spice levels reflect the same. A 10++ on a 1-10 scale results in a spicy dish that was still easily finished. The impressive side is that other flavors still come through. This business is operated by people who know what they're doing, and is catered to the demographic. Food could use some vibrancy, produce could be a bit fresher, but overall this is a fine establishment. read more

This is the first time I ate here and I'm not impressed! It seems that they feel that Thai cuisine is created from telling them how hot you want it on a scale of 1 to 10. This was one of my favorite places to eat in Carbondale! They're always packed so you know the food is fabulous. You can specify how spicy you want your dish on a scale of 1 to 10. I absolutely love their spring roll appetizer. That sauce the dish comes doused in is exploding with flavor. And my go to's every time were tofu sweet and sour dishes. So very delicious. This is one of the best places in Carbondale. No matter when I have been here, there has never been a wait for a table and while the restaurant is relatively small, the tables aren't crammed together forcing you to eat so close to random people. The food is really good, and they even give you an option to make the food spicyer or milder depending on your personal preference, however if you actually like spicy food you might not want to go lower then an 8, because it seems everything is catered to the wimpiest of patrons. I actually feel bad for this place, because opening up a specialty restaurant in a town that is populated with kids who only like to get drunk and eat fast food is tough business. The restaurant is a hidden gem as it seems people haven't quite discovered it yet. The only down side is parking can be a problem on some nights. read more

Might be biased, but this is the best Thai place I've been to for rice dishes. Spent the last several years between LA/OC/Phoenix, and some time in Southeast Asia. I've tried 50+ Thai restaurants in that time & I'm legitimately sad that none compare. This is what I miss most about home. As a visitor at carbondale, and a big pad Thai lover. I have been told to eat at this restaurant. But I have to say that this was one of my worst experiences ever. First the lady at the front asked me "how I can help you". Instead "hello, how many people today?" And told me where to sit without walking me or even ask me if I'm ok here or it. I felt not welcome. Then the waiter was even worse !!!!! I told him I was chicken Pad Thai and the waiter speck so fast I couldn't understand him at all. So I asked him to say it again and he open his eyes on like he want to bit me. He bring me water and just "throw" the cup on the table. I thought to my self maybe he have a bad day like all of us so I hoped maybe the food is good. And the pad THai it's not Pad Thai !!!! I can make better food at home. This is the worst place I seen in my life. (And I have been al over the world so I do know one or two thinking) I think they don't like me because.........!!! Thai Taste is okay. If you want Thai food in Carbondale there is no other choice. I don't say this as a testament to their food. No, there really is no other choice. The food is good, usually. Very inconsistent. You never know what the spice is going to be. A 3 one day may be like a 5 another and a 8 one day may be like a 3 the next. I recently ate at Thai Taste when I first arrived in the Carbondale, Illinois area (I am working out of town from Louisiana). As recommended, I ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice dish. It was delicious! I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it actually was. I was very impressed with the portion size, as well. Very generous. The only negative thing was the fact that I was approached by a homeless man asking for food/money, so I handed him my to-go-box full of food that I was planning on eating the next day. Okay, so I guess that's not really a bad mark towards the restaurant, itself, rather than the fact that I just really enjoyed the food and I was looking forward to the leftovers the following day! read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area to order food from. The food gets five stars but the uneven service gets 1 star only. The food is excellent and can be made to your specification of spicy from 1-10. I usually hover around the 3-5 mark. My husband, who loves spicy food, can eat a 6, but it definitely clears your sinuses and makes your eyes water! Overall, this is an excellent place to order food for carry out. read more

Nice small place with the owner usually doing the cooking. I have been coming here since it opened. The spice level is not consistent across dishes as each one has a different blend. I love their fresh rolls and although I am not a vegetarian really enjoy their tofu. I almost always go for lunch as you get soup and egg roll with entree for cheaper but be prepared to wait and be rushed out at lunch due to the crowds. There are more choices for supper. When going with a Group ( today 10 of us) make sure you do reservations and go right at 5 (when they open for supper) as it fills up quickly. First we were told we could not get fried rice as a lunch item, the spring rolls were obviously out fo a box and the Pangeeng Beef was just this side of dog food. When asked how hot on a scale of 1 to 10, I joked 6 1/2. The waitress promptly scolded me saying "just pick six or seven". Would I have known anyway? Avoid this place at all costs. read more

This is not a real Thai place. I'm from Chicago which is full of neighborhood Thai places, all of which are better than this. The flavor is not authentic. I got a very normal dish: pad Thai and my boyfriend got Pad see ew. Neither were good. We got them a level 5 spicy. I appreciate heat but it didn't work well in either dish. My boyfriend's dish literally tasted like gritty charcoal. We also had an eggroll appetizer which was good but overpriced for a small amount of food. I don't know if the good reviews are a result of not having true authentic Thai food, but this isn't a good place and I wouldn't recommend it. There isn't a single person who works there that is actually Thai or even Asian. It was a disappointment and really not that cheap. read more

I love Thai Taste! I love the layout of the restaurant, the food is tasty and the Thai tea is delicious. I'm eating an order of pad woon sen (my usual at TT) from a neighborhood Thai restaurant in Chicago and don't enjoy it nearly as much as the pad woon sen from Thai Taste. Having heard about how good the food was at Thai Taste, my hopes were high for a great experience. While the food was better than average the service was beyond subpar. I came in on a Saturday night (4/6/13) knowing that it would probably be busy. That being said, the hostess was rude and uncooperative. When I told her that I was interested in takeout she seemed put off that I didn't already know what I was interested in ordering. When I politely explained to her that it was my first time at Thai Taste she flung the menu at me and was standoffish. As mentioned, I knew that it would be a wait because it was a Saturday night but I saw my order sitting ready for at least 10 minutes at the bar. As someone who has been a server before I know how difficult a busy restaurant can be but that being said I really, REALLY regret even leaving a tip (as said, former server so I always give at least 20% even on takeout). I understand that this is one of the nicer restaurant options in Carbondale but there really was no need to treat a customer like that. read more
