I was so intrigued by what I heard about Thali, a place where there is no menu and you pay a flat amount for your meal. We walked in and we greeted and seated. We then ordered and consumed the best chai tea I have ever had, and I don't like chai tea. After about 15- 20 minutes some fresh hot food came out. The waitress explained a little bit about each bowl and we began to enjoy. The flavors were incredible. They were serving food more traditionally from South India when I have heard they normally serve food from North, but it was all so tasty and exciting trying some new items I have never had before. We were checked on a few times and asked if there was anything we would like more of and were encouraged to take out time and enjoy. So we did. After we had our fill we set out to pay the bill. We even saw multiple people we knew there but it did not feel to crowded. I would highly recommend this place not just for the food, but also the experience. Hopefully they continue to serve quality food and just add more to their atmosphere and maybe some more information about the food for the culturally challenged like myself. I'd love to learn more! This place is brand new and extremely good! They serve a single meal which changes weekly, so no need to plow through a menu. This also means that service is fast. I have been to the other vegetarian restaurants in town and this is by a wide margin the best. So, if you have a vegan or vegetarian friend or loved one, you will both be happy you came here. Killer authentic vegetarian Indian food. It's a fixed menu but pretty much AYCE. Tucked away on a quiet street behind this huge apartment complex (it looks like it may be senior housing) next to Icecycle Creamery. The fixed menu comes with like 5 little bowls with different entrees, plus rice and naan. It is however, a little pricey for what you get, even if its AYCE, because an average person can only eat about 2 servings of each little bowl, and the entrees are probably not the most expensive things to make. However, you're paying for the hipster ambiance and skill that goes into making the genuine Indian cuisine. read more

My girlfriend and I we're in town for Street Vibrations. Having just recently changed over to strictly Vegan, we were looking for somewhere on Reno for a nice dinner. Well we definitely found the place. It was some of the best tasting Indian food I've had. The idea of small individual servings and being served seconds only on the items you would like is brilliant. By far the most authentic Indian restaurant I have been to. Restaurant owner's mom cooks perfect, well, "mom's food". The foot has very little oil, soda and spices ... unlike most Indian restaurants. For my American friends, this is traditional Indian home-made food -- yes, this staple for those who grow up in the west, mid and north India. Thali is open only from Fri - Mon. Hopefully with better response and mom training more people, this place will thrive. They serve not only Indian food but also vegan and gluten-free options. Thali is by far my favorite restaurant in town. I have eaten here at least 10 times and have never been disappointed. The staff is always friendly, the decor is cozy, and the food is always amazing. I love that they serve exclusively vegetarian/vegan dishes prepared with organic/local produce. One of the best parts about Thali is that each visit is a surprise because they only have one dish (that can be vegan, or vegetarian, or gluten free) on the menu that changes every night. only 4 stars because for two people, our check ended up being $41 then you tip them on top of that. other than the price, my boyfriend and i both LOVED the food and the vibes here. they give two rotis, rice, raita, 3 different mini dishes, and a mini indian dessert. it is all you can eat, so if you wanted more of anything, they would give you more of you ask, which was pretty cool. the food is either all vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free, your choice! they have very good quality of food that tastes great! read more

We were driving from Truckee and we were going to reach just on the closing time, but we had called and asked if they could accommodate a party of 12. They were very warm and asked us to come, though we reached a minute or two past the closing time, they served us with a Thali that tasted very much home made. Thali is my all-time favorite restaurant. The very first time I went to Thali, I visited with my parents for my dad's birthday. I was a little nervous bringing them because my dad is a very health conscious eater. Turns out, this was the best place to bring them. The literal translation of "thali" is a shared plate, sourced locally. Serj, the co-owner, makes a special effort to support local farmers only. The menu changes every day depending on what produce is seasonally available. You feel good after eating here! Plus, it's a really fun way to mix it up and experience a different culture.
