I can't believe I've never left a review for my favorite restaurant since moving to Reno 5 years ago! This place is unforgettable. There are always new things to try because they serve local and seasonal produce. They scaled their business beautifully and serve lunch and tea in addition to dinner. This restaurant is located in downtown and is within walking distance of many local attractions. They validate parking in the parking garage on 1st & Sierra. They also have cooking classes! Never before have I had an unlimited meal feel so limited. The single portion thali is $18. For only $2 more you get "unlimited" servings. Sounds great in theory. Those unlimited servings feel very limited when the waiters don't come back to your table to bring you more. If it's a staffing issue, I would just prefer to go get my own. Since that's not an option they need to have a better system in place to bring seconds, thirds, fourths, or whatever number of unlimited portions you request. Food was excellent. Some of the best daal and sabzi I've had from anywhere. It's awesome that they don't just remove items when you request Vegan but actually substitute, a Vegan yogurt for example. If you're only getting a single thali for $18 it's ridiculously expensive, however. The first portion they brought out was like a taster size. If you're only getting that for $18, you're getting robbed. If you purchased the "unlimited" serving, be prepared to wait. If your patience isn't unlimited, you'll be lucky to get another serving. I am so impressed! We came in on a Saturday night and it looked pretty popular. We got the vegan thalis and let me tell you... just WOW. As a Gujarati and an Indian American, I love thalis and will try them anywhere and everywhere from India to all over the United States, and never have I encountered a location that was so inclusive to vegans. Normally, other places will just remove anything that isn't vegan and give you the rest of the items for a vegan "option" but this restaurant went above and beyond. When we got our plates, I was surprised and skeptical to see yogurt in it in addition to the rotis looking like they had ghee on it. I was thinking, they must have messed up or they don't know what vegan is. I tried a spoonful of the yogurt first and turns out it's Forager - a super familiar taste of nondairy yogurt! I was beaming! They also actually had a vegan dessert - a mango kheer! I've never been to a restaurant that includes options like these for vegans. Beyond their inclusivity, the food was delicious. Everything was super flavorful from the sabzis to the daal. For instance, the carrots in one of the sabzis were delicious when they touched my tongue. I don't think I've ever enjoyed carrots as much as I did in this sabzi before. I also personally am not super into Indian pickles but surprisingly I could do these! Truly a diamond in the rough! Thali is located in downtown Reno and is one of the best Indian spots I've had in a very long time. Mostly because they did all the work in helping me decide what I wanted to eat. I absolutely love this concept of paying for a set meal and being able to enjoy all the different dishes made by the chefs. For less than $20, you are able to have a meal that's "unlimited" consisting of various Indian dal, curries, yogurt, etc. served with roti flat bread. You can ask for more and enjoy it as much as you'd like, and end the meal with some dessert. For me, I wasn't comfortable dining in due to the small enclosed space, so we did end up ordering two portions to go. I absolutely loved the veggies and curries that we had, but was left feeling hungry since I would've totally asked for more if I were dining inside. It's a fun location becuase it's in the heart of downtown without feeling like it... we all know reno gets a little ratchet sometimes and this cute street does not. It was nice to visit Thali again! I haven't been since the beginning of the pandemic but it is still just as delicious as I remembered. This evening, they served a bean dish, a cauliflower dish, and a spicy pepper and mushroom dish. They also include basmati rice, roti, sweet cardamom rice, and a bit of pickled veggies with each plate. When we ordered, we were told that someone would collect our payment once they brought us refills. I was a little disappointed with the service tonight. They were pretty busy which I can understand but it took 45 minutes to get our food which came out lukewarm and the portions were much smaller than they used to be. After eating what they gave us, we waited for refills for a long time but none came. I had to go up to the counter to ask for refills. It took another 30 minutes for someone to come out. We were told that they were running out of food so they didn't have much to give us. We also had to go up to the counter again to pay for our meal which was a little inconvenient. They increased their prices to $18 per plate which came out to about $25/head with tax and tip which felt like a lot to not receive adequate portions. Though the food was yummy, it felt pretty expensive for the amount of food and the quality of service that we received. read more

A very unique dining experience in downtown Reno! I like Indian food, but I don't go out for this type of cuisine often. Part of the reason is because I'm overwhelmed by the menu options and never know what to get. That made this the perfect place to go! They don't really have a menu, the main entrees change daily based on what fresh ingredients are available. You get 3 entrees, yogurt, rice, bread, and dessert! $18 for no refills or $20 for all you can eat--seems like an easy decision to me. This is such a great way to try a variety of different foods and flavors! I'm glad I read some prior reviews on the process of ordering here or I would've been a bit confused. There's only a couple tables when you first walk in, but then it opens up into a shared indoor common space with seating for multiple businesses. You order at the Thali counter then they bring the food out to you. Someone brings by refills for the dishes you'd like more of. When you are done, you bus your own table and then pay at the other counter! It still took about 30 mins to get our food which isn't long for dinner but felt kind of long for an order-at-the-counter place. I couldn't even tell you what entrees we had tonight, I couldn't find it listed on their online menu or on their Instagram where they're supposed to be found. Either way, everything was really good! All the food is vegetarian, a friend with us was stoked about that since it can be hard to find places like that. I definitely got much fuller than I thought I would from this food! I only had about half of my plate refilled after finishing round 1 and that was plenty for me. I had never been in this space before and will definitely come back to hang out on the patio as it warms up. Parking can be tough here as there is limited street parking, but it's an easy walk from a few blocks over. I wish I had snapped a picture of food because it was beautiful and delicious. It was a special they made just for Christmas, I believe a kafta. My buddy is a vegan and they were able to accommodate, he said his meal was just as good. The naan was some of the best I've ever tried; warm and soft with gentle flavors. I tried lassa for the first time and was blown away how good it was, rich and creamy and floral, incredibly tasty. They also have the world's best pilsner, Pfiem, on draft. I'll obviously order that next time I come in. We came on Christmas Day and the staff was charming, warm, charismatic and had the true spirit of Santa's elves. Wow to say the least, im new to the vegetarian/vegan life. So expect "no menu" which caught me by surprise but was very enjoyable. Thali was a very good restaurant. The food was delicious. The concept was very interesting. You sit down and everybody has the same thing which is a thali. A thali is a big round metal plate with smaller round plates in it each one having a different type of Indian food. It's also served with bread and rice and since it's Indian food the bread was non-. The non-Woods Hole wheat it didn't really taste like the non-I'm used to but it was good anyway. The parking wasn't so good in fact we had to park about four blocks away on the other side of Cherokee Riverwalk so it's a really long walk to and from the car. This restaurant is a pop-up restaurant. Which means it pops up on different nights I think the sign said Thursday through Sunday but I saw that other reviewer's said that it was Tuesday through Sunday so I recommend that you call and find out whether they're going to be open or not. read more

Yelp save the day again! Searched under organic and Thali popped up. We love Indian and we love organic so this seems like a no brainer for us. I LOVE LOVE their concept! Def. healthy (home cooking and organic) eco friendly, everything in stainless still, composable napkin, efficient (stream line). I especially love the no menu concept and how they serve all you can eat style.... small dishes with refills available that also means no waste in food. Flavor is solid authentic home cooking jammed with spices. Not too overpowering but on point. It's not the typical Indian restaurant that serves the same usual. Tonight we got the black lentil (beluga), squash curry and a potato dish with a different kind of squash. All amazing. We actually asked for one vegetarian and one vegan and the only difference is the yogurt. Roti is another highlight. Freshly made. Thick and with nice chewing texture. It's also whole-wheat. 2.2.19 Tonight my room mates and I decided to eat at West Street Market, which, if you didn't know, has a couple of local restaurant businesses that share the same dining area. And Thali happens to be one of those restaurants. Now, don't mistake Thali for Maya's South Indian Cuisine. They are both different and separate businesses. However, they do share the same restaurant space; Maya's operates during the day and Thali operates during the evening. When talking to one of the staff members working tonight, she mentioned that, as the name applies, Maya's South Indian Cuisine focuses on cuisine from the southern region of India and Thali focuses on the more northern region. They are similar in the sense that both use organically cultivated vegetables. How cool is that? When we were ready to order that same staff member gladly explained how they operated. Unlike Maya's having a menu with certain appetizers and dishes on it, Thali has no set menu. In fact, Thali serves seasonal dishes that change every night! A plate is served with three ever changing entrees, yogurt (Rita), bread (Roti), rice (Chol), pickles (Achar), and a sweet dessert. And it's all you can eat! Throughout your meal a staff member will come around with four pots containing rice and the three seasonal entrees, and ask if you'd like more of any entree. Tonight's entrees were Squash Sabji, Eggplant and Potato Sabji, and lastly, Black-Dhal (lentils). The silver platter was presented beautifully and the staff member explained to us what each item was. Underneath the roti there was a nice portion of rice. The flavors of each entree along with the many sides were absolutely delicious. Both of the Sabjis were mildly spicy, which was the Perfect amount of spice for me. I'm no champ with spicy foods, but I very much enjoyed what Thali served tonight. I graciously accepted seconds and thirds, but no more than that. Thali is more than just an Indian restaurant; it's a different and refreshingly unique dining experience. Every one of the staff members were very friendly and helpful throughout the night. Even one of the chefs gave a smile and a wave to me as I paid for my dinner. Their food was simply delectable and I enjoyed every bite. All of this mixed with the other local restaurant businesses of West Street Market makes for a very wholesome experience. If you would like a more private and quiet dining setting, then Thali also has their separate dining area for their guests. Overall, whether you're vegan, vegetarian or anyone who loves to eat, Thali will give you a dining experience you'll never forget. read more

This place has the best Indian food I have ever had. Every time you come in they have something different on the menu so it's always a fun surprise. Everyone that works here is kind and helpful. They really look out for you if you're vegan. The whole menu is vegetarian but can easily be made vegan. Just make sure to ask them and they will get you vegan roti and a coconut yoghurt as alternatives. The pickled veggies and mint chutney I could eat every day and I'd be happy. Seriously every detail is there. After your dinner try their chai tea. It's mind blowingly delicious. West Second street market is also a really cool building that's located right by the river. Restaurant Thali in Reno is a gem for anyone craving authentic Indian cuisine. This place stands out with its homemade quality of food and exceptional service, unlike many other Indian restaurants. Even the renowned hubs of Indian cuisine like the Bay Area and Edison cannot match the authenticity and quality of Thali. Greens in San Francisco might come close, but it's not authentic North Indian food. In most North Indian restaurants, dishes are overloaded with cream under the guise of butter this and butter that - butter chicken, butter paneer, malai kofta, navrattan korma. My throat often ends up hurting from all that cream. But at Thali, the food is organic, vegan, and seasonal. On Sunday, May 26, 2024, we enjoyed lentil/rajma, butternut squash/pumpkin dish, and aloo matar mushroom. The meal included jeera pulav, roti, raita (yogurt dish with grated veggies and Indian spices), mysore pak (sweet dish), and the chai we ordered separately - everything was out of this world. I recommend this place to every Indian yearning for authentic homemade food. 4.5 stars! There is NO menu to choose from at Thali, a restaurant offering organic, vegetarian Indian eats in a small shop connected to the West Street Market food hall! Each thali plate came with lightly spiced basmati rice, yogurt (raita), pickled veggies, chutney, freshly rolled and grilled roti (whole wheat flatbread), and dessert along with three different entrees, which change every day! On my visit, the entrees were a lentil soup, aloo gobi (spiced cauliflower and potatoes), and a thin gravy with paneer and peas. Everything served on the plate was delicious and balanced, though the flavors/spices of the food were toned down and on the mild side. If I had to pick some favorite components, I'd choose the lentil soup, the yogurt sauce, and definitely the freshly grilled roti flatbread! There were unlimited refills on the thali, and the friendly, enthusiastic servers brought around metal containers to top up everyone's metal plates and bowls! Now that was a truly Indian experience! You get what they are serving that day and I love that. To be completely honest, I have no idea what the dishes I got were. All of them were new to me but they were all delicious! And, they were all very filling too. From the look of the dishes you might think, "oh hey, I can do all you eat. I'll definitely need a refill for sure." If you are one of those who can chow down dinner, then all you can eat is totally for you. As for my friend and I, we were stuffed with just the food we got. Your plate also comes with a drink.
